Brasília
Brasília is the capital of Brazil. It is the place where the
urban architecture allows the beautiful blue sky and
horizon to be appreciated, and the natural lighting to be
enjoyed. The architecture, unique in the world, makes the
city the largest collection of modern architecture set under
open skies. The spacious gardens and the thousands of
trees planted all around, as well as the flowers in between
the monuments, fulfill the desire for the ‘country life’.
Brasília is located in a federal district created from a
taken piece of land originally located in Goiás State , in
the center of the country. It is situated on a 1000 m tall
plateau called the “Planalto Central”. It was constructed
between 1956 and 1960, during the government of
President Juscelino Kubitschek. It was inaugurated as
Brazil’s new capital on April 21, 1960.
Its master plan, the “Plano Piloto” (the Pilot Plan, as Brasília
is shaped as an airplane), was conceived by Lucio Costa,
and its major buildings were designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
Landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx planned the
layout and selection of plant varieties to add a vivid green
backdrop to the otherwise dry, yellow landscape of the
savanna vegetation.
Lúcio Costa’s plan for the city was detailed and thorough.

urban conception, and its political, economic and social
importance that comes from the decisions made by the
Three Branches of Power.

Brasilia’s urban planning project drafted by Lucio Costa
and its daring architecture by Oscar Niemeyer have drawn
the attention of the world to this city inaugurated on April
21, 1960 and already appointed by UNESCO – a World
Heritage.
Lucio Costa divided the city in three sections: for business,
residential and the government axis. Addresses in
Brasilia, are written SQS – meaning Super Block South
– plus a number. These super blocks are an all-inclusive
neighborhood with services, food stores, service stations,
etc.
Tour will visit a super block of the southern zone and
among others, famous Niemeyer’s buildings. Dom Bosco
Santuary (the Blue Church); TV Tower, Military Sector, JK
Memorial, Cathedral, Ministry’s axis; Itamaraty Palace
