THE ATELIER GESSOS MACEIRO®
The History and the Activity
Welcome to the ATELIER GESSOS MACEIRO®, (AGM) a family company founded at the end
of XVIII century, exactly in 1790. The company it is specialized in the art of the
preservation and restorations of interior decorations in plaster (Stucco) and it make part of
its patrimony a large quantity of originals plaster pieces and a vast written documentation.
This artistic, cultural and historical inheritance is important, not only to testify the creation
and the work which characterized certain times of our history, but also because they are
elements that carried with them an important spiritual message from the past. The knowhow, the techniques and the plaster work methods as passed from generation to
generation, making the AGM one of the oldest companies of Portugal and probably of
Europe, in its speciality.
Historical Heritage
From a very important part of the works, realized during the XVIII, XIX and XX centuries,
in result of the technology used in that time, where it was use in the mould maker, natural
and recycled products, such as, bone gelatine and bee wax, it arrived to nowadays the
original decorative elements from many works, and its number is over than a 1.000.
The Activities
AGM is a leader in plastering field and inside Building Restoration & Renovation. The
company is specialised in historical restoration and new decoration projects. Some of the
works includes palaces, churches, theatres, hotels, and private residences. AGM‘s home is
in Lisbon, Portugal, but our works goes all over the country and also for overseas. From
Europe to USA, to Angola and South Africa, we have been part of numerous Restoration
and Decoration projects.
Products and Services
In the AGM all the products are made in plaster, structured with a vegetal fibre, the Sisal,
which gives resistance and increase the plaster dilatation coefficient (important in
products for indirect lightning), according to the traditional methods. The articles are all
hand made by experimented professionals, which gives a great quality to the pieces.
AGM can be the source for contemporary or traditional designs. Whether are trying to
incorporate in a decoration-project, classic ornamentation (Greek, Roman, Renaissance,
Rococo, etc), or decorative elements, in order to re-create a classic style look, for a home or
a Public space, AGM can provide all solutions with their history and expertise. AGM have
the experience and manpower to take on any Restoration or Plastering project. AGM‘s

are skilled mould makers. We restore the client’s models in plaster and reproduce them
with mould making techniques that duplicate them with an incredible detail, from delicate
ornamentation to larger pieces of ornamental elements.
AGM can offer more than 2.000 different decorative plaster pieces for wall and ceilings
decorations, in most any style. The only limitation to the design is the imagination. We
show a list of our products:
1. Lighting-Ceiling Lamps (“Plafonniers”) and Wall Lamps (“Appliques”);
2. Ceilings Centres, Ceiling Medallions, Roses for Ceilings, Rosettes, Corners;
3. Decorative Elements, Mouldings, Frieze Mouldings, Cornices, Picture Rails, Chair
Rails;
4. Corbels, Figures, Decorative Pieces;
5. Columns (smoothed and fluted), Capitals (Corinthian, Ionic, Renaissance, etc.)

The Clients
Our expertise in Restoration, ornamental plaster and mould making, allow us to work to
Architects, Inside Decorators, Contractors and the public in general, in many
architecturally significant buildings all over Portugal. AGM is proud to has the privilege to
collaborate in many Restoration projects, where our craftsmen has the opportunity to
preserve the architectural style plaster and you may not notice where the original work
ends and ours begins. This is the most satisfying compliment of all.
Our structure and organisation, the attention to the aesthetics aspects and our expertise in
decorative styles of plaster, make us an important partnership that stands ready to serve
the needs of our clients in all areas of the plastering industry.
The Environment and Security
One of the great concerns of the AGM is the preservation of the environment. For that
reason we refuse to commercialise pollutant decorative materials or materials that could
represent any risk for the health and the life of our customers, being inflammable with the
liberation of high toxic gases. They are known as "plastic materials" and they are mainly:
Mouldings, Frieze Mouldings, Cornices, Picture Rails, Chair Rails, etc. They are made in
polyethylene, polyurethane, expanded polystyrene, etc.
In the AGM all the products are manufactured in ceramic plaster with a natural fiber, the
sisal, no pollutant materials and following the traditional methods. In that way AGM's
activity is friend of the environment and guarantees the security of our customers, in order
the plaster is a no combustion material.

Products for Indirect Lighting
The products produced AGM for indirect lighting use as main raw materials the ceramic
plaster and the sisal. They are pieces all hand-made by experienced professionals, what
gave them a high quality and a perfect finishing. The products installation on ceilings and
walls is very simple, just like their electrical system, in which must be installed 1 electric
lamp (wall lamps) and a minimum of 2 lamps in the “Plafonniers”. The electric lamps can
be placed inside the plaster lamps without any special equipment once the plaster has
inside in its structure a vegetable fiber, the sisal, that avoid the appearance of blemishes or
cracks, once increase the strength of the pieces but also increase the plaster expansion
coefficient. The AGM products for indirect lighting enrich the interior of the house making
it more elegant and pleasant. The nobility of the plaster makes it an ideal material for
indirect lighting, once the light, soft or intense, is reflected by the white of the plaster that
illuminates the wall or the ceiling of the room indirectly, valuing the objects that are in the
house and provide a calm and sophisticated ambience.
