EDITORIAL ORIENTATION AND
PUBLICATION RULES
I - Editorial guidelines and general information
The Jornal de Psicanálise is a journal that welcomes papers which contribute to psychoanalytic
education. Education is considered in a broad sense, dealing not only with specific psychoanalytic
knowledge but with different cultural contributions which sustain the reflection on man in the
contemporary world. Thus its editorial approach considers different theoretical and technical
conceptions in psychoanalysis, as well as the possibility of dialoguing with other fields in the
science of man.
II - Submission of the manuscript
The article must be limited to 8000 words. The preferred method of submission is via electronic
mail [email protected], with your paper as an attachment, preferably in Word
format (*.doc).
When sent by postal service a CD copy must by edited in Word format (*.doc) to the following
address:
Jornal de Psicanálise
Instituto de Psicanálise da Sociedade Brasileira de Psicanálise de São Paulo
Av. Dr. Cardoso de Melo, 1450, 9º andar

III - Preparation of the manuscript
The Jornal de Psicanálise relies on rules established by the American Psychological Association
(APA) 1 in regard to the bibliographical references and citations.
The manuscript should be presented in the following sequence:
1 - An identified title page with:
- Title in Portuguese, Spanish and English;
- Full name and institutional affiliation of each author;
- Footnote with complete address for correspondence, including ZIP code, telephone and e-mail of
each author;
- Footnote conveying information about: institutional support, acknowledgements, original source
(presentation in events, academic dissertation or thesis) or information concerning ethical issues.
2 - Non-identified title page with:
Title in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
3 - Summary and keywords:
1
1 American Psychological Association (2001). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.).
Washington, DC: Author.
The summary and keywords must be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish, after the
bibliographic references. The summary must contain approximately 150 words and a maximum of
five keywords is recommended.
4 - Text
4.1 - References in the text
4.1.1 - Reference of authors in the text
References in the text are given by citing the author’s surname followed by the year of the first
publication in round brackets. If two co-authors are cited in the text, both names should be cited,
linked by an “e” in case the text is written in Portuguese, by a “y” in case the text is written in
Spanish, while in English the surnames should be linked by the word “and” or by the symbol &
when authors are quoted in round brackets, e.g., Pessanha and Forones (2003) or (Pessanha &
Forones, 2003).
If three to five authors are cited, all authors’s names should be cited the first time they appear in the
text, while in subsequent references only the first author’s name is required, followed by “et al”. For
example,
First citation:
Azevedo, Menezes e Meyer (1999) or (Azevedo, Menezes & Meyer, 1999).
Subsequent citations:
Azevedo et al. (2005) or (Azevedo et al., 2005).
In the list of references at the end of the paper all authors must be cited.
If six or more authors are cited, the surname of the first author followed “et al.” must be used, e.g.,
Bicudo et al. (1967) or (Bicudo et al., 1967).
In the list of references at the end of the paper, the surname and initials of the first six authors
should be cited, while in case of subsequent authors the “et al.” expression should be used. E.g.:
Bicudo, V. L., Marcondes, D., Uchôa, D. de M., Gill, M. J, Melsohn, I., Paiva, L. M. de et al.
(1967). Édipo Rei: comentários sobre a peça Édipo Rei. Revista Brasileira de Psicanálise, 1(2),
218-239.
When various authors are cited for the same idea, the alphabetical order must be observed according
to the surnames. E.g., Badaines (1976), Biller (1968, 1969) or (Badaines, 1976; Biller, 1968, 1969).
When there are citations of authors with the same surname, the initials of their prenames, should be
indicated. E.g., M. M. Oliveira (1983) e V. M. Oliveira (1984) or (M. M. Oliveira, 1983; V. M.
Oliveira, 1984).
Documents by the same author with different dates of publication must include the surname of the
author and the years of publication should be chronologically pointed out. E.g., Merleau-Ponty
(1942, 1960, 1966) or (Merleau-Ponty, 1942, 1960, 1966).
To identify texts by the same author and the same year of publication a small letter after the year of
publication should be used. E.g., Rogers (1973a, 1973b, 1973c) or (Rogers, 1973a, 1973b, 1973c).
Documents in which the author is an institution must be indicated by the full name of the institution
and acronyms should be avoided. E.g., American Psychological Association (2001) or (American
Psychological Association, 2001).
4.1.2 - Citations of informal sources such as classes, conferences, personal communications,
electronic addresses etc.
Include the information in round brackets after the citation. E.g., (Verbal information, September
19, 2003).
4.1.3 - Bibliographical references from original or republished editions
The date of the original publication should be mentioned followed by the consulted edition. E.g.
Freud (1898/1976) or (Freud, 1898/1976).
4.1.4 - Textual excerpts
Literal excerpts from a text, should be indicated by inverted commas followed by the surname of
the author, date of the publication and page number. When the quotation has forty words or more, it
must be presented in a separate paragraph in small print, with no inverted commas and with a left
margin of five spaces and no right margin. The excerpt must be written in small print.
In a testimonial citation or in an interview transcription, the speech should be presented in italics
and the text should be presented following the orientation above.
4.1.5 - Indirect citations
Citations in which the ideas appertain to other sources, the expression “as cited in” should be used.
E.g. According to Matos (1990) as cited in Bill (1998) or According to Matos (1990, as cited in
Bill, 1998).
In the references at the end of the paper, list only the consulted text, for instance, (Bill, 1998).
4.1.6 - Citations in press
The surnames of the author should be mentioned followed by no prelo. E.g., (Magdaleno Jr., no
prelo) or Magdaleno Jr. (no prelo).
When the text is written in English, use the expression in press.
4.1.7 - Citation of an electronic source
Citation from an electronic source should preferably be indicated in parentheses immediately after
the information. E.g. (www.bvs-psi.org.br).
Electronic addresses are not required in the final references.
4.1.8 - Punctuation and orthography in the cited text
In a cited text, the spelling and punctuation must be identical as used by the author in the consulted
document.
4.2 - Footnotes
Footnotes should be kept to a minimum, however, when necessary they are numbered
consecutively, immediately after the sentence they refer to. They must be on the same page as the
excerpt. The authors mentioned in the citation should be listed in the bibliographical references at
the end of the paper, not in the footnote.
4.3 - Bibliographical references
Bibliographical references must be listed by the surname of each author in alphabetical order, with
the title References.
If more than one work by the same author is cited, the references must be displayed in
chronological order according to the date of publication.
Bibliographical description
Author
The author or authors are listed by surname in small letters, followed by abbreviated capital initials.
Title
Titles and subtitles must be separated by a colon.
Place of publication
The city of publication should be given as displayed on the document, followed by the initial letters
of the state.
Internationally recognized cities do not require their original state or country. E.g. Paris, New York,
Chicago.
In case of Brazilian cities only those that are not the state’s capital are followed by the state’s
initials.
E.g. Petrópolis, RJ; Campinas, SP; São Paulo; Porto Alegre; Rio de Janeiro.
When the place is not identified, use the expression [s.l.].
Publisher
Publishers must be cited as shown on the document with abbreviated initials. Omit the words that
designate the commercial nature of the publishing house. When the publisher is not identified, use
the expression [s.n.].

IV - Procedures of the Editorial Board, the Editorial Consultants and Board of Guardians
The texts should be forwarded to the Editorial Board of the journal according to the guidelines
described above. The original texts will be submitted to the Editorial Board and/or to the
consultants ad hoc. The author’s identity and institutional affiliations will be kept anonymous for
the consultants. The authors will not have information of the identity of the consultants.
After analysis of the manuscript, the consultants utter their judgements: approved, approved with
recommendations and/or suggestions for revisions or refused for publication. The Jornal de
Psicanálise counts on qualified consultants who are expected to give constructive judgments about
the authors’ papers. Copies of the consultants judgements are forwarded to the authors.
Nevertheless the Editorial Board is responsible for the final decision referring to the acceptance or
not of the manuscript for publication.
V - Copyrights
Copyrights of all published articles belong to the Jornal de Psicanálise. The complete reproduction
of the articles in other publications require a written authorization from the Editorial Board of the
journal.
VI - Electronic publication
The Jornal de Psicanálise is available to readers in the traditional graphic form and in electronic
versions, hosted at several data based references in the field. Hence the accepted manuscripts will
be automatically edited in full in both versions - graphically and electronically.
The Editorial Board of the journal also maintains the right to determine which data bases will
receive the electronic copy of the journal.
