Purpose
Epidemiological characterization of
patients with epileptic seizures at a
neurology outpatient clinic in a university in
Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Methods
Analysis of 245 medical records of
patients seen during the 4 years that this
clinic has been in operation - 120 days per
year - 2 to 3 new patients per day plus
several other "old" patients. The
quantitative study recorded the gender, age
group (with average, medium and standard
deviation), ethnicity and types of epileptic
seizures, during which the qualitative
findings highlightened the complementary
examinations and the physicians suggested
treatment.
Results
Out of 245, 20 suffered from seizures,
being 60% women and 40% men. The age
of the first one varied between 9 months
and 53 years old, being 19 years and 1
month old the average and 15 years old the
medium. The patients age of the last
seizure ranged from 16 to 53 years old, the
average of 33 years and 4 months old and
a medium of 33 years old.
Seven cases had generalized tonic-clonic
seizures, the others partial ones. Four EEG
were requested and carbamazepine was the
most prescribed antiepileptic drug.

Conclusion
Our data shows that most of the epileptic
patients had partial seizures. That finding,
added to the relatively old age of the
patients when the first ictus happened
point to the high number of individuals with
symptomatic epilepsy, mainly due to
infection of the central nervous system.
