Ervas e curandeiras, remédios e boticários: formas de curar nas Ilhas de Cabo Verde
(séculos XVIII e inícios do século XX)
Estrategicamente localizadas na região do Trópico de Câncer, as ilhas de Cabo Verde
encontradas desertas, e não dispondo de riquezas naturais de importância significativa, que
atraíssem facilmente povoadores, foram colonizadas pela criação de condições que
permitissem a sua ocupação efectiva. A Coroa concedeu como prerrogativa, a todos quantos
fossem vizinhos da ilha de Santiago, a possibilidade de comerciarem livremente em toda a
região da costa da Guiné. Assim, europeus e africanos foram os grupos que constituíram o
substrato humano destas ilhas. Homens que transportaram com eles saberes e formas de
curar doenças e de tentar evitar mortes prematuras Foram trabalhos de anos, décadas e
séculos esforçando-se por conhecer a utilização de plantas medicinais, umas endémicas
outras introduzidas. Foram tentativas para conseguir fixar nas ilhas boticários, físicos e
cirurgiões e manter, pelo menos, Santiago aprovisionada de remédios vindos do Reino.
É esta dualidade ervas/remédios, curandeiras/boticários e inclusivamente as “intromissões
“ de uns nos campos e nas acções dos outros que se pretende explorar nesta comunicação.
Herbs and healers, medicine and chemists: ways of healing in the Cape Verde Islands
(18th century and beginning of 19th century)
Strategically located in the region of the Tropic of Cancer, the Cape Verde Islands
deserted and featuring no natural richness of significant importance that would easily
attract settlers, were colonised by the creation of conditions that would allow their
effective occupation. The Crown granted all settlers of the Island of Santiago the
possibility of carrying out free trade along the coast of Guinea. Therefore, the Europeans
and Africans constituted the human base of these islands and brought with them
knowledge and ways of healing diseases and preventing premature deaths. This process of
getting to know the use of medicinal herbs, some endemic and others introduced, took
years, decades and centuries. And there were attempts to attract chemists, physicians
and surgeons to the islands and maintain at least, Santiago with medicine supplies from the
Kingdom.
It is the herbs/medicine, healers/chemists dichotomy and the interference of some in the
fields and actions of others that we aim at discussing in this communication.
