Some Notes on Travel and Escape
Considerando de modos distintos e contraditórios de definir viagem
e “fuga/escape”, Manuela Ribeiro Sanches concentrar-se-á em
concepções modernas da ideia de movimento para salientar as
suas relações com a afirmação do colonialismo e as respectivas
consequências sobre diferentes formas de (i)mobilidade, com
ênfase especial no contexto português. A viagem no seu formato
moderno também levanta questões acerca das relações entre o
estado-nação moderno e o colonialismo e o modo como as mes­
mas estão a ser postas à prova por outras rotas e histórias que
questionam concepções limitadas da modernidade característica
destes tempos pós(neo)coloniais.
Manuela Ribeiro Sanches é professora auxiliar com agregação
da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, onde lecciona
diversas disciplinas no âmbito dos estudos culturais e estudos
pós-coloniais. Exerceu também actividade docente no Departament
of Comparative Literature, Indiana University, Bloomington, e no
Institut für Europäische Ethnologie, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Foi ainda investigadora-residente neste instituto berlinense e no
Center for Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz.
Actualmente é investigadora no Centro de Estudos Comparatistas
da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, onde coordena
o projecto “Dislocating Europe. Post-Colonial Perspectives in Liter­
ary, Anthropological and Historical Studies”.

Some Notes on Travel and Escape
Considering the diverse and contradictory ways of defining travel
and escape, Manuela Ribeiro Sanches will concentrate on modern
understandings of movement to emphasize their relation to the
affirmation of colonialism and their consequences for contradictory
forms of (im)mobility, with a special emphasis on the Portuguese
context. Travel in its modern forms also raises questions about the
relations between the modern nation-state and colonialism, and
the ways in which these understandings are being challenged by
other paths and histories that unsettle narrow understandings of
modernity in post(neo)colonial times.
Manuela Ribeiro Sanches is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of
Letters, University of Lisbon, where she teaches a wide range of
subjects in the area of cultural and post-colonial studies. She has
also taught at the Department of Comparative Literature, Indiana
University, Bloomington, and at the Institut für Europäische Ethno­
logie, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She has been a resident
scholar at the Center for Cultural Studies, University of California,
Santa Cruz, and at the Institut für Europäische Ethnologie, Hum­
boldt Universität zu Berlin. She is a researcher at the Centre for
Comparative Studies at the University of Lisbon, where she coordi­
nates the project “Dislocating Europe. Post-Colonial Perspectives
in Literary, Anthropological and Historical Studies”.
