Barcelos is a Municipality located in te District of Braga in the north of Portugal.
It has a total population of 123,831 and na área of 378.9 km. The city itself has a population of

General Information
Barcelos is one of the growing municipalities in the country, especially in Minho metropolitan área
and is well known by its textile and adobe industries.
History
Originally a Roman settlement, it expanded and became the seat of the First Duke of Bragança in the
15th century. The palace of the Dukes of Bragança was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and is
now na open-air museum.
- GALO DE BARCELOS
The town’s famous symbol is a rooster, in Portuguese called galo de Barcelos(“the rooster of
Barcelos”). The legend says that a rich man threw a big party. Whemn the party was over, the rich
man noticed that His sterling cutlery was stolen by a guest. He accused a pilgrim and let him go to
court, He protested his innocence but the judge didn’t believe him. The judge was about to eat a
roasted rooster when the pilgrim said: “ If I am innocent, this rooster will crow three times .” When
the pilgrim was about to be lynched, the rooster crowed. The judge release the pilgrim. The story
ends a few years later when the pilgrim returned and made a statue over the event.

Braga:
Braga a city and municipality in northwestern Portugal, is the capital of the district of Braga, the

Guimarães :
Is a city in Minho,Portugal and is one of the most historical cities in Portugal, said to be where
"Portugal was born". It is the first city of Portugal, and have a beautiful Castle, and a Palace to visit,
from the beginnings of the country. The Castle has been classified as one of the New Portuguese
Seven Wonders. The first King (D. Afonso Henriques aka D. Afonso, I of Portugal) is still being
idolized by the city. Placed about 50 km from Porto, Guimarães is placed near to a mountain, Penha,
with wonderful views to all the city.
History:
The city was founded upon much older settlements by Count Vimara Peres after His
namesake(Vimaranis, later Guimaranis), soon after he established the 1st County of Portugal (in
868). As the first capital of Portugal , Guimarães is known as the place where the country as born –
“The Cradle City”. In 1095 Count Henry of Burgundy, who had married princess Teresa of Léon,
establishes in Guimarães the 2nd County of Portugal (CondadoPortucalense). In July 25, 1109 Afonso
Henriques, sono f Count Henry of Burgundy, is born in this same city. That is whereDuke Afonso
Henriques proclaimed Portuguese independence from the Kingdom of León, after the Battle of São
Mamede, declaring himself to be Afonso I, King of Portugal.
Economy:
Guimarães is one of the most industrial municipalities in Portugal. Its primary industries are textiles,
shoe industry and metalomechanics
Guimarães is the European Capital of Culture 2012, a great honor to this city, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
