This process involves high physical complexity due to the interaction of mechanical, thermal and microstructural phenomena, which can affect the joint integrity by changing the mechanical properties and the onset of residual stresses. The thermal phenomenon is considered one of the most critical one in the welding process, not only for being fundamental to the weld joint formation, but also because it is responsible for the occurrence of the mechanical and micro-structural phenomena. Furthermore, a precise representation of the heat source results in greater accuracy of the collected of thermodynamic data, and it consequently allows for a proper evaluation of the mechanical and the micro-structural behavior. This training course will cover the fundamentals for modeling the thermal phenomena in the welding process. In addition to the configuration and details related to thermal transient analyses, the resources for welding heat source modeling and proposals for simplifying the representation of geometry and heat source, involving 2D and 3D modeling of the process, will be presented.
