Fábio Ramos: Mente Cyborg

Especializado em inteligência artificial, o paulista Fábio Ramos passa seu dia no meio de robôs:
aviões e carros automatizados entre outras tecnologias. Na busca por criar soluções para
melhorar a vida das pessoas e das empresas, o engenheiro de 33 anos, chegou a Sydney em 2003
para um doutorado e desde 2007 chefia uma equipe internacional altamente qualificada.
FP - Conte um pouco sua história
pessoal e profissional e como você
chegou à Austrália?
Eu me formei em Engenharia Mecatrônica pela POLI/USP no final de
2000. Fiz mestrado também na USP
em inteligência artificial. Em 2003, vim
para a Austrália para fazer meu doutorado em robótica. Em 2007, ganhei um
“Fellowship” do governo da Austrália
para permanecer aqui e iniciar meu próprio grupo de pesquisa. Hoje, oriento
oito alunos de doutorado e quatro pósdoutorandos. Também recebo alunos de
doutorado de outras dez universidades
ao redor do mundo que vem passar seis
meses no meu grupo de pesquisa.
FP - Quais são seus principais projetos?
Eu trabalho em várias áreas de robótica
e aprendizado de máquinas. Na indústria
de mineração, estamos desenvolvendo a
primeira mina totalmente autônoma do
mundo. Isso envolve a automatização de
caminhões, escavadeiras, furadeiras e
outras máquinas de grande porte. A ideia
é ter uma mina totalmente autônoma
em 10 anos. Também trabalho com o desenvolvimento de robôs para medicina,
particularmente na recuperação de pacientes que sofreram derrame ou algum
outro problema cerebral. Recentemente
também começamos a estudar aplicativos para telefones celulares que ajudem
pacientes com demência. Esses aplicativos tentam reconhecer a atividade que a
pessoa está executando e avisam sobre
possíveis perigos que o paciente tenha
esquecido. Por exemplo, eles detectam
que a pessoa está cozinhando e lembram
a pessoa de desligar o fogão ou fechar a
torneira. Também pretendemos ajudar
o idoso a retornar para casa automaticamente se ele por ventura esquecer o caminho; situação responsável por muitas
mortes atualmente. FP - O carro automático é viável? Em
quanto tempo ele pode ser aplicável

Um mundo totalmente automatizado talvez não seja o que realmente queremos
ou precisamos. Algumas tarefas precisam ser realizadas por seres humanos, seja por
razões psicológicas, ou pela capacidade de criação e adaptação que temos.
e quais as necessidades tecnológicas, estruturais e ambientais?
O carro automático é certamente viável. Tivemos muitos avanços nessa área
nos últimos anos. A idea é o desenvolvimento de um carro automático que
consiga dirigir sozinho pelas cidades
sem precisar modificar a infra-estrutura
atual, ou seja, sem a necessidade de ter
avenidas especiais, e interagindo com
outros carros, automáticos ou não. A
tecnologia para que isso ocorra deve estar disponível nos próximos cinco a dez
anos. O grande desafio será minimizar
o custo desses veículos já que eles precisam de sensores caros que somados
custariam mais de 100 mil dólares nos
dias atuais. pela capacidade de criação e adaptação
que temos. Os robôs podem nos ajudar
bastante em atividades perigosas ou que
exigem muito esforço, entretanto existem tarefas, que dificilmente, poderão
executar em um futuro próximo. Ainda
não consigo imaginar um robô professor, psicólogo, médico, jornalista, e muitos outros. Todas essas profissões envolvem a criatividade, sensibilidade e uma
análise ampla dos problemas/situações.
Acho que apenas o cérebro humano consegue reunir essas habilidades.
FP - Em relação aos Robôs, qual será
o futuro? Como você vÊ a relação
máquinas/humanos?
A Austrália investe bastante na tecnologia de mineração. Os projetos que
temos aqui são únicos no mundo e irão
certamente dar uma vantagem competitiva para a indústria local no futuro. No
momento estamos automatizando uma
mina de ferro (superfície), no Oeste dos
país. Mais do que criando caminhões
autônomos, escavadeiras autônomas
ou furadeiras autônomas, estamos desenvolvendo a infra-estrutura necessária para que todas essas máquinas se
comuniquem, integrem a informação e
ofereçam uma solução global para a indústria.
Os robôs estarão mais e mais presentes na sociedade. Hoje temos robôs
que aspiram o pó de casa, robôs que
limpam a piscina, robôs que nos guiam
em museus, etc. No futuro teremos robôs cadeira-de-rodas, robôs para ajudar
cegos, entre outros. Entretanto, penso
que o impacto da robótica será maior na
indústria. Na mineração, a tecnologia
que estamos criando vai revolucionar o
setor e evitar acidentes com pessoas em
minas subterrâneas e de superfície. Na
agricultura e pecuária, máquinas inteligente ajudarão a melhorar a produção,
tornando-a mais eficiente e reduzindo o
uso de recursos naturais. Na saúde, robôs ajudarão pessoas idosas a recuperar
a independência e a auto-estima. FP - Quais são os caminhos para um
mundo totalmente automatizado?
Um mundo totalmente automatizado
talvez não seja o que realmente queremos ou precisamos. Algumas tarefas
precisam ser realizadas por seres humanos, seja por razões psicológicas, ou

Specializing in artificial intelligence, Fabio Ramos from Sao Paulo spends his days
amongst robots, airplanes, cars and other automated technologies. In seeking to
create solutions to improve the lives of individuals and businesses,the 33 year-old
engineer arrived in Sydney in 2003 for a doctorate and since 2007 he has lead a
highly qualified international team.
FP - Tell us your personal and professional history and how you came to
Australia?
I graduated in Mechatronics Engineering from
POLI/USP in late 2000. I did my masters also at
USP in artificial intelligence. In 2003, I came to
Australia to do my doctorate in robotics. In 2007,
I received a Fellowship from the Australian government to stay here and start my own research
group.Today I help guide eight doctoral students
and four postdoctoral students. I also receive doctoral students from ten other universities around
the world who spend six months in my research
group.
FP - What are your major projects?
I work in various areas of robotics and machine
understanding. In the mining industry, we are
developing the first fully autonomous mine in the
world.This involves the automation of trucks, bulldozers, drills and other large machines.The idea is
to have a fully autonomous mine in 10 years. I also
work with the development of robots in medicine,
particularly in the recovery of stroke patients or
other brain problems. Recently we have also begun
to study applications for mobile phones that help
patients with dementia.These applications attempt
to recognize the activity that person is doing and
warns about possible dangers that the patient
has forgotten. For example, it can detect that the
person is cooking and remind he or she to turn off
the stove or turn off the faucet.We also intend to
help the elderly to return home should he or she
forget which way to go.This currently is a situation
that has led to many deaths.
FP – Is the automatic car is feasible? How
long will it be until it can be used and
what type of technology, structure and
environment will it need?
The automatic car is certainly feasible.We had
many advances in this area in recent years.The
idea is to develop a robotic car that can drive
through the city without having to modify the
existing infrastructure, i.e. without the need to have
special avenues and interaction with other cars,
automatic or not.The technology for this to occur
should be available within the next 5-10 years.The
big challenge will be to minimize the cost of these
vehicles because they need expensive sensors that
together would cost more than 100,000 dollars in
today’s money.
FP – What is the future for robots? What
do you THINK about the robot human
relationship?
Robots will become more and more present

in society.Today we have robots that vacuum the
house, robots that clean the pool, robots that guide
us in museums, etc. In the future, robots will have,
amongst others, wheelchair robots to help the
blind. However, I think the impact will be greater in
industry. In mining, we are creating technology that
will revolutionize the industry and prevent injury to
people in underground mines and on the surface.
In agriculture and livestock, intelligent machines
will help improve production, making it more efficient and reducing the use of natural resources.
In medicine, robots will help the elderly regain their
independence and self-esteem.
FP - What are the plans to a fully automated world?
A completely automated world may not be
what we really want or need. Some tasks must
be performed by humans, either for psychological
reasons or due to the ability to create and adapt
that we have. Robots can help us greatly in dangerous activities or activities that require a lot of
effort, however there are tasks which I can hardly
see them doing in the near future. I still can not
imagine a robot being a teacher, psychologist, doctor, journalist and many other occupations. All of
these occupations involve creativity, sensitivity and
a broad analysis of problems and situations. I think
that only the human brain has these skills.
FP - How do you view the technology
used in mining in Australia? What are
the key projects?
Australia invests heavily in mining technology.
The projects that we have here are globally unique
and will surely give a competitive advantage to
local industry in the future. At present we are automating an iron mine (surface) in the western part
of the country. In addition to creating autonomous
trucks, excavators and drills, we are developing the
necessary infrastructure for all of these machines
to communicate and integrate information in order
to provide a global solution for the industry.
FP - Is Australia a good place to learn
about robotics?
My department is one of the largest in the
world when it comes to robotics.We have about
150 people which include teachers, post-docs, doctoral students and engineers working on dozens of
projects with direct application in the industry and
society.The University of Sydney offers a robotics
engineering course for students interested in getting started in robotics.

dezembro.
Ceia: Muitos australianos desfrutam de
um tradicional peru assado, pato, galinha
ou presunto assado. Porém, atualmente o
mais comum são os churrascos com carnes
e frutos do mar. Camarões, caranguejos
e saladas também são muito populares.
Australianos comem mais frutos do mar na
época do Natal do que em qualquer outra
época do ano.
Sobremesas: Para sobremesas, bolos de
Natal com base nos bolos de frutas e pudins
de Natal, além da tradicional Pavlova.

Local: Normalmente as comemorações
acontecem nos parques ou praias durante
o dia. Muitos australianos também viajam
nesse período.
A família se reúne e espera pela meia-noite, a chegada do dia 25.
Ceia: Na ceia do brasileiro a mesa é normalmente farta e com
grande variedade de alimentos. Além disso, o evento é formal
com mesa bem posta e arrumada para a ocasião. Na mesa
não pode faltar: Peru, Leitão, Arroz, Farofa, Castanhas, Nozes,
Salada Tropical, Frutas (em especial as exclusivas do território
brasileiro), Bolinhos de Bacalhau e muito mais.
Sobremesa: As sobremesas normalmente são tortas de
nozes, creme de ovos e pudim de claras.
Pensando em estudo

Decoração: As árvores são na grande
maioria pinheiros naturais que permanecem
em vasos durante o restante do ano. Além
disso, os australianos utilizam flores típicas
de Natal.
Presentes: Muitos australianos
compram os presentes apenas no dia 26 de
dezembro, o chamado Boxing Day, quando
as lojas têm promoções excelentes.

Primeiro Passo: Educadamente peça para entrar em contato com um
advogado. Você tem o direito de ter um advogado presente durante
qualquer interrogatório, para aconselhá-lo.
Eu tenho que responder a polícia se estiver preso?
Geralmente você tem o direito de se manter calado. Mas se a razão de
sua detenção involver um acidente de carro, você é obrigado a informar
seu nome, endereço e os particulares do evento à polícia.
A polícia deve lhe avisar, antes do interrogatório, que você não é
obrigado a responder nehuma pergunta, mas qualquer resposta pode
ser usada como evidência no julgamento. A polícia pode solicitar um interrogatório gravado (em vídeo ou áudio). Informe seu nome, endereço
e data de nascimento, mas não responda nenhuma outra pergunta sem
a presença de seu advogado. Não assine nenhum documento a não ser
que seja sobre a sua fiança!
Eu tenho que dar minhas impressões digitais ou aceitar ser fotografado?
Sim. A polícia pode tirar suas impressões digitais ou lhe fotografar para
fim de identificação. Se você for absolvido do delito, você pode requerer
que suas impressões digitais e fotos sejam destruídas.
Por quanto tempo tenho que permanecer preso?

lawyer present while you are being questioned to
give you advice.
Do I have to answer questions if I am
under arrest?
In general you have a right to silence. However,
if the arrest concerns a motor vehicle, you are
required to give your name and address and
particulars of the incident to the police.
Police should caution you, before questioning,
that no questions need be answered but that
any answer given may be used in evidence.The
police may want you to answer questions in what
is known as a “record of interview”.This may be
recorded on video and audio tape. Give the police
your name, address and date of birth, but do not
answer any other questions unless you have your
solicitor present. Do not sign any document other
than a bail form!
Do I have to submit to being fingerprinted or photographed?
Yes.The police may take your fingerprints and
photographs of you for the purpose of identification. If you are subsequently acquitted or the
charges against you are dropped, you may ask that
your fingerprints and photographs be destroyed.
How long do I have to stay in custody?
Following arrest, the police may detain you for
an initial period of up to four hours to conduct
investigations. An application can be made to allow
an extension of up to a further eight hours. Following this, you must either be charged or released.
If you are charged, you will usually be released
on bail, with or without conditions. If you are
refused bail, or cannot meet the conditions set, you
must be brought as soon as practicable before a
court where you can apply for bail.
When can I get bail?
Usually after arrest and charging at a police
station.You may be refused bail if:
- you are considered to be a risk to the protection
of the alleged victim(s), or the community
- you have previously failed to comply with a bail
undertaking you committed an offence while on
bail, parole, probation, or a good behaviour bond
- the offence you have been charged with is serious, or you are considered to be a flight risk.
What happens if I don’t comply with
bail conditions?
You can be arrested by the police for breaching
your bail and brought before a court.
How can a solicitor help me?
You should try to contact a solicitor if you are
arrested. He or she will:
- attend the police station with you,
- advise you of your rights,
- explain the alternatives to you,
- make a bail application for you,
- represent you in court.

á pouco tempo escrevi sobre as maravilhas do
iPhone 4, agora é a hora de virar o jogo, e falar
sobre o Windows Phone 7 (WP7). Será que a
tentativa da Microsoft de entrar no mercado da telefonia
celular vai conseguir fazer com que você deixe de lado o
seu amado iPhone?
O Windows Phone vem sendo desenvolvido há algum
tempo, e estava sendo esperado anciosamente pelos seus
entusiastas. O WP7 já parece incrível a partir do momento que é ligado. Tudo é bonito e colorido, até mesmo
a tela de segurança que mostra data, hora, ligações
perdidas, novas mensagens e o seu próximo compromisso. Quando você desliza a tela para cima, você encontra
blocos animados e hubs, grandes o bastante para mostrar
textos, gráficos e fotos, e também para aceitar o toque do
seu dedão.
Os blocos animados são grandes botões quadrados
com informações (incluido imagens) que podem ser atualizados a qualquer momento. A cor dos blocos é definida
pelo usuário. Como diz a Microsoft: “mude o plano de
fundo do seu celular e a sua cor personalizada de acordo

Ele tem uma navegação incrível e como um usuário do

Not long ago I wrote about Apple’s iPhone 4 and how cool it is, now is the time to go to
the other side of the coin and talk about Windows Phone 7 (WP7). Does the newest Microsoft attempt of getting into the Mobile phones worth putting away your beloved iPhone?
Windows Phone has been in development for some time and largely expected by its
enthusiasts. WP7 looks good from the moment you turn it on. Everything is beautiful and
colourful, even the useful lock screen that shows date, time, notifications for missed calls,
new messages and your next appointment. Once you slide it up, live tiles and hubs are presented they are big enough to show text, graphics, and photos and to hit with your thumb.
Live tiles are big square buttons with information (including pictures) being updated live,
the tiles base colour is defined by the user when choosing the accent colour, as Microsoft
says “change your phone’s background and accent colour to suit your mood today, this
week or all month”. Other than the live tiles the hub brings everything together, and from
the box there are: People Hub that brings your contacts and Facebook together, Pictures
Hub & Camera making effortless the process from pocket to picture to Facebook, Music +
Video Hub that’s a experience that only Microsoft Zune users could describe till now, Office
Hub bringing a office suite in your pocket that actually works, Games Hub let you play
games with your Xbox LIVE and Marketplace Hub an applications and games superstore.
It is a reset button, throwing out years of features and applications designed for its predecessor. “Everything” has been build from the ground; WP7 aims the touching experience
and not the awkward stylus, it uses big and shiny buttons instead of small text menus and
let the user take advantage of social networks much better than try to collected information of the people you know one by one. It has an amazing navigation experience and as a
iPhone user for the last 2 years I made my choice, I swap to Windows Phone 7.

O festival é realizado em um parque de 500 acres localizado na
Sunshine Coast Hinterland, pouco mais de uma hora ao norte de

Cantando, contando e fazendo história
O
que faz a Música Brasileira ser internacionalmente reconhecida
como uma das mais originais do mundo? Qual elemento
unifica e caracteriza a nossa identidade cultural? Ginga, molejo,
malemolência; palavras sinônimas que definem a alma brasileira; nosso
jeito de ser, viver e criar. Seja na capoeira, samba, baião, maracatu ou
futebol; seja no nosso jogo de cintura e atitude criativa perante a vida; ou
seja até mesmo, no nosso jeito de falar e andar, imortalizados pela “Garota
de Ipanema - com seu doce balanço a caminho do mar”. A ginga, essa
capacidade brasileira de se readaptar e se recriar constantemente, está
presente em tudo o que nos destaca. É a nossa marca registrada.
Em um país onde cultura e história estão tão intimamente amalgamadas,
fica difícil de saber se é a vida que inspira a arte ou a arte que inspira a vida.
Mas o fato é que se pode tanto entender a nossa música através da nossa
história, quanto a nossa história através da nossa música.

Tudo começa na Bahia, com a chegada de Cabral em 1500, a fundação de
Salvador, primeira capital do Brasil em 1549 e no ano seguinte, a chegada
dos primeiros escravos africanos, trazendo com eles, seus ritmos, crenças,
tambores e danças de roda, como a sensual umbigada, que ao longo de
quatro séculos foi sendo ao mesmo tempo, repassada, misturada e recriada
para poder eventualmente sair da senzala e ser assimilada com outros
nomes e formas pela sociedade.
Em 1763, a capital é transferida para o Rio de Janeiro e apartir de 1808
com a mudança da Corte Imperial Portuguesa ao Brasil, muitos escravos são
obrigados a aprender a tocar instrumentos e música europeia para alegrar
as festas da nobreza. Desse sincretismo cultural, nasceram os precursores do
samba. O lundu foi o primeiro estilo de música negra aceito pela sociedade
brasileira em torno de 1880. Depois de passar um século sendo misturado a
Modinha de influência europeia, ganhou um carácter mais brando, chamado
Lundu-canção que foi popularizado pelo compositor e comediante Xisto
Bahia. Assim também nasceu o maxixe, a primeira dança urbana brasileira;
mistura de lundu, polka e habanera cubana. A partir da mesma época,
abrasileirando a forma de tocar instrumentos e estilos como polkas,
schottisch e tangos; surgiu também o choro.
Com o fim da escravidão em 1888, muitos ex-escravos vão tentar a sorte
na capital, imigrando para o centro do Rio, aos redores da Praça Onze, onde
se reúnem nas casas das “tias baianas”, para tocar lundus, marchas, choros,
maxixes e batuques. Nessas reuniões, o samba vai sendo inventado. A
canção “Pelo Telefone” criada coletivamente na casa da famosa baiana “Tia
Ciata”, lançada em 1917, é considerada o marco do gênero. De lá pra cá,
várias evoluções e variações têm surgido, tais como samba enredo, partido
alto, pagode, samba canção, bossa nova, samba reggae, samba funk e samba
rock. O mesmo processo criativo acontece também com outros ritmos
brasileiros como o baião, xote, frevo e maracatu.

What makes the Brazilian music to be internationally recognized as one of the most unique in the
world? What elements unify and characterize our
cultural identity? Ginga, molejo, malemolência: these
are synonymous words that define the Brazilian soul
and our way of being, living and creating. Be it in our
capoeira, samba, baiao, maracatu or soccer. Be it in
our style, our creative attitude towards life, or even
the way we talk and walk, immortalized by The Girl
from Ipanema – “with her sweet style and walk on
the beach”.The ginga and the Brazilian ability to readjust and constantly rebuild.This is what separates
us. It is our trademark.
In a country where culture and history are so
closely interrelated, it is difficult to know whether it
is life that inspires art or art that inspires life. But
the fact is that you can both understand our music
throughout our history, as our history through our
music.
Everything started in Bahia, with the arrival of

In 1763, the capital was transferred to Rio de
Janeiro and from 1808 with the change of the
Portuguese Imperial Court of Brazil, many slaves
were forced to learn to play instruments and
European music to brighten up the festivities of the
nobles. It was that cultural syncretism that allowed
samba to be born. Lundu was the first style of
black music accepted by Brazilian society in the
1880s. After spending a century of being mixed with
European Balads influence, it gained a more gentle
Lundu characteristic song that was popularized by
the composer and comedian, Xisto Bahia. So too
was born maxixe, the first Brazilian urban dance,
blending of lundu, polka and Cuba habanera. From
that same period, the Brazilian way on how to play
instruments and styles such as polkas, tangos and
schottisch; choro (cry) also arose.
With the end of slavery in 1888, many former
slaves tried their luck in the capital, immigrating to
the center of Rio to the outskirts of the Praca Onze,
where they met in the homes of “aunties of Bahia”
to play lundus, marches, choros , maxixes and drumming. At these meetings, the samba was being invented. The song “Pelo Telefone” created collectively
in the home of the famous Bahian “Aunt Ciata”
launched in 1917, is considered as the landmark of
the genre. Since then, several changes and variations
have emerged, such as samba enredo, partido alto,
pagode, samba cancao, bossa nova, samba reggae,
samba, funk and samba rock.The same creative
process also occured with other Brazilian rhythms
such as the ballad, Xote, Frevo and Maracatu.
This capacity continues to absorb new influences,
mix them with their own roots and return to the
world a unique artistic expression which is what
makes Brazilian music one of the most respected
and fascinating in the world.Through it, we continue
singing, counting and making our history.

Marcio Lemos has travelled the world in order
to achieve his dream of becoming a professional
fighter and is living proof that Brazilians never
ever quit.
Marcio Lemos atravessou o mundo para conquistar
seu sonho de ser um lutador profissional e é a prova
viva de que brasileiros não desistem nunca.
Anderson Marcelo da Silva Lemos, 31, was born in Porto
Alegre and had a childhood that was surrounded by love and
affection from his parents and two sisters. But the boy loved
to get into trouble. “I always liked a challenge. For me it was
not enough to just get into trouble with the boys from school; I
had to always be with the older boys who were strong because
I thought that if I could beat the biggest, my victory would be
even more glorious”, he explains.
It was through this ease of getting into trouble that Marcio
began practicing martial arts. “I started with Capoeira which
I trained for six years; however after I did my first training
session in Jiu Jitsu, I discovered that the science of this martial
art allowed the weakest - with the help of the combination of
movements - be able to defeat the strongest. I discovered that
this sport was everything I had searched for my entire childhood
and confused adolescence,” he concludes.
With the discipline of Jiu Jitsu behind him, Marcio tamed his
rebellious nature and began competing professionally. “I liked
the atmosphere of the competitions and the adrenaline flowing
through my veins.” After dozens of Jiu Jitsu championships,
Marcio decided he wanted something more challenging and
so decided to start fighting MMA (Mixed Martial Art), or Vale
Tudo as it is known in Brazil. He made his debut in Australia on
March 23, 2005, however the gaucho had to face many battles
on the road before that day arrived.
“Deixei o Brasil rumo a Nova Zelândia, deixando família, amigos e emprego e
cheguei em um novo país com $350 na carteira, um cartão de crédito vencido e
uma mochila nas costas com 15kg de roupa. Não sabia falar uma palavra em inglês,
trabalhei na construção civil de servente, muitas vezes no inverno a temperatura
era em torno de -5 graus. Era tudo branco de neve ao redor. Porém nunca desisti
do meu maior sonho, que era viver da luta e montar minha academia de Jiu Jitsu”,
conta Marcio.
A
nderson Marcio da Silva Lemos, 31 anos, nasceu em Porto
Alegre e teve uma infância cercada de amor e carinho dos
pais e das duas irmãs. Mas o menino adorava se meter em
confusões. “Sempre gostei de desafio, para mim não bastava
apenas arrumar encrenca com os garotos da escola, tinha que ser sempre
com os garotos mais velhos e fortes, porque eu pensava que se conseguisse ganhar do maior, minha vitória seria ainda mais gloriosa”, conta.
Foi por causa desta facilidade de arrumar confusão que Marcio começou a praticar artes marcias. “Comecei pela capoeira que treinei por seis
anos, mas depois que fiz meu primeiro treino de Jiu Jitsu, e descobri que
a ciência desta arte marcial era que o mais fraco, com a ajuda de chaves e

alavancas usadas em uma combinação de movimentos, poderia vencer o
mais forte, descobri neste esporte tudo o que eu tinha procurado durante toda minha infância e adolescência de confusões”, conclui.
Com a disciplina do Jiu Jitsu, Marcio conseguiu domar toda a sua rebeldia e começou a competir profissionalmente. “Sempre gostei do clima
das competições, a adrenalina correndo em suas veias.” Após dezenas
de campeonatos de Jiu Jitsu, o lutador resolveu que queria algo mais desafiador e por isso começou a lutar MMA (Mixed Martial Art) ou o Vale
Tudo, como é conhecido no Brasil. Fazendo sua estreia na Austrália no
dia 23 de março de 2005. Mas antes disso o gaúcho teve que enfrentar
muitas batalhas pelo caminho.
O lutador deixou a Nova Zelândia pois não conseguiu se adaptar ao clima e resolveu buscar na Austrália a realização do seu sonho. “Como o MMA é um esporte
novo aqui na Austrália, viver apenas de lutas ainda é um pouco complicado. Apesar de lutar em eventos relativamente grandes, exibidos na televisão pela Foxtel, o
esporte ainda esta evoluindo. Depois de cinco anos na Austrália já consegui abrir
a minha academia de Jiu-Jitsu e com o apoio do meu patrocinador consigo levar a
vida que sempre sonhei”, conta.
A Gracie Barra Hornsby, acadêmia de Jiu Jitsu surgiu em uma parceria com
um conterrâneo que Marcio conheceu aqui na Austrália. “Inauguramos nossa
academia em março deste ano e já estamos com 50 alunos”, afirma. Para Marcio o
segredo do sucesso é não apenas sonhar grande, mas fazer o possível e o impossível para que este sonho possa se realizar. “Não devemos nos comparar com as
pessoas próximas a nós, temos que nos comparar com nós mesmos, temos que
olhar para traz e fazermos uma análise de como nossas vidas eram e como estão
hoje. É desta maneira que levo minha vida, não me comparo com os outros, mas
sim comigo mesmo, o que fui, e o que sou hoje”, conclui o lutador.
“I left Brazil and headed towards New Zealand, leaving
family, friends and jobs behind to arrive in a new country with
$ 350 in my wallet, an expired credit card and a backpack
with 15kg of clothes on my back. Not knowing how to speak
a word of English, I worked in the construction; often in winter
with temperatures as low as five degrees. Everything was white
with snow all around. However I never gave up my biggest
dream which was live from being a fighter and build my Jiu Jitsu
academy”, says Marcio.
The fighter left New Zealand because he was unable to
adapt to the weather and decided to head to Australia in search
of his dream. “Since the MMA is a new sport here in Australia,
living just from fighting is still a little tricky. Despite relatively
large fights in events shown on television by Foxtel, the sport is
still evolving. After five years in Australia I managed to open my
Jiu-Jitsu academy and with the support of my sponsor, I can live
the life I have always dreamed of ”, he says.
The Gracie Barra Hornsby Jiu Jitsu Academy was created as
a partnership with a fellow whom Marcio met here in Australia.
“We opened our academy in March this year and we already
have 50 students,” he says. For Marcio, the secret to success is
not to only dream big; but to do everything possible to make the
dream come true. “We should not compare with those close to
us; we have to compare ourselves to ourselves.We have to look
back and analyze what our lives were like before and how they
are today.This is how I live my life, I do not compare myself with
others, but instead to how I was before and how I am now”,
explains the fighter.

Whitsundays is a paradise for those who enjoy diving,
rare beauty and nature.
Whitsundays is a collection of continental islands of varied sizes located
on the central coast of Queensland in Australia. It is situated between the
south of Bowen and the north of Mackay, about 900km from Brisbane
and is popular for its spectacular barrier reef islands which receive more
than 700,000 visitors throughout the year.
Located 25 kilometers north of Prosperine, Arlie Beach is a shortcut to
any of the 74 islands. Small and charming, the tourist town is situated on
the banks of a beach with palm trees that overlook the calm waters of
Pioneer Bay which are scattered with yachts. In the midst of a garden, Arlie
Beach Lagoon can be found which is a small beach that offers free swimming and a pool for the children. Tourists continuously travel via the main
highway, which runs from the north to south of the Whitsundays coast.
Shute Harbor Road is the place that basic shopping is made for diving
equipment and where the great Abel Point Marina, from which most of the
boats departing for heaven can be found. Arlie Beach is famous for having
a relaxing atmosphere and a good nightlife as well as large amounts of
backpackers, restaurants, shops and travel agencies.
Another cool place to go to is the beach in Bowen, known to have
eight hours of sunshine. It is ranked as one of the hottest beaches in
Australia and has some of the best coral reefs off the Queensland coast.
It is no wonder that the region attracts divers wishing to explore the coral
gardens. Located 40 minutes north of Arlie Beach, Bowen is a provincial
town, with views of eucalyptus forests and grazing cattle and the sounds of
Kookaburras.

Whitehaven Beach is one place which cannot be missed. There is over
seven miles of sand considered to be one of the whitest in the world with
crystal clear water along the Whitsundays Island. It is the largest of the
74 islands. Considered the cleanest beach in northern Queensland by the
Resource Recovery Award, it gives visitors a true sense of relaxation. In the
north lies the Hill Inlet, a unique cove where the tide shifts the sand and
comes together with the water to make a beautiful fusion of colors. From
the Whitsunday Island lookout you can take advantage of the best views,
both of Whitehaven Beach and the Inlet.
The Great Barrier Reef protects the coast and the Whitsunday Islands
for more than two thousand kilometers. So if diving is your passion, then
this really is heaven. There you will see tens of thousands of species of
brightly colored fish, corals, sponges and other marine life, including whales
and dolphins. But if you only snorkel then there’s no reason to be sad. With
the snorkels you will be able to see many species of coral formations and
enjoy the warm waters along the turtles. And in addition, local businesses
are able to cater for all skill levels from beginner to master divers.
In addition to diving, you can do heavy or light hiking trails through
all the vegetation that covers the hillside, enjoying everything the island
has to offer. Heading up to the skies to watch the birds with a chartered
helicopter ride is also an option. You will also get to know the spectacular
coral reef, which has the shape of heart in the center of the ocean. You
may also visit some water falls, go rafting, surfing, kayaking and take part
in a variety of sports that will keep you closer to nature. Whitsundays also

Natal, tempo de comemorar e presentear
O final do ano se aproxima trazendo saudade, presentes e comidinhas gostosas.
Já reparou como é paradoxa essa época do ano? O Natal traz consigo melancolia e saudade,
mas ao mesmo tempo, a aproximação do ano novo desperta uma certa inquietação, ansiedade e
vem como uma injeção de ânimo no inconsciente. É o final de um ciclo dando início a uma nova

As the end of the year approaches it brings with it nostalgia, gifts and tasty food.
Have you noticed how paradoxical this time of year
is? Christmas brings with it melancholy and nostalgia
while at the same time, the approach of the New Year
awakens a certain restlessness, anxiety and comes
as an unconscious boost. It’s the end of a cycle and
the beginning of a new phase that arrives filled with
uncertainty and promises. And this feeling is common,
whether you are in Australia or Brazil.The good part
is that despite living so far from home, the celebration
and the tradition remains the same which includes
party, friends, food, good memories, and good laughs
and of course gifts.
We invited some Brazilians who live in Australia
to talk about their Christmas experiences here and
explain what to expect from this upcoming celebration.
“I’m have been living in Sydney for three years, so
for three Christmas celebrations. I don’t feel the same
Christmas spirit as I do from when I am in Brazil
because my family is there. Because of the absence
of the family environment, we Brazilians join together
and do something for dinner which includes great food
and drink, and sometimes even a secret friend gift
exchange. I don’t send gifts to my family or friends on
this date because firstly the rate the mail tax rate is
high and secondly because I go to Brazil every year
and that is when I take gifts and souvenirs with me on
the flight. A great tip for shopping here in Australia is to
buy your gifts on Boxing Day, which is Dec. 26 as there
is a mega sale on virtually all trade.This serves to sell
the unsold Christmas stock and give a boost in sales. It
is usually the best profit day for stores.This mega sale
also happens at the end of the fiscal year, at the end
of June.The discounts can be over 50% and it is quite
common to see lines queuing on the street in front
of department stores and major brands.” - Industrial
drawer, Camila Takahashi, 29, is from the city of Sao
Paulo and has been in Australia for three years.
“I have been living in Australia for the past five
years and there is no doubt that Christmas is the
most difficult commemorative day to be away from
your family. It is on this important date that we feel
the famous ‘homesickness’. However, this year will be
very different for me and my husband because I’m
pregnant with our first daughter, who is expected to
be born a little before Christmas. Our 2010 Christmas
gift is named Gabriella. Our family will also make
a visit this holiday season, so our Christmas will be
almost complete. In previous years, we would gather
at friends’ houses and run the famous secret friend
gift exchange and enjoy a good Brazilian meal.” Graduated in advertising and marketing, Ana Carolina
Ribeiro, 27, from Sao Paulo, has lived in Sydney for the
past five years.
“For me Christmas is synonymous with ‘family time’
with plenty of food and of course plenty of presents.
Here in Australia, despite all the wonders of this
country, this date brings with it the longing of our
parents and relatives.What we can do to compensate
for this is to find friends to celebrate with and through
technology, participate in some form of the festivals
going on in Brazil. As for gifts, to me there is no fun in
sending them to Brazil without being there to deliver
it. I think it loses the sentimental value so I prefer to
bring them with me on my next visit.” - Production
Engineer,Thiago Roriz, 30, was born in Goiânia and
has lived in Australia for two years.
“My husband and I have been in Australia for ten
years and we usually spend Christmas with mostly Brazilian friends with food, drinks and the Secret Santa.
This way there is no need to buy for everyone and
the Secret Santa is pretty cool and fun.We sometimes
send gifts to friends and family in Brazil.We generally
buy some souvenirs at Paddy’s Market in Chinatown
which is a great place to buy bits and pieces without
spending too much. Since I don’t always send gifts, I
try every year to make personalized Christmas cards
and send them either by mail or online to family and
friends who are away.This year however will be a little
different since we have a new family member, our
daughter Isabella, who is six months old. It will also be
different because our family is coming to spend Christmas and New Year here, which will make this year
even more special. “ - Architect, Renata Viggiani, 29, is
from Sao Paulo and came to Australia ten years ago.
The best time to go shopping: Spending
Christmas empty-handed is not a big deal since it is
worth waiting here in Australia to buy gifts.The best
time to go shopping around here is just after the 25th
December as the shops go on sale thoughout the
country. For many the 26th December is the more
awaited date of the year. It occurs on Boxing Day
when most stores sell their products with 50% discount.This goes for clothing, furniture and electronics.
Where to buy souvenirs: When sending gifts
to family and friends in Brazil the best bet is to send
something with an Australian appeal. If the family is
large, be prepared to spend when buying from official
souvenir stores spread across the country. Plan B however, is to look at the products that are made in China
which are sold at the markets.The quality is lower but
the price is attractive and affordable. In Sydney for
example, Paddy’s Market is your best bet. It is located
near Central Station in Chinatown and the place is a
shopper’s paradise.There you can find everything and
the price is less than half of that compared to the
products made in Australia.The colors, the flag and
the symbols of the country can be seen on key chains,
jerseys, caps, sweatshirts, socks, towels, postcards, slippers, bags and pens, among other products.To add to
this there are the traditional boomerangs, kangaroos
and koalas.
How to send: Those sending presents to Brazil
by mail to Brazil should make use of the website
(auspost.com.au / index.html) which features a clever
tool that allows the user to calculate the value of what
they are sending.To do this you must know the weight
of the order and choose how you will be sending the
gift be it by air or by sea.The first option is quicker and
also more expensive. In this case the delivery arrives
at its destination between two to 15 business days,
depending on the urgency.Via boat, delivery can take
up to one month.

Ingredientes
1 peru de 4 kg
2 xícaras de vinho branco
1 xícaras de vinagre
2 colheres de sopa de
tempero (pimenta do reino,
1 cebola, 2 dentes de alho
batido no liquidificador)
Fatias de bacon
Modo de fazer
Pré-aqueça o forno a 180°
Retire bem os restantes dos miúdos deixados dentro do peru
e também a pele do pescoço. Lave bem o peru e passe o
tempero por dentro e por fora. Deixe de molho de um dia para
o outro.
No dia seguinte, recheie-o e coloque no forno juntamente com
o molho.
Coloque por cima fatias de bacon ou simplesmente passe
bastante manteiga. Na medida que for assando vá regando com
seu próprio molho, virando-o de vez em quando.
Se o peru estiver bem corado e ainda cru por dentro abaixe o
fogo, cubra com papel alumínio e asse por mais alguns minutos.
Asse por aproximadamente duas horas dependendo do forno.

The word “Ceia” (Latin coena) has the meaning of the evening meal.
The Christmas meal is a family party to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Segundo um ditado popular italiano: La Pasqua con chi vuol; il Natale con i suoi! (“A
Páscoa com quem você quiser; o Natal sempre com os seus!”). Ou seja, a Ceia de Natal
é realmente um motivo de reunião dos familiares! Para áqueles que estão longe da
família os amigos se tornam irmãos e a Ceia de Natal vira uma união de amigos que já se
consideram da família.
Para Regina Kytzia, Chef e proprietária do restaurante Casa Brasil, o Natal significa um
momento de união e confraternização. “O Natal é também o tempo de perdão e renovação dos nossos sonhos”, afirma. Regina tenta preparar a Ceia para a sua família como
no Brasil. “Mesmo sem ter toda minha família aqui, me reúno também com meus amigos
formando assim uma grande família”, conta a chef.
Os australianos não tem o costume de fazer ceia, eles comemoram o Natal apenas
com um almoço no dia 25 e o prato principal é geralmente a carne assada, mas para
Regina isso não funciona. “No Natal não pode faltar um belo jantar com peru ou pernil.
No dia seguinte não tem graça o almoço sem estes pratos divinos”.
Para os brasileiros que não têm medo de se arriscar na cozinha Regina dá a dica.
“Aqui pode-se encontrar todos os ingredientes para uma boa ceia é só se aventurar e
fazer uma ceia maravilhosa, confira a receita abaixo e tenha um Natal delicioso!”

According to an Italian proverb: La Pasqua con
chi vuole, il Natale con i Suoi! (“Easter with whomever you want; Christmas always with yours!”). In
other words, the Christmas meal is really a matter
of being with the family! For those who are away
from family, friends become like brothers and
Christmas dinner turns into a union of friends who
are considered as family.
For Regina Kytzia, chef and owner of the
restaurant, Casa Brazil, Christmas means a time
of togetherness and fellowship. “Christmas is also
the time for forgiveness and the renewal of our
dreams,” she says. Regina tries to prepare supper
for her family just as she would in Brazil. “Even
without having all my family here, I meet with my
friends and we form one big family,” says the chef.
Australians generally don’t have the habit of
making dinner; they celebrate Christmas only with
a lunch on the 25th December with the main dish
usually being roast beef. This does not fly with
Regina. “At Christmas a nice dinner with turkey or
ham cannot be left out.The next day lunch is no
fun without these divine dishes. “
For Brazilians who are not afraid to venture
into the kitchen Regina provides this following hint.
“Here you can find all the ingredients for a good
supper. All you have to do is venture out and make
a wonderful meal. Check out the recipe below and
have a delicious Christmas!”
Brazilian Turkey
Ingredients:
• 1 turkey of 4 kg
• 2 cups white wine
• 1 cup vinegar
• 2 tablespoons seasoning (black pepper, 1 onion, •
2 cloves garlic whipped in a blender)
• Bacon
How to prepare
Preheat oven to 180 °
Properly wipe the leftovers of the mince left
inside the turkey and also the neck skin. Rinse the
turkey and wipe the seasoning inside and out. Let it
soak from one day to the next.The next day, place
filling and place in oven with the sauce.
Place bacon slices on top or just spread lots of
butter. As it is being cooked it’s own sauce will form
and keep turning it from time to time.
If the turkey is well stained and still raw on the
inside lower the heat, cover with aluminum foil and
bake for another few minutes.
Bake for approximately two hours depending on
the oven.
Filling
• 2 tablespoons butter, margarine or olive oil ½ cup
olive oil.
• ½ kg of cassava flour
• 1 large onion, diced
• 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
• Parsley to taste
• Pepper to taste
• A pinch of salt
Fry the onion and garlic then place the cassava
flour, stir to blush a little.
Place the parsley at the end and black pepper.

Como manter a forma no verão?

Na academia, já fui abordada por diversos brasileiros em pânico por causa de alguns
inesperados quilinhos adquiridos alguns meses depois de sua chegada na Austrália.
Os brasileiros estão, geralmente, inseguros. Não
sabendo o que fazer na acadêmia, em termos de exercícios, e também acham difícil manter uma dieta saudável,
por não conhecerem os produtos australianos.
Neste artigo seguem algumas dicas para motivar os
leitores da Falamos Português a comer melhor e se movimentar mais. Sem desculpas para voltar fora de forma
para o Brasil!
Dicas de Nutrição
Nutrição é 70% do negócio! “Você não pode superar
a má nutrição com malhação” é uma das minhas citações
favoritas.
Nunca pule o café-da-manhã. Tente incluir uma fonte
de proteína nesta refeição (ex: ovos, presunto ou peito
de peru). Pães com baixos índices de açúcar são uma
boa opção e vão deixá-lo satisfeito por mais tempo (ex.
Burgen Soy- Linseed).
Siga a sua cultura! Arroz e feijão são cheios de bons
nutrientes! Você pode cozinhar o feijão em grande
quantidade e congelar. O ideal é misturar o feijão com
um arroz com baixos índices de açúcar (Long Rain Basmati, por exemplo).
Sempre coma produtos frescos, evite comidas processadas. Cozinhe em grandes quantidades e congele, assim
você sempre terá um jantar pré-pronto e pode fugir da
tentação do “Macca’s”.
Se você gosta de um lanchinho salgado no meio do
dia, a melhor opção são as nozes e as amêndoas cruas e
sem sal.
Dicas de execícios
Você precisa mexer o seu corpo no mínimo de 4 a
5 dias da semana. A caminhada de casa para a escola,
ou para o trabalho, não vai deixá-lo mais magro ou
tonificado! Para manter o seu metabolismo trabalhando
você precisa treinar com pesos pelo menos duas vezes
por semana.
Exercícios funcionais, com pesos, e de alta intensidade
(com intervalos) são a chave para a perda de peso.
Não sabe o que são exercícios funcionais? Exercícios
que usam vários músculos de uma só vez, que resultam
em uma alta expensão de calorias = perda de peso.
Mulheres tem medo de pegar pesos e isso é um engano. Quanto mais massa muscular você ganha, maior é
e sua Taxa Metabólica. Quanto maior a Taxa Metabólica
maior a quantidade de calorias queimadas por dia (isso
quando você não está se exercitando!).
Treino cruzado (não faça sempre o mesmo exercício).
Isso vai prevenir lesões e vai mantê-lo no caminho certo
para a perda de peso!

How to get fit during the summer?
At the gym I have been several times approached by Brazilians members panicking in face of an unexpected
weight gain, sometimes just months after their arrival in Australia.
They are normally insecure, not knowing what to do in a gym in terms of exercise and also find hard to maintain
a healthy diet, not being familiar with most Australian food products.
In this article I will give some practical tips that hopefully the reader will find useful and get some motivation to
start eating well and moving more. No excuses to get back unfit to Brazil!
Nutritional Tips:
Nutrition is 70% of the business! “You can’t outrained bad nutrition” is one of my favorite quotes!
Always eat breakfast.Try to include a protein source (ex: eggs, ham, turkey breast). Low GI breads are a good
choice as they make you full longer. (Burgen Soy- Linseed is a great option)
Stick to your culture! Rice and beans are packed with good nutrients! You can cook beans in large portions and
freeze and have it with low GI rice (long grain, basmati).
Always eat fresh, avoid processed foods. Cook in big batches and freeze so you have some dinner ready when
you get home and escape the “Macca’s” temptation!
If you are prone to get hungry snack on unsalted nuts. Best options are:Walnuts and almonds.
Exercise hints:
You need to move your body at least 4 to 5 times/ week. Just walking won’t make you slim and toned! To keep
your metabolism ticking you should be training weights at least twice a week. Functional weight exercises, high
intensity training (intervals) are the key of fat loss!
Don’t know what functional exercises are? Big compound exercises (using many body muscles at once) result in
very high calorie expenditure = weight loss.
Females are scared of weights and this is a misconception.The more lean muscle mass you gain the higher BMR
(Basal metabolic rate) you will have!! The higher your BMR is the more calories you will spend per day (this is when
you are NOT EXERCISING!!!).
Cross train (not the very same exercise EVERY TIME!) This will avoid injuries and keep you in a right track!.

IELTS: Preparation is the key!

IELTS is a popular test used by students wishing to enter universities
and colleges, apply for residency in Australia, or demonstrate their
English ability to prospective employers. More than 1 million students
sit IELTS each year. Here are some tips we give our students.
GENERAL TIPS
It’s essential that you understand what you will have to do
in the test. IELTS is a game, and you must learn the rules!
After you know the rules of the game, you need to practise all parts of the test!
However, remember that practice tests don’t teach new
skills. Tests will reveal your level, but not improve it.
Does your lifestyle help or hinder your English? If you live
and/or work with people who speak your first language,
it’s very likely you won’t use English with them.
SPEAKING TIPS
Practice speaking when you’re tired! Remember that the
Speaking test is at the end of the day for most candidates.

Express your opinion! If you don’t give long answers, the
examiner will presume you don’t have the ability to give
long answers. Give lots of reasons and examples.
Practise topics you are unfamiliar with. You might feel confident talking about sport or hobbies, what about globalisation or technology?
Don’t distract the examiner from what you are saying.
Don’t play with the pencil or paper!
Smile! LISTENING TIPS
Read the questions first, underline keywords and predict
possible answers. Reading the questions in advance will
help you listen for the relevant information.
Use capital letters
Use the 10 minute transfer time carefully. Remove silly errors such as spelling mistakes and using the wrong symbol
($, cm, kg). If you have finished transferring, check your
answers
Don’t worry if you miss a few questions, ignore them and
keep on going! You can review them during the 10 minute
transfer time.
READING
Read the questions first, underline keywords and predict
possible answers. Just like the Listening test.
Never leave an answer blank, always write something! If
you can’t find an answer, skip it and move on. However, at
the end of the test, go back and put down an answer for
those questions.
Be very careful not to mix up Yes/No and True/False.
Many students struggle with the difference between False/
No, and Not Given. If the answer is False/No, there is information in the test that contradicts the question. If it’s Not
Given, there is no information that relates to that question
in the test, or the information is incomplete.
WRITING TIPS
Learn the required structures. The question styles are very
predictable. Be prepared!
Practise topics you are unfamiliar with.
Read the question carefully! Some question topics have
small, but significant, differences.
Plan – don’t just start writing! The first few minutes must
be spent planning. Writing without planning is very dangerous!
Be careful with your timing, start with Task 2, then spend
20 minutes on Task 1.
IELTS can be the key to achieving your goals, so it’s
important that you prepare for the test carefully!
We recommend studying an IELTS Preparation course
that will teach you the skills you need. Studying with an
IELTS examiner is always an advantage. Good luck for
your IELTS test!

de arte e a arte de uma forma geral, por isso o mercado de design é bastante
concorrido. Melbourne é o principal centro de design da Austrália, com os
maiores estúdios e agências, alguns renomados internacionalmente. Sydney
vem em segundo lugar, também com grandes empresas e grupos multinacionais de publicidade.
O profissional de Design Gráfico é respeitado e valorizado por aqui. Segundo informações do site de empregos My Career a média anual do salário de
Graphic Designer é em torno de $68 mil. Por essa razão os cursos, tanto em
Colleges quanto em Universidades, são muito procurados por estudantes australianos e internacionais. Uma boa oportunidade para entrar nesse mercado
é trabalhar como freelancer, assim você pode trabalhar para várias empresas e
mostrar o seu trabalho para o mercado.
O brasileiro, André Eberle, 30 anos, está na Austrália há dez meses e já está
trabalhando como freelancer para uma empresa na Sunshine Coast. “Algumas
oportunidades aqui na Austrália, consegui por meio do site www.seek.com.au e
outras por agências de recrutamento especializado”, conta André. Mas segundo
o brasileiro é importante se preparar para apresentar um bom inglês e um portfólio completo nas empresas. “É preciso ter muita coragem e persistência. Não
ter medo de bater nas portas. Ter um currículo bem diagramado e vontade de
aprender”, conclui.
A área de Design Gráfico também pode garantir um visto de sponsor para os
interessados e dispostos a batalhar pelo seu espaço. Gustavo Poletti Figueiredo,
27 anos, está há apenas um ano na Austrália e já conseguiu o seu sponsor. “Sempre trabalhei como diretor de arte no Brasil, em agências de propaganda. Vim
para Austrália para trabalhar na área, no momento sou diretor de arte de uma
agência de propaganda aqui, como era no Brasil”, conta. Para conseguir o emprego Gustavo tentou falar com os diretores de criação, por email ou telefone.
“Ligava para as agências e me apresentava, querendo mostrar meu portfólio. Fiz
duas entrevistas e logo surgiu um freelance de um mês, que virou seis meses e
que virou um visto de trabalho”, conclui o brasileiro.

Australia is a country that supports various cultural events, exhibitions,

Professional graphic designers are respected and valued here. According

The Brazilian, Andre Eberle, 30, has been in Australia for ten months
and is already working as a freelancer for a company on the Sunshine
Coast. “Some opportunities here in Australia, I got through the site www.
seek.com.au and other specialist recruitment agencies,” says Andre. But
according to the Brazilian, the important thing is to have good English and
submit a complete portfolio to companies. “It takes great courage and
persistence and you cannot be afraid to knock on doors. Having a resume
well diagrammed and a willingness to learn is also very important”, he
explains.
The area of Graphic Design can secure a visa sponsor for those interested and willing to fight for it. Gustavo Poletti Figueiredo, 27, arrived in
Australia only a year ago and has already secured a sponsor for himself. “I
always worked as an art director in Brazil in advertising agencies. I came
to Australia to work in this same field and at the moment I am the art
director in an advertising agency here much similar to my role in Brazil”,
he says.To get the job, Gustavo tried to talk to creative directors by email
or telephone. “I would call agencies and introduce myself wanting to show
my portfolio. I did two interviews before a freelance opportunity emerged
for one month.This turned into six months and than became a work visa”,
said the Brazilian.
Em 2005 vim a Sydney para o casamento de
uma das minhas irmãs (as duas moram aqui há
sete anos). Elas sempre me falavam que Sydney
era a minha cara. Eu achava que era apenas
para me convencer a vir, mas elas estavam certas. Foi paixão a primeira vista.
Voltei daquelas férias decidida. Vou me
mudar para Sydney e fiz tudo com muito planejamento. Pedi licença dos meus empregos,
traduzi meus documentos para inglês, entrei
em contato com o conselho de enfermagem
de NSW, e convenci o meu noivo de passar uma
“temporada” na Austrália. Tudo parecia estar
organizado, arrumei as minhas malas e vim.
Apesar de todo o meu planejamento, as coisas não aconteceram como eu queria. O curso
para reconhecimento do diploma estava esgotado e só conseguiria vaga em dez meses.
Enquanto esperava o início do curso, tive que
aplicar para outro visto de estudante que me
permitisse ficar por mais de seis meses, fazer
outro IELTS (pois tinha expirado) e começar a
trabalhar, é claro.
“Apesar do caminho tortuoso, todos os
momentos difíceis serviram como enorme aprendizado.”
Durante os longos meses de espera me matriculei em um curso de Community Services.
Logo depois que comecei esse curso vocacional, conheci uma professora que me indicou
para trabalhar numa clínica psiquiatrica. Meu
trabalho consistia em aconselhamento e terapia em grupo, isso me ajudou em aperfeiçoar
meu inglês, principalmente termos técnicos. Foi
um ótimo aprendizado.
Os primeiros meses foram bem difíceis. Eu
ficava me questionando se estava fazendo a
coisa certa. Afinal de contas eu tinha uma vida
estável no Brasil, e estava enfrentando tantas
dificuldades aqui. Encontrei algumas pessoas
que me disseram que eu nunca iria conseguir
o reconhecimento da minha profissão na Austrália, porém meus amigos e família me deram
força para ficar e insistir. E eu fiquei.
Finalmente 15 meses depois de ter chegado
na Austrália consegui ter meu diploma reconhecido. Hoje tenho o emprego dos meus sonhos. Trabalho em pesquisa clínica oncológica
em um grande hospital público, participo de
congressos nacionais e internacionais, consegui a residência permanente na Austrália e
meu marido (sim, casamos mês passado) deve
terminar o reconhecimento da profissão dele
em breve.
Depois de alguns meses só estudando, não
dava pra fugir mais eu teria trabalhar para pagar as contas (afinal de contas o curso de sete
semanas de duração custava quase o equivalente a um ano de faculdade). Decidi que queria
um emprego em hospital ou algo similar, assim
eu poderia estar mais em contato com a minha
profissão, porém a minha busca foi em vão.
Não consegui nada e estava bem frustrada.
Sempre que encontro um brasileiro faço
questão de dizer para nunca desistir dos sonhos.
Tudo é possível. O mundo é grande e cheio de
oportunidades, não podemos fechar as portas
ou pensar que é impossível. Apesar do caminho
tortuoso, todos os momentos difíceis serviram
como enorme aprendizado. Aprendi que as coisas acontecem no seu modo, no seu tempo no
seu jeito, basta ter paciência e perseverança.

Working as a salesman in Australia requires a certain style.
Trabalhar como vendedor na
Austrália requer jogo de cintura.
Todo mundo é um pouco vendedor, afinal é preciso saber se promover para ter sucesso, seja nas relações sociais, amorosas ou mesmo no
ambiente de trabalho. Agora, quem deseja fazer isso profissionalmente
na Austrália tem que saber demonstrar simpatia e gostar de lidar com o
cliente.
Sete anos trabalhando na empresa Purely Australian Clothing Company renderam à paulistana Maria Augusta Righi Campos experiência e
também o sponsor. “Trabalhei em vários cafés, restaurantes, também fui
cleaner, numa dessas de procurar emprego de porta em porta consegui a vaga de vendedora nessa loja, que fazia merchandising para as
Olimpíadas”, conta Guta, que é publicitária e está há 12 anos no país.
“Comecei trabalhando no aeroporto doméstico de Sydney como casual,
depois que me ofereceram o sponsor, passei a trabalhar full time, virei
gerente e depois gerente regional.”
Diferentemente do Brasil, aqui a maioria das lojas não funcionam
com o comissionamento, isso quer dizer que o empregado ganha por
hora e, se atingir a meta estipulada, aí sim, pode levar um extra no final
da semana ou do mês, dependendo de cada companhia. “A parte boa
não é monetária, mas o reconhecimento. Eu consegui o sponsor por
reconhecimento”, diz ela, que é cidadã australiana e hoje trabalha em
uma empresa que vende ações on-line.
“A parte ruim do trabalho, na minha opinião, é o choque cultural, é
difícil lidar com isso”, comenta Guta, lembrando que cada cultura tem

seu próprio modo de agir. “Os chineses queriam barganhar, os americanos, acostumados com a política do refund, queriam o dinheiro de
volta, enquanto os japoneses eram muito formais”.
Curiosamente, é essa mesma diversidade que atraiu a artista plástica
paulistana Luciana Hellu Silva, de 31 anos, para atuar na área. “Trabalhar
com vendas é sempre bom, você tem a chance de conhecer pessoas
diferentes, tanto clientes como funcionários. Com o tempo você ganha
poder de persuasão, aprende muito, se desafia”, explica ela, que desde
abril é vendedora da loja Tie Rack London, no centro de Sydney.
“Já trabalhei muito com vendas no Brasil, quando vim para cá comecei
como waitress, um dia deixei meu currículo nessa loja e três meses
depois me ligaram perguntando se eu estava interessada. É um trabalho
seguro de segunda a sexta. Como waitress eu não tinha segurança nenhuma. Com o tempo pude me dar ao luxo de largar o outro emprego”,
conta ela, que vive há um ano e oito meses no país.
Luciana ganha em torno de 17 dólares por hora. “Prefiro que o salário
seja fixo ao invés de comissão. Sei o quanto ganho, sei o quanto posso
gastar”, justifica. Como requisitos básicos da profissão, Luciana aponta:
“tem que ter carisma, ser extrovertido, tem que aprender a usar o diálogo. Vendas é uma profissão que sempre vai existir, sempre vai ter gente
querendo comprar, sempre vai ter gente querendo vender. Sempre vai
ter trabalho para quem sabe fazer”.
Everyone is somewhat of a seller, after all we
need it to succeed in promoting ourselves either
in social relationships, romantic or even for work.
However, for those wanting to do it professionally in Australia, show empathy and enjoy dealing
with customers is a must.
Having worked seven years at the company,
Purely Australian Clothing Company, gave Maria
Augusta Righi from Sao Paulo experience and
also a sponsor. “I worked in various cafes and
restaurants, and also as a cleaner and throughout this job seeking I landed a job at this store
which did merchandising for the Olympics”,
explains Guta, who worked in advertising and
has been in Australia for 12 years. “I started
working at Sydney domestic airport as a casual
and after being offered a sponsor; I started
working full time and became manager and
then regional manager.”
Unlike Brazil, most stores here do not work
on commission basis. This means that the employee earns per hour and if they set the taget
achieved then the employee can take some
extra money at the end of the week or month,
depending on each company. “The good part is
not monetary but the recognition. I got a sponsor through recognition,” says Guta, who is now
an Australian citizen and currently works for a
company that sells shares online.
“The bad part of the job in my opinion is
the culture shock that I had to deal with,” she
says, noting that each culture has its own mannerisms. “The Chinese wanted to bargain, the
Americans were accustomed to their refund
policy while the Japanese were too formal.”

Interestingly, it’s this diversity that attracted
plastic artist, Luciana Hellu Silva, 31, to work
in this area. “Working in sales is always good;
you have the chance to meet different people,
customers and employees. Over time you understand the power of persuasion, learn a lot and
remain challenged,” explains Luciana, who has
been a salesperson at the London Tie Rack in
downtown Sydney since April.
“I’ve worked a lot with sales in Brazil. When I
came here I began as a waitress; one day I left
my resume in the store and three months later
they called me asking if I was interested. It is a
secure job from Monday to Friday. As a waitress
I had no security. With time I could afford to
move away from that job,” explains the saleswoman who has been living in Australia for a
year and eight months.
Luciana earns around $17 per hour. “I prefer
a fixed salary rather than commission based. I
know how much I earn, I know how much I can
spend,” she explains. As basic requirements of
the profession, Luciana points out: “You have
to have charisma, be outgoing and learn how
to use dialogue. Sales is a profession that will
always exist; there will always be people looking
to buy and hence there will always be people
wanting to sell. There will always be work for
those who know how to sell.”

economizar ainda mais. “Eu recomendo fazer paradas na Ásia, podendo
ser em Cingapura, Malasia, Hong Kong ou Bangkok, voando em seguida
para a Europa, podendo entrar por Frankfurt, Roma, Madrid ou Londres
(mas os valores das taxas de embarque podem aumentar um pouco se a
escolha for Londres), depois saindo de qualquer outro país dentro dos
citados acima rumo ao Brasil ou Estados Unidos e voltando à Austrália”,
conclui.

Você já pensou em praticar Mountain Bike na
Austrália? Se a resposta é não, saiba que você está
perdendo muita aventura, vários benefícios físicos,
além do contato com a natureza.
Para os “perdidos” no assunto, a mountain bike é uma bicicleta projetada
para passeios “off-road”, em estradas de terras, trilhas em montanhas, dentro de
parques ou outros locais não-pavimentados. O objetivo é atravessar percursos
com irregularidades e obstáculos.
Essas bicicletas são um pouco diferentes das normais com pneus largos e
maior controle em terrenos acidentados, na areia e na lama. Usam amortecedores na frente, atrás ou nos dois. Possuem aros de 24”, 26” e de 29”. E a quantidade de marchas varia de 21 até 30.
O esporte envolve resistência, agilidade e auto-suficiência. Como é comum
a prática em locais isolados, a auto-suficiência é importante para que o ciclista

A Mountain Bike Austrália (MTBA) é a maior associação do esporte no
país e está comprometida com a promoção e desenvolvimento do esporte
em toda a Austrália. No site da associação (www.mtba.asn.au) você pode
achar uma lista de clubes do esporte. Se cadastrando em um deles é possível
participar de competições, atividades e treinamentos.
Há várias modalidades de Mountain Bike. Dentre elas, as mais famosas são
o Cross-country ou XC, prova disputada em estradas de terra, de curta distância. O Downhill ou DH, onde o ciclista passa por um percurso em descida,
enfrentando situações de bastante risco. O BMX, onde as provas são disputadas em circuito com várias voltas e obstáculos. E o Freeride, utilizado como
forma de lazer, em terrenos variados. O equipamento mínimo em todas elas,
além de uma bicicleta adequada, é composto de capacete, luvas, uma reserva
de câmara-de-ar, bomba-de-ar, água e alimentos.
Para os amadores, a Austrália possui uma grande lista de locais para passeios de Mountain Bike. Em Byron Bay, a “Mountain Bike Tours” é especialista
em passeios de bicicleta no norte de NSW e ao sul de QLD. Com pacotes
que variam de um dia a vários dias. Para quem está em Western Austrália, a
“Dirty Detours” oferece passeios de Mountain Bike em Margaret River, para
atletas e grupos de todos os tamanhos e níveis.

Have you thought about mountain biking in Australia? If your answer is no, then know that
you’re missing a lot of adventure, many physical benefits as well as contact with nature.
For those unsure what is being discussed
here, the mountain bike is a bike designed for
touring off-road, on dirt roads, mountain trails,
in parks or other non-paved terrains. The goal
of the bike is to be able to overcome paths with
irregularities and obstacles.
These bikes are a little different from normal
one, with wide tires and greater control in rough
terrain, sand and mud. They have bumpers on
the front, rear or both. They also have 24 “, 26”
and 29 “ rims while the amount of gears ranges
from 21 to 30.
Mountain Bike involves endurance, agility and
self-sufficiency. Since it is common practice to
ride in isolated places, self-sufficiency is important in order that the cyclist can perform minor

half years and began practicing the sport to
make friends. When he arrived in Australia he
found the information on the Internet and today
whenever he has time, he rides his mountain
bike in the outskirts of Sydney, Blue Mountains,
Ku Ring Gai National Park and Manly Dam.
Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) is the largest association of the sport in the country and
is committed to promoting and developing the
sport throughout Australia. In the association’s
website (www.mtba.asn.au) you can find a list
of sports clubs. By joining one of them, you can

There are several types of Mountain Bike.

Aos 32 anos, o tricampeão mundial Andy Irons morre com suspeita de Dengue.
É impossível falar de surf e não mencionar grandes nomes como Andy Irons e
Kelly Slater. Irons nasceu em 24 de julho de 1978, em Oahu, no Havaí e venceu o
primeiro campeonato aos 18.
Irons começou a competir profissionalmente em 1998 e fez história depois de
alcançar três campeonatos mundiais (2002, 2003 e 2004) e 19 vitórias em campeonatos e ser o único surfista com triunfos em todas as provas do Circuito Mundial.
Na vida pessoal Irons era casado com Lyndie, que esperava o segundo filho do
casal. Sua morte foi repentina, o surfista passou mal em um voô de Porto Rico para
Kauai (Havaí), quando o avião pousou para uma escala em Dallas, Irons desembarcou e depois foi encontrado morto em um hotel da cidade. Segundo informações
da imprensa americana ele foi vítima de Dengue.
No domingo, sete de novembro, o surfista Tom Carrol, organizou uma celebração que reuniu vários surfistas em Avalon Beach, em homenagem ao grande campeão Andy Irons. Na praia de Snaper Rocks na Gold Coast também foi realizada
uma homenagem ao surfista.
A equipe da Falamos Português presta aqui sua homenagem à um grande

It is impossible to talk about surfing and not
mention big names like Andy Irons and Kelly
Slater. Irons was born on July 24, 1978 in Oahu,
Hawaii and won his first championship at 18.
Irons began competing professionally in 1998
and made history after reaching three world
championships (2002, 2003 and 2004) and
having 19 victories in championships and being
the only surfer to have wins in all competitions
of the World Tour.The surfer was ranked 16th in
the world ranking before he died.

A Falamos Português traz uma breve biografia destas mulheres.

Julia Gillard: Nascida no País de Gales em setembro de 1961, Julia Gillard chegou à Austrália com seis anos de
idade, juntamente com os pais e a irmã mais velha. Em Adelaide, começou seu trabalho político como estudante na
Universidade da cidade. Já em Melbourne, onde se formou em Bacharel em direito e artes, entrou mais ativamente
para a política estudantil e começou assim sua carreira política.
Após se graduar na universidade começou a trabalhar no escritório de advocacia Slater e Gordon, onde se tornou
sócia em 1990. De 1996 a 1998 atuou como Chefe do Estado Maior, para o então líder da oposição do Estado de Victoria, John Brumby. Em 1998, Julia Gillard concorreu pela primeira vez à cadeira Federal para o Partido Trabalhista
Australiano, quando foi eleita. De 1998 a 2001, Julia participou da Casa dos Representantes do Comitê Permanente
do Emprego, Educação e Relações do Trabalho. Em 2001, foi nomeada ministra da oposição para a População e Imigração e, posteriormente, de Assuntos Indígenas e Reconciliação em 2003.
De 2003 a 2006, foi ministra da oposição da saúde. E no final de 2006, se tornou Vice-Líder do Partido Trabalhista
Australiano e serviu como ministra da oposição do Emprego e Relações Industriais e Inclusão Social. Após a vitória do
Partido Trabalhista Australiano em 2007, na eleição federal, Julia foi empossada como a primeira mulher Vice-Primeira Ministra e ainda assumiu responsabilidades como Ministra da Educação, do Emprego e Relações do Trabalho
e Inclusão Social. De onde saiu para se tornar a vigésima sétima pessoa a ocupar o cargo de Primeiro-ministro da
Austrália, e a primeira mulher a ocupar o cargo.

Dilma Vana Rousseff: Nasceu no dia 14 de dezembro de 1947, em Belo Horizonte (MG). Nascida em família
de classe média alta e educada de modo tradicional, interessou-se pelos ideais socialistas durante a juventude, logo
após o Golpe Militar de 1964. Iniciando na militância, integrou organizações que defendiam a luta armada contra o
regime militar, como o Comando de Libertação Nacional (COLINA) e a Vanguarda Armada Revolucionária Palmares
(VAR Palmares). Passou quase três anos presa entre 1970 e 1972.
Reconstruiu sua vida no Rio Grande do Sul, onde se formou em Ciências Econômicas pela Universidade Federal do
Rio Grande do Sul, e junto a Carlos Araújo, seu companheiro por mais de trinta anos, ajudou na fundação do Partido
Democrático Trabalhista (PDT). Exerceu o cargo de secretária municipal da Fazenda de Porto Alegre no governo
Alceu Collares e, mais tarde, foi secretária estadual de Minas e Energia, tanto no governo de Alceu Collares como no
de Olívio Dutra, no meio do qual se filiou ao Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) em 2001.
Em 2002, participou da equipe que formulou o plano de governo de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva para a área energética. Posteriormente, foi nomeada Ministra de Minas e Energia, onde permaneceu até 2005, quando foi nomeada
ministra-chefe da Casa Civil e nas eleições de 2010 foi eleita a primeira mulher Presidente da República do Brasil.

In 2010 Brazil and Australia got new leaders, and both countries have for the first time in its history, chosen a
woman to occupy this position. Falamos Português Magazine give a brief biography of these women.
Julia Gillard: Born in Wales on September 1961,
Julia Gillard arrived in Australia when she was just six years
of age, along with her parents and older sister. In Adelaide,
she began her political work as a student at University. In
Melbourne, where she graduated in Bachelor of Arts and
Law, she became more actively involved in student politics
and this began her political career.
After graduating from university she started working at
the law firm Slater & Gordon, where she became a partner
in 1990. From 1996 to 1998 she served as Chief of Staff
to the then State of Victoria opposition leader, John Brumby.
On her first run for the seat of the Federal Australian Labor
Party in 1998, she elected. From 1998 to 2001, Julia attended the House of Representatives Standing Committee
on Employment, Education and Workplace Relations. In
2001 she was named minister of the opposition for Population and Immigration, and later of Indigenous Affairs and
Reconciliation Commission in 2003.

tion minister. And in late 2006, she became Deputy Leader
of the Australian Labor Party and served as minister of the
opposition of Employment and Industrial Relations and
Social Inclusion. After the victory of the Australian Labor
Party federal election in 2007, Julia was sworn in as the first
woman Deputy Prime Minister while assuming responsibilities as Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace
Relations and Social Inclusion. From here she went on to
become the twenty-seventh person to hold the post of
Prime Minister of Australia, and the first woman to hold the
position.
Dilma Vana Rousseff: She was born on December
14, 1947, in Belo Horizonte (MG). Born into an upper
middle class family and educated in the traditional way, she
became interested in socialist ideals in youth shortly after
the military coup of 1964. Starting out in militancy, she
integrated organizations that advocated the armed struggle
against the military regime, such as the National Liberation
Commando (HILL) and the Armed Revolutionary Vanguard
Palmares (Palmares VAR). She spent nearly three years in
prison between 1970 and 1972.
She rebuilt her life in Rio Grande do Sul, where she graduated in economics from the University of Rio Grande do Sul,
and together with Carlos Araujo, her companion for over
thirty years, helped form the Democratic Labor Party (PDT).
She held the position of municipal secretary of the Treasury
of Porto Alegre in the Alceu Collares government. Later on
she became State Secretary of Energy and Mines, both in
the Alceu Collares government and the Olivio Dutra government, among which time she became are affiliated with the
Labor’ Party (PT) in 2001.
In 2002, she participated in the team that formulated the
government plan for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the area of
energy. She was later appointed Minister of Mines and Energy, where she remained until 2005 when she was named
Chief Minister of the Civil House and in the 2010 election
she wes elected, the first woman, President of Brazil.

Reinventando o Natal
Para os brasileiros em geral, o Natal é um momento para celebrar,
agradecer, dar abraços carinhosos, desejar o “tudo de bom” e pedir a
renovação. Cada um celebra de uma maneira diferente, como pode, faz
a ceia a seu modo. Uns vão para a praia ou viajam, outros permanecem
nas cidades. Há quem ame e espere as festas com uma ansiedade gostosa desde outubro! Mas um detalhe é unânime do Oiapoque ao Chuí:
a noite (e o dia) de Natal foi feita para estar em família. Os corações
ficam maiores e todos são bem vindos! Quanto mais gente, mais legal e
especial fica. Não é?
Bem, assim idealizamos. Mas o que fazer se você está longe, muito
longe, fazendo intercâmbio, morando um tempo fora, geograficamente
impossível de estar com todas essas pessoas amadas? Conheço quem se deprima e fique desolado gastando minutos a
fio aos prantos no telefone. Sofrimento dos dois lados da linha, pouca
celebração... Contudo, também conheço aqueles que se permitem
vivenciar o Natal de um jeito diferente e criativo. É momento para
comemorar a vida, certo? Então se você está do outro lado do oceano,
o faça de um jeito diferente! Sem comparações... é di-fe-ren-te.
É sinal de amor e cuidado telefonar e derramar lágrimas com um
saudoso “Feliz Natal, mãe!”, “Queria estar aí com vocês, gente”. Mas
positivo e saudável é desligar o telefone, limpar as lágrimas, e desfrutar
o que a vida lhe oferece onde você está. Como é passar o Natal na Austrália? Como eles festejam? O que eles pensam dessa comemoração?
O que eles comem? Você sabe? Não tem peru e farofa? Ainda bem!
Deixe para comer isso na volta, no Natal que vem. Nesse vasto continente deve-se comer outras coisas deliciosas. Experimente!

Para o seu bem-estar emocional e riqueza de aprendizado, sugiro
que vá planejando carinhosamente o momento. Se dê esse presente:
uma noite que pode não ter presentes materiais e nem muita gente por
perto, mas tem você mesmo, se alimentando de bons pensamentos,
aprendendo algo novo, comendo algo inusitado, exercitando a sua
criatividade e capacidade de ser seu melhor amigo! Acredito ser um
grande presente você estar aí.
Lembre-se que a gente tem sempre o poder de dar a cor e o brilho
para os momentos da vida. Amo o Natal em família, se amo! Mas
quando me vi sozinha na Inglaterra cinzenta e gelada, resolvi buscar o
charme da situação e perguntar a mim mesma quais seriam os planos B,
C e D que me deixariam satisfeita e possibilitariam desfrutar o momento e a oportunidade de estar por lá. Achei a resposta e valeu a pena!
Não doeu tanto e o mais legal foi que me dei conta que posso contar
comigo mesma. Pense, também, que os vínculos formados quando se
está longe, se tornam um pedaço da nossa família. Divida com eles seu
coração cheio de amor e carinho.
Aproveite para fortalecer os laços com quem está longe. Mande
aquela carta ou email, dizendo aquilo tudo que muitas vezes presencialmente não se tem coragem. A distância é física, mas os corações
certamente estão mais perto do que nunca.
Gosto de lançar desafios que tornam as pessoas mais fortes, e por
isso, deixo aqui um presente (que não é de grego!) para aqueles que
aceitarem a brincadeira: o que VOCÊ vai fazer para que o seu Natal em
2010 seja especial, diferente e feliz?

For Brazilians in general, Christmas is a time to celebrate, give thanks
and hugs, wish peace towards others and ask for a fresh start. Each
person/group celebrates it and supper in different ways: Some go to the
beach or travel, others remain in cities. There are those who love and wait
for the holidays with a delicious anxiety since October! But one detail
remains: the night (and day) for Christmas is designed to be spent with
family. Hearts grow bigger and all are welcome! The more people the
more fun and special it is. Isn’t that correct?
Well, this how we hope it is. But what if you’re far, very far away as an
exchange student or living abroad for some time and it is geographically
impossible to be with all your loved ones?
I know some who will be sad and depressed and who will spend time
crying by the phone causing suffering on both sides of the line and with
little celebration. However, I also know those who allow themselves to
experience Christmas in a different and creative manner. This is the time
to celebrate life, is it not? So if you’re on the other side of the ocean,
celebrate your Christmas in a different style. Have no comparisons and
remember to just celebrate it DIFFERENTLY!
It is a sign of love and care to call and shed tears with a caring “Merry
Christmas, Mum!”, “I wanted to be there with you, folks.” But positive and
healthy is once you are off the phone to wipe your tears, and enjoy what
life offers you where you are. How can I spend Christmas in Australia?
How do they celebrate? What do they think of this celebration? What do
they eat? Do you know? Isn’t there any turkey and crumbly? Good! Eat
it when you get back on another Christmas. In this vast continent there
should be plenty of delicious things to sample. Try it!
For your emotional well-being and wealth of learning, I suggest you
carefully appreciating the moment. Give yourself the gift of having a night
that may not have tangible presents and not many people around. Instead,
have yourself, feeding on good thoughts, learning something new, some
unusual eating, exercising your creativity and ability to be your best friend!
I believe it to be a great gift you being here.
Remember that we always have the power to give the moments
we have in life color and vibrancy. I love Christmas with my family like
everybody else. However when I found myself alone and cold in England,
I decided to bring towards me the good in the situation and ask myself
what were plans B, C and D that could keep me satisfied and find the opportunities that exist there. I found the answer and boy was it worth it! It
didn’t hurt as much and best of all I found out that I can count on myself.
Remember also that the networks we form when we are away become
part of our family. Share your heart which is full of love and peace with
others.
Take advantage to strengthen the ties with those who are far away.
Send that card or email saying all those things that most of the time you
don’t have the courage to do so. The distance is physical, however our
hearts are certainly are closer than ever.
I like to run challenges that make people stronger and because of this I
leave with you a present for those who believe in this game: What will you
do so that your 2010 Christmas is special, different and happy?

CULTURE A LA CARTE
As culturas são intercambiáveis, já diziam os navegadores, ícones das
conquistas pelo mar. E não havia tempestade nem monstro marinho que
tirasse essa ideia da cabeça da turma da proa à popa. Navegando entre a
doçura e a violência, invadiram intimidades dos nativos (e nativas), mexeram com seus modos e códigos de vida, criaram as bases das civilizações
miscigenadas nas Américas.
Os tempos são outros (felizmente), e não é só pelo mar que se conhece
as novas culturas e se interage com elas. Aliás, muito menos pelo mar, digase de passagem. As vias aéreas e da comunicação multimeios, fizeram da
interação um jogo fluido, uma relação tão rápida quanto o click do mouse
pode sugerir, e aí estamos nós todos, diante de grandes viagens sem necessariamente precisarmos de passaporte, quanto mais de velas ao vento.
Falava entretanto de mistura de culturas, para convidar a todos para a
gastronomia dos países visitados. E bota menu nisso. Na nossa terra varonil,
então, um show à parte. Quem poderia imaginar um Brasil sem as pizzas
paulistas, sem a feijoada dos escravos, sem o churrasco dos pampas, ou
ainda sem o pato a tucupi do Norte. Só pra judiar um pouquinho: sem a
buchada de bode lá do querido Nordeste. Ora, ora, convidemos então um
estudante europeu ou mesmo americano (que no plano da gastronomia
não leva nem de longe jeito de brasileiro) a provar nossas iguarias. Boa parte dos italianos que por aqui estiveram, ou aqui permaneceram fazendo
suas vidas, juram de pés juntos: a melhor cozinha italiana do mundo está
em São Paulo. “Punto e basta!”
O mundo gastronômico tem assumido características de rapidez no
atendimento e de praticidade nos serviços. O que é bom. Vem pasteurizando sua culinária como as etiquetas das camisetas sugerem e as marcas
dos tênis mais ainda. O que é uma pena. Claro, claro, os fast foods são inescapáveis por toda a sorte de conveniências que oferecem, mas é preciso
atenção dos viajantes de agora, para que essas facilidades não subtraiam
uma das melhores e mais ricas oportunidades de se mergulhar nas culturas
locais, via pratos. Estar em um país diferente e não buscar experimentar os
sabores, cheiros e temperos das suas cozinhas, certamente representará
uma grande perda. Um amigo meu conta até hoje como foi fascinante
saborear o “tandori chicken” em um jantar em Nova Delhi. No seu relato
detalhado dando conta do sabor contrastante dos temperos indianos com
a cobertura de mel naquele generoso frango asiático, transpirava a Índia e
todos os seus mistérios.
Eu tenho cá meus sonhos de conhecimento de mais culturas. Aprendi
com o tempo a buscar na culinária local as inspirações, desejos e amores
santificados pelos anos nos pratos regionais. Morro de raiva quando ouço
falar de algum país em que já estive e meu interlocutor conta sobre um
prato que comeu sem que eu tivesse provado nem uma garfadinha. A cena
beira a crueldade quando ainda ouço: não acredito, você não provou isso
lá ? É de matar...
Conselho não se dá, mas palpite, vale. Portanto, digo a vocês que, quando os sinais fisiológicos estiverem apontando para aquilo que vulgarmente
se chama de fome, pensem duas vezes onde ir e mais ainda no que vão
pedir. De repente, junto com o matar a dita cuja estará submersa mais uma
grande aventura na terra do descobrimento.

Cultures are interchangeable stated the iconic explorers of the sea.
And there was no storm or sea monster that would take away that
idea from their minds. Navigating between sweetness and violence, they
invaded the intimate nature of the natives, tinkered with their traditions
and customs of life and created the foundation of the blended civilizations in the Americas.
Thankfully times have changed and it is not just by the sea that
we discover and interact with new cultures. In fact much less by sea
let us just say in passing.The airways and multimedia communication
have made the game of interaction a fluid one an done which can be
explored as fast as the click of a mouse. And here we are, all faced with
long trips without necessarily needing a passport or even less the wind
on our sails.
Speaking of the mixture of cultures we invite everyone to enjoy the
cuisines of the countries visited. And talk about a menu. In our land,
there is much variety.Who could imagine Brazil without the pizzas from
Sao Paulo, without the feijoada (black beans) from the slaves, without
the churrasco from the pampas or without the tucupi duck from the
North. Just to add a little more: to be without the haggis goat from the
dear Nordeste (North).Well, well... we invited a European or even an
American (someone who has no idea of Brazilian cuisine) to sample
our sample our delicacies. A large part of the Italians that are here who
make a living swear that the best Italian food in the world are in Sao
Paulo.
The culinary world has taken on characteristics of fast and convenience services.This is a good thing. Some food comes as generic such
as the tags on a shirt or brand names on a shoe.This is a shame. Sure,
sure, it is difficult to escape from fast foods and all the conveniences that
they offer, however travelers must stay alert so that these conveniences
do not evade one of the best and richest opportunities to immerse
yourself in local cultures.That is through local cuisine. Being in a different
country and not seeking to experience the tastes, smells and spices of
their kitchens, certainly represent a major loss. A friend of mine still tells
me to this day how fascinating it was to taste the “tandori chicken” at
a dinner in New Delhi. In his detailed report, he gives an account of the
contrasting taste of Indian spices with the delicious coverage on an Asian
honey chicken that was able to radiate what India and all its mysteries
were all about.
I dream of being able to learn about more cultures. I learnt over time
to seek out the inspirations, desires and sanctified love brought about
from years of the local cuisine. I become very angry when I hear about a
country I have visited and I am told about a dish that I wasn’t even able
to have a small sample.The thought screams cruelty and I become very
agitated when I hear the phrase, “I can’t believe you didn’t try this while
you were over there.” It is a killer.
I won’t provide advice but more in the form of a discussion. I will tell
you that when the signs of hunger occur, think twice about where you
will dine and more importantly what you will select. It could very well be
that beneath having a feed is an opportunity of cuisine discovery.
