News Letter 7 25.09.2014 © R. Seliger, 2014 Evaluation of degraded pastures with focus on soil Erosion and Assessment for Rehabilitation / Re Re--cultivation measures INTECRAL Work Package 3: Land Restoration and Conservation INTECRAL project is a jointly developed scientific cooperation supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock Project Rio Rural (SEAPECPRR). It aims to improve the competitiveness of the rural economic sector in due consideration of a sustainable watershed management, including environmental risk mitigation and protection of natural resources. 1 Evaluation of degraded pastures with focus on soil erosion and assessments for rehabilitation / re-cultivation measures The research has been carried out between March 6th and May 31st under the framework of the INTECRAL work package 3 activities “assessment of land degradation” and “restoration of degraded area at pilot location”. University of Leipzig - IfG, Rio Rural, EMATER, INEA, EMBRAPA Solos. out focusing on three major activity lines. First: getting in contact with all relevant scientists, institutions and stakeholders directly or potentially important for the acquisition of information and data on (pasture) degradation in RJ. Second: extended field excursions for in-situ mapping, ground proofing and documenting degradation and erosion marks on pastures. Third: the pre-selection of potential pilot areas for a rehabilitation measure and the establishment of contacts to the respective land owners. Collaborators Relevant results The work has been performed by PhD student Roman Seliger, supervised by Prof. Jürgen Heinrich and Dr. Dietmar Sattler (University of Leipzig) and in collaboration with Marcelo Costa, Helga Hissa, Marcos André Dias Jogaib and Adriano Lopes (SEAPEC PRR), José Matias Silva Rocha, Evanildo Rangel Junior, Mateus Aguiar, Walker de Azevedo Araujo, (EMATER Itaocara), Ademir Paulo Chrissostomo das Virgens, Leonardo dias Figueiredo do Carmo, Antônio Gonçalves da Silva, Kissila França Lima, Kênya Fança Lima, Flavio Gonçalves de Souza (EMATER Porciúncula) and Rosane Maria Bendia Grazoli, Manoel Duarte Ramos Filho, José Luiz Abreu Diniz, Miguel Angelo Engelhardt (EMATER Varre-Sai), Silvia Adriana Fins Alfonso, Luíz Dias, Julia Kishida Bochner (INEA), Aluísio Granato de Andrade and Elaine Fidalgo (EMBRAPA Solos). The main results of this assessment can be summarized as: Involved institutions Detailed overview of the actual situation regarding existing knowledge, data availability and data gaps. A data entry form “degraded areas” has been developed (and adjusted with Rio Rural and EMBRAPA) for in-situ terrain and soil data. Two potential properties have been selected for a pilot rehabilitation measure. Next steps The next steps for the period 2014—2015 correspond to: Research area Stakeholder workshop in Itaocara and Varre Sai for defining a regional landscape development goal (November 2014). The research took place in Itaocara (Valão do Barro Preto), Porciúncula and Varre Sai (Riberão da Onça). Implementation planning for pilot rehabilitation measure (until March 2015).
