s últimos meses do ano são ideais para
conhecer destinos carismáticos que, com
a chegada de temperaturas mais frias, se
revestem de um ambiente
particularmente charmoso. É o caso da
cidade canadiana de Vancouver, um dos melhores locais
do mundo para viver. Com uma paisagem repleta de
montanhas, praias, jardins e parques, Vancouver oferece
um sem número de atrações, como belos passeios pelo
famoso Stanley Park: um belíssimo parque urbano com 9
km de calçada à beira-mar e 200 km de trilhos e
ciclovias. Se dispõe de menos tempo, proponho um fim
de semana no Douro, onde pode desfrutar de paisagens
deslumbrantes e excelentes hotéis com restaurantes ricos
em vinhos e gastronomia de ótima qualidade.
O aproximar do fim do ano é, ainda, uma ocasião
propícia para fazer um balanço dos projetos realizados
na SATA em 2012. Neste contexto, destaco a construção
do Centro de Formação Aeronáutica dos Açores, na Ilha
de Santa Maria, onde será ministrada formação em várias
áreas ligadas ao serviço de transporte aéreo, como a
certificação de pilotos em equipamentos Airbus A320 e a
formação de pessoal de cabine. Esta infraestrutura é de
uma importância fundamental para a consolidação da
SATA no mundo da aviação comercial, ao mesmo tempo
que amplia a notoriedade dos Açores e acrescenta valor à
economia açoriana pela via de exportação de serviços.
A satisfação sentida com o sucesso deste projeto
complementa-se com o bom termo de outras iniciativas
que tiveram como objetivo prioritário fazer chegar aos
nossos clientes um maior leque de serviços a valores
mais baixos. É o caso das compras coletivas, lançadas
com o novo site da SATA, www.sata.pt, com tarifas
muito apelativas e exclusivas deste novo canal de
vendas, pioneiro em Portugal, bem como o novo motor
de pesquisa de tarifas promocionais, que permite um
acesso mais simples e rápido às melhores tarifas.
Continuamos, também, a estabelecer parcerias
estratégicas com companhias aéreas de referência que
voam para todo o mundo, incrementando o
desenvolvimento do turismo nos Açores e facilitando o
acesso a tarifas mais competitivas a quem pretender
viajar para destinos não operados pela SATA. Neste
sentido, de destacar o acordo de interline estabelecido
com a Virgin America, firmado a pensar especialmente
nos açorianos da Costa Oeste dos EUA, região onde a
Virgin America tem uma posição de destaque e oferece
excelentes ligações para Boston como, por exemplo, a
partir de São Francisco. Assim, viajar da Califórnia para
os Açores tornou-se, subitamente, mais fácil e mais
económico. De referir, ainda, os acordos de interline com
a vizinha Binter Canarias, o que promoverá melhores
ligações no espaço da Macaronésia, bem como a
espanhola Air Europa. De referir, ainda, o acordo
interline com a reputada companhia escandinava SAS e
subsidiárias Wideroe e Blue1, que permitirá reforçar a
notoriedade da SATA e dos Açores nos importantes
mercados emissores da Escandinávia.
Antes de me despedir, ressalvo a comemoração, este ano,
de 65 anos de voos comerciais na SATA, celebração que
pretendemos abrilhantar com um serviço inovador e
sempre merecedor da sua preferência.
Resta-me desejar-lhe Festas Felizes junto da sua família e

Welcome aboard!
The last months of the year are the ideal time to get to know
more charismatic destinations which, with the temperature
getting cooler, become a more charming atmosphere. It’s the case
of the Canadian city of Vancouver, one of the best places in the
world to live in. With a landscape full of mountains, beaches,
gardens and parks, Vancouver has a great variety of attractions
to offer, such as agreeable strolls in the famous Stanley Park, a
stunningly beautiful urban park with a 9km-long seaside
promenade and 200 km of trails and bicycle lanes. If you don’t
have tat much time, I suggest a weekend in Douro where you can
enjoy stunning landscapes and excellent hotels with restaurants
with a long list of wines and excellent, high-quality food.
The approach of the end of the year is also a good occasion to
assess the projects carried out by SATA in 2012. In this context,
I would like to point out the building of the Centro de Formação
Aeronáutica dos Açores, (The Aeronautical Training Center of
the Azores), on the Island of Santa Maria, where training will
be given to several areas connected with airlines, such as
certifying pilots on Airbus A320 equipment and the training of
cabin crews. This infrastructure is of utmost importance for
SATA’s consolidation in the field of commercial aviation and, at
the same time, it broadens the notoriety of the Azores and adds
value to the Azorean economy by means of exporting services.
The satisfaction we draw from the success of this project is
complemented by the success of other initiatives which have the
main aim of putting the largest number possible of services at
the disposal of our customers at the lowest cost. This is the case
of collective shopping which were launched with SATA’s new
site, www.sata.pt, with very appealing fares, exclusive to this
new sales channel, the first of its kind in Portugal. The new
search tool for promotional fares allowing a simpler and quicker
access to the best fares is also the first of its kind in Portugal.
We continue to as well establish strategic partnerships with
renowned airline flying all over the world, incrementing the
development of tourism in the Azores and making it easier to access
more competitive fares to whoever wishes to travel to destinations to
which SATA doesn’t fly. In that sense, we would like to refer the
interline agreement signed with Virgin America, which was signed
bearing in mind especially Azoreans living in the west coast of the
USA, a region where Virgin America holds an important position
and offers excellent connections to Boston, for instance, as from San
Francisco. Thus, travelling from California to the Azores became
easier and cheaper, all of a sudden. We would also like to refer the
interline agreements with the neighboring Binter Canarias, which
will allow for better connections in the Macaronesia area, as well as
the Spanish Air Europa. We would also like to refer the interline
agreement with the renowned Scandinavian company SAS and
subsidiaries, Wideroe and Blue1, which will reinforce SATA’s and
the Azores’ notoriety in the important Scandinavian markets.
Before I take my leave, I would like to refer that this year, SATA
is celebrating 65 years of commercial flights, a celebration we
hope to brighten with an innovative service always worthy of
your preference.

um belíssimo fenómeno natural que transforma o céu num
cenário mítico e colorido. Esta manifestação da natureza pode
ser visualizada ao final da tarde ou à noite, a olho nu.

natural phenomenon which transforms the sky into mystical and colorful scenery. This
phenomenon of nature can be appreciated in the evening, or at night, to the naked eye.
WINTER WITH TOUCHES OF MAGIC
If you appreciate the charm and coziness of a winter
trip, you’ll certainly like to spend some time in
Vancouver, where endless natural beauties are allied
to a modern architecture thus making this city a
unique place in the world.
In December, Christmas lights lend Vancouver’s
charismatic atmosphere a truly magic touch. The
Capilano Suspension Bridge is worth visiting; it’s a
150-meter long bridge, suspended by steel cables
which crosses the River Capilano and which, at
Christmas, is decorated with lights turning it into a
fascinating scenery.

DE FORMAÇÃO AERONÁUTICA DOS AÇORES
o dia 19 de setembro de
2012, a SATA inaugurou um
moderno e inovador centro
de formação - Centro de Formação Aeronáutica dos
Açores (CFAA) -, em Vila do Porto, ilha de Santa Maria.
Este Centro de Formação reforça a posição de Santa
Maria no panorama mundial da aviação e eleva a
qualidade da formação dada aos colaboradores da
SATA, orientando-os para a prestação de um serviço
de excelência aos seus clientes.
THE AZORES AERONAUTICAL TRAINING
CENTER HAS OPENED
On September the 19th 2012, SATA opened a modern
and innovative training center – - Centro de
Formação Aeronáutica dos Açores (CFAA) –, in Vila
do Porto, Santa Maria Island. This Training Center
reinforces Santa Maria’s position in the aviation
worldwide scenery and improves the quality of
training given to SATA’s collaborators, leading them to
offer a service of excellence to their clients.
O CFAA vai potenciar a venda de formação
com a marca SATA a todos os interessados no setor da aviação
comercial e ampliar a notoriedade dos Açores dinamizando,
ao mesmo tempo, a economia açoriana.
The CFAA will boost the selling of training with the brand SATA to all those who are
interested in the commercial aviation field and increasing the Azores’ notoriety and, at
the same time, the Azorean economy.

que lhes deram a oportunidade de competir com
alguns dos melhores surfistas do mundo no SATA
Airlines Azores Pro 2012.

ual o significado deste prémio?
Pedro Cordeiro - Desde que o
WQS (World Qualifying Series)
surgiu nos Açores que sonhava entrar na prova. No WQS
do ano passado existiram
rumores sobre a possibilidade
de haver atletas açorianos na prova de 2012. Foi aí
que pensei que existia uma hipótese de realizar um
sonho. Para isso teria que trabalhar muito, o que fiz.
No dia de prova só pensava: “O ano de 2012 resume-se a este dia, será hoje que irei ver se trabalhei mesmo
este ano e se conseguirei realizar o meu objetivo”. Ter
conseguido o 1º lugar foi um alívio e uma felicidade
enormes. Restava-me aproveitar ao máximo aquela
semana de novas experiências.
Weverton Nunes - Ter conseguido uma das vagas
dos trials foi uma grande satisfação e representar os
Açores outra, ainda maior. Apesar de não ter conse-

two wildcards specially dedicated to Azorean
surfers. This made it possible for them to
compete with some of the best surfers in the
world in the SATA Airlines Azores Pro 2012.
What does this award mean?
Pedro Cordeiro – Since the WQS (World Qualifying
Series) started in the Azores I have been dreaming to enter
the competition. In last year’s WQS there were numerous
rumors on the possibility of there being Azorean surfers
in the 2012 competition. It was then I though there was
possibilities of making a dream come true. It’d have to
work a lot for that. That’s just what I did. The day of the
competition the only thing I could think of was: “The year
2012 boils down to this day, it’s today that’s I’ll see if I
really worked this year and if I’ll be able to accomplish

patrocinador Espaço Azul Surf Shop -, foi importante mostrar que os surfistas têm de ter uma postura
exemplar para os mais novos.
Como é ser surfista nos Açores?
PC - É excelente, porque temos ilhas com ondas de
classe mundial, onde já passaram alguns dos melhores surfistas do mundo. Infelizmente, para além da
ilha de São Miguel, ainda só consegui surfar na ilha
de Santa Maria, mas já tenho planos para ir a outras
ilhas. Em São Miguel temos muita sorte por ter uma
costa norte e uma costa sul onde normalmente existem sempre ondas, com a vantagem de levar apenas
15 minutos a chegar de um lado ao outro da ilha. De
facto, não tenho intenções de ir viver para outro lado
porque, em relação a ondas, nos Açores estamos no
top dos melhores sítios.

and to represent the Azores was yet another, even bigger.
Despite not having succeeded in doing my best in the
world competition, because I always try to represent the
club that sponsors me in the best way possible – the Clube
Náutico da Lagoa and my sponsor Espaço Azul Surf Shop
– it was important to show that surfers demonstrate an
exemplary posture for the younger surfers.
What is it like to be a surfer in the Azores?
PC – It’s excellent because we have islands with worldclass waves, where some of the best surfers in the world
have visited. Unfortunately, apart from São Miguel Island,
I was only able to surf in Santa Maria Island, but I already have plans to go to other islands. In São Miguel we
are very lucky to have a north and a south coast where

WN - Ser surfista nos Açores é fantástico, pois são ilhas
magníficas com um esplendor natural e com tudo o que
é necessário na ideologia de vida de um surfista: harmonia com a natureza, amigos maravilhosos e muita tranquilidade para viver e surfar.
O que se sente quando aparece uma onda perfeita?
PC- Quando todos apanharam uma onda e ainda estão
a remar para fora, e eu estou lá fora sozinho e aparece
a onda do dia, ou mesmo a onda em que sabemos que
é aquela “alta onda”, a minha pulsação dispara imediatamente e começo a remar com o sentimento de que
tenho de fazer tudo certo para não perder essa oportunidade. Depois de me meter em pé é deixar que tudo
flua e desfrutar ao máximo.
WN - É uma sensação incrível, pois a adrenalina sobe!

with all that is necessary in a surfer’s life ideology: harmony with nature, wonderful friends and a lot of tranquility to life and to surf.
What do you feel when the perfect wave appears?
PC – When everyone has caught a wave and are already
paddling out, and I’m out there all alone and the ‘wave
of the day’ appears, or even the wave we know is the
“high wave”, my pulse immediately gets faster and I start
to paddle with the feeling I must do everything possible
to not to lose this opportunity. After I stand up and let
everything flow and enjoy the best I can.
WN – It’s an incredible feeling, because we get an adrenaline rush! The wish to get another perfect wave is even

se situa na Califórnia.
WN - Desde que comecei a praticar surf que gostaria
muito de ir às ilhas Mentawai, na Indonésia.
Qual foi a sua maior conquista no surf?
PC - Sem dúvida ter entrado no SATA Airlines Azores Pro
(WQS de 6 estrelas que integra as séries de qualificação
do circuito mundial da Associação de Profissionais de
Surf) com todo o apoio dos Açores!
WN - No que toca a competições, ter conseguido um 17º
na segunda etapa da Liga Meo Pro Surf (campeonato
nacional), embora só tivesse sido possível após a conquista da Taça Açores (título regional), o que aconteceu

Is there any dream beach to surf?
PC – I am very curious to surf at a place in Hawaii called
Pipeline and backdoor. It is said that this is the place for
a surfer to show what he’s really worth. I also dream in
surfing a wave called Trestles in California.
WN – Ever since I started surfing I would very much like
going to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia.
What’s your biggest achievement in surf?
PC – Undoubtedly having entered SATA Airlines Azores
Pro (a six-star WQS which is part of the world qualifying
series for the Association of Professional Surfers) with
Azores’ full support!
WN – Regarding competitions, having managed a 17th
place in the second leg of the competition of the Liga
Meo Pro Surf (a national competition), despite it only
having been possible after obtaining the Taça Açores
(regional title), which happened on three occasions.
Nevertheless, naturally the greatest achievement is the
privilege of gliding amongst friends in the big and small
sea waves.

What are your biggest ambitions regarding surf?
PC – I’d like to one day become a professional surfer!
WN – To manage to go on surf trips with my friends, to
watch one leg of the world elite (who knows the one in
Peniche…) But my main objective is, above all, to enjoy
this wonderful sport as long as my age permits!

foi feita na companhia do avô
e dos pais aos 10, 12 anos. A
“Big Apple” impressionou-o.
Regressou, depois, várias vezes,
à cidade onde hoje vive com a mulher. Adora viajar
por lazer, mas, presentemente, é o trabalho que o leva
a somar muitas horas de voo. Em 2011, fez um total
de 170 mil quilómetros em viagens aéreas, o que equivale a cerca de quatro voltas ao mundo. Em 2012,
prevê superar esse feito.
Duas vezes por ano, regressa aos Açores para matar
saudades da família, dos amigos e da ilha de S.
Miguel, onde ambiciona vir a ter uma casa com vista
para o mar.
Apesar de residir fora de Portugal há cerca de dez
anos, Manuel Lima não se considera emigrante, antes
cidadão do mundo, que adora viver em grandes

He was born in the Azores, took his degree
in Lisbon and did his internship in
Copenhagen. After London, he is now living
in New York. For the designer Manuel Lima,
the world is a village. The first trip to New York
was with his grandfather and his parents at 10, 12. The
Big Apple made an impression on him. He after that went
back, to this city where he now lives with his wife, many
times. He loves to travel for pleasure, but currently it’s his
work that makes him accumulate a lot of flight hours. In
2011 he totaled 170 thousand kilometers in air travels,
which is the equivalent to traveling around the world four
times. In 2012 he expects to travel even more.
Twice a year, he returns to the Azores. To São Miguel, to
be with his family and friends. He would love to own a
house there overlooking the sea.

world, which he fins a very enriching experience. Besides
his work at Microsoft in New York, he holds conferences
in many parts of the world. His first book in English has
already been translated into Japanese, Mandarin and
French. He is finishing a second book.
He rarely buys books that have to do with design. Generally
he chooses history, geography and biology books. For
Manuel Lima creativity derives from diversity. He admits
the Azores are inspiring and the archipelago’s arts and literature are a proof of that.
Despite never having imagined his life would turn out the
way it did, he admits he especially likes what he does.
He is incapable of sleeping on planes. He uses flights to
relax and for introspection. “To fly is like going top a
spa”, he admits.
In 2009, the Azorean designer was nominated by “Creativity” magazine one of that
year’s most creative and influent personality.

por entre as folhas, vão cortando com tesouras de poda
de pontas curvas os cachos maduros, em gestos rápidos
e repetitivos. As mulheres entoam uma canção popular a meia voz, os homens falam sobre o quotidiano. É

from Douro still follow the ancestral traditions at the time of harvesting, celebrating
it with visitors.
Under the scorching sun in the early afternoon, a group
of workers jumps over a stonewall to go back to work, after
having satisfied their hunger with a lunch brought from
home. Leaning over rows of vineyards, with their hands
among the leaves, they cut with parrot-beak pruning shears, the ripe bunches in quick and repetitive movements.
The women sing a folk song in a low voice; the men speak
about their daily life. It’s one more day of grape harvesting in the Alto Douro wine region, a hard work which

Tal como o Douro, que passou de um rio revolto para
um curso de água domesticado pelas barragens, a
evolução dos tempos também trouxe mudanças aos
rituais vindimeiros. Antes, as “rogas” de trabalhadores vindos das aldeias ficavam semanas a fio a trabalhar de sol a sol, alojando-se em telheiros, nas quintas. Contudo, mesmo depois de um dia de labuta,
havia disposição para, nas “lagaradas” onde se pisava a uva, bailar pela noite dentro ao som da concertina. Retratos de outros tempos, descritos por Miguel
Torga no romance Vindima, que apelidava as paisagens durienses como um “poema geológico”.
Os rituais podem ter-se desvanecido um pouco, mas
a vindima continua a ser um dos momentos mais
importantes do ano para as gentes do Douro. Cada

harvesting,” one of the female workers says.
As the Douro, which evolved from a river of rough waters
to a tamed watercourse, the evolution of times also brought
changes to the grape harvesting rituals. Before, these grape
harvesting workers, known as ‘rogas’, coming from villages, used to work for weeks form dawn to dusk, lodging
on the farms in small sheds. Nevertheless, even after a
hard day’s work, they would join the ‘lagaradas’ to tread
grapes, dance through the night to the sound of a harmonica. Images of times gone by, described by Miguel Torga
in his novel Vindima, in which he describes the Douro
landscapes as “ a geological poem”.
Rituals might not be what they used to be, but grape harvesting is still one of the most important moments of the
year for the people from Douro. Each time grape harvesting is over; there is a joint celebration which gathers everyone around a roast goat or piglet. Bosses, basket bearers
and the ladies in the kitchen are offered flowers, and people dance as they used to. The traditional festive atmosp-

ao Pocinho, é possível ter uma pouco comum visão
ascendente das quintas e uma noção da magnitude
da paisagem de socalcos feita por mão humana. Como
lhe chamou o historiador Jaime Cortesão, trata-se d’
“o mais belo e doloroso monumento ao trabalho do
povo português”.
Pinhão is one the most suitable place to enjoy these
moments for its beauty and because it’s at the core of the
secular wine production history. Called “Douro’s myocardium” by the doctor and writer João Araújo Correia,
surrounded by historical farms, the village was an important commercial hub. The “rabelo” boats, carrying the
wine barrels that would set off to Oporto, sometimes in
tragic trips, were loaded at its harbors. It’s possible to have
an uncommon ascending view of the farms and a perception of the magnitude of the manmade terraced landscape, by taking a boat until Barca de Alva or by train until
Pocinho. As historian Jaime Cortesão said it’s “ the most
beautiful and painful monument to the work of the
Portuguese people”.

Bull Cliff Diving World
Series, a mais importante competição de saltos
para a água de grande
altura da atualidade. Os Açores foram o destino escolhido para esta estreia, com um cenário da mais pura
natureza a evocar as origens do desporto nascido há
mais de 200 anos no Havai.
Todas as atenções estiveram centradas no ilhéu de Vila
Franca do Campo, uma das jóias mais escondidas e bem
preservadas da ilha de São Miguel. O atual diretor desportivo do circuito e antigo atleta olímpico de saltos
para a água, Niki Stajkovic, confirmou no terreno as
características únicas do local, visão partilhada pelo
britânico Gary Hunt, atual detentor do título mundial,
que não escondeu o “grande entusiasmo de competir
nos Açores num cenário incrível”.
THE AZORES IN THE WORLD CIRCUIT The premiere of the Red Bull Cliff
Diving World Series in Portugal could have
not been better. The athletes and the organization fell for the charms of Vila Franca
do Campo Islet, off the coast of the Island
of São Miguel, standing at an impressive
platform height of 29 meters!
After having been held in France and Norway, Portugal
was chosen for the first time to be part of the Red Bull
Cliff Diving World Series’ circuit – today’s most important diving from high altitudes competition. The destination chosen for this premiere were the Azores, with a
scenery very close to nature, bringing to mind the origins
of this sport which started in Hawaii over 200 years ago.
All attentions were centered on the Vila Franca do Campo
Islet, one of the best hidden and well-preserved jewels

Todas as atenções estiveram centradas no ilhéu
de Vila Franca do Campo, uma das jóias mais
escondidas e bem preservadas
da ilha de São Miguel.
Foram 13 atletas no total (11 fixos e 2 wildcards) a
lutar por um lugar ao sol nos Açores, enfrentando uma
situação inédita no circuito: além dos saltos da plataforma montada a 28 metros de altura, tiveram a
oportunidade de realizar saltos com saída direta das
rochas! A altura foi ainda maior, com 29 metros a exigirem um esforço suplementar.
Durante a queda, a elite do cliff diving atinge uma
aceleração comparável à de um carro de F1 (0-100
Km/hora em menos de 3 segundos) e velocidades na
ordem dos 85 km/hora. O formato da competição
incluiu três rondas, passando apenas à final oito atletas. Com notas de 1 a 10, a avaliação do salto (saída
da plataforma, posição no ar e entrada na água) foi
garantida por um júri internacional de cinco elementos, onde se destacou o norte-americano Greg
Louganis, vencedor de quatro medalhas de ouro na
disciplina de saltos para a água dos Jogos Olímpicos.

13 athletes (11 permanent and 2 wildcards) competed for
a place in the sun in the Azores, experiencing an unheard of situation in the circuit: besides diving form the platform at 28 meters, the athletes had the opportunity of
diving straight off the rocks! The height was even bigger
and 29 meters involve a bigger effort.
During the fall, the elite of Cliff Diving reaches an acceleration which can be compared to a F1 car (0-100 km per
hour in less than 3 seconds) and speeds around 85 kms
per hour. The format of the competition has three rounds
with only eight athletes making it into the final. With scores form 1 to 10, the assessment of the diving (leaving the
platform, position in the air and entry in the water) was
guaranteed by an international jury composed by five members, one of which was the American diver Greg Lougaris
– who won four gold medals at the Olympic Games.
In the Azores, a slight difference gave back the first place

The phenomenon includes all of New England, but there
is no better place to observe this than the Northeast
Kingdom. The regal name, which officially designates
the northeast of Vermont, is due to the beauty of its landscape and was coined by a former governor who, when referring to the region, said that such a beautiful place only
compared to a kingdom. In Fall, this perception is even
more evident. More than 80 per cent of the territory is covered with forests, painted in different shades that spread
over mountains and valleys and only stops at the banks
of the rivers and lakes scattered in the landscape. The
region also offers visitors the possibility of taking part in
numerous activities throughout the year: hunting, fishing,
canoeing, and going for walks, among many others.

Newport, near the Canadian border. The town is scattered
around the banks of Lake Mephremagog, which in a native
Indian language means “beautiful waters”. At the center of
Northeast Kingdom, we can find St. Johnsbury. During the
year, it’s atypical American small town, with its wooden
houses and lawns in front of the porches. During the Fall,
the town gains a seasonal movement and beauty, by composing with an urban touch the scenery of endless multicolored forests. An unforgettable sight that attests Albert Camus’

evolved in what regards the wine production,

Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do
Carmo: At the heart of the Douro
wine region, this magnificent and
classical wine hotel offers from the
top of the slopes a mind-blowing
view of the river.
A pioneer farm as a wine hotel, near Pinhão,
it’s inserted at the top of the endless vineyard
slopes. It’s in the 18th century renovated
manor house, decorated in a traditional way,
that guests lodged. Next to it is the restored
chapel of the patron saint, which gives the
farm its name. This patron saint was the
saint to which people sailing the raging river
would ask for protection. Several belvederes
offer a panoramic view of the winding the
waters of the river, which can also be seen
from the swimming pool, surrounded by
vineyard, due to its splendid location. One
can contact nature by going for walks on
marked trails, by bird watching, cycling and
wine caching, a variation of geocaching. At
the wine restaurant Conceitus, you can taste
the farm’s best nectars accompanied by
tasting menus, cooked daily according to the
chef’s imagination and seasonal products,
some of which grown on the farm, in refined
meals which can last for hours.

Teve muita influência. Nascemos rodeados de mar, é a última fronteira. Desde
miúdos que aprendemos a olhar o mar
de várias maneiras. Depois da licenciatura em Física, quis escolher uma área
que pudesse ter aplicação nos Açores.
Foi uma forma de aproximação às ilhas?
Foi o corolário de uma carreira que tinha em mente.
Sempre gostei de investigação e tinha de fazer o doutoramento. Escolhi oceanografia, mas ponderei sismologia, vulcanologia, áreas que poderiam abrir alguma porta
nos Açores. Tinha outras de que gostava, como a cosmologia e a astrofísica.
O que faz um físico oceanógrafo?
Estuda a física do mar, que se relaciona com a circulação geral dos oceanos. Como se formam as correntes, qual o seu papel no transporte de calor, como inte-

Did having been born in Pico influence your decision in becoming an oceanographer?
It had a lot of influence. We are born surrounded by sea;
it’s the ultimate border. We learn to look at the sea in several ways since we are kids. After my degree in physics, I
wanted to choose an area which could be applied to the
Azores.
Was it a way to become closer to the islands?
It was a corollary of a career I had in mind. I’ve always
liked research, and I had to do my PhD. I chose oceanography, but I also thought about seismology, volcanology,
areas which could open some door in the Azores. I had
other areas of which I was fond, such as cosmology and
astrophysics.

ou a pé, fazer pouco consumo energético e por aí fora.

What does a physics oceanographer do?
He studies the physics of the sea which is related to the general circulation of the oceans. How currents are formed, what
their role in transporting heat is, how the ocean interacts
with the atmosphere and produces the climate, as we know
it. One of the areas which are studied is the interaction of
the oceans with global warming and the climatic changes.

Does your work make you more environmentally
aware?
I am working on a project of the University of the Azores
which has to do with the problem of climate changes in
the context of small islands. It has just begun and I think
it has a leg to stand on.
Desenvolveu algum projeto de investigação nos
Açores?
Participo num projeto da Universidade dos Açores, que
tem a ver com a problemática das mudanças climáticas
no contexto de ilhas pequenas. Está a começar agora e
acho que tem pernas para andar.
Tem algum simbolismo trabalhar para a NASA?
A NASA continua a ser uma instituição farol no âmbito da ciência feita no espaço. Tenho trabalhado para
várias missões, incluindo três atuais relacionadas com
os oceanos. São missões com tecnologia de ponta e que
nos trazem uma visão completamente diferente dos
oceanos.
Does working for NASA bear any symbolism?
NASA goes on being a pioneer institution in the filed of

Quando regressa, costuma subir à montanha do Pico?
É uma perspetiva única…
É mais do que isso. É uma visão universal ou planetária. Quando estamos no Pico, mesmo no cume, a
sensação mais avassaladora é não ver nada a não ser
céu e nuvens, que raramente temos. É essa sensação
do universal que guardo na memória da minha subida ao Pico.
You have a hobby: playing the guitar. Which type
of music do you like?
In the Azores I thought I was a good musician. When I
arrived in the USA, I saw there were street musicians who
played better than me [laughs]. So I took lessons with a
teacher at the Berkeley School of Music and I started playing jazz. I prefer the less intellectual jazz, the ones closer to the origins.
When you come back to the Azores do you generally climb Pico Mountain? It’s a unique view…
It’s more than that. It’s a universal and planetary view.
When we are in Pico, right at the top, the most overwhelming feeling is to see nothing but sky and clouds, something we rarely experience. It’s that feeling of universal that
I recall of my experience of climbing Pico.

Não sendo Portugal um país produtor de materiais gemológicos, foi com agrado que o artista reconheceu a beleza e as
potencialidades do basalto insular, quando aplicado em jóias
de prata e de ouro de tradição portuguesa. O basalto, uma
conhecida rocha vulcânica negra, não é, gemologicamente
falando, uma pedra preciosa, nem um material nobre tradicional. Todavia, no contexto em que Paulo do Vale o utiliza nas suas criações, passa a ter um valor quase mítico: é
um pouco dos Açores e de Portugal que ali está. Este terá
sido um forte argumento para a escolha de um colar da sua
autoria como presente de Estado à Rainha da Jordânia,
durante a vista oficial do Presidente da República àquele
país do Médio Oriente.

THE AZORES’ BLACK GOLD There is gold
in the Azores and it’s black! It’s not the gold and noble
metal, nor the increasingly rare hidrocarbonate! It’s
the Azorean basalt of unique jewels, created with the
quality seal of artist Paulo do Vale. Paulo do Vale found
his vocation as a jeweller at an early age. To the daily labour as a craftsman and the creative work in projects, he adds his gracious dedication
to the maintenance of the treasure of the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres
and the trade of official evaluator at the Casa da Moeda mint. As an
artist, he has had an uncommon route, despite his youth and origin. It
was, however, in 2004 that the big news arrived:
Paulo do Vale discovers the “black gold of the Azores”.
With Portugal not being a producer of gems, the artist was pleased to
see the beauty and potential of the basalt, when applied to silver and
gold jewels with Portuguese tradition. The basalt, a known black volcanic rock, is not a precious stone, nor a noble traditional material.
However, in the context in which Paulo do Vale uses it in his creations,
it almost has a mythical value: there is a bit of the Azores and Portugal
in there. This played a strong part in the selection of one of his necklaces as a State Gift to the Queen of Jordan, during the Portuguese President’s
visit to the Middle Eastern country.

O design, simplicidade e contemporaneidade destas jóias, que

não só nas sucessivas participações que tem registado no espaço
dedicado aos novos criadores na mais importante feira de joalharia nacional, a Portojóia, como também com prémios nacionais de grande relevo, como o primeiro prémio no concurso VIP
Jóias de 2006 e um honroso terceiro lugar no concurso de design
de joalharia do Museu da Presidência da República, em 2007,
tendo vencido em 2008 o concurso promovido pelo Museu

Working the jewels not only as fashion accessories, but also as symbolic
elements, sometimes even as talismans, the fact that in them is materialised a portion of the motherland confers on them a singular meaning of
great nobility, thus the expression “black gold”. Besides this interesting
symbolism, to the value of the pieces is added his manual labour, in the
oldest tradition of Azorean jewellery-making and their enrichment by the
application of other gems such as diamonds.
The design, simplicity and modernity of these unrepeatable pieces have earned recognition at various levels, not only in the successive participation at
spaces for new creation at Portugal’s most important jewellery fair Portjóia,
and with prizes such as 1st place in the VIP Jóias of 2006 contest and a
honorouble 3rd place in the jewellery design contest at the Portuguese
Presidency Museum in 2007. In 2008, he won the contest promoted by the
Berardo Museum beating 200 other designers, some of them international.

à arte e à cultura aquela artéria da capital da “Pérola
do Atlântico”. E os trabalhos multiplicaram-se, sendo
concretizados em entradas de lojas abandonadas
e/ou em espaços em ruínas que assumem agora uma
nova forma de estar no movimento que dá sentido
à cidade.

derelict or vacant buildings on Santa
Maria Street, Funchal, capital of the
Atlantic pearl, are part of the project “artE
pORtas abErtas”, an idea which appeared
in 2011. On the sixth of April 2011, Mark Milewski
started painting a door on Santa Maria Street, Funchal,
as part of the “artE pORtas abErtas” project created
by José Maria Montero.
The idea came from the wish to open that street, in the
capital of the Pearl of the Atlantic, to art and culture.
Several works were undertaken, and now vacant stores and/or spaces before in ruins, have a new aspect
which makes sense in the city.

no âmbito de um evento denominado PechaKucha,
tendo a “artE pORtas abertas” merecido
o melhor acolhimento.
Havia um objetivo: sensibilizar a população para
novas mensagens de rua, criando momentos culturais e artísticos resultantes de diversas formas de
expressão visual, como a pintura, a escultura, a
fotografia, o vídeo, a música e a escrita.
No fim de uma tarde de verão, com o sol a esconder-se na sombra da montanha, a rua de Santa Maria
adquire uma volúpia própria, com as suas portas abertas à cor e à forma de outros discursos capazes de conviver de perto com esplanadas e gente que passeia,
turistas e locais, como se agora houvesse outro motivo para abrir o apetite ao jantar.

the Madeira authorities in 2010, during an
event called PechaKucha. The project
““artE pORtas abErtas” was very well
received.
There was an objective: to raise the population’s awareness to the new street messages, creating cultural
and artistic moments resulting from various ways of
visual expression such as: painting, sculpture, photography, video, music, writing.
At the end of a summer’s day, with the Sun hiding
behind the shade of the mountain, Santa Maria Street
acquires an ecstasy of its own, with its doors open to
the color and shape of other expressions capable of
closely cohabiting with esplanades and people strolling, tourists and locals, as if now there were an added
reason to whet one’s appetite for dinner.
A close look will make us conclude that the several

is hardly to be found in other countries or regions.
Meat production in the Azores dates back to the time of the
settlement, in the mid 15th century. Since that period the quality of the pastures and the breeding of the animals have influenced the taste of the meat produced on the Azorean islands.
Its characteristics are intimately connected, on the one
hand, to the edapho-climatic conditions of the Archipelago,
which are favorable to the breeding of cattle, and on the
other hand, to the ancestral methods of feeding and conducting the cattle as the population of the Region do.

A partir de então, é-lhes fornecida uma alimentação tradicional, que as sujeita ao pastoreio rotacional, imposto pela tradicional divisão das parcelas com pedra vulcânica, designadas “cerrados”,

The manner in which such delicacy is produced is
mainly based on natural pastures, in a system of dairy
cows in which calves must be suckled until there are
at least three months old. As from then, they are fed
in a traditional way, with rotational grazing due to
the traditional way of delimiting the plots of land,
which are called “cerrados”, with volcanic stone. These
“cerrados” turn the rural landscape into patches at the
time of harvesting like authentic patchwork (it’s a real
ex-libris of the Azorean landscape), used not only to
divide property but also to protect the cattle’s cowsheds.

Delgada, não são indiferentes ao que se
passa em seu redor. Olhando as coisas, as
pessoas, as cores, os edifícios, o movimento das ruas, é como se tivessem a perceção
do que faz falta. Os lugares por onde passam deixam marca nas suas peças. Muito
do que os inspira vem das obras de arquitetos de prestigiadíssimo renome, como
Frank Gehry, Oscar Niemeyer, Frank Lloyd
Wright.
São otimistas por natureza, o que transborda nos seus trabalhos. Assumem a ambição
da criatividade. Trabalham cada jóia como
um elemento identitário.
Formados pela Escola Superior de Artes e
Design de Matosinhos, reconhecem que a
comunicação e o estudo lhes fornecem

Concurso Europeu de Escolas de Joalharia
em Glasgow, Escócia; e em 2009 mostrou
peças da sua autoria na Feira Iberiona, realizada em Barcelona, Espanha. 2011 trouxe-lhe a particular compensação de, entre
600 criadores e joalheiros, a nível mundial,
ter sido um dos 60 finalistas selecionados
para estar presente na Schmuck, em
Munique, Alemanha.
Não possuem meios industriais de produção. Fabricam de forma ponderada
como nos tempos antigos. Originalidade
em quantias limitadas é a regra que
seguem. Garantem ao ouro uma presença
de 80% na liga (19,2 quilates) e à prata fina
92,5%. Como se houvesse um equilíbrio
singular entre forma-substância-brilho no
metal feito precioso. Que a jóia se fez para
refulgir.

Ambos os avós maternos eram descendentes de
açorianos. É diretor, produtor e um dos mais
famosos e mais bem sucedidos atores
norte-americanos. Recebeu o Óscar para melhor

exportadora de telenovelas para o mundo. Ao
longo da sua carreira tem sido galardoada com
vários prémios, entre os quais dois Emmys, na

Imprensa, Melhores do Ano, o Prémio Contigo TV e os prémios
APCA e Festival de Cinema Brasileiro de Miami.
Lília Cabral was born in S. Paulo, Brazil, and is descendant
of an Italian father and a mother born in the island of S. Miguel. She
is a famous soap opera and Brazilian theater actress. She began her
career in theater with the play Happy New Year. She has been on Rede
Globo, the largest exporter of soap operas to the world, since 1984.
Throughout her career, Lília Cabral has been honored with several
awards, including two Emmys in the Best Actress category, the Brazil
Quality Award, the Media Award, the Best of the Year Award, the
Contigo TV Award, the APCA Award, and the Miami´s Brazilian
Film Festival Award.

A febre do ouro, alimentada
pela catadupa de notícias publicadas na imprensa
escrita, propagou-se rapidamente por todo o mundo
ocidental e homens das mais diversas nacionalidades
e condições sociais embarcaram rumo a essas terras
distantes em busca da fortuna que lhes não sorria na
terra natal. Os açorianos também marcaram presença
nesta corrida ao ouro e embora não constitua surpresa a sua integração no movimento que se dirigiu para
a Califórnia, atendendo a que muitos deles se encontravam já estabelecidos nos Estados Unidos da
América por via do seu envolvimento na atividade

ELDORADO In the mid 19th century the discovery of important auriferous deposits in California and
in Australia triggered a massive migration of thousands
of adventurers to these areas. The gold fever, based on the
news published in the press, quickly spread to all the eastern world, and men of the most diverse nationalities and
social backgrounds set out to those distant lands looking
for the fortune they couldn’t find in their homelands The
Azoreans also were part of this gold rush and, despite it
not coming as a surprise that they were part of the movement heading for California, since many of them had already settled in the United States of America due to their
connection with the whaling activity, it does comes as a
surprise those who decided to try their chance in distant
Australia.
On the 24th January 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold nuggets in a hilly area situated northeast of the

maioria só chegou ao seu destino em 1849, passando
à História com o nome de “Forty-niners”. Entre os 80
mil pioneiros que se estima terem chegado à Califórnia
nesse ano, destaca-se a figura do açoriano Charles
Peters (1825-1921), um faialense que, como seria de
esperar, chegou à cidade mineira de Sacramento a
bordo de uma barca baleeira, e cuja autobiografia foi

did not exist yet, nor did railways crossing the American
continent, the journey by sea to California around Cape
Horn could last eight to ten months, therefore most of them
only arrived at their destination in 1849, going down in
History by the name “Forty-niners”. Among the 80,000
pioneers thought to have arrived in that year, the name
of the Azorean Charles Peters stands out (1825-1921),
a native of Faial who, as ne would expect, arrived at the
mining city of Sacramento aboard a whaling boat. His

Os açorianos também marcaram presença nesta
corrida ao ouro e embora não constitua surpresa a sua
integração no movimento que se dirigiu para a Califórnia,
... outro tanto não se poderá dizer daqueles que decidiram
tentar a sua sorte na remota Austrália.

Já no caso da Austrália a descoberta do ouro teve lugar
em 1851 e deu início a um fluxo migratório das Ilhas
Britânicas (sobretudo da Irlanda) e da China que, no
espaço de uma década, triplicou a população de Victoria,
cuja capital, Melbourne, se viria a tornar a segunda
maior cidade do Império Britânico. No meio desse caudal de milhares de emigrantes que buscavam fortuna
do outro lado do mundo, assinala-se a presença de um
grupo de dezenas de açorianos – todos naturais da ilha
de S. Miguel, aquela que tinha contactos comerciais e
marítimos mais regulares com as Ilhas Britânicas – que
chegam a Port-Philip em novembro de 1853, após uma
viagem de três meses e meio, feita a bordo da escuna
inglesa “Water Lilly”, especialmente fretada para o efeito por uma sociedade que tinha como principal acionista Simplício Gago da Câmara (1808-1888), proprietário e membro de uma família abastada que, arriscando alguns contos de reis nesta ambiciosa expedição, tentou sem sucesso a sua sorte nas minas de ouro australianas, tendo regressado aos Açores poucos anos depois.
Alguns mestres e operários especializados que integravam a referida sociedade acabaram por se fixar na
Austrália, muitos deles exercendo com proveito as suas
antigas profissões na trepidante cidade de Melbourne,
como foi o caso de Jacinto António dos Reis.

tripled the population of Victoria, whose capital Melbourne
would become the second largest of the British Empire.
Amidst this flow of emigrants in search of fortune on the
other side of the world, we may point out the presence of
dozens of Azoreans – all from São Miguel Island, the island
which had more regular commercial and maritime contacts
with the British Isles – who arrived at Port-Philip in
November 1853, after a three and a half month journey aboard the English schooner “Water Lilly”, specially freighted
for this purpose by a company whose main shareholder was
Simplício Gago da Câmara (1808-1888), owner and member of a wealthy family who, risking a large sum of money
on this ambitious expedition, tried his luck with no success the Australian gold mines, having returned to the Azores
some years later. Some masters and specialized workers were
part of the afore mentioned company, and they ended up
settling in Australia, many of them having gone back to their
original professions successfully in the bustling city of
Melbourne, as was the case of Jacinto António dos Reis.
The Azoreans also were part of this gold rush
and, despite it not coming as a surprise that
they were part of the movement heading for
California,.. it does comes as a surprise those
who decided to try their chance in distant
Australia

er nascido aqui e não ali dá a
cada um de nós um princípio de
identidade. Mais tarde vem o
nome. Até o percebermos como
nosso, como um privado primeiro sinal de identidade, ou marca
que nos distingue dos outros,
aprendemos imensas história de
família, e sempre nós no centro de cada episódio.
“Tu, quando vivíamos lá por aquelas fragas, tinhas
o quê, uns três anitos?, pregaste-nos cá um de sassossego logo que gatinhaste por ali abaixo em
direcção ao mar revolto, Virgem Maria!” E sempre
assim. As histórias, que mais tarde, ao longo da
vida até morrermos, filtramos, mercê de tantas contingências, nos vão fazendo aquilo que somos – e
nunca num momento desse devir somos iguais a
outro momento, que se siga ou já tenha existido.
Quer isto dizer que aquele primeiro momento e
local de nascimento e mais as histórias de que fomos
sendo protagonistas ou actores secundários, tudo
isso só existe porque, momento a momento da
nossa vida, aceitamos uns factos, recusamos outros,
transformamos tudo a nosso bel-prazer (e forçadamente, o que não é, em rigor, a mesma coisa).

us a sense of identity. Later comes the name. Until we
understand it as ours, as the first private sign of identity, or something which tells us apart from others, we
get to know many family stories and we are always the
protagonists of each episode. “You, when we were living
near those cliffs, you were what, three? You scared us
when you started crawling down in the direction of
the raging sea, Jesus!” And it’s always the same. The
stories which, later on throughout our life and until the
day we die, we filter due to many contingencies, and
which make us what we are – and no moment of our
existence is the same as any other moment we might
have experienced or are still going to experience. This
means that that first moment and our birthplace and
many more stories in which we had the main part or
played a secondary part, all this only exists because
in each moment of our life we accept some facts, reject
others, we transform everything as it pleases us (and
forcibly, which is not strictly speaking, the same thing).
I ornamented the words in the possible simplest manner, but I knew my effort would be in vain. So the
words remained in my head, so to speak.

Então, afinal, o homem precisou desse tempo todo
para saber bem onde nasceu, com quem se fez, que vida levou,
e como tudo isso lhe ficou na alma?
Adornei as palavras da forma mais simples de que
fui capaz, mas eu sabia que o esforço seria em vão.
De maneira que as palavras ficaram na cabeça, que
é como quem diz.

The writer Nemésio went back to his Terceira Island
thirty years after he departed to the Mainland. In 1946,
he stayed for a short period, but in 1955 he stayed for
a longer period. He came back, as he said, to “sort
in Portugal and in
Brazil, published in
Spain, Mozambique
and Brazil and
translated into
Spanish and French.
He was responsible
together with Urbano
Bettencourt for the
Biblioteca Açoriana
collection. He was
responsible as well,
with Sara Santos, for
the literary magazine
Magma (2005-2009).
He regularly writes in
the Azorean press. He
is the literary director
of Companhia das
Ilhas.
He was born in Lisbon
in 1954. He has been
living on Pico Island
since 2005.

O mestre Nemésio regressou à sua ilha Terceira 30
anos depois de ter rumado ao Continente. Em 1946,
a estadia foi curta, mais prolongada a de 1955.
Voltou, dizia, para se «resolver por escrito». Mas
poderia alguém ter dúvidas que o homem, já em
idade de gente, ainda havia de lhe sobrar passado
por construir? Sobrava, sim senhora. Os seus dois
regressos foram para volver-se a olhar para dentro,
mergulhar no fundo de si mesmo. «O passado vale
duas vezes o presente... Uma – porque vale o que
foi, exactamente quando era; outra – porque torna
a valer esse valor quando o puxamos à memória,
agora que não é precisamente senão aquilo que
foi.» Belas palavras estas as da herança por ele lavrada no Corsário das Ilhas, livro de memórias, de
viagens (interiores, disse alguém), ou, digo eu, um
jogo bem ao jeito dele, o de deixar-se ir construindo-se, palavra por palavra, à frente dos nossos olhos
espantados. “Então, afinal, o homem precisou desse
tempo todo para saber bem onde nasceu, com quem
se fez, que vida levou, e como tudo isso lhe ficou
na alma?” Pois, se calhar… Aquele seu «Se bem me
lembro» foi fina ironia, hem?
“Credo em cruz, home’, o que aí vai de confusões!
Sou açoriana da Ponta da Ilha do Pico, não se vê
logo? Isso é coisa malina de teres estado tanto tempo
lá fora a estudar.” “Mas olhe que o Nemésio…”
“Deixa-te disso e vai-te à deita que já é muito tarde,
vê lá se já te esqueceste que amanhã é o teu avô que
leva a Coroa!”
O autor escreve de acordo com a antiga ortografia.

that this man, as an adult, still had a past to build?
He indeed had. His two homecomings were to look
inside himself, to delve in his own self. “The past is
worth twice the present…For one reason – because it
is worth what it was, exactly when it was; the other
reason being – because that value is worthy when we
bring it back to our memory, now that it is nothing but
what it really was.” Beautiful words written by Nemésio
in his book “Corsário das Ilhas”, a memoir of travels
(of interior travels as someone called them), or, as I say,
a style of his own, unveiling himself little by little
before our astonished eyes. “So, in the end, he needed
all this time to find out well where he had been born,
who were the people who were important for his development, what his life had been like, and how all this
had lingered in his soul?” Well, maybe…His “If I
recall” was a subtle irony, huh?
