The artist Beatriz Milhazes has, over her career, become a symbol of Brazilian contemporary art.
In recent years she has won increasing global recognition for her whimsical, eccentric works,
characterized by striking use of colour. Her works portray the joy associated with Carnaval in
Brazil, with a visual force as bright as the gold she wears on her fingers.
This extravagance is not just conceptual. Milhazes' works have twice established her as Brazil's
most expensive living artist at international art auctions, a record which she still holds. One work
was snapped up last year in New York for R$ 4.9 million (US$ 2.1 million), just four years after
another painting had been sold for R$ 2.6 million (US$ 1.1 million).

It was not an easy task to unite all the works of Beatriz Milhazes now on display at the Paço
Imperial, in Rio de Janeiro. Her works are to be found all over the world, from the Guggenheim
in New York to Malba in Buenos Aires, as well as in the houses of art collectors in various
countries.
The German publisher Taschen is also due to publish a book next year which will cement
Milhazes' international status. It shares the same objective as the exhibition in Rio - to unite in a
single volume the complete oeuvre of the artist. A documentary film about the artist is also due
to be launched next year.
Milhazes is no newcomer to the international scene, having already had important exhibitions in
France, Switzerland, Portugal and Japan.
She has a large exhibition planned for next year, in the new wing of the Pérez Art Museum in
Miami, designed by the Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron. This will be the first in a series
of retrospectives in the United States.
One clue as to may what lie ahead is the most recent work on display at the Paço Imperial,
'Chiclete com Banana' (Chewing Gum with Banana), in which the artist incorporates optical
illusions and the repertoire of kinetic movement.

Não foi fácil reunir todas as obras de Beatriz Milhazes que estão no Paço Imperial. Há telas no
mundo inteiro, como no Guggenheim, em Nova York, ou no Malba, em Buenos Aires, e em
casas de colecionadores pelo mundo.
Um livro que sai no ano que vem pela badalada editora alemã Taschen terá a mesma premissa -ilustrar num único e luxuoso volume toda a produção da artista. O livro turbina o seu momento
de consagração lá fora.
Milhazes não é novata no circuito internacional, e já teve mostras de peso na Suíça, França,
Portugal e Japão.
No ano que vem, a lista deve engrossar com uma grande exposição na nova ala do Pérez Art
Museum, em Miami, desenhada pela dupla suíça Herzog & De Meuron. Será o primeiro passo
para uma série de retrospectivas nos EUA.
Em novembro, sua mostra do Paço Imperial irá para o Museu Oscar Niemeyer, em Curitiba, e ela
abrirá em São Paulo uma individual com novas obras na Fortes Vilaça.
Um sinal do que vem por aí é a pintura mais recente que está no Paço, "Chiclete com Banana",
em que a artista incorpora ilusões de ótica e o repertório do movimento cinético à tela.
Tudo isso ficará registrado em filme no ano que vem, quando será lançado um documentário
sobre a artista.
