INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS
TROPICAL KNOWLEDGE IN MOZAMBIQUE: HISTORY, MEMORY AND SCIENCE
IICT – AHU, 24- 26 OCTOBER 2012
The INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS TROPICAL KNOWLEDGE IN MOZAMBIQUE: HISTORY,
MEMORY AND SCIENCE is the result of the collaboration between research teams pertaining
to various projects of the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (IICT), funded by the
Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) in the context of the the History of Science
Programme. It intends to present studies and data based upon research in progress in
different academic disciplines, part of which was produced in collaboration with Mozambican
institutions.
In the context of East Africa, Mozambique stands at the crossroads of Oriental and Western
influences, and occupies an intermediate place between the Indian and Atlantic oceans, which
is borne out by the growing number of research and development projects. The International
Conference will serve as a platform in order to provide greater visibility for academic
researchers and their work, and thereby promote wider interest in the country while taking
into account the role played by scientific research in its development.
The International Conference will give priority to comparative and interdisciplinary
approaches that take into account historical, anthropological, sociological, cultural, economic,
political, biological and environmental perspectives, including technical aspects of the
preservation of its cultural heritage and collective memory. The meeting expects to
provide a historical perspective on local, regional and global issues, as well as recognizing
the importance of indigenous and scientific knowledge in present day Mozambique. The
International Conference will also include an exhibition of archival documents and objects
which testifies to and reflects upon the diversity and multidisciplinary nature of the meeting’s
approach while providing insights into the wealth of sources used by researchers for their work
on and in the country.
The meeting intends to contribute towards a better understanding of the past and present
situation of Mozambique, in order to help identify certain problems and chalenges and discuss
possible solutions.
