esta edição da Azorean Spirit,
que acompanha o início de dias
mais longos e luminosos,
convidamo-lo a partir connosco, rumo a Frankfurt,
uma das cidades mais cosmopolitas da Europa.
Conhecida por ser um importante centro

In this issue of Azorean Spirit which comes with the days
becoming longer and sunnier, we invite you to travel with
us to Frankfurt, one of the more cosmopolitan cities in
Europe. Well known for being an important financial
center, Frankfurt fascinates for the diversity of its cultural
and leisure offers, in an atmosphere which mixes the
modernity of its skyscrapers with the charisma of typically
German buildings.
If you for your dream vacations you are looking for
charming and relaxing landscapes, we suggest Santa Maria
Island which, at this time of the year, has a mild climate
combining golden beaches and colorful landscapes, where,
among magnificent bays and coves, you’ll also find the
green of the fields, the white houses, the yellow of the
crops, the dark ochre of the soil and the deep blue of the
sea.
To bring more and more tourists to the Azores is one of our
airline’s main goals and I am, therefore, pleased to
announce the increasing number of passengers SATA is
bringing to the archipelago each year; namely in 2013,
272.664 passengers landed in the Azores.
SATA with its constant technological innovations seeks to

demonstra neste seu trabalho transporta-nos para um mundo fascinante, que não

IMAGES OF THE HISTORY
OF AVIATION It’s with an enormous
pleasure that SATA associates itself with the
book “DO MITO NASCERAM ASAS… Uma
História de Aviação Civil” by Dr. Ricardo
Manuel Madruga da Costa. The book, which
was launched on the 2nd December at the
Salão Nobre do Teatro Micaelense, depicts in
a collection of stamps, the evolution of the
several phases of commercial aviation,
naturally showing the important role that
SATA and the Azores played in the North
Atlantic flight routes. The passion the
author shows in his work takes us to a
fascinating world to which no one will
remain indifferent.
“DO MITO NASCERAM ASAS… Uma História de Aviação Civil”
é um livro pretende mostrar a evolução
da aviação civil ao longo dos anos na forma de uma compilação
de selos, e tem o apoio da SATA.

"Pequenos Crimes Entre Amigos",
o seu novo disco, considerado
um hino ao hip-hop. Antes de
subir ao palco do Ateneu
Criativo, o músico falou sobre a sua relação com os
Açores e, em particular, com a ilha de São Miguel,
que já visitou por diversas vezes. Dessas viagens
guarda memórias inolvidáveis: as hortênsias que
adornam as estradas, as Furnas, o cheiro da ilha, a
Lagoa do Fogo, o ilhéu de Vila Franca e também a
simpatia e hospitalidade tão características dos
açorianos. O músico confessou que teve muita sorte
em poder voltar a São Miguel e tocar para o público
local, afirmando: “É maravilhoso vir aos Açores, não
é fácil cá vir atuar”. No voo da SATA, de regresso a
casa, Sensi levou a saudade que só os que passam
pelos Açores conseguem sentir.
SENSI RETURNS TO THE AZORES Azorean at
heart, Sensi returned to the Azores to share “Pequenos
Crimes Entre Amigos” (“Small Crimes Among
Friends”), his latest CD considered to be a hymn to
hip-hop. Before going on stage at the Ateneu Criativo,
the musician spoke of his relationship with the Azores
and, in particular, with the Island of S. Miguel, which
he has visited numerous times. He has unforgettable
memories of those trips: the hydrangeas bordering the
roads, Furnas, the island’s smell, the Lagoa do Fogo,
the Vila Franca islet and also the friendliness and
hospitability so characteristic to the Azoreans.
The musician admits having been very lucky to be able
to return to São Miguel and perform for the local public
saying that “it’s wonderful to come to the Azores, it’s
not easy to come here to perform”.
On the SATA flight on his way back home, Sensi was
already missing the Azores. Only those having been
here can understand.

descobrimentos portugueses.
Encontrando-se desabitado à chegada
dos portugueses, no século XV, a
implementação de estruturas
habitacionais e industriais, bem como a
circulação de bens comerciais
transatlânticos e de produtos
confecionados localmente, permitiram
criar uma espécie de “cápsula do
tempo”, onde os arqueólogos
desenvolvem investigações com o
objetivo de reconstituir o quotidiano
entre os séculos XV e XVIII. Os estudos
mais recentes têm sido dirigidos para as
ilhas de Santa Maria (Forte de São João
Baptista e Forno de Olaria), Terceira
(Angra do Heroísmo) e Faial (Baía da
Horta).

Desde pequena que se recorda de ouvir música variada em casa da família. O pai toca bateria e gosta de
pop rock. É fácil, por isso, perceber por que enveredou primeiro Luísa Sobral por este género musical.
Mas é, verdadeiramente, a cantar jazz que se sente
como peixe dentro de água.
A carreira é ainda curta, mas está já recheada de êxitos e sinais de que o caminho trilhado é o certo.
Durante a estadia nos Estados Unidos, país onde não
gostaria de ficar a viver para sempre, foi nomeada para
vários prémios de prestígio. Em Portugal, já gravou
dois CD´s, tendo lançado o primeiro, “The Cherry
On My Cake”, em 2011. Além de cantar, Luísa Sobral

She remembers listening to all types of music at home from
early childhood. He father plays drums and likes pop
rock. It’s, therefore, easy to understand why Luísa Sobral
at first chose this genre of music. But it’s in fact when
singing jazz that she feels in her element.
Her career is still short, but she has already known a lot
of successes and signs that she has chosen the right path.
When living in the United States, a country where she
wouldn’t like to live forever, she was nominated for several prestigious awards. In Portugal, she has already recorded two CDs, the first one, “The Cherry On My Cake”
in 2011. Besides singing, Luísa Sobral also likes to write
the lyrics. >She admits she felt this urge because she
thinks that normally jazz lyrics are “too basic”.
She is not bothered by comparisons to other famous jazz singers such as Norah Jones or labels such as her belonging to
a generation which opted for a more accessible and commercial jazz, if this will make her appeal to new audiences.

Não a incomodam comparações com outras cantoras de referência, como Norah Jones, ou rótulos de
pertencer a uma geração que optou pelo jazz mais
acessível ou comercial, se isso servir para conquistar novos públicos.
Há uns anos, foi convidada para atuar pela primeira
vez num festival de música em Portugal. Apesar de
preferir concertos mais intimistas, aceitou o desafio
e admite ter ficado surpreendida com o “resultado
positivo” e a adesão do público. Daí para cá tem cantado em “locais verdadeiramente surpreendentes” e
um pouco por todo o mundo, com maior predominância na Europa.
Gostaria muito de poder visitar as ilhas açorianas do
Pico e das Flores para cantar as suas canções. Enquanto
não realiza este sonho, destaca dois concertos já realizados e que foram “muito marcantes”: o primeiro
decorreu em Madrid (Espanha), onde teve de prolongar o tempo do concerto por insistência do público; o segundo foi em Marrocos, realizado dentro de
umas muralhas, com o público a cantarolar as suas
músicas em coro. Antes deste concerto a cantora portuguesa já tinha visitado quatro vezes Marrocos, país
que muito aprecia.

admits having been astonished by the “positive outcome”
and the acceptance by the public. Since then, she has
been singing “in truly amazing places” and a bit all over
the world, mainly in Europe.
She would very much like to visit the Azorean islands of Pico
and Flores to sing her songs. Until this dream comes true
she would like to refer to two concerts that were “very important”. The first one took place in Madrid (Spain), where she
had to extend the duration of the concert by demand of the
public. The second one was in Morocco; it took place inside some walls, with the public singing along. Before this concert, the Portuguese singer had already visited Morocco four
times – she likes the country very much. In 2014, the
Portuguese singer released her last musical
work. She already has a concert in Turkey on
her agenda. It’ll be her first time there.

bombardeada durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial,
propositadamente, pois servia de ponto de referência
aos aviões aliados.
É o coração financeiro da Europa: sede do Banco
Central Europeu, do Commerzbank, do Deutsche
Bank e de cerca de 300 bancos internacionais.
Sente-se por aqui o forte pulsar da finança alemã e
europeia.
Ponto de partida para a exploração da cidade, a
praça Römer acolhe-nos desde a época do império
romano. Neste mesmo sítio realizaram-se as primeiras feiras comerciais da Europa e, hoje, os seus
edifícios são um exemplo da típica arquitetura
alemã, primorosamente reconstruídos depois da
guerra - as casas enxaimel, com as suas traves de
madeira cruzadas. A Rathaus, Câmara Municipal, é
o edifício que domina a praça. Aqui, onde ontem
se coroavam os imperadores do império germânico, hoje coroam-se os novos “imperadores”, que
são as equipas de futebol vencedoras de troféus,
sempre para gáudio do povo.
Saindo da praça, para norte, espraiam-se diversas
ruas pedonais bem delineadas, que são um verdadeiro mostruário de experiências arquitetónicas,
ora contemporâneas e inovadoras, ora conservadoras. Entre elas, a principal avenida comercial, a
Zeil: ampla, arborizada, com lojas das conhecidas

been awarded trophies, always for the people’s joy.
Leaving the square and heading north, there are several welloutlined pedestrian streets which are a sample of architectural experiments, either contemporary and innovative, or
conservative. Among them, the main commercial avenue,
Zeil, wide, tree-lined, with stores of famous international
brands. We can see bicycles, roller skates, and carefree children running everywhere. And the music, always the background music for anyone strolling on the premises.
The half-timbered houses – with their crossed
wooden timbers, typical of German architecture were reconstructed after the war, are the
hallmark of Römer Square, the city’s historical center.

A few steps away south of Römer, the Eiserneg Steg (iron
bridge), is colored with locks which lock promises of eternal love. This pedestrian bridge was built in 1868/69, is
the perfect spot to enjoy the view of the city’s skyline
reflected on River Main. Looking at the horizon line, the
old and the new meet and mingle in the recovering of the
‘injuries’ the city suffered during a war which destroyed
70% of its buildings. The environmentally friendly buildings, sustainable in their use and capture of energy, are
where the most solid companies in the world have their
offices. The skyline reminds us of what we are used to
seeing in American cities, with the difference that this one
has, here and there, German houses with half-timber.
This is Frankfurt’s trademark.
Using the streetcar, in a few minutes we get the center of
Mainhattan. Steel, iron and glass in the most varied
forms, competing in creativity and height. The
Commerzbank building stands out, it’s the highest (300
meters), and that of the DZ Bank with its heated crown
on the top and the Main Tower, open to the public and
from which you can see the whole city spreading before
your eyes.
On our goodbye to the city, flying back to the Azores, a
last glance. An enormous extension of woods surrounds
the airport; it’s meant to absorb the ecological impact
caused by the intense air traffic. Nothing is left to chance as we can see. Organized. Interconnected.

língua, nas suas mais ricas e significativas expressões,
constitui um dos retratos mais fiéis da alma do povo.
O legado linguístico dos regionalismos dos Açores
está bem presente no livro “Heróis à moda dos
Açores”, obra que nos convida a conhecer as nove
ilhas míticas através de cinco histórias simples, genuínas e recheadas de humor, criadas por cinco escritores de diferentes ilhas do arquipélago.

times, places, facts, people and memories

Rúben Correia, jovem autor micaelense de 16 anos,
foi convidado para coordenar este projeto e escrever
um dos contos do livro, tarefas que desempenhou
com a paixão de ser açoriano e com um rigor e um
profissionalismo que a sua pouca idade não deixaria
antever facilmente.
Sem pretensões literárias, este livro pretende perpetuar a memória do rico património linguístico açoriano e, ao mesmo tempo, homenagear o povo dos
Açores e os seus emigrantes, muitos deles verdadeiros heróis na literatura, política e história de
Portugal.

Rúben Correia, a young 16-year old from S. Miguel, was
invited to coordinate this project and wrote one of the short
stories in the book. He fulfilled these tasks with the passion of being Azorean and with a competence and professionalism his tender age would not easily let predict.

Maria, a “Ilha do
Sol”, esgota a sua
coloração identitária no amarelo. É certo que o clima mais quente e seco
lhe confere tonalidades douradas, mas a paisagem
mariense é rica em outros tons.
Nesta viagem, em jeito de roteiro cromático, descobrimos uma ilha com duas geomorfologias: uma zona
de planícies baixas, de maior aridez, amarelada, e
outra de relevos acidentados, com cumes e cabeços
verdejantes. Do Pico Alto, o ponto mais elevado da
ilha, confirma-se esta panorâmica distintiva e avista-se ainda uma cartografia de novas cores.
É de vermelho e laranja que se fazem os inesperados
barreiros de Santa Maria. A mais antiga ilha, formada
há mais de dez milhões de anos, deve à sua origem
vulcânica e sedimentar a cenários de inesperada beleza
como o do Barreiro da Faneca. Este “deserto vermelho”
ondula numa superfície argilosa, ao sabor dos ventos e
da luz, ora mais intensa, ora suave.
Ainda nas cores quentes, prosseguimos caminho para
descobrir, junto do Poço da Pedreira, uma antiga zona
de extração de pedra talhada no Pico Vermelho que
reflete os intensos tons de fogo numa pequena lagoa.
As tonalidades contrastantes fazem parte do léxico paisagístico da ilha. Encontramo-las na Ribeira do Maloás,

Sometimes, it’s the chromatic impressions that
the best trigger and sum up the memories of
a journey. Don’t think Santa Maria, “the Sun Island”
runs out of its identity coloration with yellow. It’s a fact that
the warmer and drier weather gives it golden shades, but
the landscape on Santa Maria is rich in other shades.
On this journey, as on a chromatic route, we discover an
island with two geomorphologies: an area with low plains,
with greater aridity, yellowish and another with a more
rugged terrain, with green ridges and reefs. From Pico
Alto, the island’s highest place, we can testify this distinctive panorama and also see cartography of new colors.
Santa Maria’s unexpected clay pits are red and orange. The
oldest island – it was formed in the archipelago more than
ten million years ago – has landscapes of rare beauty which
originate in its volcanic and sedimentous origin such as the
Barreiro da Faneca. This “red desert” sweeps over a clay surface downwind sometimes more intense sometimes softer.
Still in the warm color area, we proceed to relax near
Poço da Pedreira, a former stone quarry in Pico Vermelho
which reflects intense fire red shades in a small lake.

Convém recordar que é a cor que dá fama à mais conhecida zona de banhos açoriana: a Praia Formosa cartão postal pelas suas areias claras, pelo seu mar de azul
reluzente, transparente.
De regresso aos tons mais fortes, o colorido das chaminés cilíndricas das casas típicas de Santa Maria explica
as diferentes localidades e acaba por contar um pouco
da história de cada povoado e da própria ilha.

watercourse which flows for 20 meters in a bed of black
lava. Even more impressing is the 110 meter-high waterfalls which whiten the foothills of Cascata do Aveiro and
brightens the steep and dark hillsides covered with vineyard.
We should not forget that it’s the color which is responsible for the fame of the best-known Azorean beach resort:
Praia Formosa – with its light-colored sand, its gleaming,
and transparent blue sea.
Back to the stronger colors, the color of the cylindrical
chimneys of the typical houses on Santa Maria explain
the different places and ends up telling a bit of the story
of each village and of the island itself.

meeting Rota das Estrelas which gathered 16
chefs at the restaurant Largo do Paço in
Amarante. To reinterpret the classical Azorean flavors
putting together typical ingredients from the islands in
gourmet degustation moments. The display of Azorean products took place during the Rota das Estrelas festival at
the restaurant Largo do Paço in Amarante. There were
small and original culinary creations – samples of how
the traditional island products can also nowadays incorporate gastronomical innovations.
The diners tasted, before the dinners of two of the three
days the event lasted, creative delicacies prepared by the
Azorean chef Sandro Meireles of the School of Tourism
and Hotel Training of the Azores: pickled tuna in thyme
with yam guacamole and pimenta da terra and a lemon
gel; grissini made of cracklings with dips of Bravo cheese and São Jorge’s cheese; sirloin steak marinated in a S

o licoroso Lajido. “A mostra acabou por ser importante para dar a conhecer os produtos, não só ao
público, mas também aos chefs”, diz Filipe Rocha,
director da EFTH.
O encontro gastronómico de Amarante, último de
uma série de sete, em 2013, sempre em restaurantes
portugueses referenciados com pelo menos uma estrela no guia Michelin, teve como anfitrião Vítor Matos,
o chef do Largo do Paço. Reunindo 16 chefs nacionais
e internacionais, a maioria dos quais em representação
de espaços que figuram no prestigiado guia, a Rota
das Estrelas decorreu entre 28 e 30 de novembro e traduziu-se numa valiosa partilha de receitas, experiências e produtos. “As pessoas querem conhecer não só
a gastronomia, mas também os chefs”, diz Vítor Matos.
A continuidade do festival está assegurada em 2014.
“É o maior acontecimento gastronómico nacional”,
garante o chef.
Na lista de criadores culinários que prepararam menus
de degustação e contataram com o público figuraram
chefs dos melhores espaços de restauração portugueses, como Ricardo Costa (The Yeatman), Benoît
Sinthon (Il Gallo d’Oro), Dieter Koschina (Vila Joya),
Albano Lourenço (Quinta das Lágrimas), e, ainda,
do with a chorizo compote and an Azores mandarin jam.
Everything served with Pico island wines, as the liqueur
wine Lajido. “The event ended up by being important
because not only the public got to know the products, but
also the chefs”, refers Filipe Rocha director of EFTH.
The gastronomical gathering in Amarante, the last of the seven
that took place in 2013, always in Portuguese restaurants
referenced in the Michelin guide, was hosted by Vítor Matos
the chef at Largo do Paço. Between the 28th and 30th
November it gathered 16 national and international chefs.
Most of them representing restaurants which are referred in
the famous guide. “The purpose of Rota das Estrelas is to
share recipes, experiences, products. People want to get to know
not only the gastronomy, but also the chefs”, says Vítor
Matos. The festival will take place again next year. “It’s the
largest national gastronomical event”, the chef claims.

On the list of culinary creators who prepared degustation

It has existed for 110 years and is one of
the city’s landmarks, isolated in the middle
of the square by the same name; this
Baroque building was projected in 1730 to
be a police station. It was only in 1904 that
it became a café. It was reconstructed after
the war, maintaining its original structure,
and in 2002 it was remodeled and
transformed in what it is today.
Red lamps on the counter make it intimate
and welcoming and the walls are decorated
with old photos of Frankfurt. On each table
there is a candle.
In the esplanade the customers who are cold
have at their disposal blankets of all colors
as well as patio heaters, which makes it
possible to have a cappuccino or hot
chocolate outside even on chilly winter
afternoons.

BARBOSA nasceu em
1977 na cidade de
Taunton, em
Massachusetts.
Estudou na Pilchuck
Glass School, em
Seattle, Washington,

entusiasmo na fala equivale
ao brilho no olhar de Tracy
Barbosa. É em desafios que a
jovem artista, 36 anos, assenta a sua carreira e a sua identidade. Não só o desafio de se
reinterpretar enquanto pintora com obras espalhadas por
todo o mundo, como os de mãe a educar em casa e de
lusodescendente ligada às suas raízes. É que, apesar de
já não falar português, é-lhe latente a raiz açoriana, a
descendência direta que começa em Nordeste e em Água
Retorta, terra dos seus pais em S. Miguel, que cumpriram o trilho da emigração na costa leste dos EUA.
Pintou um açor, baseado na bandeira dos Açores, à
sua maneira - “é a abstração de me sentir açoriana”
- mas hoje perfeitamente enraizada em New Bedford,
ganha asas e novos horizontes para o seu trabalho.
Sente-se atraída pela nova natureza que a paisagem pós-industrial faz germinar nos meios urbanos: “Gosto do
sentimento do manufaturado”. As suas telas são disso
reflexo e resultado. Pinta às camadas, para replicar múltiplos processos, mistura fotografia, repete grafismos,
para ingressar na
Massachusetts
College of Art and
Design, onde deu
aulas. Também
lecionou em São
Francisco; foi
assistente em
Oakland, na John
Lewis Glass Studio, e
She is
interested in urban-industrial nature for a
nonconformist reflection. She paints in layers
and in a large scale on canvas and glass.
She considers herself a visual poet. But what
the Luso-descendent Tracy Barbosa likes is
the challenge. The enthusiasm she puts in her words
can also be seen in Tracy Barbosa’s eyes. This 36-yearold young artist’s career and identity are based on challenges. Not only the challenge of re-interpreting herself
as a painter with works all over the world, but also as a
home-schooling mother and Luso-descendent connected
to her roots.
Despite no longer knowing how to speak Portuguese, her
Azorean roots are latent, the direct descent which starts
in Nordeste and Água Retorta, the land of her parents in
S. Miguel, from where many emigrants left for the USA’s
east coast.
She painted a goshawk based on the Azorean flag, in her
own way – “it’s the abstraction of feeling Azorean” – but
today perfectly adapted in New Bedford, she takes wings
and new horizons are open to her for her work.

que tem dos Açores. Tracy Barbosa quer regressar para
pintar o “sentimento antigo” das ilhas.

O resultado é vibrante. Reconstrói um habitat natural,
uma simbiose entre decadência e renascimento de intencional inconformismo: “Ajuda a pensar”.
Tracy Barbosa expressa-se no amplo. Um só trabalho
seu já ocupou um rolo inteiro de tela. A larga escala
explica-se com uma formação de 18 anos em ballet:
“Quando olho para uma tela, vejo uma sala de dança
vazia que tenho que concretizar”. Por isso preenche

Barbosa wants to go back to paint “the old feeling” of the islands. She is attracted by the new nature that post-industrial landscape provides in urban environments. “I like the feeling of the manufactured”. Her canvases are a reflection and a result of this. She paints in layers,
to replicate multiple processes, she mixes photography, repeats graphics, imposes images. Then she softens everything
with the chromatism and the harmony of the oriental landscape imaginary. The result is vibrant. She reconstructs a
natural habitat, a symbiosis between decadence and a resurgence of an intentional nonconformism: “It helps to think”.
Tracy Barbosa expresses herself in big. One of her works has
already occupied a whole canvas roll. The big scale can be
explained with her 18-year ballet training: “When I look at
a canvas, I see and empty dance room which I have to achieve”. So she fills the canvas with large movements and rhythmic brushstrokes of a former ballet dancer and restless soul.
This complex dynamic happens at her house-studio, a
vast loft part of the artistic community of The Ropeworks,
set in a renovated textile mill. It is a condominium meant
for artists, designers and craftsmen. Here they live and develop their vocation. Tracy Barbosa adds the school function
to this, as she has chosen to home school her seven-year

é o que sou. Sou poeta e esta é a minha poesia visual”.
“It sometimes frantic”, she says. But the versatility can be
mainly attested on her art with glass. Tracy Barbosa builds, as
happens on her canvases, individually worked glass layers, for
a unique result. Used as panels, doors, and windows or simply
as paintings, Tracy’s glasses have multiple views and interpretations: “Glass’s subtlety is beautiful”.
Whatever the format, technique or style, Tracy says she is
attracted by art’s inexhaustible capacity: “I like challenges”.
Above all when she describes herself: “To paint is what I am.
I’m a poet and this is my visual poetry”.

Road. “Geppetto was a carpenter who lived alone and
dreamt of having a son. One day, he decided to make
a wooden puppet, which came to life according to his
wishes. – You’ll be the son I never had and I will call
you Pinocchio”. We all know the beginning of the
famous story for children written by Collodi. When
Walt Disney decided to recreate it as an animated film
in 1940, Rothenburg ob der Tauber was the basis for
the inspiration for the village in the film, maybe because of this, there are so many stores selling wooden toys.

A primeira impressão para quem chega é a de entrar
numa aldeia de brincar, onde tudo está perfeitamente preservado, organizado e primorosamente cuidado. Percebe-se bem por que faz parte da rota romântica da Alemanha.
A fundação da cidade muralhada de Rothenburg ob der
Tauber remonta ao século XI. O nome, Rothenburg ob
der Tauber, significa “fortaleza vermelha sobre o (rio)
Tauber”. Rot (vermelho) refere-se à cor dos telhados das
casas, e Burg significa povoação medieval fortificada.
Percorrendo as ruas dentro das muralhas, sentimos que
estamos num eterno Natal, com o casario colorido, as
traves de madeira e os telhados angulosos, preparados
para o deslizar da neve que, de vez em quando, faz a

The first impression for whoever arrives is that one is
entering a make believe town, where everything is perfectly preserved, organized and impeccably taken care
of. It’s perfectly understandable why it is part of the
German Romantic Road.
The foundation of the fortified city of Rothenburg ob
der Tauber dates back to the 11th century. The name
Rothenburg ob der Tauber means “red fortress on (the
river) Tauber. Rot (red) refers to the color of the rooftops of the houses and Burg means a medieval town
encircled by walls.
Strolling along the streets inside the walls we feel we
are in an everlasting Christmas. the colorful houses
with their wooden timber and angular roofs so that
the snow slides off when it makes an occasional
visit. Nowadays almost al the houses have stores or
pastry stores displaying the tempting Schneeballs in
their windows. If we choose to walk along the entire wall, we can feel the medieval atmosphere that has
lingered on. There is a tower we can go up so that
we can see the entire city before our eyes. It’s a vision

Presentes na Bermuda há mais de século e meio, os
açorianos integraram-se plenamente nesse território
ultramarino e autónomo britânico e contribuíram,
empenhadamente, para a construção e desenvolvimento de
uma próspera comunidade.
THE AZOREAN SOUL IN BERMUDA
atricia Marirea Mudd, na sua obra Portuguese
Bermudians—An Early History and Reference
Guide 1848-1949, refere que a 4 de novembro de 1849 chegaram à Bermuda, a bordo
do navio The Golden Rule, os primeiros 58
imigrantes portugueses, provenientes da
Madeira, os quais foram logo seguidos pelos
açorianos que, desde então, têm emigrado para esse destino.
A 16 de dezembro do mesmo ano, o jornal local da Bermuda,
Royal Gazette, aludia à chegada desses primeiros portugueses, referindo que “esperamos que contribuam para introduzir o cultivo
da vinha de uma forma mais proeminente do que a actual.”
Reconhecidos como trabalhadores empenhados e com um grande conhecimento sobre a produção agrícola em pequenas ilhas,
as gentes dos Açores afirmaram, ao longo dos anos, a sua presença
e o seu contributo fundamental para o desenvolvimento económico da Bermuda. Um anúncio, publicado em janeiro de 1865,
exemplifica bem a crescente consideração pelos trabalhadores
açorianos, relatando os esforços do Governo Bermudiano na
adoção de políticas dirigidas especificamente ao seu recrutamento: “Estamos muito satisfeitos por saber que o Departamento de
Imigração iniciou negociações com Benjamin W. Watlington com
o propósito de trazer das Ilhas Ocidentais para a Bermuda (…) um
determinado número de imigrantes”.
Assim, no ano em que se comemoram 165 anos de presença portuguesa na Bermuda, o Governo dos Açores assinala esta efeméride, homenageando todos os açorianos que, ao longo de muitas
décadas, emigraram para esse arquipélago atlântico.
Com efeito, entre 1960 e 2000, segundo dados oficiais, emigraram dos Açores para a Bermuda mais de 6 mil indivíduos. Não
obstante ser, nos últimos anos, uma emigração frequentemente
marcada pelo regresso, é comum dizer-se que cerca de 25% da
população da Bermuda é açoriana ou açordescendente.
Presentes na Bermuda há mais de século e meio, os açorianos
integraram-se, assim, plenamente nesse território ultramarino e
autónomo britânico e contribuíram, empenhadamente para a
construção e desenvolvimento de uma próspera comunidade.
Estão, por isso, ligados à co-fundação e construção das ilhas, dedicando-se a áreas como a restauração, a jardinagem, a construção
civil e o turismo. Por outro lado, a integração social com os habitantes locais levou à constituição de famílias, cujos açordescendentes se distinguem nas diversas áreas políticas, económicas e
Azorean people have been in Bermuda for over a century and have fully integrated into this British overseas and autonomous territory. In fact, Azoreans have
actively contributed to the construction and development of this prosperous community. Patricia Marirea Mudd,
in Portuguese Bermudians—An Early History and Reference Guide
1848-1949, refers that on November 4th 1849, aboard the ship The
Golden Rule, the first 58 Portuguese immigrants arrived in Bermuda,
coming from Madeira. Azoreans immediately followed and have been
immigrating to Bermuda ever since.
On December 16th of that same year, the local newspaper, Royal
Gazette, mentioned the arrival of the Portuguese by stating “we hope
they will be the means of inducing the cultivation of the vine more extensively than at present”.
Recognized as hard working people with a deep knowledge of agricultural production in small islands, the Azoreans soon made their presence felt, and their contribution to the economic development of
Bermuda has been essential over the years. An announcement made
in January 1865, reporting the efforts of the Bermudian government
to adopt policies specifically directed to recruit Azorean workers, exemplifies the increasing esteem of Bermudians toward them: “We are
much pleased to learn that the board of immigration has entered into
arrangements with Benjamin W. Watlington for the propose of bringing to Bermuda from the Western Islands (…), a certain number of
immigrants”.
Therefore, to celebrate 165 years of Portuguese presence in Bermuda,
the Government of the Azores pays tribute to all the Azoreans who,
throughout decades, emigrated to that Atlantic archipelago.
In fact, according to official data, from 1960 to 2000 over 6 thousand
people emigrated from the Azores to Bermuda. Although in the past
few years many emigrants actually returned, it is common to say that
25% of the population of Bermuda is Azorean or Azorean-descendant.
Azorean people have been in Bermuda for over a century and have fully
integrated into this British overseas and autonomous territory. In fact,
Azoreans have actively contributed to the construction and development
of this prosperous community. They are therefore linked to the foundation and building of the islands, especially in such areas as gardening, food, construction and tourism. On the other hand, social inclusion has led to family formation and currently Azorean descendants
stand out in several other fields, namely political, economic and social,
as proven by the Bermuda Prime-Ministry, Craig Cannonier.

De igual modo, deve ser salientado o relevante contributo dos açorianos na preservação das suas tradições. Neste sentido, o dinamismo do Clube Vasco da Gama, sediado em Hamilton e a única
instituição portuguesa na Bermuda, tem sido fundamental para
a divulgação de todo este valioso património linguístico, cultural e religioso.
O Governo dos Açores, reconhecendo a importância do trabalho
desenvolvido por esta associação em benefício da manutenção da
cultura açoriana e da difusão da língua portuguesa, tem vindo a
apoiar diversas iniciativas do seu programa anual de atividades,
bem como de outras estruturas da sua dependência, em particular, da Escola Oficial Portuguesa.
Na verdade, com um número tão elevado de portugueses, na sua
maioria açorianos, a residir permanente ou temporariamente
nesse arquipélago, a língua portuguesa tornou-se mesmo o segundo idioma de comunicação na Bermuda, a seguir ao inglês. E as
grandes manifestações culturais e religiosas açorianas, como as
Festas do Espírito Santo e do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres,
permanecem, naquele território como em tantos outros, como
marca impressiva da nossa emigração.
Também o Folclore e as tocatas de cordofones tipicamente açorianos, como a denominada viola da terra, são hoje elementos indispensáveis em diversas festas como o Portugal Day Parade Harbour
Nights, a Bermuda Agricultural Exhibition ou o Bermuda Day Parade,
do mesmo modo como em celebrações privadas e familiares.
Todas estas expressões culturais, integrando o quotidiano dos açorianos onde quer que se encontrem, são reconhecidas e acarinhadas pelas entidades Governamentais Bermudianas. Tal facto, para
além de valorizar a comunidade açoriana, constitui também uma
forma de reconhecer o seu contributo para o desenvolvimento económico e social e o enriquecimento cultural da Bermuda.
Similarly, the important contribution of Azoreans to the preservation
of their own traditions should be stressed. The Vasco da Gama Club,
based in Hamilton, is the only Portuguese institution in Bermuda and
has been crucial for the dissemination of this valuable linguistic, cultural and religious heritage.
The Government of the Azores acknowledges the important work carried
out by this association in favor of the Azorean culture and the Portuguese
language by supporting several of its initiatives, as well as some activities undertaken by its dependent structures, namely Escola Oficial
Portuguesa.
In reality, and considering the large number of Portuguese, most of them
Azoreans, permanently or temporarily residing in Bermuda, the
Portuguese language became the second language in the archipelago,
right after English. In addition, the greatest Azorean cultural and religious expressions, such as the Feast of the Holy Ghost, are still very
much alive in Bermuda, as in many other places in the world, as an
impressive mark of our emigration.
Also, Azorean folklore dances and music instruments, as the so-called
viola da terra, are today essential elements of many festivities, as the
Portugal Day Parade Harbour Nights, the Bermuda Agricultural
Exhibition or the Bermuda Day Parade, as well as of private and family
celebrations.
These cultural expressions, which are part of the daily life of Azoreans
wherever they are, have been recognized and cherished by the Bermudian
governmental entities. This posture, in addition to value the Azorean
community, acknowledges its contribution to the economic and social
development, as well as to the cultural enrichment of Bermuda.

Norte em 1927, desde cedo
se apercebeu da importância dos Açores como ponto de escala das futuras rotas
aeronáuticas transatlânticas, que ele próprio ajudou
a definir e a cartografar nos voos de estudo e reconhecimento efetuados na década de 1930 ao serviço
da Pan American Airways. Em 1933 visitou os Açores,
onde amariçou o seu hidroplano Lockheed Sirius no
Faial e em S. Miguel, tendo concluído que a orografia acidentada do território vulcânico das ilhas não
era propícia à construção de campos de aviação, pelo
que a única alternativa seria descer os aviões nas
águas abrigadas dos maiores portos do arquipélago,

of the Second World War and the mid 1970s,
the airport on Santa Maria was the main
gateway and exit for international civil aviation in the Azorean archipelago. Charles
Lindbergh, the pilot who made the first transatlantic
flight in 1927, early on realized the importance of the
Azores as a stopover for future transatlantic flights that
he himself helped define and map in his study and reconnaissance flights made during the 1930s while at the service of Pan American Airways. In 1933, he visited the
Azores where he alighted his seaplane Lockheed Sirius in
Faial and in S. Miguel, having concluded that the rugged
orography of the islands’ volcanic soil was not good for
building airports, the only alternative being to alight the

O mundo da aviação, desde os pilotos e pessoal de
bordo às aeronaves, eram os símbolos tangíveis da vida
moderna no pós-guerra.

depois de entregue à tutela portuguesa em 1946, se
tornaria uma referência obrigatória nas rotas transatlânticas da aviação civil internacional, a qual conheceu um crescimento surpreendente após o termo
da II Guerra Mundial. Santa Maria tomava agora o
lugar dantes ocupado pela Horta, mas o impacto provocado pela existência do aeroporto na comunidade
envolvente seria muito mais intenso e duradouro do
que sucedera no Faial, transformando a ilha de Santa

Portuguese in 1946 and that would become an obligatory
reference in transatlantic routes of commercial aviation,
which had an amazing increase after the end of the Second
World War. Santa Maria now replaced Horta, but the
impact caused by the existence of the airport in the
surrounding community would be much more intense and
lasting than at Faial, transforming Santa Maria Island

cinema, piscina, campos de jogos, posto emissor de
rádio e outras amenidades características do “século
americano” a que a maioria dos açorianos não estava ainda habituada.
Para melhor se avaliar o cosmopolitismo experimentado pela ilha de Santa Maria ao longo de três décadas (1950-1970), o período áureo das escalas transatlânticas no aeroporto, é preciso ter em conta que
o mundo da aviação, desde os pilotos e pessoal de
bordo até às próprias aeronaves, eram então os símbolos mais tangíveis da vida moderna no pós-guerra
e, numa altura em que o mundo ainda não estava à
distância de um clique no computador, tudo quanto era novidade chegava de avião, fosse ele um aparelho a hélice vindo de Boston ou Nova Iorque, ou
um jacto supersónico (como o mítico Concorde) chegado de Paris. Num documentário recentemente realizado por Eberhard Scherdl (“Santa Maria
Connection”), que capta muito bem o ambiente singular que o aeroporto trouxe a uma ilha até então
adormecida, há um depoimento do sociólogo e radialista António Melo Sousa que resume de forma exemplar essa atmosfera vivida em Santa Maria na década de 1960, quando a estação “Asas do Atlântico” marcava o compasso da modernidade nas ilhas dos
Açores: “Em São Miguel ainda andavam a trautear os
Beatles e nós aqui já ouvíamos o Jimi Hendrix”.

in a sort of “Little America” in the Azores. Thousands of
people arrived involved in the construction and operation
of the large airport infrastructure which was created there
which included, besides the air traffic control center, a
small city with houses, a hotel, cinema, swimming pool,
a sports field, a radio transmitter station, and other amenities characteristic of the “American century” to which
the majority of Azoreans was not accustomed to.
To better understand the cosmopolitism experienced by
Santa Maria Island throughout three decades (19501970), the golden age of transatlantic stopovers at the airport, we must take into account the world of aviation, from
pilots to crew to the aircrafts themselves, they were then
the more tangible symbol of post-war modern life and, at
a time the world was not yet at a distance of a computer click, anything which was a novelty arrived by plane,
be it a propeller driven plane or a supersonic jet( like the
mythical Concorde) arriving from Paris. In a recent documentary by Eberhard Scherdl (“Santa Maria Connection”),
which very well captures the unique atmosphere that the
airport brought to the I up to then dormant island, there
is an account by sociologist and broadcaster António Melo
Sousa which fantastically summarizes the atmosphere

m qualquer ilha dos Açores é
possível sentir o peso do
Mundo – não o peso quilogramático, mas aquele que é
enformado pela História e
que regride até ao ato primordial do Génesis. Em nenhum outro lugar a Natureza
se harmoniza tanto, apesar das diferenças óbvias entre
os seus elementos, no que têm de força, de solidez e
liquidez, de visibilidade e de aroma. Fogo e lava convivem com a serenidade do sol e das chuvas, com o
bailado dos ventos e das ondas. Um residente adormece apercebendo-se desse peso do Mundo; um visitante surpreende-se porque os elementos da Natureza
estão no lugar certo, ficando explicada a harmonia
que desenha as ilhas e a singularidade da beleza de
cada uma. Em nada se repetem.
Por isso, andarilhar faz cumprir destinos e desígnios.
Os ilhéus sabem disso e cumprem. Cumprem, com
enlevo, o roteiro dos afetos, vigiando as paisagens por
entre névoas e cortinados de bruma, sabendo que,
depois de cada esquina solar, a luz deixará refletir o
espelho do chão. São noivados permanentes entre
incertezas climatéricas e manhãs de inefável lucidez.
Nos Açores, sobressaem patrimónios imponentes
(palácios, solares, igrejas, conventos) e outros que
ligados à Cultura.
Sócio fundador do
Alpendre-grupo de
teatro, foi seu diretor
artístico e encenador.
Tem 36 livros
publicados com
poesia, romance,
conto, teatro e ensaio.
In any of the Azorean islands it is possible to feel the
weight of the World – not the one in terms of kilograms,
but that which derives from History and goes back to the
primordial act of the Genesis. In no other place is nature so harmonious, despite the obvious differences between its elements, in what concerns strength, solidity and
liquidity, visibility and aroma. Fire and lava mingle with
the serenity of the sun and of the rains, with the dance
of the winds and the waves. An inhabitant goes to bed
realizing that weight of the World; a visitor is amazed
that the elements of Nature are in their right places – the
harmony that sketches the islands is therefore explained
as well as the uniqueness of each one of them. They do
not repeat themselves. Wandering around accomplishes
fates and purposes. The islanders know about this and
they comply with it. They comply with love the affection
route, observing the landscapes amongst the mists and
fogs, knowing that, after every sunny corner, light will no
longer reflect the floor mirror. There are constant engagements between uncertain weather conditions and mornings
of unspeakable lucidity.
In the Azores, imposing heritage stands out (palaces,
manor houses, churches, convents) and other that almost
ask for forgiveness because they are so insignificant but

das diferenças óbvias entre os seus elementos, no que têm

quase pedem desculpa pela sua insignificância, mas
que, afinal, ensinam como foi possível que as gentes
das ilhas, sujeitas a tão poucos haveres, cumpram a
sua parte na História da Humanidade com a honesta participação do seu contributo. Porém, vir aos
Açores não é somente visitar o passado, nem tão
pouco trilhar pequenos passeios vestidos de pureza
endémica. Há que procurar ler a sustentabilidade da

After studying at the
Angra Seminar, he
worked in several
governmental
departments all
connected with
Culture. He is a
founding partner of
Alpendre – a theatre
group, where he was
the artistic director
and director. He has
36 published books
with poetry, novels,
short stories, theatre
which, in the end, teach us how it was possible for these
islanders, with so few belongings, to accomplish their
part in the History of Humanity with the honest participation of their contribution. Coming to the Azores is not
only visiting the past, nor going for small walks dressed
in endemic purity. One has to try and understand the
sustainability of each island’s cultural life and understand that, despite the continuous search for other lands
and essays. He has

translated and
published in English,
French, Italian,
Spanish, Croatian,
Slovenian and
Japanese. Awards:

vida cultural de cada ilha e entender porque, apesar
da continuada procura de outras terras e gentes, acontece uma dinâmica que privilegia uma qualidade que
não é detetável em outros respeitáveis pontos do
Mundo. É possível conviver com as artes antigas e as
contemporâneas, sejam elas volumes arquitetónicos,
artes plásticas, música e esse devaneio, tão necessário ao corpo e ao espírito, dos sabores ditados por cruzamentos históricos de especiarias das índias e pelo
apuramento da paciente doçaria conventual. E ninguém pode abstrair-se da socialização dos açorianos,
a qual se impõe por um sentido da tolerância e por
outro da hospitalidade. É permanente saber que nada
se possui porque é sempre necessário partilhar, sob
a interpretação da festa imperial promovida por
irmandades e sacralizada na Terceira Pessoa da
Trindade – o Espírito Santo. São perturbantes os rituais
desta festa, que desaguam inocentemente no campo
subtil do sagrado e do profano. Só o povo açoriano
conhece as fronteiras. Não duvida da sua fé.
Ainda não se disse nada sobre o mar, esse caminho
rumável que leva a todos os destinos. Não se consegue viver numa ilha sem a certeza do mar. Quando
o ilhéu acorda o seu olhar é lá que se segura. É como
se ele fosse um bordão de água. Depois, a solidão
não resiste ao seu próprio sentimento. Ela sabe que
pode caminhar, sair dali e desaparecer como fantasma indesejável. A música é das garças. Tudo o mais
são transparências. A perdição não é possível. O peso
do Mundo não se compadece com o entendimento
do que, afinal, se sustenta da poesia e se cobre com
o manto diáfano do silêncio.

and peoples, there is a dynamic that prefers a quality
which is not found in other respectable places in the
World. It is possible to be surrounded by old and contemporary arts, be it architecture, arts, music or that reverie
so necessary for the body and soul, of the flavors originating in the historical mingling of species from India and
the patient improvement of convent desserts. And no one
can forget the Azoreans’ ability to socialize, characterized by tolerance and a sense of hospitality. They know
we own nothing because we always have to share, under
the interpretation of the imperial feast promoted by the
fraternities and sacralized in the Third Person of the
Trinity – the Holy Spirit. The rituals of this feast are disturbing they have a sacred and profane side to them.
Only the Azoreans knows the borders. They do not doubt
their faith. We have said nothing so far about the sea
which leads to all destinations. One cannot live on an
island without the certainty of the sea. Afterward, solitude does not resists its own feeling. It knows it can walk,
leave and disappear as an undesirable ghost. The music
belongs to the herons. All the rest are transparencies.
Doom is not possible. The weight if the World does not
commiserate with the understanding of that, in the end,
is supported by poetry and is covered with the diaphanous
cloak of silence.
