GOA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF PORTUGUESE M.A. IN PORTUGUESE LITERATURE AND CULTURE PRO 110 - HISTORY OF PORTUGAL 2010-2012 Course Title HISTORY OF PORTUGAL CourseDuration Objectives Semester I At the end of this course students will have gained knowledge of: cultural contributions to Portuguese society along the centuries; different periods of the History of Portugal; the evolution and characteristics of Portuguese society . In addition they will have gained experience in: reading, understanding and discussing texts or essays related to the evolution of Portuguese society and its history; identifying the most important characteristic aspects of Portuguese society and its importance in the world. Teaching & Learning Methods Number of contact teaching hours/credits Lectures 60 hours; 4 hours per week; 15 weeks / 4 credits Method(s) and Timing of Assessment . Internal Assessment performance: 4 best of 5 Assessments/tests conducted on Saturday at the end of every 3 weeks of classes (12 hours teaching hours contact)– 50 marks Semester-End Exam: 2 hour written examination. The written examination will consist of two topics out of four. – 50 marks Syllabus - Acquisition of basic concepts related to the History of Portugal: - Introduction to the Portuguese society and environment in its relation to the Portuguese territory and Europe; - The early epoch: the origins and development of Portugal (12th. to 14th. century)- module 1 (10 hrs) - The Revolution of 1383-1385 and its importance; the Dynasty D´Avis – module 2 (8 hrs) - The Portuguese overseas expansion and the Renaissance period – module 3 (10 hrs) - Apogee and Decline of the Portuguese Three-dimensional Empire – module 4 (8 hrs) - Absolutism and Enlightened Despotism; the Constitutional Monarchy and the Republican Revolution (1910) – module 5 (8 hrs) - The Estado Novo and dictatorship during 20th. Century – module 6 (8 hrs) - The Revolution of April 1974 and the end of the Portuguese Empire; Portugal and the European Union – module 7 (8 hrs) Work Requirements - Research and reading of essays about different issues concerning the History of Portugal.
