building was torn down long ago, the school
closed and the hospital sold off by the
archdiocese as it became financially impossible
to maintain. We were quite fortunate about ten
years ago when the school closed its doors and
merged with the other remaining schools in the
Ironbound. We made our school building into a
parish center which was a blessing for our parish.
This parish space became a source of pastoral
activities that would have been virtually
impossible with the space we had in the past. So
church became much more than simply a place
to come and receive the sacraments, baptize
one’s children, marry and be buried. Our parish
became a center for Christian living, building
community, sharing faith, growing in our faith.
Our parish is a place to be fed and share our faith
in Jesus. Our parish is a place of service to one
another. Years ago when the “old church” was

mundo que a Igreja de St. James acabou. Parece
que o coração do povo foi arrancado. Mas das
cinzas e e destroços saiu algo novo. St. James é

Esse artigo falou duma paróquia do
futuro como uma paróquia como um centro
pastoral. De fato o antigo lindo prédio/Igreja foi
demolida muitos anos atrás. A escola foi
fechada já mais de 10 anos atrás e o hospital foi
vendido pela diocese por motivos de falência e
foi impossível de manter. Realmente para nós
tudo isso foi dentro do plano de Deus por que
seria impossivel para nós se tivéssemos essa
estrutura hoje. Transformando esse prédio num
centro pastoral foi uma bênção para a nossa
paróquia.
Hoje se tornou uma fonte de
atividades pastorais que teria sido impossível em
outros tempos.
Assim Igreja se tornou muito
