EMENTA He aim of this course is to introduce students to a brief view of English literature from its beginning to the Eighteen century. We will give emphasis to Shakespeare and his time by reading and discussing his plays and sonnets. 2. CONTEÚDO PROGRAMÁTICO Old and Middle English Literature – Beowulf – Geoffrey Chaucer – The Canterbury Tales. The Renaissance and Shakespeare – Plays and sonnets. John Donne and his metaphysical poems. Andrew Marvell. Civil War – John Milton and his time. The origin of the Novel – Daniel Defoe and his work Robinson Crusoe . The age of Reason – Gulliver´s Travels.
