Comissão Nacional de Cabo Verde para a UNESCO United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Cabo Verde National Commission for UNESCO Ministério do Ensino Superior, Ciência e Inovação International Colloquium Stakes of Scientific Research on Slavery and Challenges of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) Date: 28 October 2015 (Morning and Afternoon) Uni-CV Rectorate Auditorium Framework The University of Cape Verde, in the scope of its mission, as a center of creation, dissemination and promotion of culture, science and technology, by establishing the straight link between study and research, in order to promote human development, as a strategic factor of sustainable development of the country, promotes, in partnership with the Cabo Verde National Commission for UNESCO, the International Colloquium: Stakes of Scientifc Research on Slavery and Challenges of the International Decade for People of African Descent. With the implementation of this event one seeks also to bring to Uni-CV, researchers from various national and linguistic backgrounds and realizing its mission of internationality as well. That's the way how it has been assumed in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanity, the challenge of organizing this International Conference, also understood as an academic outreach activity, basically an educational, cultural and scientific process that articulates teaching and research, for the production and dissemination of universal knowledge. Thus, Uni-CV and researchers involved in the event will be contributing to spread out, within the academy and the society itself, the duty of the reconciliation with historical memory and the recognition of common heritages. This is the ambitious plan, at this juncture, of the project the Slave Route, a joint project UNESCO and the University of Cabo Verde, which on the one hand, reflects the purpose of breaking the silence on the slave trade and slavery in different regions of the world, involving, specially, several African nations and, on the other, deals with the wish to change the attitudes within the African descents, understanding that the concealment of major historical events that have shaped our modern societies is, in itself, an obstacle to dialogue and to reconciliation with the historical memory. The key issues and challenges related to the implementation of the African descent Decade should be enhanced by each lecturer by taking into account the presented theme.
