TRAVELING ABROAD...
Everybody who studies a foreign language dreams about travelling abroad to
have real contact with foreigners, improve their new language, know the country’s
culture and have more job opportunities. However, going to another country is not
just packing the bags and buying the boarding pass. There are a lot of things to do
and to organize in advance. Therefore, in this article you will find a lot of quick tips
to follow before travelling, during the trip and on the way back home. Focus on
exchange programs, the best and safest way of making your dream becomes true.

Firstly, you need to have in mind that the trip starts here in Brazil, once you
are presented to this new universe. So the first step is talking to your family about
your plans, whereas parents usually get worried about their children safety. It’s
necessary to think about how long you should spend abroad, where and with whom
you will stay, how much money they will spend, what is the best exchange program
company, and if something happens, what can you do. And, before the departure
day, the future exchanger should have lots of long talks with his family because
they will be essential to have a great trip.
Secondly, after convincing your parents that your idea is good, you should
search for a trustful exchange program company. The best way to do this is asking
for indication from people who have experience in it. Also, before signing a
contract, be sure the company is affiliated to national and international regulatory
institutions such as BELTA, BRASTOA, ABAV, EMBRATUR, WYSETC, WWAA, ALTO,
ISTC e IAPA. Then, at the company, a competent professional will guide you to the
best place with reasonable prices.
Thirdly, you can’t forget each country uses different criteria and
requirements in order to allow someone to enter and to be a resident. Check with
the embassy or consulate of the country you are traveling to what these
requirements are, according to the purpose of your trip. You also need to check the
period you can stay in the destination country, since the time will be determined by
the immigration authority at the point of entry. Take the addresses and telephone
numbers of Brazilian embassies and consulates to the country you are going to. In
case of problems do not hesitate to contact them. When traveling, always carry a
copy of your documents (identification card, voter registration card, certificate of
enlistment, birth or marriage certificate). They will be required to take a new
passport abroad in case of loss of the former one.
Finally, in this step you already know about the bureaucratic process. So, it’s
time to pack your baggage and put inside the clothes according to the weather of
the place you are going to. Don’t forget to make many plans for your trip, such as
what to do there, what will be the school you are going to study, the new friends
you might make, the hotel or the home you will stay in, how much knowledge you
will gain. On the other hand, nothing is perfect, you might have some troubles,
since you’re going to a different country, which has a different language, you might
have some difficulty to understand it because of lack of fluency, you may also have
some misunderstanding because of the cultural shock and you will miss your family
and friends. But don’t worry! It’s being calm and mature that you will become more
self-confident and prepared professionally and emotionally to face down all your
fears and beat them.

How did the trips help in your career?
Prof. Nivia Marcello: “I lived in Los Angeles (US) and Wimbledon (UK) in
the 1990’s. Being able to study and support myself in an alien environment
had a transforming effect on me. I definitely became more confident and it
raised my self-esteem.
Before studying overseas, whenever I applied for a job I had to answer that
question “Have you ever studied abroad?” I’m sure I was turned down in
more than one occasion for not having that highly valued experience!
My overseas experience had immediate and long-term impact. First, because
my English improved leaps and bounds and many doors were opened.
Second, because I was introduced to a world of possibilities and it made me
feel globally connected.”

Todo mundo que estuda um idioma diferente sonha em viajar para fora para
ter um contato real com estrangeiros, aperfeiçoar um novo idioma, conhecer a
cultura de outro país e ter mais oportunidades de emprego. Entretanto, ir a outro
país não consiste em apenas arrumar as malas e comprar as passagens aéreas. Há
muitas coisas a serem feitas e organizadas com antecedência. Portanto, neste
artigo, você encontrará várias dicas do que fazer antes de viajar, durante a viagem
e na volta ao seu país de origem, focando em programas de intercâmbio, o mais
procurado e seguro modo de fazer o seu sonho tornar-se realidade. Além disso,

Primeiramente, você precisa ter em mente que a viagem começa aqui no
Brasil, quando você é apresentado a esse novo universo. O primeiro passo é
conversar com a sua família sobre seus planos, considerando que os pais
geralmente se preocupam com a segurança de seus filhos, quanto tempo você deve
ficar fora, quanto eles vão gastar, qual é a melhor companhia de intercambio e se
acontecer alguma coisa com seu filho, o que eles poderão fazer. Antes do dia da
partida o futuro intercambista terá longas conversas com sua família, tais
conversas serão essenciais para fazer uma boa viagem.
Segundo, após convencer seus pais que sua ideia é boa, todos juntos devem
pesquisar uma empresa de intercâmbio confiável. A melhor maneira é procurando
indicações com pessoas que têm experiência no assunto. E antes de assinar
qualquer contrato, assegure-se de que a empresa é afiliada a órgãos nacionais e
internacionais como a BELTA, BRASTOA, ABAV, EMBRATUR, WYSETC, WWAA,
ALTO, ISTC e IAPA. Depois, na empresa um profissional competente lhe orientará
para que você tenha o melhor lugar com preço mais acessível.
Além disso, você não pode esquecer que cada país usa diferentes critérios e
exigências para a entrada e permanência de estrangeiros. Certifique-se junto à
Embaixada ou Consulado do país para onde for viajar sobre quais são esses
requisitos, dependendo do objetivo da sua viagem. Você também precisa checar o
período que você pode ficar no país de destino, já que o tempo é determinado pela
autoridade migratória no ponto de entrada. Leve consigo os endereços e telefones
das Embaixadas e Consulados brasileiros ao país de destino. Em caso de dificuldade
não hesite em contatá-las. Quando viajar, leve sempre cópia dos seus documentos
(carteira de identidade, título de eleitor, certificado de alistamento militar, certidão
de nascimento ou casamento). Eles serão necessários para tirar um novo
passaporte no exterior em caso de extravio do anterior.
Para concluir, agora que você já sabe sobre a parte burocrática. Então, é
hora de arrumar as malas e colocar as roupas de acordo com o clima do lugar que
você está indo. Não se esqueça de fazer muitos planos para sua viagem, como o
que fazer lá, como será a escola que você vai estudar, as novas amizades que você
vai fazer, o hotel ou a casa que você vai ficar, quanto conhecimento você vai
adquirir. Por outro lado, nem tudo é perfeito, talvez você tenha alguns problemas,
já que você está indo a um país diferente, cujo idioma também é diferente. Você
poderá ter dificuldade ao entendê-lo por conta da falta de fluência, e também
poderão acontecer alguns desentendimentos por conta do choque-cultural, você
também sentirá saudade da sua família e amigos. Mão não se preocupe! Ser calmo
e maduro o tornará mais autoconfiante, além de preparado profissional e
emocionalmente para enfrentar todos os seus medos e vencê-los.

intercâmbio, decidi terminar essa matéria com chave de ouro, perguntando-a:
Como as viagens ajudaram na sua carreira?
Prof. Nivia Marcello: “Eu morei em Los Angeles (EUA) e Wimbledon (Reino
Unido) na década de 90. Poder estudar e ganhar a vida em um ambiente
estranho teve um efeito transformador sobre mim. Eu definitivamente me
tornei mais confiante e essa experiência levantou minha autoestima.
Antes de morar fora, sempre que ia candidatar-me a uma vaga de emprego,
eu tinha de responder àquela famosa pergunta “Você já estudou no
exterior?” Tenho certeza de que fui rejeitada mais de uma vez por não ter
essa experiência altamente valorizada!
Minha experiência no exterior teve impacto imediato e em longo prazo.
Primeiro, porque o meu inglês melhorou consideravelmente e muitas portas
se abriram. “Em segundo lugar, porque fui apresentada a um mundo de
possibilidades e isso me fez sentir globalmente conectada.”
