The cervical cancer vaccine with 4 Papillomavirus types for wide-ranging disease* prevention and early benefits * Cervical cancer, High-grade cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia, High-grade vulvar intra-epithelial neoplasia and genital warts causally related to HPV 6, 11, 16, 18. Abridged Prescribing Information for use in the European Area. GARDASIL®(Human Papillomavirus Vaccine [Types 6, 11, 16, 18] (Recombinant, adsorbed)). Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics for full product information. Presentation: Gardasil is supplied as a single dose pre-filled syringe containing 0.5 ml of suspension. Active ingredients: Each dose contains L1 protein of HPV type 6 (20 μg), type 11 (40 μg), type 16 (40 μg) and type 18 (20 μg), adsorbed on amorphous aluminium hydroxyphosphate sulphate adjuvant. Indications: Gardasil is a vaccine for the prevention of high-grade cervical dysplasia (CIN 2/3), cervical carcinoma, high-grade vulvar dysplastic lesions (VIN 2/3) and external genital warts (condyloma acuminata) causally related to HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. The indication is based on the demonstration of efficacy of Gardasil in adult females 16 to 26 years of age and on the demonstration of immunogenicity of Gardasil in 9- to 15-year old children and adolescents. Protective efficacy has not been evaluated in males. The use of Gardasil should be in accordance with official recommendations. Dosage and administration: The primary vaccination series consists of 3 separate 0.5ml doses administered according to the following schedule: 0, 2, 6 months. If an alternate schedule is necessary the second dose should be administered at least one month after the first and the third dose at least three months after the second. All three doses should be given within a 1 year period. The need for a booster dose has not been established. The vaccine should be administered by intramuscular injection. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine. Hypersensitivity after previous administration of Gardasil. Acute severe febrile illness. Warnings and precautions: As with all vaccines, appropriate medical treatment should always be available in case of rare anaphylactic reactions. As with any vaccine, vaccination with Gardasil may not result in protection in all vaccine recipients. Gardasil will only protect against diseases that are caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. Therefore, appropriate precautions against sexually transmitted diseases should continue to be used. Gardasil has not been shown to have therapeutic effect. Vaccination is not a substitute for routine cervical screening. There are no data on the use of Gardasil in subjects with impaired immune responsiveness. The vaccine should be given with caution to individuals with thrombocytopaenia or any coagulation disorder because bleeding may occur following an intramuscular administration in these individuals. Interaction : Administration at the same time as hepatitis B vaccine did not interfere with the immune response to the HPV types. Use of hormonal contraceptives did not appear to affect the immune response to Gardasil. Pregnancy and lactation : There is insufficient data to recommend the use of Gardasil during pregnancy. Gardasil can be given to breastfeeding women. Undesirable effects: Very common: pyrexia and at the injection site, erythema, pain and swelling. Common: bleeding and pruritus at the injection site. Very rare: bronchospasm. For a complete list of undesirable effects please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics. William Dunlop President EBCOG & UEMS Section O & G 18th Portuguese Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology WELCOME LETTER Fellow Colleagues, The Federation of the Portuguese Societies of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FSPOG) was established in 2005, thanks to the joint efforts of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, of the Society of Gynaecology, of the Society of Reproductive Medicine and the Menopause Society. As President of this Federation I am very pleased, in my own name and on behalf of all the members of the federated societies, to welcome you to the 18th Portuguese Conference of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and to the 20th Conference of the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG). The two conferences will run sequentially from 4 to 8 March, 2008, in Lisbon, with one only registration, and the Portuguese Congress will be held in both Portuguese and English. We have exerted our best efforts to provide guests and delegates with an excellent scientific programme, covering the most significant areas of the specialities, as well as an enjoyable social programme in the beautiful, welcoming and cosmopolitan city of Lisbon. The purpose of UEMS is to harmonise and improve the quality of medical specialist practice in the EU. Based in Brussels, EBCOG was set up in 1996 and currently has 33 member countries. EBCOG’s aim is to improve the health of women and unborn and newborn babies by promoting the highest possible standards of care. To do this EBCOG brings together eminent professionals from all its member countries and also works closely with the four subspecialist pillars of Materno-Fetal Medicine (the European Association of Perniatal Medicine), Gynaecological Oncology (the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology), Reproductive Medicine (the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) and Urogynaecology (the European Urogynaecology Association). Significantly, EBCOG has been formally recognised by the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) as the organisation which officially represents European Gynaecologists within FIGO. EBCOG’s core activities are education and training and EBCOG has produced a specialist training programme and log book and, together with the subspecialist societies, has developed training programmes and log books for each of the subspecialties. A programme for ‘Training the Trainers’ is currently being developed. In addition EBCOG has a hospital visiting and accreditation system, via which hospitals can request a visit from EBCOG and, subject to the outcome of the visit, can be accredited for a five year period as an EBCOG-recognised training centre. A subspecialist visiting programme began recently and subspecialist training centres can now receive joint recognition by EBCOG and the relevant subspecialist society. EBCOG works closely with and very much supports ENTOG, the European Network of Trainees in O & G and, in conjunction with ENTOG, runs hands-on training courses immediately prior to each European Congress of O & G. These Congresses take place every two years and the 20th European Congress is due to take place in Lisboa on 4 - 8 March 2008. The 21st European Congress will be held in Antwerp in 2010. Information on the Lisboa Congress is now available on EBCOG’s updated website: www.ebcog.org EBCOG is very keen to ensure that it represents obstetricians and gynaecologists from Europe as a whole, and one of its successful strategic priorities has been to increase membership from central and eastern European countries. Ebcog.08-SecondAnn(ok).indd 21 9/18/07 11:24:15 PM LISBON - PORTUGAL Portugal is situated in the most western part of Europe. It covers an area of 92,000 square kilometres and has a population of 10 million people. It was founded as an independent kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula more than eight centuries ago.Lisbon is the capital of the country. The history of the city goes back to the time of the Phoenicians, then the Greeks and after them the Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire came the Barbarian invasions and in the eighth century, the Arabs started to invade the country. In 1147 the first king of Portugal won the city from the Moors with the help of the Crusaders, after a four-month siege. Since then, Lisbon has continued to grow and develop, all the time celebrating its rich cultural diversity. Nowadays it is a modern city with a wealth of historic monuments and museums, a warm and friendly atmosphere, moderate climate and full of hospitality. It is well worth a visit. 22 Climate Lisbon falls within both Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic zones. Due to these characteristics, there is little variation in temperature, with lots of sunny days even during winter. In March you can count on some showers and mild temperature (around 16oC). What to see Lisbon offers its visitors an endless selection of things to see and do. Both the lovers of daytime outings and those who prefer nightlife will be spoilt for choice. Within a wide choice of places that visitor cannot fail to visit we suggest: - The historical quarters Alfama, Castelo, Mouraria, Bairro Alto, Chiado, Bica, Baixa, Rua Augusta - The Belém Tower - The Jerónimos Monastery - The Discoveries Monument - The São Jorge Castle - The Lisbon Cathedral - The ruins of Carmo Convent - The Santa Justa Elevator Ebcog.08-SecondAnn(ok).indd 22 9/18/07 11:24:21 PM LISBON - PORTUGAL Amongst the Museums - The National Ancient Art Museum - The Modern Art Centre Museum - The Chiado Museum - The Water Museum - The Electricity Museum - The Gulbenkian Museum - The National Tile Museum - The House - Museum of the “Medeiros e Almeida” - St. Anthony Museum - The Folk Art Museum - The Maritime Museum - The National Coach Museum - The Music Museum Around Lisbon - Estoril and Cascais (famous beach resorts) - Sintra (World Heritage site) - Arrabida, Setúbal and Sesimbra (across the bridge) - Obidos, Alcobaça and Batalha (north) 23 Where and what to eat Lisboa is the ideal destination for good food lovers. Visitors will find restaurants with typical food and excellent service, where prices may vary between €25,00 and €35,00. Because of its location by the sea, Lisboa and its surroundings are ideal to try delicious fish dishes. “Bacalhau” (dried, salted cod) is a famous Portuguese dish. Cakes and deserts are also very good. The “Pasteis de Belém” in particular are a must. Made from a special recipe that belonged to a friar from the “Mosteiro dos Jerónimos”, they have been a delight to Portuguese taste buds for over 160 years.
