Please notify a priest as soon as possible so that proper
arrangements for visiting can be made. The hospital is now
restricted by law from calling us directly.
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION:
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be before the Saturday or
Sunday masses. Please ask the priest to attend you. Otherwise
we will have special times during the year. Or you can call the
Parish Center and ask the priest to hear your confession.

familiar ou amigo, por favor comunique ao padre para que
seja dada a unção, os Ministros de Eucaristia podem levar a
comunhão aos que não podem sair de casa.
SACRAMENTO DA RECONCILIAÇÃO:
O Sacramento de Reconciliação será uma meia hora antes
das missas (sábado a noite e domingo a noite). Favor peça
ao padre para te atender. Ou poderá marcar uma hora na

My dear Parishioners,
This week I just would like to comment on our
General Parish Meeting last weekend. We had
over 60 people that spent last Saturday
afternoon together in our parish hall, reflecting
and sharing about our parish. There were our
English speaking Community, members of our
Portuguese Community and of course our
Brazilian parishioners. Of course language
differences are always a problem to be
overcome, but we did our best. This year there
was a nice group of our teenagers and they gave
us a nice touch of their joy and enthusiasm.
Sister Elis had a very inspired theme of a train
and its varied cars being pulled by a locomotive.
All of the cars symbolized our different pastoral
activities and committees. What was the result?
Well first of all it is critical that we all come
together to share, to reflect, to be of one mind
and one heart. This is what parish is all about.
Parish and church is not just coming to Mass on
Sunday, but to be community, to live as
brothers and sisters. Many times I have heard
that coming to these meetings doesn’t really
matter and nothing is resolved. This is not the
point! The church must have what is called
“collegiality” or in other words there needs to be
active participation in the church community
and these meetings are an opportunity to be
heard and to have a voice. In other words it is a
time to reflect and to have a voice. Actually this
general meeting of the parish is an extension of
the parish pastoral council which meets every
month to discuss the journey of the parish. We
try to involve the whole community in the life
of the parish. This is what our goal is in the
long run. We try!
Also this past Sunday six members of
our parish received their certificates that they
have finished the Course in Ministerial
Formation: Geraldo Silva, José Eduardo Silva
de Jesus, Katia Farias, Maria Conceição Silva,
Rosimery Ferrari, Sinara Paula Alvim Rocha
and Terezinha de Paula. There was a graduation

in the church of the Immaculate Conception in
Secaucus. I want to congratulate all those who finished
the course. It was three years of perseverance and
dedication. Years ago Sister Kate began to give this
course in Portuguese. When I first came here they
used to call this course: Sister Kate’s Course. Actually
this course is an Archdiocesan Course and we here in
St. James are giving this course in Portuguese in the
name of the Archdiocese. And so once again this week
we are beginning a new semester and if anyone is
interested please come around. It is in Portuguese
every Friday evening at 8:00pm. The course is three
years with three semesters: Fall, winter and spring.
Each semester has a different theme: Old Testament,
New Testament, the Liturgical Year, the Sacraments,
Church, the Christian Life, the History of the Church,
Evangelization, and Ministry.
Once again,
congratulations to those who finished the course and we
hope that more people will come and grow and learn.
The course is really a wonderful thing and our parish is
blessed with a good number of parishioners who have
gone through the course over the years. These people
make up the core of our parish.

CALENDÁRIO SEMANAL DA COMUNIDADE
PORTUGUESA E BRASILEIRA
Meus queridos paroquianos,
Quero comentar sobre a nossa Assembleia
Paroquial que realizamos no Sábado passado. Mais
ou menos umas 60 pessoas tinham participado
refletindo, rezando, partilhando sobre a nossa vida
de paróquia e comunidade. Tinham Americanos,
Portugueses e Brasileiros. Para os Americanos
sempre tem a dificuldade da lingua porque tudo foi
realizado em Português. Esse ano tinham um bom
grupo de jovens adolescentes. Sei que não foi fácil
para eles mas apreciamos sua presença alegre cheia
de entusiasmo. Agradecemos a Irmã Elis por sua
criatividade. A idéia do trenzinho foi fantástica e
envolveu todo o mundo.
As vezes pessoas
reclamam dessas assembleias que não resolvem
nada! Que nada muda! Procuramos escutar e mudar
as coisas que podem ser mudadas. Talvez a oração
da Serenidade aplicaria aqui: Meu Deus, me dê a
serenidade de aceitar as coisas que não posso mudar,
a coragem de mudar as coisas que posso, e a
sabedoria de conhecer a diferença. A finalidade das
assembleias é avaliar e crescer mas também é dar
uma oportunidade de ser Igreja, de participar no
planejamento e ser solidários uns com os outros. É
uma oportunidade de refletir e aprofundar no próprio
sentido da Igreja. Ser Igreja, ser paróquia não é
somente participar na missa ou rezar o terço. As
assembleias nos dão oportunidade dar suas idéias, de
mostrar que dão valor a comunidade. É isso que é
Igreja. As assembleias são sinais de vitalidade.
Essas assembleias fazem parte ou são uma extensão
do nosso Conselho Pastoral Paroquial que reune
cada mês. Com o Vaticano II, a Igreja busca a
colegialidade, quer dizer de envolver todos na
própria vida da comunidade. Nós em nossa paróquia
acreditamos nisso e cada mês tentamos envolver a
comunidade nas decisões da comunidade, seja
pastorais, seja financeiras. Nem sempre somos
perfeitos mas tentamos respeitar e viver essa
caminhada.
Também esse Domingo passado seis
membros na nossa comunidade foram formados no
Curso de Formação Ministerial: Geraldo Silva, José
Eduardo Silva de Jesus, Katia Farias, Maria
Conceição Silva, Rosimery Ferrari, Sinara Paula
Alvim Rocha e Terezinha de Paula. Houve a
“Formatura” na Igreja da Imaculada Conceição em
Secaucus. Quero parabenizar a todos que terminaram o
curso. Foram três anos de perserverança e dedicação. Foi
Irmã Kate que iniciou o curso há mais ou menos uns 14
anos. E por isso muitos no início chamaram o curso “o
Curso de Irmã Kate”. Mas esse curso de fato é um curso
promovido pela própria Arquidiocese e nós aqui de Saint
James somos os responsáveis de dar o curso na Diocese em
Português. A nova caminhada do curso está começando e se
alguem quer fazer o curso, venha essa semana na Sexta feira
às 8:00pm. O curso tem três blocos cada ano e cada bloco
tem 8 encontros. Os blocos tratam assuntos importantes
como Antigo Testamento, Novo Testamento, o Ano
Litúrgico, os Sacramentos, O Ano Litúrgico, a Igreja, A
vida Cristã, a História de Igreja de ponto de vista de
Spiritualidade, Evangelização e Ministério Colaborativo.
Então parabens para vocês que se formaram e agora
esperamos que voces entram em algum ministério da nossa
comunidade. A nossa paróquia já é abençoada em ter um
bom número de paroquianos que completaram o curso e
fazem parte do núcleo da nossa paróquia.
