Domain of specialization
The scientific activity includes both the Pulp and Paper Science and Technology and the
Particle Science and Technology, and therefore the domain of specialization comprises the
characterization of the fibrous and the particulate materials used in the pulping and the
papermaking processes, as well as their influence on the performance of these processes and
on the end-products properties. Therefore, in the last few years, several studies were
undertaken concerning fibres, fines, fillers and pigments. Another domain of study has been
the evaluation of the pulp properties (e.g., beatability and wet-web resistance) and the
structure and properties of fine papers (e.g., formation, porosity, higroexpansivity and optical
properties). More recently, new projects with other academic and industrial institutions have
began, regarding the surface characterization of fine papers and the interactions with surface
sizing agents, coating-colours and inks. Some attention is now directed also towards the
flocculation and fibre flow processes in papermaking.
