COURSE GUIDE
Introduction and objectives - Beginner Level A1
Portuguese A1 is an introduction to Portuguese for students with little or no
previous knowledge of the language. All the basic grammar and vocabulary are
presented. Our main goal is communication in Portuguese, with special
emphasis on speaking, but all the other skills are also practiced. Students will
also be introduced to the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world through
readings of authentic materials, including brief dialogues, music and video.
The
class
is
conducted
in
Portuguese,
with
occasional
resort
to
English/Croatian for clarity purposes.
After completing the A1 level, you should be able to:
Understand
Listening - I can recognize familiar words and very basic phrases concerning
myself, my family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak
slowly and clearly.
Reading - I can understand familiar names, words and very simple sentence for
example on notices or in catalogues.
Speaking
Spoken interaction - I can interact in a simple way provided the other person is
prepared to repeat or rephrase things at a slower rate of speech and help me
formulate what I’m trying to say. I can ask and answer simple questions in areas
of immediate need or on very familiar topics.

Spoken production - I can use simple phrases and sentences to describe where I
live and people that I know.
Writing
I can write a short, simple postcard, for example sending holiday greetings. I can
fill in forms with personal details, for example entering my name, nationality and
address on a hotel registration form. I can write an email to inform class absence.
Duration and workload
(November till March) -­‐ module of 30 h The course is structured 120 min weekly in class.
Learners will have to spend around 1 h per week as autonomous work at home to
consolidate their learning and do homework such as:
- Reading and listening to material related to a certain unit;
- Doing exercises, both those included in the workbook and in the grammar
book;
- Online work related to Portuguese language and culture (research, quizzes,
interactive exercises, evaluation assessment,...);
Evaluation and Certification
- Attendance and participation in class.
- Participants in the course who want to get an international certificate can
submit to CIPLE - Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira (For
further information contact CLP/Camões Zagreb or visit
http://ww3.fl.ul.pt/caple/default.aspx )
- CLP/Camões Zagreb will certificate all the students that had participated and
finish with approve in the course.

Fee
There will be a kn 500 fee. Payment will be made in person before the course
starts. This fee includes CLP/Camões Zagreb membership fee, course material
and registration fee.
