17. GOIÂNIA
Goiânia is the capital of Goiás, a state placed in the central-western region of Brazil. It
is a planned city with about 1,300,000 inhabitants and visitors will find lots of
entertainment complexes and shopping malls. It is a modern and contemporary city and
due to its nice weather and parks it has been nicknamed the “Green City”. You will find a
city where a third part consists of parks and greenery, such as Areião, Vaca Brava,
Mutirama, Buritis and the Zoo. The night life in Goiania is quite buzzing with the action
taking place in its many clubs, pubs and bars which are concentrated near Vaca Brava Park
and Goiânia Shopping.
Goiânia exhibits tropical dry and wet weather with an average of 21.9 C. There are
two seasons –the wet season and the dry season. The wet season lasts from October to
April and the dry season lasts from May to September. It receives high rainfall averaging
1500 mm per year. The lowest temperature recorded was 0.5 C in the year 2000. Such lows
are rare, with temperatures dropping to 8 C in the suburbs during winters. The highest
recorded summer temperature was 39.2 C in the year 2001. You can visit Goiania any time
of the year without any concern on the weather. It is always nice!
Goiânia is also famous for its open air markets. You may enjoy it walking along the
most famous:
The Moon’s Fair: From 3PM to 9 PM on Saturdays, this arts and crafts fair is big
(although not as huge as Goiania's Hippie Fair, the biggest in Latin America) and offers all
sorts of regional food, clothing and crafts. The sooner the better, since it's way too big and it
gets very crowded, too.
The Hippie Fair: From 7AM to 2PM on Sundays. Most of the fair’s special happens on
Sundays in the Plaza of the Worker. Nowadays the Hippie Fair has over six thousand
exhibitors. The exhibition has thus almost thirty years of existence. Also noteworthy is the
handicraft sector in its own area located in front of the building's historic old railway
station. Parts made in the loom, copper pots, pottery, soapstone, crochet, liquors, chinapainted hands are just some of the many items sold by craftsman. Joining them are artists,
including some internationally recognized, with beautiful and colorful fabrics. The food
stalls, lots of food typical of the state, spread throughout the Fair that the garment sector
has its strong point. Every fair is covered by a well-popping sound service called Radio
Hippie and providing public utility service since lost documents announcing to missing
children. Below, a skyline view of Goiânia.

18 - TEREZÓPOLIS DE GOIÁS
Terezópolis de Goiás Coordinates: Latitude: -16.4735, Longitude: -49.0797
16° 28′ 25″ South, 49° 4′ 47″ West
Terezópolis de Goiás was founded in April 29th 1992 and it is a small city located 25
km away from Goiânia and 180 km from Brasília. Its population is about 6.500 inhabitants.
After the construction of Ribeirão João Leite Dam, which will supply drinking water to
Goiânia for the next 25 years, the city was inserted in an environmental protection area and
a tourism vocation has risen since then. Ecotourism is a strong economic point and has
directly influenced the life quality of its population. Another consequence is that the local
independent family farmers produce fruit and vegetables without using chemicals to
prevent pollution and other damages to the environment.
Among several other farms, Santa Branca Ecotourism is the most famous tourist
attraction in Terezópolis de Goiás.
