Landfill (Aterro) | a documentary by Marcelo Reis, HD, 72 min. Year of release: 2011 Year of DVD release: 2012 Synopsis: Seven women, recycling pioneers of the sixties, talk about the seemingly unavoidable fate of waste. Long synopsis: Belo Horizonte is a planned city, built and inaugurated under the progressist precepts of the late XIX century. In about half a century, its waste output surpassed the limits of the waste management system and all garbage began being disposed of outdoors, less than 5Km from the city center. Aterro is a film about seven women who pioneered waste salvaging in Brazil. Facing the current and controversial landfilling system, they speak about the seemingly unavoidable fate of waste. About the film: The documentary Landfill was born from the perception of a paradox regarding waste. While most people want to get rid of it, some ladies I met, recycling pioneers, now miss other people’s waste lying next to their houses. Much has happened between the time when I met them and the time when I made this film, in the media, with all it’s fallacious discourse about sustainability, and in my personal relationship with garbage, when I became a homemaker. This film belongs to these seven women, who are truly experts on the subject. About the director: Marcelo Reis has been an audiovisual producer since he was 16.
