Capela recusou o ocaso e manteve-se investigador até
agora, octogenário. Notáveis estes seus dois recentes livros: “Conde de Ferreira e Cª. Traficantes de Escravos ”
(Afrontamento, 2012) e “Delfim José de Oliveira, Diário
da Viagem da Colónia Militar de Lisboa a Tete, 18591860 ” (Húmus, 2014), uma narrativa cuja publicação
prefaciou, anotou e organizou. Sei que entretanto reescrevia outro dos seus fundamentais livros, enriquecido
por mais documentação pesquisada e novas reflexões. E
que outros textos trabalhava, incessantemente.
O primeiro dos livros que aqui refiro, “Conde de Ferreira e Cª. Traficantes de Escravos ”, é uma inestimável
contribuição para a análise, desvendadora, da profunda influência do comércio entre Portugal e o actual
Moçambique em XIX nas modalidades de organização
política e económica portuguesa, em particular para a
sedimentação do regime liberal e suas burguesias metropolitanas, obra portanto em sequência óbvia com as
preocupações que o autor sempre erigiu na sua análise.

O segundo livro agora mesmo publicado, a organização da
publicação do relato de Delfim José de Oliveira “Diário da
Viagem da Colónia Militar de Lisboa a Tete, 1859-1860 ”,
é mais uma das múltiplas achegas que Capela disseminou
para um maior conhecimento da sociedade zambeziana.
Algo potenciado pelo facto do autor sempre se ter recusado
a ser apenas um historiador de sínteses, sempre ter valorizado a disponibilização de materiais historiográficos em
primeira mão, como este, de molde a ilustrar as perspectivas assumidas e, também, potenciar as reflexões alheias.

José Soares Martins, cuja obra de historiador sempre
ocorreu sob o pseudónimo José Capela, faleceu no passado domingo (13.9.2014) com 82 anos. Forma-mor
de o celebrar é lê-lo, mergulhar na sua importante obra
dedicada às relações entre a sociedade portuguesa e as
sociedades do actual Moçambique, em particular no
século XIX, cuja profunda imbrincação foi desvendando através da sua abordagem pioneira ao longo de quatro décadas de publicações.

Para essa ocasião, pretende-se agregar diversas propostas de cooperação para a organização de GTs.
Seminário Internacional de História da África:
Fontes e arquivos sobre missões africanas”, Universidade de Pernambuco, Petrolina, Brasil
Este evento faz parte de um conjunto de ações planejadas
pelos proponentes que se enumeram a seguir: Grupo de Investigação “Missões, histórias, e identidades entre África e
Portugal”, a Univ. Federal de São Paulo, o Grupo de Mediação e Alteridade do CEBRAP, a Universidade Estadual Paulista e a Queens University ( Belfast- Irlanda). O objetivo é
privilegiar a análise dos processos de constituição de identidades religiosas e de reorganizações de hierarquias de terras
e populações, a partir do contato e da inserção das diversas
sociedades africanas, nas experiências da globalidade das
ações missionárias no continente, dos séc. XVII ao XXI.
Trata-se de um encontro preparatório para a segunda edição
do “Colóquio Internacional - Da evangelização da África à
África evangelizadora: Mediações missionárias em África e
a partir de África”, evento ocorrido pela primeira vez na
cidade do Porto, em 2013, e que terá sua 2.ª edição na Universidade de Pernambuco – Campus Petrolina, em 2015.

Conference “African Thoughts on (Neo-) Colonial Worlds: Steps towards an Intellectual History of Africa”, University of Vienna, Austria
It is time to challenge this state of affairs, for African
thinkers of the twentieth century have had a lot to say
about the nature and causes of global inequality – and
they still do. Contributions shall approach their topics
from one of the two perspectives described below. The
conference shall lead to a comparative view on their differing analysis of colonial and neo-colonial world orders.
“African Thoughts on (Neo-) Colonial Worlds: Steps
towards an Intellectual History of Africa” brings together several interrelated domains rarely associated
with our neighboring continent, mainly the history
of its ideas and its thinkers. Asking for Africa’s role
in shaping the world of the twentieth century and its
world view, the conference connects the global historical questioning of colonialism and imperialism with
the interests of intellectual history.

Intellectual history is a field still primarily connected
with Western thought. During the last two decades
there was a move towards a more globally informed kind
of perspective which had some successes (extending its
focus to include Asian thinkers), but Africa is still rarely
treated in those debates and African thinkers tend to be
marginalized or ignored in their originality.

O tema do XII CONLAB, o primeiro a realizar-se após
a criação, em Salvador da Bahia, da AICSHLP - Associação Internacional de Ciências Sociais e Humanas
em Língua Portuguesa (associação científica de apoio,
promoção e desenvolvimento das ciências sociais e humanas em língua portuguesa), sob o tema “Imaginar e
Repensar o Social: Desafios às Ciências Sociais e Humanas nos Espaços de Língua Portuguesa, 25 anos depois”
propõe ser um catalisador de uma reflexão que recupere
a trajetória dos onze congressos realizados, apontando
os ganhos que as ciências sociais e humanas dos Sete
tiveram e as pontes construídas para a sua consolidação
enquanto áreas de saber e a busca de um maior protagonismo no espaço global da produção de conhecimento.
Os Congressos Luso-Afro-Brasileiros têm sido, desde
a sua 1.ª edição em 1990, um dos mais importantes
encontros de cientistas sociais e das humanidades dos
países de língua oficial portuguesa. Mas também um
espaço pluri e transdisciplinar, reagrupando intelectuais de todas as disciplinas das ciências sociais e das
humanidades, num esforço de promoção da reflexão
e partilha de produção científica, almejando simultaneamente a criação, consolidação e internacionalização da produção científica em língua portuguesa.

International Seminar “Culture, Politics
and Labor in Southern Africa”, Unicamp,

Scholars have long ago pointed out that Africa is not a
homogenous continent. Even so, references to the “History of Africa” continue, often drawing upon a selective
highlighting of colonial policies and experiences that
effectively separates Africa into English, Portuguese,
French, German (etc.) spheres of colonization. “Culture, Politics and Labor in Southern Africa” is an international seminar that proposes a shift in this approach.
This international seminar also seeks to deepen the academic ties between the Department of History/Harriet Tubman Institute at York University and the Centro de Pesquisa em História Social da Cultura of the
Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP).
Last, but not least, this international seminar further provides an opportunity to discuss the conditions of the production of research in Brazil related to Southern Africa.
As such, we are also interested in presentations that focus
on sources available for research and/or concentrate on
methodological questions that enable us to use them.
On the one hand, it seeks to emphasize the perspectives of Africans - not just an “African perspective,” but
the points of view of peoples who saw, dealt with and
resisted the presence of Europeans (including during
the periods that the established historiography calls pre
or post colonial). As a result, it proposes on the other
hand an analysis of Southern Africa: an extensive area
in which Bantu peoples predominated (and still do).

various sites in South Africa. The
author reveals how the dynamics
generated by fast-track potentially

religious sites, structures and spaces in the Islamic world.
The findings challenge existing
expert notions and opinions about
women’s rural land use, livelihoods, and rural development.
Sacred Precincts explores urban
context; issues of identity; design;
construction; transformation and
the history of sacred sites and architecture in Europe, the Middle
East and Africa from the advent of
Islam to the 20th century.
Where others have concentrated
on the commercial activities of
these migrants, casting them as archetypal middlemen, this work reconstructs not just their economic
strategies, but also their social and
political lives.
Moreover, it examines the fraught
responses of colonial Frenchmen
to the unsettling presence of these
interlopers of empire–responses
which, with their echoes of metropolitan racism, helped to shape the
ways in which Lebanese migrants
represented themselves and justified their place in West Africa.

masquerading tradition throughout
the twentieth century.
This article analyses the largescale popular urban uprisings
that shook Mozambican cities on
1 and 2 September 2010, following the government’s announcement of successive rises in the
price of public transport fares
and basic commodities.
This is the story of military aviation
in Rhodesia from the romantic days
of ‘bush’ flying in the 1920s and
‘30s-when aircraft were refueled
from jerrycans and landing grounds
were often the local golf course-to
the disbandment of the Rhodesian
Air Force (RhAF) on Zimbabwean
independence in 1980.
Based on field research spanning
seven years, this study shows how
mapiko has undergone continuous reinvention by visionary individuals, has diversified into genres
with broad generational appeal,
and has enacted historical events
and political engagements. This
dense history of creativity and
change has been sustained by a
culture of competition deeply ingrained within the logic of ritual
itself. The desire to outshine rivals
on the dance ground drives performers to search for the new, the
astonishing, and the topical.

Using ethnographic material from
the city of Chimoio and the capital Maputo, the following work
highlights the organisational character of the ‘strikes’ (greves), as the
popular uprisings were called, and
explores them as a new form of organising political discontent.
Comparing them to other historical and contemporary popular

the strikes violently and rhizomically generated ephemeral and

In 1939 the tiny Royal Rhodesian
Air Force (RRAF) became the first
to take up battle stations even before the outbreak of the Second
World War. The three Rhodesian
squadrons served with distinction
in East Africa, the Western Desert,
Italy and Western Europe. At home
Rhodesia became a vast training
ground for airmen from across the
Empire-from Britain, the Commonwealth and even Greece.
After the war, Rhodesia, on a negligible
budget, rebuilt its air force, equipping
it with Ansons, Spitfires, Vampires,
Canberras, Hunters and Alouettes.

As the Soviet Union teetered on
the edge of collapse during the late
1980s, and America prepared to
claim its victory, a bloody war still
raged in Southern Africa, where
proxy forces from both sides vied
for control of Angola. The result was
the largest battle on the dark continent since Al Alamein, with forces
from both sides paying in blood
what U.S.-Soviet diplomats were
otherwise spending in diplomacy.
Africa is said to be rising, turning
a definitive page in its history, heralding new and exciting possibilities for the continent.
Headed since independence by the
Movimento Popular de Libertação de
Angola (MPLA), the Angolan government has pursued domestic goals,
such as internal security and stability.
The socialist government of Angola and
its army, FAPLA, fully stocked with
Soviet weapons, had only to wipe out a
massive resistance group, UNITA, secretly supplied by the U.S, in order to
claim full sovereignty over the country.
A giant FAPLA offensive so threatened
to succeed in overcoming UNITA that
apartheid-era South Africa stepped in
to protect its own interests. The white
army crossing the border prompted
the Angolan government to call on
their own foreign reinforcements—the
army of Communist Cuba’s.

um estudo sobre este género musical nacional que abarca um período
de 70 anos da história recente de
Moçambique. A obra traça-nos o
percurso da marrabenta ao longo
deste período, com base numa análise conjuntural aonde os aspectos
políticos, culturais e económicos são
levados em consideração na tentativa
de explicar este fenómeno cultural.

It was after returning to Tanganyika that ‘Mwalimu’ (the teacher)
formally entered politics, and led

all too often the voices of African
traders are obscured amid a blizzard of statistical analysis.
