Award to architect Nuno Brandão Costa
Secil Architecture Award 2008 awarded to the Edifício Administrativo and ShowRoom "Móveis Viriato".
Lisbon, 26 February 2009 - Secil - Companhia Geral de Cal e Cimento, SA and the
Assotiation of Architects of Portugal announced that the Secil Architecture 2008 Award
was awarded by the jury to Edifício Administrativo and Show-Room "Móveis
Viriato” designed by the architect Nuno Brandão Costa and located in Rebordosa
(Paredes). The award, which is widely recognized as a tribute to Portuguese
architecture, takes place every two years and identifies the most significant architecture
solution being implemented during this period.
Since 1992 The Secil Architecture Award has been awarding works of Portuguese
authors in order to promote the public recognition of professionals that incorporate the
main material in SECIL’s activity – cement -- creating interesting pieces that enhance
Portuguese architecture.
The Secil Architecture Award 2008 jury had to consider 12 works of architecture of
exemplary quality of which the Edifício Viriato in Rebordosa designed by architect
Nuno Brandão Costa was chosen.
With this choice the jury wants to bring to attention two important aspects of the
contemporary professional practice: the discipline, met by the level of the construction
and the design of the work concerned; the social and public concerns in approaching a
commercial program not always given to architects. The jury would like to stress the
fact that placed in a run down industrial area; the award winning building demonstrates
the ability of architecture to transform the environment, one of its founding principles.
As a final note, the jury is pleased that it is a private order thereby enhancing the public
function of such initiatives and its social responsibility in recent landscape
transformation.
The author of the work, Nuno Brandão Costa was born on 17 February 1970 in Porto.
He joined the Architecture Course in 1988/89 at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da
Universidade do Porto (FAUP) and concluded in July 1994.
Held a traineeship between 1992 and 1993 as an assistant in "Herzog & de Meuron,
archiktekten" in Basel, Switzerland .
Received, among other prizes, Best New Talent Award "Jornal Expresso / SIC - 12
anos" in November 2004 and was one of the finalists of Prémios Jornal Construir 2007,
awarded in June 2008.
Among some of his works that stand out are the projects for the Matosinhos town hall,
Caminha town hall, Vendas Novas town hall, University of Porto, and several
residential buildings. There are also several recovery projects that stand out.
