O INGLÊS NA ESCÓCIA
 Inglês utilizado amplamente no país;
 Pronúncia muito diferente do Standard British English, marcada
pela roticidade (variação rótica);
 Forte influência de variações arcaicas do inglês (Old English), que
por sua vez sofreu influência de línguas nórdicas;
 Os “sotaques” se tornam mais acentuados nas regiões rurais,
conhecidas como Highlands;
 Palavras de origem gaélica são utilizadas com muita frequência,
tornando as variações faladas na Escócia ainda mais singulares.
PECULIARIDADES FONÉTICAS
• Intensa Roticidade (o som da letra “r” é mais enfático do que em outras variações
róticas).
Exemplo:
Jim Kerr, from ‘Simple Minds’
‘I’d like to think, without sounding arrogant, that, before Simple Minds in Glasgow,
there certainly wasn’t music scene. There was a (sic) couple of artists of note,
and…great artists – Alex Harvey, Frankie Miller, Average White Band – I’m talking
about late ‘60s, early ‘70s – kind of hard-drinking, bluesy, whisky, working men’s
industrial music. And, not only wasn’t there a scene in Glasgow…it had to be London
or New York, this was before…’

• Uso de vocabulário incomum em outras variações da língua inglesa.

outras variações.
