A Research Technician Fellowship (BI) is now available within the project IND_CHANGE - INDicator-based
modelling tools to predict landscape CHANGE and to improve the application of social-ecological research in
adaptive land management (Ferramentas de modelação baseadas em indicadores para prever alterações na
paisagem e promover a aplicação de investigação sócio ecológica na gestão adaptativa do território), at
Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (PTDC/AAG-MAA/4539/2012 – FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-027863),
financed by national funds by FCT and co-financed by Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER)
throughout COMPETE – Programa Operacional Factores de Competitividade (POFC).

Candidates will be admitted to the competition when demonstrating: (i) a M.Sc. title in Mathematical,
Computer, Geographical Information Sciences or equivalent; (ii) practical experience in development and
evaluation of Web platforms ; (iii) practical experience and autonomy in the use of open source technology to
develop Web GIS solutions, including database management systems, geospatial data geoserver, Java
programming language and javascript libraries to create dynamic maps and rich internet applications; and (iv)
autonomy, accountability, oral and written communication skills in a scientific context.
Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in: (i) spatial database management and
database development; (ii) development of Web GIS solutions (including mapping projects, geoportals and
discovery and catalogue services); and (iii) Research and Development (R&D) projects involving Web
applications development based on open source technology.
Plano de trabalhos/Workplan:
The successful candidate will support project tasks related to the development of a Web-based Spatial Decision
Support System (WSDSS) to support the organization, visualization, querying, analysis and sharing of ecological
or environmental (meta)data to support social-ecological research and adaptive land management decision
making. Such tasks will include: (1) the identification and analysis of data and functional requirements for the
collaborative WSDSS; (2) the development of the WSDSS following a multi-layer client-server architecture
model, composed by the integration of different Free and Open Source Software; (3) the adaptation of a
metadata geoportal to facilitate the access, use and sharing of (meta)data information; (4) the collaboration in
writing project technical reports and scientific publications; and (5) the execution of platform tests, such as
conformance, performance and interoperability testing, as well as the implementation of monitoring
procedures on the use of the developed WSDSS.

Local de trabalho/Workplace:
The work will be carried out at Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (IPVC), under the scientific supervision
of Prof. Pedro Castro.
Duração da bolsa/Grant duration:
The grant will be awarded for a period of 6 months, renewable for another 6 months, due to start in July, 2014.
Valor do subsídio de manutenção mensal/Value of monthly maintenance allowance:
Monthly allowance will be €980,00, according to the grant regulations of FCT in Portugal
(http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be done by bank transfer at the end of each
month.
Métodos de selecção / Selection methods:
The ranking of candidates will be performed by a global evaluation based on the CV (40%), the previous
experience of the applicant relevant to the project and work-plan (50%), and the motivation of the applicant
(10%). Applications should include a CV accompanied by a motivation letter and copies of all relevant academic
certificates. All documents should be submitted in English. The jury may call the best candidates for an
interview, to better assess their experience and motivation, and eventually decide not to award the scholarship
if the quality of candidates is lower than desired.
