Gomes’s central research themes are the integration of concepts from constraint and logical reasoning, mathematical programming, and machine learning, for large scale combinatorial problems; the study of the impact of structure on problem hardness; and the use of randomization techniques to improve the performance of exact (complete) search methods. More recently, Gomes has become deeply immersed in research in the new field of Computational Sustainability. Gomes is the Lead PI of an NSF Expeditions in Computing award on Computational Sustainability and the director of the newly established Institute for Computational Sustainability at Cornell University. Gomes is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. Ana Maria Paiva is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Departamento de Engenharia Informática) of Instituto Superior Técnico from the Technical University of Lisbon (Universidade Técnica de Lisboa). She is also the group leader of GAIPS (Grupo de Agentes Inteligentes e Personagens Sintéticas), a research group on agents and synthetic characters at INESC-ID. Her main scientific interests lay in the area of Autonomous Agents, Embodied Conversational Agents and Robots and Multiagent Simulation Systems. Prof. Ana Paiva has been researching in the area of artificial intelligence for the past twenty years, having also taught at IST during that period. Maria Fasli is a professor and the Head of the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex. She obtained her Ph.D. in 2000 from Essex for her work on formal theories of agents entitled “Commodious Logics of Agents”. Her main research interests lie in formal theories of reasoning agents, and the applications of agent technology to e-commerce such as negotiation protocols, auctions, trading agents, supply chain management, as well as trust in electronic marketplaces. She has been leading teams in the International Trading Agent Competition (TAC) which features complex benchmark e-market problems since 2001, achieving consistently good results. In 2005, she was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the UK Higher Education Academy for her innovative approaches to learning and teaching involving auctions. Kenneth O. Stanley is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. He received a B.S.E. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and received a Ph.D. in 2004 from the University of Texas at Austin. He is an inventor of the Neuroevolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT), HyperNEAT, and novelty search algorithms for evolving complex artificial neural networks. His main research contributions are in neuroevolution (i.e. evolving neural networks), generative and developmental systems (GDS), coevolution, machine learning for video games, and interactive evolution. He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games, on the editorial board of Evolutionary Computation journal, and on the ACM SIGEVO Executive Committee. Gui Menezes is Auxiliary Researcher at University of the Azores. He has been working on demersal and deep-water fisheries of the Macaronesian Islands (Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde), and the Mid-Atlantic ridge, for the last 20 years. He has also been working in various fields of the ecology and biology of fishes, and on a broader research about seamount and oceanic islands ecosystems. He is the author or co-author of about 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and of 3 book chapters. He was guest editor of a special issue of the ICES Journal and more recently of a special issue of the Deep Sea Research II. Like other important monuments for the history of the maritime explorations of the XV and XVI centuries, Angra do Heroísmo holds an eminent position in the communications between the great civilizations of Africa, Asia, America and Europe. The port of Angra do Heroísmo served as a link for almost three centuries between Europe and the 'New World'. Vasco de Gama in 1499 and Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1536 set up an obligatory port-of-call for the fleets of Equatorial Africa and of the East and West Indies during their voyages back and forth from Europe. Tour Guide: Maria Ornelas (Art Historian) Tour: Meeting point University of the Azores facilities - 16:30. Visit to the S. Gonçalo church, S. João Baptista Fortress and Capitães Generais Palace. The tour ends in the City Museum (19h20) with a tasting of regional products. Price: Free Maximum participants: 40 Program 2 – Tour to the volcano Algar do Carvão and the island natural landscape You will have the chance to visit one of the most impressive natural monuments in the Azores archipelago, the “Algar do Carvão”. This is an ancient volcano located in the center of the island and we’ll visit the now empty lava chamber. This cave now hosts a number of unique animal species, who became isolated and speciated right here. On the way to the Algar taking a detour to “Serra do Cume” we’ll see part of the typical Azorean landscape, only possible due to the geological and climatic conditions of the island. Tour Guide: Pedro Cardoso (Biologist and speleologist) Tour: Meeting point University of the Azores facilities - 16:20 (departure by bus at 16h30). Visit the Algar do Carvão, caldeira “Guilherme Moniz”, “Serra do Cume” and enjoy the sight to the “rendilhado” (typical pasture landscape). The tour ends in the City Museum (19h20) with a tasting of regional products. Price: €5 Maximum participants: 50 Program 3- Boat tour along the shore, swim in the ocean, dolphin and whale watching (eventually) The Azores archipelago presents a great diversity of cetacean species. This great variety of species, allied to a relative easiness of observing the animals, at least during the summer months, makes the Azores a privileged area for the research of this marine mammal group.
