Background
The concept of Extended Musical Performance does not only define one way of art, but several ways in which sound and
performance are just one vehicle of expression. One of the most relevant aspects facing this concept is related with an
enormous diversity of activities included in it, which go from interactive installations to film, from fine art to performance, from
poetry to sculpture and of course music. Partly that had to do with homemade electronics, partly with exploration of the nature of acoustics, partly with crossing the lines between theatre, visual arts, poetry and music. When finding a piece of Intermedia Art, we can be in the presence of several types of work. Some may be extremely interactive and resort to more advanced technologies, while others may be rather simple and static, but in all of the cases, the receptor’s psychological state
will never remain passive or indifferent. In this context SoundofShadows proposes some fields of action rooted here.
As a saxophonist, my early musical orientation manifested itself in close contact with contemporary music and improvised
music. The last years of work led me to collaborate directly with different composers and performers, to create new repertoire and musical narrative exploring sound and technology as an augmented performance interface. Among these collaborations, I would like to highlight Rolf Gehlhaar, Luis Girão, Michael Edwards, Victor Rua, Dominic Murcott and Martin Parker
which so far decisively contributed to my evolution as a multi-instrumentalist and creator of intermedia art.

SoundofShadows
Sound of Shadows was created by the artist Henrique Portovedo. Premiered in 2009 at ESMAE-IPP, the show reaches its
climax in early 2012 with the DVD release at the University of Edinburgh. The exploration of soundscapes from urban
environments and experiences in everyday life of the twenty-first century is assumed as the root of this production. Sound of
Shadows is a multidisciplinary performance by integrating acoustic and electronic elements using the latest technologies in
the field of Sonic and Intermedia Art. The works performed are part of a repertoire mostly written for
the saxophonist
Henrique Portovedo and composed in the third millennium from composer such as Luís Girão, Martin Parker, Hugo Correia
and Vitor Rua. The sounds sequence is created by interactive media systems which constantly change the sound palette.
