football for hope final report, 26 to 29 June 2013, Belo Horizonte, Brazil 2 Football for Hope Forum 2013 / Final Report A GREAT SUCCESS Dear friends of football, We are delighted to share with you the report of the Football for Hope Forum 2013. It was a great privilege to be able to host you in Brazil to exchange, discuss and learn from each other. We hope you enjoyed your time during the FIFA Confederations Cup and came away feeling revived and inspired. FIFA is passionate about embracing the popularity of football to improve the lives of young people. As football becomes a bigger economic and social force in the world, it is vital that we ensure the beautiful game plays its part in building a better future for all. Your work in this field is a true inspiration to everyone at FIFA. We are delighted to work with you and to be able to support your work through Football for Hope. Thank you again on behalf of everyone at FIFA for the great work that you do. Joseph S. Blatter FIFA President 3 Dear friends, Dear guests, On behalf of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ Local Organising Committee (LOC), I would like to thank you for your participation in FIFA’s 2nd Football for Hope Forum in Belo Horizonte. Over four days, you had a great opportunity to exchange experiences with representatives of more than 130 projects from more than 40 nations and to showcase initiatives which promote development through football. I hope you enjoyed your time in Belo Horizonte and left the conference inspired by each other’s ideas. I know some of you were lucky enough to have the chance to watch Brazil-Uruguay in the semi-final of the FIFA Confederations Cup at the Mineirão stadium. I look forward to seeing some of you again next year for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™. Kind regards, Ricardo Trade CEO of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ Local Organising Committee This report on the second Football for Hope Forum, held last June in the city that I have the honour and challenge of governing, Belo Horizonte, summarises a set of football-related experiences such as the promotion and encouragement of active citizenship and better living conditions. Among these are the experiences of previous World Cup host countries which generated a realistic range of possibilities and challenges for the preparations of this major event. The preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ have been an opportunity for us to do more, and better, in various areas of the Municipal Government’s field of activity by seeking to broaden our cooperation with other levels of government and with more diverse social, economic and sports stakeholders who, like us, want to build a legacy for the people of this city in a transparent and democratic way. This publication will reinforce that mission which, just like all missions, must constantly be assessed and improved. Warmest regards, Marcio Lacerda Mayor of Belo Horizonte 4 Football for Hope Forum 2013 / Final Report Football for Hope Forum 2013 As the tournament of champions reached its exciting finale in Brazil, FIFA brought together football champions of a different kind at the 2nd Football for Hope Forum. Football can boast of many heroes in its rich and fascinating history, but there are some heroes in the game who far too often fall under the radar – those who are harnessing the power and popularity of football to build a better future. From educating children in health awareness to bringing together young people in conflict zones, grassroots organisations, sports institutions, global corporations and development institutions are using football to improve lives. FIFA, the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ Local Organising Committee Brazil and the Host City of Belo Horizonte invited representatives from over 130 of these organisations from 43 countries to attend the 2nd Football for Hope Forum in Brazil during the FIFA Confederations Cup as part of a long-term strategy to support social development work that uses football as a platform for change. “For us it was a pleasure to participate in the forum, and for me personally it was an enriching experience.” Lucía Avellanal, Gurises Unidos Staged between 26 and 29 June in Belo Horizonte, one of the Host Cities of the FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, delegates had the chance to exchange ideas, network and discuss crucial and current topics in their field. Described by FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke as a unique event that “brings together leaders and founders of community-based organisations that use football in their daily social work”, the forum examined how to maximise football’s contribution to social development in Brazil and beyond. “We have here the ‘who’s who’ of social development work through football,” said Federico Addiechi, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at FIFA, at the opening. “All of them represent institutions that are doing a great job in utilising the power of the game of football as a language and a tool for social development and for dealing with social issues in the most disadvantaged communities of the world.” 5 The Forum in numbers 193 registered participants 134 ORGANISATIONS 43 countries represented 67 participants from Brazil 45 speakers 6 Football for Hope Forum 2013 / Final Report Passing the ball from South Africa to Brazil “At the forum, we had the ‘who is who’ of social development work through football. All of them people representing institutions that are doing a great job in utilising the power of the game of football as a tool for social development, for dealing with social issues in the most disadvantaged communities of the world.” Federico Addiechi Head of FIFA Corporate Social Responsibility 7 The opening session of the 2nd Football for Hope Forum on 26 June in Belo Horizonte was much more than just an official welcome at a conference. It was a reunion of friends after the 1st Football for Hope Forum which took place in South Africa in 2009. After FIFA’s Federico Addiechi had warmly welcomed the participants, Sikhumbuzo Mnculwane from Grassroot Soccer took over as a representative from South Africa. He spoke about the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ for his country and for his personal career in development through football. After that, he passed the ball to Diane Sousa from the Instituto Formação, Brazil, who gave an inspiring speech emphasising the unique opportunity presented by the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ for social change in her country. After the opening session, all participants had the opportunity to see the clash between two South American powerhouses, Uruguay and Brazil, at the semi-final of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 and to experience the breathtaking atmosphere in the sold-out Minerão stadium. In an intense match, the Seleção won in the dying moments with a goal by Paulinho. The resulting contributions from representatives from India, Israel, Kenya, Australia, Hungary and Zambia were musical, funny, thoughtful and, above all, inspiring. Anne Bunde-Birouste from Football United opened the floor with “Field of Dreams”, an emotional song that had been specifically produced for and recorded together with young participants of Football United’s programmes. Ashok Rathod, founder of the Oscar Foundation, an organisation addressing community issues in the Ambedkar Nagar slum in Mumbai talked about the implications of early marriage and his work in educating young people and proudly claimed: “I never got married but I gave birth to Oscar [Foundation]”. Tami Hay from the Peres Centre for Peace in Israel gave an emotional and encouraging speech about the political situation in the Middle East and closed with the words: “We were educated to hate but when I see these kids playing together it gives me hope that we can – one day – live in peace” Tami Hay, Peres Centre For Peace (Israel) Ashok Rathod, Oscar Foundation (India) 9 A highlight of the forum programme was the visit of two FIFA World Cup™ winners from 1994 and 2002, Jorge de Amorim Campos (known as Jorghino) and José Edmílson. After the end of their illustrious football careers, both decided that they wanted to give back to the community that had supported them throughout their careers. They each founded their own organisations in Brazil supporting young people. During the interview on stage, Jorghino and Edmílson both showed their passion for the use of football for social change and encouraged the forum participants to continue their meaningful work in their communities around the world. 10 Football for Hope Forum 2013 / Final Report PANEL sessions The programme at the forum also included a number of panel discussions. On the opening day, FIFA’s Federico Addiechi and three Brazilian delegates explored and debated the origins of the protests during the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and argued that the challenge facing everyone present was how to use the power of football to tackle those social inequalities and injustices that lay behind Brazilians’ anger and concern. Other panel sessions discussed the use of football to promote youth participation and leadership, collaboration between non-governmental organisations and the private sector and the challenges and opportunities of collaborating with football associations and leagues. “Why Brazilians are taking to the street” From left to right: Heloísa Andrade – Instituto Companheiros das Américas, José Ricardo Caporal – Associação Cristã de Moços do Rio Grande do Sul, Diane Sousa – Instituto Formação, Federico Addiechi – FIFA “A strong team: collaborating with football associations and leagues” Panellists: Thierry Regenass – FIFA Director of Member Associations & Development, Jürgen Griesbeck – CEO of streetfootballworld, Renato Paes de Andrade – Instituto Fazer Acontecer Thierry Regenass, FIFA Director of Member Associations & Development 11 “Win-win!? Thinking ahead: sustainable events management Facilitated by Laura Valente de Macedo, Consultant on Sustainability Policies and Management, Adviser to the World Resources Institute (WRI) Networking: how to network and find potential partners Facilitated by Steffi Biester, co-founder and director of KICKFAIR “One exercise when looking for sustainable solutions is to think back to how your grandmother did things. Today we live in a throw-away society where everything is disposable and if we look back to how things were done in the past, we will find many practical (and sometimes surprisingly apparent) solutions that work locally.” “To make collaboration a success, make it a process – not a result of a formula or the product of a structure!” Towards a sustainable future: resource mobilisation in the Development through Football sector Facilitated by Charlotte Obidairo, Managing Director of Pan-African consultancy Coxswain Social Investment plus (CSI+) “Be conscious of what they want to do, what you want to do and find the sweet spot or convergence.” Measuring impact: developing an effective monitoring and evaluation system Facilitated by Katrin Elsemann, responsible for network development at streetfootballworld “One of the key factors in measuring impact is to avoid data overload because not everything that can be counted counts.” Planning ahead: developing a compelling strategy Facilitated by Sarah Forde, consultant based in Kenya and founder of Moving the Goalposts. Measuring impact: developing an effective monitoring and evaluation system Facilitated by Naercio Menezes, Professor of Economics and consultant to Fundação Itaú Social. Sustaining income: developing your own services and products to generate funds Facilitated by Steve Fleming, co-founder of Kick4Life “Social enterprise at Kick4Life means both improving organisational sustainability and empowering participants to achieve sustainable livelihoods.” Spreading your message: communicating the work you do Facilitated by Simon Lansley, Head of Communications at Street League “An effective communications strategy will drive participation and increase funding opportunities and (…) should not be viewed as time or labour intensive, but something which should be done ‘little and often’ on an ongoing basis.” 16 Football for Hope Forum 2013 / Final Report Showcase football-based methods for social projects Around the world, organisations use different methodologies and curricula in the implementation of football-based social programmes. While approaches towards achieving positive social development through football vary across organisations and countries, the goals remain the same: empowering young participants and delivering a message. Ten different organisations presented their own unique approaches in using football to transform their communities – addressing HIV prevention, social integration, the fight against corruption and youth empowerment. Each session actively engaged the forum attendees and provided valuable insights into the diverse range of approaches which use football to build a better future for young people. 17 Coming to an end On 29 June, the Football for Hope Forum in Belo Horizonte came to an end. The final proceedings were closing words from Federico Addiechi and Heloísa Andrade and a farewell by the Mayor of Belo Horizonte who closed the event and welcomed onto the stage Fuleco, the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ mascot, as final surprise guest! 18 Football for Hope Forum 2013 / Final Report Participants Organisation 2018 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee Russia adidas adidas AFC Albion in the Community (GBR) AMANDLA EduFootball e.V.
