by car (a four-wheel-drive by preference) or by the public transports.
The island’s best beaches are located
close to the Village of Maio, directed
to the North, and can be reached on
foot.
Regular transports connect the Village of Maio with the other small villages, such as Alcatraz or Morrinho.
Nevertheless, the best way to make
the circuit of the island is by bicycle.

HISTORY
GESCHICHTE
Some people say that Maio is the forgotten island of Cape Verde, the only
one that did not fit into the identity
and productive framework of the archipelago. It was discovered in 1460,
but its settlement only started in the
16th century. Before that time, it was
used for cattle breeding, particularly
goats.
Between the 16th and the 19th centuries, the main and almost exclusive
productive activity of the island was
based on the extraction of salt carried out by the British people. In fact,
the British presence in this island was
so remarkable that the noble British
corsair, Sir Francis Drake, had the fort
of the Village of Maio – indispensable to sustain the frequent attacks of
the pirates – built in 1588. The salt

that was extracted form the salt pits
in the island was sent to Santiago
that afterwards exported it to Europe, Africa and Brazil. During all of
the 17th century, an average of 80
British ships anchored yearly in the
Maio, and carried about 200 tons of
salt and sailed towards other places
to catch cod fish.
The 20th century was fustigated by
frequent periods of drought that
resulted in the flux of massive emigration. Today, the island has 4.000
inhabitants, living in the capital, the
Village of Maio, and Calheta.

Jahrhunderts gingen im Durchschnitt
jährlich 80 englische Schiffe auf Maio
vor Anker, um mehr als 200 Tonnen
Salz abzutransportieren; gleichfalls
segelten sie von hier aus zu benachbarten Fanggründen, um Kabeljau zu
fischen.

It’s also called Porto Inglês. In the
centre of the village, around the main
square, you’ll witness the architecture of the buildings which is a mix of
British and Portuguese colonial styles.
The village spreads up to the small
and steep slope until the Church of
Nossa Senhora da Luz, a building in
the baroque style (1872). The fort of
São José, an 18th century restored
building, is located in the Southeast
limit point of the island. It is one of
the landmarks in the history of the
island of Maio and of Cape Verde

in general. Make sure you visit Ponte Velho (the old bridge), farol (the
lighthouse) and the Architecture Cooperative Association operating in an
African like hut. There is a beautiful
5 km-long lagoon with salt located
in the North of the Village of Maio,
surrounded by vegetation adapted
to the existing difficult hygienic conditions.

It’s worth visiting Morro for its beach,
with an extension and shape that va-
ries according to the tides and to the
seasons. Make sure you also visit the
Ceramic Cooperative Association.

There are desert white fine sandy
beaches with crystal blue sea in the
island of Maio. Some of them are far
away from the main roads and can
only be reached on 4 wheel drive
cars, or by walking some kilometers. The beaches in the North of
the island, for instance Praia Real,
are dangerous for swimming. We
recommend the following beaches’
itineraries:
• Right at the exit of the Village of
Maio you’ll find a nice beach called
Bitche Rotcha. Besides the new
pier, the beach is some kilometers
long. Going towards the South for
about 45 minutes, you’ll get to
the beach named praia de Ponta
Preta.
• In the North of the Village of Maio,
after the salt pits, you’ll get to praia
do Morro, and if you walk 3 km
up, you’ll get to praia da Calheta, a
small fishing village.
• If you leave Morrinho towards
Northwest, by taking an irregular
trek, you’ll get to praia de Santana, one of the wildest and most
hidden beaches of the island, and
you can also swim in the beaches
of Calhetinha and Pau Seco. Close
to this place, in Porto Cais, you’ll
find the beaches of Tartarugas and

Cais, an in the right side there is
a huge salt pit. The trek continues
some kilometers up and it suddenly ends. You may continue on
foot to the
North, until you get to the beaches
of Galeão and Real, from which
you may glimpse at the islet Laje
Branca.
• the naturalists may watch turtles
and some rare sea bird in the
North of the Island, particularly in
the islet ilhéu Laje Branca, located
opposite Pedro Vaz.
• In the oriental coast of the island
you’ll find the beaches of Praiona
(Praia Gonçalo), Prainha (in Pedro
Vaz) and Boca Ribeira (between
Pedro Vaz and Alcatraz). A little
bit to the South, after Figueira da
Horta, in the direction of Ribeira de João on a 10-minute walk,
you’ll get to a magnificent beach of
blue sea.

• Nördlich des Ortes Vila do Maio,
hinter den Salinen, ist der StrandMorround 3 km weiter der Strand
von Calheta, einem Fischerdorf.
• Verlassen Sie Morrinho in nordöstlicher Richtung, über einen unebenen Weg, kommen Sie zum
Strand von Santana, einem er
wildesten und verstecktesten der
Insel, aber Sie können sich auch
an den Stränden von Calhetinha
und Pau Seco erfrischen. Hier,
