About Leadership Business Consulting 85 Welcome Note by Basílio Horta Welcome Note by the Promoters Portugal is amongst the world leaders in the adoption and development of new technologies. An example is the access to mobile broadband, counting with 3.8 million subscribers and having a mobile penetration far above the European Union average. Basílio Horta Chairman and CEO of AICEP Portugal Global Business Development Agency Furthermore, almost half of the Portuguese government's budget in 2010was spent in ICT related enhancements, namely in the areas of Education, Public Administration and Justice applications. More recently, according to the FTTH Council 2010, Portugal ranked as one of the three European countries that is leading the development and use of optic fiber home services. Carlos Miguel Oliveira Managing Partner Leadership Business Consulting Around 250 million people in the world speak Portuguese as their first language, being the sixth most spoken language in the world. As such, this event provides a great opportunity for bilateral business opportunities in a considerable huge market, as it offers direct contact with centers of excellence in the United States of America. 4 The bilateral relationship between Portugal and the USA has been significantly improved. Evidence of these new relationships are partnerships established between the Portuguese Government and the University of Texas-Austin, Harvard Medical School, MIT and Carnegie Mellon University. Furthermore, the positioning of EDP Renewable, the 3rd largest producer of wind energy worldwide, proves the high potential still to be developed. Furthermore, on the 8th of March, AICEP and the new Portuguese Ambassador in Washington, Nuno Brito, launched a new campaign called "Portugal, Innovate with us". The aim of this campaign is to give visibility to Portuguese companies through concrete initiatives and provide contacts to them in the North American market. We will be present at the Detroit Car Show in April to introduce MOBI.E a leading electric vehicle smart grid concept that has been implemented in Portugal, will participate in Wind Energy events in Washington and California in May, and promote Portuguese LifeSciences achievements in New Jersey and Washington in June, among others. We would like to highlight centers of excellence in Portugal, such as the ones developed by Cisco, IBM and Microsoft. These companies established in Portugal nearshoring Outsourcing activities in-charge of European and in some cases World operations. I believe that 2011 will be a remarkable year in the strengthening of the bilateral Portugal - US relationship. I do most heartily wish great success to the participants in the Global Strategic Innovation mission. Torben Rankine Country Manager USA Leadership Business Consulting Last year we set about bringing 25 Portuguese companies to Boston and Silicon Valley within the Global Strategic Innovation Program. We are delighted to say that due to last year’s success, this time we’re 55 strong: 35 companies from Portugal and guest participants from Angola and Cape Verde, plus a set of 20 executive MBA students on a parallel program, limited to the Bay Area. It is good to see the hunger for innovation and entrepreneurship, in tune with the continued challenges in the global economy. We view innovation as a strategic challenge, tied to a company’s ability to pursue new areas of growth. In today’s economic climate it is through innovation and entrepreneurship that new jobs will be created and new markets developed. The GSI gives participants a taste of the innovation and entrepreneurship prevalent in Massachusetts and Silicon Valley, considered two of the most dynamic centers of innovation in the USA and the world. The GSI program also allows participants the opportunity to network and showcase some of the innovations that are emerging from Portugal and Portuguese speaking countries. Portugal has been developing several policies to promote innovation in its economy and business sectors, namely in Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicle, Smart Grids, Information and Communication Technologies, Metallurgy, Life Sciences (Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals and Health applications) and Infrastructures & Logistics. 5 We have a rich mix of participants from diverse economic sectors. However, no matter which their area of activity, participants signed up to this Program in order to: i) Learn about strategic innovation with the best world-class thinkers; ii) Focus on networking opportunities and the promotion of their companies; iii) Garner direct contact with selected successful innovative companies, iv) build closer ties between their country and company and American companies, research centers and investors. The GSI is a result of the joint efforts of many entities, listed in this booklet, to which we are very grateful, with a special mention to AICEP and ANEMM on the Portuguese side, whose participation and efforts made it possible to obtain the support of QREN to eligible participants, and the Portuguese American Legislative Caucus, PALCUS and the Plug and Play Tech Center on the American side, whose support has been fundamental for the success of this Program. We hope that this initiative lives up to each participant’s expectations and objectives. Welcome Note by Rep. António Cabral On behalf of the Portuguese Legislative Caucus of Massachusetts and my colleagues Senator Marc Pacheco and Senator Michael Rodrigues, I welcome the Portuguese Delegation of entrepreneurs and businessmen and the guests from Cape Verde and Angola. After 50 years of business in the Azores islands, SATA began operating non-regular charter flights for domestic and foreign tourist operators in 1995 using a Boeing 737/300. The company’s name changed from Oceanair to SATA Internacional on 19 March 1998, and on 17 June the company received its air operator’s certificate, thus becoming an independent company. Today, SATA Internacional uses four Airbus A310/300 and four Airbus A320/200. SATA Internacional’s flight maintenance and operating services are organized according to JAROPS requirements, the highest possible standards of European aeronautical authorities. In 1998, SATA Internacional won the public tender for the Lisbon and Porto/ Ponta Delgada and Funchal/ Ponta Delgada routes. Today the airline flies regularly to destinations such as Lisbon, Porto, Funchal, Frankfurt, London, Manchester, Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, Zurich, Copenhagen, Boston and Toronto. From the outset it has run and is still expanding a significant charter operation. The Dominican Republic, Cuba, Tenerife, Las Palmas, Lyon, Exeter, East Midlands, are just some of the destinations visited over the past years.
