BEAU’S CONCEPT TO LIFE: AN INTERACTIVE SCULPTURE MADE UP
OF 2,300 OPTICAL CRYSTALS AND 82,000 LED LIGHTS
I
n light of recent events, we’re surprised
we’ve even managed to catch Beau. But
luckily for us, the Algarve is where the multitalented Scot comes to get his feet back on
the ground and escape from his hectic life.
Beau McClellan, who could easily be
found in his recording studio, on a film set or
in a blacksmith’s workshop, is currently basking in the glow of his biggest project by far:
Reflective Flow, a feat of mammoth proportions in Doha, Qatar.
The best teams in the world were selected to bring his concept to life: an interactive
sculpture made up of 2,300 optical crystals
and 82,000 LED lights to make an organic
art sculpture by day and a striking, everchanging chandelier by night.
Now one of the world’s most respected
light designers, the culmination of an awardwinning career filled with high-end projects
throughout the world, nobody can say that it
has been a straightforward journey. In fact,
listing Beau’s achievements and tracing his
career path is almost as intricate as most of
his designs.
Having left school not knowing what to
do, a short stint at art college introduced
Beau to the wonders of metal work. With a

recentes, foi uma surpresa termos conseguido falar com o Beau. Mas, felizmente para nós,
o Algarve é o local para onde este multi-facetado
escocês se dirige para assentar os pés na terra e
escapar da sua vida héctica.
Beau McClellan, que pode facilmente ser
encontrado num estúdio de música, no set de um
filme ou até na oficina de um ferreiro, está neste
momento a gozar os louros do seu maior projecto até agora: o Reflective Flow, uma façanha de
proporções gigantescas em Doha, no Qatar.
Foram seleccionadas as melhores equipas do
mundo para dar vida a este conceito: uma escultura interactiva constituída por 2.300 cristais ópticos e 82.000 luzes LED para alcançar uma escultura orgânica de dia, e um candelabro impressionante e em constante mutação, de noite.
O facto de ser considerado actualmente um
dos mais respeitados designers de iluminação é o
culminar de uma carreira premiada, repleta de
projectos de topo por todo o mundo. Ninguém
pode dizer, no entanto, que foi um percurso linear.
Na verdade, enumerar as suas conquistas e percurso profissional é quase tão complexo como a
maioria dos seus designs.
Beau deixou a escola sem saber bem o que fazer, e foi a pequena passagem por uma escola de
arte que o introduziu às maravilhas do trabalho EssentialLight

In 1991 and with the break-up of his
music band, Beau moved to Loulé in the
Algarve. With a passion for working with
forged steel as an art form, Beau and his
company, Ferro Design, quickly made their
mark and soon they were making bespoke
pieces for clients in the affluent area of
Quinta do Lago which, according to Beau,
was “a fantastic place to start”. In increasingly high demand both in Portugal and abroad,
Ferro Design had already caught the eye of
former Loulé Town Hall mayor and longtime admirer of the company’s work,
Joaquim Vairinhos, who commissioned Beau
and his team to build a public sculpture for
the town. Zephyrus (see page XX), a piece
inspired on the Portuguese maritime discoveries, placed the company in a completely
different playing field.
In the meantime, Beau was building sets
after doing production for steel photography
for high fashion magazines. This is where we
begin to glimpse the “intense and crazy life”
that Beau so often refers to. And as something of a pattern with everything he turns
his hand to, the skilfully constructed sets
were well received and led to set production
for companies such as Coca-Cola. Adding
‘set director’ and then ‘art director’ to his evergrowing list of achievements – and let’s not
forget that with his own music studio, Beau
was still writing music for adverts and films,
as well as running a gallery –, the creative
believes that all his projects were interlinked.
“I found that all of these things melted into
one and there was a crossover of inspiration
in everything we were doing. The problem
was that I was just doing too many things.”
And with the running of a second company,
Stray Dog Productions, it’s no wonder that
Beau describes this as “a crazy, crazy time”.
But it was his steel work that would propel him into a whole new world, when one of
his clients asked him to make a chandelier.
His first creations were heavy stainless steel

pieces, and although beautiful, he admits: “I
knew nothing about lighting and we were
just blagging our way through”. Actually,
these first pieces are now becoming greatly
sought after as collectables.
Beau soon realised there was a gap in the
lighting market for large, one-off pieces and,
having tired somewhat of black steel, set off
on a journey to learn about the lighting
industry.
He combed the world’s lighting fairs, but
Milan was Beau’s greatest source of inspiration. “The Italians have been the leaders in
iconic lighting design for years. If you think
about design properly and give it enough care
and respect, then it will become iconic and it
can carry on for years.” It was at one of these
fairs that Beau wandered onto the stand of
German lighting company Brumberg, where
the aspiring lighting designer became fascinated by the use of LED lights and fibre
optics. He asked the company to send him
their leftover material and with “this huge
collection of junk and a bit of information”,
he made his first LED chandelier – Icicle.
After rave reviews, Brumberg invited him to
design his own range for the company and, in
2007, pieces from the Beau McClellan
range, which comprised 14 different lights,
went on to win four Red Dots at the prestigious design awards, an unprecedented feat
for a self-taught designer. Beau McClellan
had arrived.
Meanwhile, former client and future
business partner Simon Berger had proposed
taking his portfolio to the Middle East. Having
generated great interest and with the subsequent media attention following the coveted
award wins, Beau became “the new kid on
the block” in the Middle East. As he established himself in the design world once and
for all, he became the go-to man for some of
the world’s biggest projects, such as Dubai’s
Maritime City and Donald Trump’s Trump
Hotel. But it was Reflective Flow, a giant
chandelier based on a river concept that
‘runs’ through the gorge-like Al Hitmi office
building, that would be Beau’s proverbial
icing on the cake. A pioneering interactive
project, the sculpture comprises low resolution screens with ever-changing content that
reacts to movement and temperature, and as
it’s made of mirrored glass, reflects everything around it. As night falls, the art piece
lights up and takes on a whole new meaning.
So with enormous projects already in the
pipeline worldwide, how did lighting take on
such a huge dimension? Apparently, it all
comes down to music. “Light is very much
like music in the way that you can create
emotion very quickly,” explains the designer.
But the best design he’s ever made? Beau
makes no hesitation: “my little boy, Skye.”

ambição renovada de se tornar num artista ferreiro, Beau aprendeu as técnicas tradicionais e formas clássicas das modernas obras de escultura.
Em 1991, com a dissolução da sua banda,
mudou-se para Loulé, no Algarve. Mostrando
grande paixão pelo trabalho em ferro forjado,
Beau e a sua empresa, a Ferro Design, diferenciaram-se rapidamente e começaram a produzir
peças personalizadas para os clientes da Quinta
do Lago que, segundo Beau, foi “um local fantástico para começar”. Com uma procura crescente,
em Portugal e no estrangeiro, a Ferro Design chamou a atenção do antigo presidente da Câmara
de Loulé, Joaquim Vairinhos, que escolheu Beau e
a sua equipa para a construção de uma escultura
pública para a cidade. Zephyrus (ver artigo na
página XX), uma peça inspirada pelos
Descobrimentos, colocou a empresa num sector
completamente diferente.
Pelo meio, Beau construía ainda cenários e
fazia produções para revistas de moda. É aqui que
nos começamos a aperceber da “vida intensa e
louca” que Beau tantas vezes menciona. Os cenários habilmente construídos foram bem aceites e
levaram-no a produzir cenários para empresas
como a Coca-Cola. Com os cargos de “director de
set” e “director de arte” também no currículo – e,
não nos esqueçamos que, através do seu próprio
estúdio de música, Beau também compunha
música para publicidade e filmes, para além de
dirigir uma galeria -, o criativo acredita que todos
os seus projectos estavam interligados. “Acho que
todas estas coisas se fundiram numa só e houve
uma transposição da inspiração em tudo o que
fazíamos. O problema era que eu estava a fazer
demasiadas coisas.” E, com a gestão de uma
segunda empresa, a Stray Dog Productions, não
admira que Beau descreva este período como
“uma época louca”.
Mas, seria o seu trabalho em ferro que o iria
projectar para um novo mundo, quando um dos
seus clientes lhe pediu para fazer um candelabro.
As suas primeiras criações eram peças pesadas
de aço inoxidável e, apesar de belas, Beau admite:
“Eu não percebia nada de iluminação mas iamonos desenrascando.” Actualmente, estas peças
iniciais estão a tornar-se muito procuradas por
coleccionadores.
Beau depressa se apercebeu que havia uma
lacuna no mercado para peças grandes e únicas e,
retirando-se de certo modo do mundo do ferro
forjado, embarcou numa viagem para aprender
mais sobre a indústria da iluminação.
Percorreu feiras de iluminação pelo mundo,
mas Milão foi a sua maior fonte de inspiração. “Os
italianos são os líderes do design icónico de iluminação há anos. Se pensarmos bem sobre o design
e lhe dermos atenção e respeito suficientes, irá
tornar-se icónico e poderá durar anos.” Foi numa
destas feiras que Beau encontrou o stand da
empresa de iluminação alemã Brumberg, onde o
aspirante a designer de iluminação ficou fascinado pelo uso de luzes LED e de fibra óptica.
Pediu à empresa que lhe enviasse sobras do
material e, “com esta enorme colecção de tralha e
um pouco de informação”, fez o seu primeiro candelabro LED – o Icicle. Após ter obtido excelentes
críticas, a Brumberg convidou-o a desenhar a sua
própria gama para a empresa e, em 2007, as peças
da gama Beau McClellan, que englobava 14 obras
diferentes, venceram quatro prestigiados prémios
de design Red Dots, um feito sem precedentes
para um designer autodidacta. Beau McClellan
tinha chegado.
Entretanto, o antigo cliente e futuro parceiro
de negócios Simon Berger propôs-se a levar o seu
portfólio para o Médio Oriente. Com a atenção
mediática que recebeu após os prémios de
design, Beau tornou-se na mais recente importação do Médio Oriente. Enquanto se estabelecia
no mundo do design de uma vez por todas, tornou-se ainda no designer obrigatório para alguns
dos maiores projectos do mundo, como a Cidade
Marítima do Dubai e o Hotel Trump de Donald
Trump. Mas, foi o Reflective Flow, um candelabro
gigante baseado num conceito de rio que “corre”
pelo edifício de escritórios Al Hitmi, que se tornou
na cereja em cima do bolo para Beau.
A escultura, um projecto interactivo pioneiro,
inclui ecrãs de baixa resolução com conteúdo em
constante mudança, que reagem ao movimento
e à temperatura. Feita de vidro espelhado, a
escultura reflecte tudo à sua volta. Quando a
noite cai, a obra de arte ilumina-se e ganha um
novo significado.
Com enormes projectos na calha por todo o
mundo, como é que a iluminação ganhou tamanha dimensão? Pelos vistos, está tudo relacionado com a música. “A luz é muito semelhante à
música no sentido em que podemos criar emoção rapidamente,” explica o designer. E qual é o
melhor design que já fez? Beau não hesita: “O meu
filho, Skye.”
