7. Participação em projectos
7. Participation in research projects
Oct. 2007- Sept. 2010: Principal investigator of the project “Political
patronage in Portugal”.
This project received a grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and
Technology (FCT) [project reference: PTDC/CPO/65419/2006]
It is a partnership between the University of Aveiro, the Centro de Estudos Sociais
of the University of Coimbra and the Instituto de Ciências Sociais of the University
of Lisbon, and has three main objectives. First, it seeks to analyse the permeation,
reach and evolution of political patronage in Portugal. As such, it will develop a
comprehensive database of political appointments in Portugal since
democratisation that is expected to be of considerable use for the broader political
science community. Secondly, it will use this database, as well as research within
parties and public administration, to better understand the role that patronage can
play in political processes. In particular, the aim is to evaluate how it impacts on
party organisations, be it in terms of their entrenchment and intra-party dynamics;
how it correlates with the evolution of party system dynamics and democratisation
in Portugal; and the role and impact of party patronage in policy-making
processes. Finally, by being integrated in an international research network
analysing patronage in Europe, this project aims at analysing the Portuguese case
in a comparative perspective, and consequently widen the scope of its results.
Since 2001: Researcher in the Portuguese Election Studies
(“Comportamento Eleitoral e Atitudes Políticas dos Portugueses”) project,
with Professor António Barreto as Principal Investigator, since 2001. This project is
linked to several international projects and networks, namely the CSES
(Comparative Studies of Election Systems), the CNEP (Comparative National
Election Project), the EES (European Election Study) and INTUNE- Mass/Elites in a
Multi-Layered Europe.
From 2007: Researcher in the “Religiosity, Ideology and Voting in Europe”
project, with Professor José Ramon Montero as Principal Investigator. This project
has been granted financing by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science,
Dirección General de Investigación.
Since 2003: Member of a research team led by Professor Manuel Villaverde Cabral
that analyses Eurobarometer surveys biannually for the European Commission’s
Representation in Portugal.
2005-2006: researcher in the project “20 years of Portuguese membership in the
EU”, coordinated by Pedro Lains and Marina Costa Lobo.
2004: Participation in the "Euromanifestos" project, coordinated by the Social
Science Research Centre Berlin (WZB).
