Instituto Camões, over which I have the honour
and privilege to preside, has the important mission of promoting, teaching and disseminating
Portuguese culture and language at the level of
higher education and coordinating the negotiation of cultural programmes and agreements with
other countries.
In its current strategy, Instituto Camões places
great emphasis on contemporaneity. This is natural for the external cultural policy of a country
with nine centuries of history and a language as
old as its borders (the oldest in Europe), a language, spread over five continents, that is third
in Europe and fifth in the world.
At the dawning of this new century and millennium it seems that language and artistic expression should serve the most important objectives
of international progress via new aesthetics and
new dialogues that work like instruments of endeavour, development, knowledge and peace.
Alongside our support of the growth of Portuguese teaching in four major universities in
Moscow and Saint Petersburg (with special mention for translation, interpreting and linguist particularities in the different professional areas),
we wanted to bring the De Dentro – D UKE<BYE
exhibition to the prestigious National Centre for
Contemporary Arts in Moscow and the National
Centre of Contemporary Art in Nizhny Novgorod.
This exhibition presents work from six great artists of national and international renown –
Helena Almeida, João Penalva, Jorge Molder, Julião
Sarmento, Pedro Cabrita Reis and Rui Chafes.
I hope that the Russian people (artists and a
viewing public of well-known sensibility) enjoy
this showing and we would like this exhibition to
be the beginning of a new chapter of presentations and itinerancies of current national values
in the most diverse areas of the world of the arts.
I would like to thank all those who contributed
to this event, with special thanks to the Director
of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in
Moscow, the curators Dr. João Pinharanda and Mr.
Leonid Bazhanov, the Director of the National Centre of Contemporary Art in Nizhny Novgorod, the
Portuguese Ambassador in Moscow, Dr. Marcelo
Curto, and Graça Gonçalves Pereira, Advisory Minister to the Portuguese Embassy in Moscow and
Margarida Gouveia, Cultural Advisor to the Portuguese Embassy in Moscow.

O Instituto Camões, o qual tenho a honra e o
privilégio de presidir, tem como importante missão promover, ensinar e difundir a Cultura e a
Língua Portuguesa ao nível do ensino superior,
bem como coordenar a negociação de Acordos e
Programas Culturais com outros países.
Na sua actual estratégia o Instituto Camões
pretende privilegiar de sobremaneira a contemporaneidade, tendência natural da política cultural externa dum país com quase nove séculos
de existência e uma língua tão remota quanto as
suas fronteiras – as mais antigas da Europa –
espalhada por cinco continentes onde se representa como terceira língua europeia e quinta
língua mundial.
Nos inícios deste novo século e milénio afigura-se,
pois, que a língua e a inspiração artísticas deverão servir os mais importantes objectivos do progresso internacional através de novas estéticas e
novos diálogos que funcionem como instrumentos de trabalho, de desenvolvimento, de conhecimento e de paz.
A par dum apoio ao incremento do ensino da
Língua portuguesa em quatro das grandes Universidades Russas de Moscovo e São Petesburgo,
merecendo as vertentes da tradução e interpretação e das especificidades linguísticas nas diferentes áreas profissionais uma especial atenção,
quisemos trazer ao prestigiado Centro Nacional
das Artes Contemporâneas de Moscovo e ao Centro
Nacional para a Arte Contemporânea de Nizhny
Novgorod, a exposição “De Dentro – D UKE<BYE”,
que apresenta obras de seis grandes artistas consagrados nacional e internacionamente – Helena
Almeida, João Penalva, Jorge Molder, Julião Sarmento, Pedro Cabrita Reis e Rui Chafes.
Esperando que esta mostra seja do agrado do
povo russo, artistas e público de reconhecida
sensibilidade, desejamos com esta exposição abrir
um novo capítulo de apresentações e itinerâncias de valores nacionais actuais nas mais diversas áreas do mundo das artes.
