Such philosophy and global strategy are reinforced by the SVR program (Service, Value and Responsibility), which reflects the commitment of the company with sustainable development, health, safety and the environment. Managing water resources, focusing on the reduction and rational use of this resource is the first step in this process. The experience and competence of Veolia, the most up-to-date technologies in water treatment, and the excellence in service are shared with all customers worldwide. The installation and maintenance of the labs that ensure the efficacy and quality of Veolia applications, as well as the activities that try to reinforce and value its human capital include initiatives that go beyond the workplace, always trying to educate its employees and their family on good environmental practices. Such commitment is recognized by the market, which has been demanding from its partners, besides excellent products and services, a responsible behavior. An evidence of this is the numberless contracts that the company closed until today with different industries – oil and gas, chemical, energy, paper and pulp, mining, basic sanitation, heavy industry, etc – besides sponsoring initiatives that aim at environmental consciousness, like the Rally dos Sertões. In this event, Veolia offered a device for demineralizing water. With a similar commitment and enthusiasm, I invite all of you to prepare ourselves for the new challenges ahead of us. Greetings and enjoy your reading, Giangiacomo Gallizioli General Manager 2 Training Training in the innovation center The Process Engineer of the Solutions Division of Veolia Water Brasil, Márcia Higa, was trained in the headquarters of Biothane in Delft, Netherlands, between October 11 and 13. A company of the Veolia Group, Biothane is a world reference in anaerobic treatment of industrial effluents. The city of Delft is the birthplace of the continuous innovation of Biothane: the technologies Biothane® UASB e Biobed® EGSB were created there. In the same facility, the company maintains a test laboratory, in partnership with various universities and companies focusing on research and development. The principle behind the anaerobic treatment is the use of anaerobic bacteria (biomass) in order to degrade the organic pollutants or COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), in the absence of oxygen, in simpler products like carbonic gas and methane. The latter has been used as an alternative source of energy. The main advantages of the anaerobic treatment of industrial effluents are: lower consumption of energy and chemical products, smaller area needed for the reactor and a lesser generation of sludge (to be treated later on), besides the production of biogas, which may be used as a source of energy. There are some opportunities to use these technologies in Brazil. After this training, it became much easier to explain to our customers what are the parameters and the possible application of these solutions, as well as to search the needed information so that we may offer a better sizing for the systems offered by the company”, explains Márcia. Sustainability Children’s day – educating through play Showing that we care for the planet is a Veolia Water Brasil’s philosophy that goes beyond the workplace of the company, influencing employees and their families through initiatives that reinforce this commitment. This was the theme of the celebration of the Children’s Day promoted by Veolia Water Brasil on the 1st of October when it gathered employees and their children in the Little Eco House, in the neighborhood of Pinheiros in São Paulo (SP), the first facility for children’s events in which the practices of sustainability are taken seriously: the physical space, as well as the toys and all related activities, reinforce the environmental education of the children. A playful and self-sustainable facility, surfing the “go green” wave, in Little Eco House all of the toys – built from reforested wood and recycled plastic – are inspired in the works and sketches of the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. All activities are supported by a circus school, which, in turn, uses the facility for its rehearsals. The children were encouraged to participate in the recycling workshops and at the end of the event they received ecological kits. Cynthia Rubio, a commercial/technical analyst of Veolia Water Brasil SDI in Cotia (SP), took two of her nephews, 11 and 9, to the event. She said that the children considered the activities very interesting, dynamic and playful. “I am a new employee of Veolia who had joined the company six months ago, but have always heard about the company’s concern with the environment,” she added. “My nephews were thrilled with the activities. At the end, they received a little vase with pau-brasil seeds, which were planted the next day. Everyday they ask if the tree is growing,” she said. “I am sure this afternoon will always be in the kids memories.” 3 Did you know? SVR is a new common language for our company In the beginning of the year, Veolia consolidated its philosophy and global strategy in the SVR program (Service, Value and Responsibility), a concept that encompasses, together with the directions for products and services, the commitment of the company with sustainable development, health, safety and the environment. “With SVR, Veolia reinforces its commitment to offer the most up-to-date and efficient complete solutions for water and effluent treatment – which represents, for example, low chemical and energy consumption that represent reduced facilities costs and lower ecological footprint,” explains the Marketing and Communications Manager of Veolia Water Brasil, Béatrice de Toledo Dupuy. “With SVR everybody wins: the company, its employees, our customers and the planet.” SERVICE VALUE RESPONSIBILITY As a global reference in the supply of water treatment systems, we ensure our customers access to our experience and competence through world famous technologies. As soon as the physical structure is ready, the unit may be fully operational in the beginning of 2012. The lab will have many uses, both supporting operating contracts and mobile units, and in the analysis of water and effluents, testing effluents treatability (pilot plant ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis). It will also be responsible for the quality control of the SDI (Integral Deionization Service) of the unit in Cotia. It will also offer laboratorial services for the autopsies of reverse osmosis membranes by determining organic and inorganic precipitations and basic sediments and water analysis (BSW) to assess the level of oil, water and solids in oily sludge samples. The BSW analysis is important for the job of recovering oily sludge, something we are just starting to offer to the petrochemical industry Francisco Faus “With the membrane autopsies we will be able to better suggest the adequacy of pre-treatment, as well as indicate the best chemical products,” explains Francisco Faus, Director of the Solutions Division of Veolia Water Brasil. “All of these service procedures are in accordance with the ones executed by the research center of Veolia France, where our technicians were trained.” The BSW analysis, on the other hand, is important for the service of recovering oily sludge, something we are just starting to offer to the petrochemical industry,” explains Faus. The lab will also serve as a showroom for the Veolia water purifiers (trademarked Elga), which will be on display in site. “We will also test the Elga equipment before we send them to the customers,” adds the executive, thus concluding: “The new lab will be in synch with our SVR strategy to offer Service, Value and Responsibility to the market.” Contracts REDUC In May, Veolia Water Brasil and Enfil association began the production of water using the Ultrafiltration System at the Refinaria Duque de Caxias (Reduc), in Rio de Janeiro, a project that is part of the National Plan for the Advancement of Gas Production (Plangas, in Portuguese). Reduc “The system has the capacity to filter 450 m³ of water per hour, and the goal is to eliminate the impurities in the water collected from the river Guandu and from the Saracuruna Dam,” says Ricardo Schiavone, Veolia Water Brasil manager of Contracts. The treated water will be used to feed the demineralization system. SUZANO will have water treatment stations from Veolia Veolia Water Brasil will install two water treatment stations in the Suzano manufacturing plant of Imperatriz (MA), which will have the capacity to produce 1.5 million tons/year of pulp. The forecasted start of the industrial operations of the plant is the end of 2013. The water treatment station (WTS) will have a total output of 7,000 m³/h, will use the Multiflo technology and gravity sand filters, which allow high filtering indicators. The boiler water treatment station (BWTS) will have a total output of 575 m³/h and an additional capacity for condensate polishing of 840 m³/h. “These water treatment stations, using the most up-do-date technologies, are indispensable to the good performance of the pulp plants because they ensure water supply in the volume and quality needed”, observes the Veolia Water Brasil paper and pulp business development manager, Rubens Perez. 5 Quality and Safety SIPAT – safety, quality of life and work taken seriously Veolia Water Brasil promoted, between August 8 and 12, the first Internal Week of Work Related Prevention (Sipat in Portuguese). The company promoted lectures, train- According to local labor laws, it is mandatory to have such Sipats all over the country, once a year. Safe behavior, ergonomics and health, Alcohol/Tobacco/ Aids and STD, Environment and Motivation were the main themes creatively covered by the event. “The importance for the company, however, goes far beyond the legal requirement because the Sipat allows the creation of a watchful attitude aiming at identifying and correcting bad conditions and practices in the workplace environment”, considers Fernanda Vollet. “As this was the first edition of this event in the company, we decided to present the chosen subjects through play sketches, 20 minute long,” explains Veolia Water Brasil project engineer Fernanda Vollet. “The characters of these plays dealt with our daily-life issues/problems in a fun way, alerting to the risks and consequences of our actions.” “Besides promoting an integration among employees, the Sipat helps us reinforce consciousness in subjects that reflect directly in the health and safety of everybody. It is an opportunity to think over our acts, both inside and outside the company”, she adds. “Safety should be everyone’s goal.” ings, medical evaluations and playful activities for all employees, aiming at reinforcing consciousness related to Quality, Safety, Environment, Health and Social Responsibility. VEOLIATIVA: keeping an eye on quality of life Desde o início de 2011 a Since the beginning of 2011, Veolia Water Brasil has been investing in a work-related quality of life program for its employees: VeoliAtiva. It In September we started the labor workout program, a focused and supervised practice of daily short-term exercises and integration dynamics based on the study of ergonomics in their professional workplace. It takes place three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), 15 minutes a day, in various shifts. Implemented in February, after a consciousness step, the program performed individual physical evaluation of 165 employees of Veolia Water Brasil (São Paulo and Cotia). Physical goals were set up according to each one’s general health condition, expectations and the corporate goal of quality of life. In April, during the program’s third phase, we organized running groups, walks and the implementation of labor workout. “I stay seated for a long time. After I begun to do the labor workout, I have been feeling more willing and relaxed”, says Magali, emphasizing that the whole company joined the activity. “I moved out of my sedentary life thanks to Veolia.” encourages changes in habits, focusing on results set up as corporate physical goals. The running groups take place every Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Ibirapuera Park, between 7 and 8 PM, with the support of two instructors from the Ritmo Vital sports training company. “It is important for all to participate three times a week in order to gain momentum”, says Magali Rodrigues, Veolia Water Brasil receptionist. The employee builds self-esteem, value and motivation. Grazzielle Fredericci The sports activities have been helping improve the workplace environment. “The employee builds self-esteem, value and motivation. There is more integration within the company, more productivity and less absenteeism,” says Grazzielle Fredericci, Communication analyst at Veolia Water Brasil. Eliana Faria, Veolia Water Brasil Control and Operations manager celebrates the results. “VeoliAtiva is working as a soft push for many people to have a healthier life. I was totally accommodated with my health and physical condition, and with the program I came back to action. Besides the training in the Park, I also practice other sports, and the best is that I am really liking it now,” she says. “Companies are more open to quality of life programs,” ponders Vanessa Guirau, from Ritmo Vital. Besides individual results, there are also corporate goals, building cooperation among employees in order to reach the overall goal. “Caring for healthy employees is a business strategy for high corporate performance,” concludes Vanessa Guirau. 6 Our presence Photography book about water A bilingual edition with 200 pages and more than 130 photos taken throughout 20 years of traveling to 18 countries, the book Water – Conservation and Culture, by photographer and geologist Adriano Garambini, and sustainability expert journalist Laís Duarte, editor of Cultura Sub, had a full sponsor by Veolia Water Brasil using the tax exemption program Lei Rouanet IR Cultura. The work is about the history of water, its relation to mankind and nature, as well as its importance for the maintenance of life. “Water is an imperative supply to living beings and companies, essential for the creation and maintenance of life. The book is an additional alert, bearing in mind that water is a good that is not an everlasting resource”, says Giangiacomo Gallizioli, General Manager of Veolia Water Brasil. “Fully committed to the environment as the core of its activities, Veolia Water Brasil always welcomes any initiative that results in a reflection on the importance of water in our lives and that brings a contribution so we can make more people aware of the issue of its management and reuse”, he emphasized. Some models displayed panels with photos from the book at seaside and downtown Rio de Janeiro and at the Ibirapuera Park and Monumento das Bandeiras in São Paulo. The authors participated in book signings in Rio (11/17) and in São Paulo (11/24). Adriano Gambarini is a specialist in nature photographs and last year he was among the finalists of Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year, one of the most prestigious international prizes in photography, co-sponsored by the London Natural History Museum and the BBC Wildlife magazine, aiming at promoting the awareness of society about the value and respect for nature. The photographer is participating again in this year’s edition. The winners will be known soon. Veolia Foundation donates 10 thousand euros for Aldeias Infantis The non-government organization Aldeias Infantis SOS Brasil received 10 thousand euros from Fondation Veolia Environnemént for the reconstruction of homes that are part of the project of this international institution affiliated to UNESCO and present in 132 countries. Already present in 10 Brazilian states and the Federal District of Brasília, it cares for 10 thousand kids, teens and youngsters in Brazil. The donation check was handed to the Communication and Fundraising director, Filipe Páscoa, on November 17, in an event that took place in their Jacarepaguá unit in Rio de Janeiro. Bruno Tiago, a soccer player from the team of Botafogo attended the ceremony. “The original thing about Aldeias Infantis, created in 1967 with the mission to promote defense actions and guarantee children and teenage rights, is that it goes beyond looking for a shelter. It integrates, whenever possible, the kid to a family,” observes Veolia Water Brasil Marketing and Communication Manager Béatrice de Toledo Dupuy. “It is a special project indeed.” The resources will be used to improve the physical structure and the pedagogical organization of the Program for Family Strengthening of Aldeias Infantis of Jacarepaguá. “We hope this donation will be the mark of a long-lasting relationship benefiting kids, young teenagers and families that participate in our programs,” concluded Patrícia Diniz, Corporate Relationship manager of the NGO. Veolia Water Brasil is Brand Champion In November, the department of Marketing and Communication of Veolia Water Brasil received from Veolia Environnement the Brand Champion certificate of excellence, a global recognition of achieved results. The Marketing and Communication manager of Veolia Water Brasil attributes this victory to the good efforts of her team. “This recognition is the result of the alignment of our actions to the developed planning,” she says. Among the outstanding results this last year are the support to the Brand Book Veolia – an internal use tool designed, essentially, to grant a consistent communication of the Veoila brand worldwide – and the elaboration of case studies, among which are the advertising and promotion of the mobile treatment units, the new technologies for the cleaning of oily water, the action of the Veolia Foundation to bring water to the outback community and the VeoliAtiva program. 7 Veolia Water Brasil takes an employee to the Rally dos Sertões Challenge, overcoming and environmental responsibility are the results of the partnership between man and machine Eduardo Borges Besides sponsoring the Valtra Dakar Eco Team, lead by pilot Klever Kolberg, in the Rally International dos Sertões, Veolia Water Brasil also promoted a competition to select an employee to personally know the team and the car that participated in the 19th edition of this tournament. “Challenge, overcoming and environmental responsibility are the results of the partnership between man and machine” was the winning motto by Eduardo Borges, supervisor of the Fiscal Department of Veolia Water Brasil, who declared he had lived a unique experience. “I always enjoyed adventure: I am a motorbiker and I like to tour traveling around. I really appre- ciated Veolia’s initiative of sponsoring a team like this besides granting the opportunity for an employee to have a direct contact with this kind of competition,” said the supervisor who took a ride in the vehicle piloted by Kolberg. “I feel a mix of emotion and pride in representing my colleagues and to work in a company with such endeavors.” Veolia also made available a water demineralizing device to be used by the competitors, who are pilots from all over the world. The rally map covers more than four thousand kilometers of paved and unpaved roads, crossing little towns and some state capitals like Goiânia (GO) and Fortaleza (CE). The device is used to remove salts from the water utilized in the making of the fluids used in the radiators. AN EXAMPLE OF COMMITMENT Rally dos Sertões has already won two international awards, the 2009 Environmental Awards, bestowed by the International Federation of Motorcycling (IFM) to the most distinguished programs of awareness and preservation of the environment linked to motor sports worldwide; and in 2007, a similar award granted by the Latin-American Motorcycling Union (LMU), affiliated to the IFM. “The fact that this is a sustainable tournament motivated Veolia’s sponsoring,” affirms Giagiacomo Gallizioli, general manager of Veolia Water Brasil. “Kleber was the first to use renewable fuel in the Rally Dakar. Last year, he took the lead once again as the champion of clean energy when he won the first edition of the competition for the Ethanol category.” Celebration and sports reinforce integration The annual celebration of the employees of Veolia Water Brasil took place on November 5 at the Centro de Eventos Aldeia da Serra. Children and adults had a lot of fun enjoying activities like the ball pool, soap soccer, mechanical bull, face painting, balloon sculptures, t-shirt painting and children’s hair design. The grand final of the First Internal Futsal Tournament 2011 – “Integrating is our sport” was one of the top attractions of the party. The Actiflo Soccer Team won the game, seconded by the Guangue do Pen Drive. Robson França was the one who scored the most during the competition, with seven goals; Marcelo Santos won the recognition as the best player and Celso Heidtmann as the best goalie. In a moment of humor, Davi de Sousa and Wellington Silva won, respectively, the prizes of worst goalie (mão de pau) and worst player (bola murcha). The mini tournament that began on October 20 at Colégio Assunção was organized by Ritmovital, a sports event company. For Marcelo Santos, purchasing assistant, the annual celebration was an opportunity to put together managers and their direct reports. “It was great to have the grand final during the annual celebration, as our relatives, spouses, significant others and friends were cheering for their favorite teams. The winner team had a day of glory, with a trophy and an official recognition in the party, besides being greeted and celebrated by all for their victory,” said Marcelo, one of the outstanding players of the futsal tournament. 8 Fairs FENASAN Veolia Water Brasil participated in the 22nd edition of Fenasan (Portuguese initials for National Fair of Sanitation and Environment), the most distinguished event of the industry in Latin America, which took place in São Paulo. Among the technologies of the portfolio of water, effluents and reuse treatment, the company highlighted the high index physical-chemical processes Actiflo and Multiflo. In Brazil, Actiflo is used in water treatment plants in Ponta Grossa (PR) and in Petrobras refineries, which also use effluent reuse systems. Multiflo, on the other hand, is used in the water treatment of the paper mill of Group Votorantim (VCP) in Três Lagoas (MS). FITABES As soluções da Veolia Water Brasil solutions were also displayed at the IX International Fair of Technologies for Environmental Sanitation (FITABES), the most important event of environmental sanitation in Latin America, which took place in Porto Alegre (RS). The highlights were the proprietary systems Actiflo, Multiflo and MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor), celebrated worldwide as solutions with the least environmental impact and with a reduced area occupied by the water and sewage treatment systems. Veolia Water Brasil wants to bring to Brazil the innovations recently adopted by the public sector worldwide, aiming at reducing the occupied area and the efficient use of the technological resources. “We believe that the Brazilian companies will demand advanced technologies. In the manufacturing sector, the use of these solutions is already widespread and the public sector will have to catch up”, concluded Adriano Longo, Business Director of Veolia Water Brasil for Latin America. ABTCP In October, the company participated in the 44th Paper and Pulp International Expo and Congress, between October 3 and 5 at the Transamerica Expo Center in São Paulo. Organized by the Brazilian Technical Association of Paper and Pulp, the event was visited by more than 12 thousand people – out of which more than 60% are the key, or influence the key decision makers of their companies.
