The aim of this work was to study the effect of multi dose treatment using the polysaccharide purified from
Anacardium occidentale gum (free and P-JU-loaded liposomes)against experimental infection by S. mansoni.
Four animal groups (n=6/group) constitued by female albino swiss mice were infected by S. mansoni (BH
strain, 150 cercariae/animal) and treated with three doses of the drug (8th, 22th and 36th days after infection), as
follows: G1, control group (NaCl, 150mM); G2, free P-JU (10mg.Kg-1); G3, empty liposomes and G4, P-JUloaded liposomes (10 mg.Kg-1). These animals were killed 8 weeks after the infection, when porta-mesentheric
system perfusion was undertaken. It was observed a statistically significant reduction of eggs (Tukey Test,
p≤0,05) in G4 group (81.07% and 76.20% when compared to G1 and G3, respectively). There was a reduction
in the total recovery of adult (88.32% and 88.39%) and male worms (88.89% and 88.43%) in G4 group
compared to G1 and G3, respectively. The histopathological analysis of G4 livers showed a statistically
significant reduction in the number of granulomas showing necrosis (17.14% and 99.99% in view of G1 and
G2), granulomas with eggs (62.5%) and inflammatory infiltrates in order of 16.66%, 16.66% and 80.77%
compared to G1, G2 and G3 groups.
