At 32, Rob Young says, “My idea of charity was to throw change into those boxes by cash registers. I
02 only visited an Indian reservation so I could buy fireworks.” Then he read about elderly Native Americans
03 freezing to death in their homes.

Through the Adopt a Grandparent program, Young adopted Katherine Red Feather, a 77-year-old
05 Dakota Sioux from South Dakota´s Pine Ridge Reservation. She lived in a one-room trailer with no
06 plumbing, electricity or insulation in an area where temperatures hit 60 degrees below. Young sold his
07 Seattle sportswear company and set up the Red Feather Development Group. Its mission: to build homes
08 for needy Native Americans.

“I didn´t know how to build a house, attract volunteers or raise money,” he says. But when he told his
10 story to the media, donations jumped. Robert Redford and Pearl Jam´s Stone Gossard signed on.
11 Suddenly, attracting volunteers – including some who did know how to build – was easier.

In July 1995, Katherine Red Feather moved into a small house with a tiny front porch – a palace, if you
13 ask her. Since then, volunteers have built or fixed 35 homes on four reservations. Young´s goal is for tribes
14 to build their own housing. “That,” he says, “is the key for lasting change on reservations”.
