HISTORY

Everything in this island reminds us
of secrecy. The protected topography, and the extreme and Atlantic
condition, as well as the natural isolation of the island have driven the
island away from the winds of change that have shaped throughout times the daily live of the rest of the
islands of the archipelago. In fact,
Brava was left alone and isolated, in
the dullness of a contemplating and
nostalgic drift of the vast ocean... It
was filled with this sentiment that
Eugénio Tavares recreated the modern style of morna, by expressing,
simultaneously, the essence of the
soul of the men and women from
Brava.
Although Brava was discovered in
1462, settlement in the island only
started in 1620 with the arrival of
sailors from the islands of Madeira
and the Azores. For this reason, and
also due to the fact that the island
was maintained at the margin of slave trade, a significant portion of the
population of is of lighter skin than
the population of the other islands
of the archipelago. In 1680, after
the apocalyptical volcano eruption
that devastated the island of Fogo,
part of the inhabitants looked for
protection in the neighboring island
of Brava and stayed there.
Brava awoke for the hectic mercantile life of the modern world for the
first time in 1730, when the British
military man called George Roberts
purchased the rights for the exploration of earth orchid (see box) that
covered the slopes. The population
doubled in less than 50 years. At
the end of the 18th century, when
the whaling vessels from Rhode
Island and New Bedford adventured themselves in the South they
found in Brava the ideal conditions
for the supply of ships and for reinforcing the ships’ crew with more
experienced seamen. This exchange led to the unusual outbreak of
emigration of capeverdeans from
Brava and Fogo to the New England coast. In 1843, an American
Consulate was established in Brava,
and in 1850 a secondary school was
inaugurates, attracting students from
all over the archipelago, and even
from Guinea-Bissau. Brava was then
one the most pleasant island of the
archipelago where one could live.
The remittances of the Americans
– the name that was given to the
capeverdean emigrants in the USA
– became the ‘money tree’ that was
missing in the country. However,
the American depression of 1930
and the long periods of drought that
followed put an end to the dream
of wellbeing of this Atlantic corner.
There are about 8,000 inhabitants
in the island, and most of them live
in the Village Nova de Sintra, the island capital.

Brava wurde 1462 entdeckt, die
Besiedlung begann aber erst 1620
mit der Ankunft der Seeleute aus
Madeira und den Azoren. Aus diesem Grund, und weil auf der Insel
kein Sklavenhandel stattfand, hat ein
grosser Teil der Bevölkerung eine
hellere Hautfarbe als die Bewohner
der anderen Inseln des Archipels.
Im Jahre 1680, nach dem apokalyptischen Vulkanausbruch der die
Insel Fogo verwüstete, suchte ein
Teil der Bevölkerung Fogos Schutz
auf der Nachbarinsel und ist dort
geblieben. Brava erwachte erstmals
für den Handel der modernen Welt
im Jahre 1730, als der Britische Soldat George Roberts das Handelsrecht für Orchideen erhielt, die die
Hänge bedeckten. Die Bevölkerung
der Insel verdoppelte sich in weniger als 50 Jahren. Am Ende des 18.
Jahrhunderts, als die Walfangschiffe
im Süden Abenteuer suchten, fanden sie in Brava ideale Bedingungen
für die Wiederversorgung der Schiffe und Stärkung der Besatzung mit
erfahrenen Seeleuten. Mit diesem
Austausch begann der ungewöhnliche Auswanderungsaufbruch der
Kapverdier von Brava und Fogo an
die Küste von Neu England. 1843
wurde ein amerikanisches Konsulat
in Brava eingerichtet, und im Jahre
1850 wurde eine Sekundarschule
eingeweiht, die Studenten vom gesamten Archipel und auch aus Guinea Bissau angezogen hat. Brava
war zu der Zeit die angenehmste
Insel des Archipels, um dort zu leben.
Die Überweisungen der Amerikaner – das war der Name, der den
kapverdischen Emigranten in den
USA gegeben wurde – war die
Geldquelle, die dem Land fehlte.
Jedoch die amerikanische Depression des Jahres 1930 und eine lange Dürre setzten dem Traum vom
Wohlbefinden in diesem Teil des
Atlantiks ein Ende. Heute leben ca.
8000 Einwohner auf der Insel, die
meisten von ihnen in dem kleinen
Ort Nova de Sintra, der Hauptstadt
der Insel.

Located at 520 meter of height,
encrusted in volcanic rocks, this
exotic town is completely covered
with fog during weeks running. On
the bright days, one can glimpse at
the island of Fogo, in the middle of
the ocean. The houses designed
with the Portuguese colonial style
are decorated in the exterior with
red glazed tiles and covered with
exuberant vegetation in the rainy
years.
Auf 520 m Höhe gelegen, eingebettet in vulkanische Felsen wird
diese exotische Stadt manchmal
über Wochen von Nebel bedeckt. An klaren Tagen kann man
die Insel Fogo mitten im Ozean
sehen. Die Häuser, die im portugiesischen Kolonialstil entworfen
wurden, sind aussen mit roten
Kacheln dekoriert und in regnerischen Jahren mit üppiger Vegetation bedeckt.

It’s one of the most beautiful bays
of Cape Verde. The village is installed at the foot of the mountains,

winds. It’s the greenest area of the
island due to the existence of permanent water streams, the most

A building from the end of the 19th
century, where the famous composer and poet, Eugénio Tavares,
lived, and who recreated capeverdean morna by giving new sonorities to it, and by writing the lyrics,
for the first time, using the creole
dialect.. He was born in 1867 and
died in 1930.

either on foot or by car, to Miradouro de Nova Sintra (Nova Sintra’s

so you may get a global glimpse at
the island. It’s also worth walking until Nossa Senhora do Monte. You’ll
