ALGA+® seaweeds are the solution for the food, cosmetic and feed customers seeking
a natural and healthy ingredient assured with quality, traceability, organic certification,
stability of supply and a small carbon-foot print that can help to differentiate their
products. Our customers benefit from continuous support that includes biomass
customisation, development of new seaweed-based products and the domestication of
new species of interest.
In order to boost the western seaweed market, we also work close to the final
consumer. Tok de Mar® (food) and SeaOriginals® (well-being) products are developed
in-house and in partnership with universities and ALGA+® customers.
After one year in the market, our products can be found all over Portugal and also in
France, UK, Poland, Switzerland and Australia. Food companies, speciality retailers
(natural, organic, gourmet and seafood) and restaurants are now our main customers.
ALGAplus high-quality seaweeds are mostly produced in land-based cultivation
systems, under the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) sustainable concept.
All production phases are currently carried out in-house: biomass production,

Altakitin produces and manufactures ultra-pure chitosan primarily for biomedical
application. The company offers fully customized synthesis of chitin, chitosan and
derivatives under ISO 13485 for a customer defined specification.
All products are characterized by validated methodologies to reliably determine
standard properties to ensure the specifications required by individual clients.
Chitosan is the N-deacetylated product of chitin, which is the second most abundant
natural polysaccharide (cellulose being the most abundant) widely occurring in the
exoskeletons of many crustaceans and in the cell walls of some fungi. Due to its
biocompatibility, biodegradability, and hydrogel properties, chitosan has been
increasingly reported in a number of biomedical applications. Chitosan also shows
fungicidal, bacteriostatic and antimicrobial activities. Chitosan has been shown to
facilitate wound healing, reduce serum cholesterol levels and stimulate the immune
system. Because of such properties, chitosan has become the material of choice for the
manufacture of many medical devices and implants already placed in the market.
Moreover Altakitin has specialized expertise in Design and Production of Biomaterials
of new products. Special focus has been given to the development of, biomaterials for
orthopaedic applications.
Altakitin portfolio has a variety of biomaterials which includes Synthetic Bone Grafts,
Bone Cements and Injectable Bone Substitutes for example, including chitosan has
a raw material.

The association aims to protect the interests of its associates, representing them in all
organisms and public or private entities. APA also contributes to the development of

BioMimetx is a newborn global biotech start-up focused on the development of
"green" antifouling solutions, to prevent marine biofouling, the natural mechanism of
adhesion of marine organisms to submerged structures.
BioMimetx discovered and owns environmental bacteria that secrete high levels of
molecules, which can be used as natural antimicrobials and algaecides. Currently these
molecules are being produced through an optimized lab-scale fermentation process,
ensuring high yield through a simple single step procedure. As the first product,

ESIP is one of the biggest and most successful seafood processing plants in Portugal.
Located in Peniche, in the Leiria district, ESIP is also one of the region’s biggest
employers.
Presently, 100% of ESIP’s production is exported to major European markets, the most
relevant being UK, France and Italy.
Most of ESIP’s seafood products are sold under strong and widely recognised brands

Necton, S.A. is a portuguese SME located in the Algarve.
Founded in 1997, the company developed is own technology for the production of
microalgae. Necton was the very first company in Europe, serving microalgae
concentrates for applications in aquaculture, the Phytobloom product range.
Beside this products, Necton is capable of producing more than 12 microalgae species
that sell to several clientes in the cosmetic, food, feed and biodiesel industries. Our
production systems are closed photobioreactor, allowing high quality standarts; the
products are avaiable in several formulations, such as liquid concentrate, frozen paste
and freeze dried powder.
Due to the big interest in the microalgae field during the past few years and not to lost
it focus in biomass production and product development, Necton spin-out a microalgae
technology company, A4F, SA, to deal with new potential applications, such as oil for
biodiesel and CO2 fixation; A4F develope into a very interesting company, presenting
today state-of-the-art technology.
Necton is in the present moment upgrading it production facilities, adding fermentation
capabilities to it operation.
At present moment, Necton is looking for business opportunities to present it products
to direct users, such as marine fish hatcheries, to industries that use microalgae in it
formulations, such as fish feed producers and to distributors in both aquaculture and

Oceano XXI – Association for the Knowledge and Economy of the Sea is a private
non-profit corporate body, created at 2009 by the initiative of two regional associations
IDCEM (Instituto para o Desenvolvimento do Conhecimento e Economia do Mar) and
AFM (Associação Fórum Mar Centro).
The Association has more than 60 members, from different sectors of activity of the
Sea Economy, between companies and business associations, R&D Centres, higher
education institutions, local authorities and other associative organizations.
Oceano XXI headquartered is at Leça da Palmeira, in the University of Porto Sea Pole
Complex.
The Portuguese Managing Authority of the Thematic Factors of Competitiveness
Operational Programme – COMPETE –, inserted in the National Strategic Reference
Framework, created in 2009 the so called Collective Efficiency Strategies (EEC).
These Stategies have encouraged cooperation and networking among companies and
between companies and other relevant actors in the strategy - educational and R&D
institutions, training, technical assistance, business associations, among others.

Sea4Us is a biotech start-up dedicated to discovery and development of novel
pharmaceuticals. It has expertise in neurobiology and marine biology and combines
these different areas of knowledge to create innovative treatments for several unmet
clinical needs.
Sea4Us has generated a library of unique compounds derived from marine organisms,
which are important sources of bioactive molecules. The company screens such
compounds against a number of molecular targets (ion channels) such as NaV, Kv and
CaV channels, which are involved in several pathologies.
Due to its nature, the Sea4Us Drug Discovery & Development Platform allows the
identification of novel pharmaceutical drugs for several unmet clinical needs. It can be
used to identify novel modulators for ion channels involved in different pathologies
such as epilepsy, diabetes, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension and skin diseases, among
others.
Its lead product is an analgesic for moderate to severe chronic pain types currently
without adequate treatment. After completion of its development it will be a major
breakthrough in chronic pain management since it will overcome the brain-derived
noxious side effects of current treatments.
