The Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) has as one of its targets the promotion of research in the
areas of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and is committed to the production of innovative knowledge and to
enhancing its international competitiveness and projection. As regards research projects and activities, the FLUL's
main strategy is to prioritize scientific areas and internationally acknowledged research units committed to standards of
excellence.
The Faculty can offer very good hosting conditions and make available to its centers a wide range of services that
facilitate their tasks and activities. FLUL has in place sound support structures, such a Finance Office, External
Relations Office, Procurement, Legal and Academic Services and a Research Management Unit and can also provide
suitable facilities for the research projects. On the other hand, FLUL's high-technology and logistics resources are a
guarantee of daily support to the activities of the centers.
The strengths of the institution, apart from the structures and logistics conditions, are definitely a highly qualified
teaching staff (255) and a specialized administrative and technical staff (93). This factor can be seen as a crucial
element at various levels, namely in the reinforcement of a national and international recognition and prestige. The
capacity of joining international teams by the quality of the research work, as well as by the professional support that
the institution can provide is very important for the internationalization of the centers.
On the other hand, the diversity of the graduate and post-graduate offers and of scientific areas is a guarantee of a
strategy that valorizes interdisciplinarity. FLUL offers 18 graduate, 26 masters and 19 PhD courses, apart from
Post-doc programmes. In the academic year 2012/2013, the faculty had 3822 students, from which 357 were PhD
students. In 2012, the institution had also 73 Post-docs. These numbers reveal a dynamism that can only benefit a
research environment that considers young researchers an important card for the knowledge capacity of the institution
as a whole. The faculty has also various formative courses and workshops aiming at reach a broader public.
The new University of Lisbon (ULisboa), that became the largest higher education institution of the country, can only
reinforce this scenario. As the Faculty is the only organic unit in the area of humanities, this is an opportunity for its
centers to constitute new networks within the university that can be starting points for other external partnerships.
3. R&D UNIT DESCRIPTION AND ACHIEVEMENTS
3.1 Description
of the R&D Unit
CFUL was founded in 1989. It is dedicated to excellence in research, and its activities are centered on three main lines
of research: the translation and comment of the Classics of Philosophy (LT1), fundamental core philosophical issues
(LT2), and the reflection on societal challenges (LT3). CFUL's MAIN AIMS are: (i) the promotion of excellence in these
three lines of research, by supporting the production of high quality, groundbreaking, and wide spanning philosophical
research by its members; (ii) providing a dedicated environment for the advanced training of graduate students, and for
early career researchers; (iii) fostering the interdisciplinary cooperation with other humanities and sciences, (e.g.,
cognitive science, environmental studies, or jurisprudence), (iv) to promote outreach activities, engaging broader
audiences in philosophical enquiry.
CFUL has had a unique role in suppressing gaps in philosophical research in Portugal. Until its foundation, the practice
of philosophy was erratic (few translations, few specialized journals, scarce advanced training, no European projects,
etc.) CFUL has been decisive in overcoming that deficit, as acknowledged in its past evaluations (very good/excellent);
the peer-reviewed publications of its members; the quality of its editorial work; the advanced training of graduate
students and early career researchers; the diversity of events it promotes; the collaboration in interdisciplinary
postgraduate programs (e.g., Cognitive Science; Ethics, Law and Political Thought); its participation in international
research networks (e.g., the PLM Network for Philosophy of Mind and Language in Europe); its cooperation with
several international universities; the high-quality and number of its research projects, e.g. Online companion to
problems in analytic philosophy, Corpus Lusitanorum de Pace, Translation and Comment of the Complete Works of
Aristotle, or Contextualism, Relativism and Disagreement (the only EUROCORES/ESF project awarded in philosophy
in Portugal).
Since 2007, CFUL has strategically been organized in 5 research groups. This has proved to be most effective in the
achievement of CFUL's aims. These groups are: Phenomenological Thought; Portuguese Thought; Philosophy of
Language, Mind and Cognition (LanCog), History of Philosophy (with 2 sub-groups: Ancient and Medieval; Modern and
Contemporary); Philosophy of Action and Values (with 2 sub-groups: Aesthetics, Art and Religion; Ethics, Politics and
Environment). Each has a minimum of 3 senior researchers, 4 postdoctoral researchers, and coordinates one major
research project, or smaller projects. Each group organizes national and international conferences, workshops and
seminars. The research undertaken within CFUL by its 5 groups reveals the consolidated outstanding expertise of
CFUL's members, in the Portuguese context, and cuts across different philosophical traditions, methodologies, and
schools of thought, profiting from the level of commitment and the quality of training of its members, and of the host
institution's infrastructures. This allows for increased collaboration and shared use of resources. The high standard
characteristic of the translation and comment of the Classics at CFUL and the relevance of the application of
philosophy's conceptual resources and analytical reflection to contemporary societal challenges is made possible by
the excellent level of research on core perennial philosophical issues carried out at CFUL. This research is often
developed in interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in other areas.
For a detailed account of the research results and outputs attained, and of those planned for the future, see 3.2 and
6.2, respectively. CFUL's excellence is acknowledged through the high number and quality of publications (5.1), in
national and international protocols (6.9), the academic degrees obtained, and the outstanding scientific production
(main achievements, 5.2). In addition, our journals have positively contributed to the dissemination and the transfer of
knowledge in their domains (see 6.3). For instance, DISPUTATIO is the best-ranked peer-reviewed philosophy journal
in the Portuguese-speaking world (ERIH: B/INT 2).
CFUL has received several awards, both for translations and for its individual members. In translation: It received four
awards for scientific translation from União Latina: In 2008, Aristotle, Topics, and Russell, Introduction to the
Philosophy of Mathematics. In 2011, Whitehead, Process and Reality, and Husserl, Cartesian Meditations. This
continues a long tradition of recognition (2003: Heidegger, Holzwege; 2006: Feuerbach/Grundsätse der Philosophie excerpts). CFUL's editorial activity has radically changed the national landscape. Indeed, until now most private editors
had a minute, uncritical, output of publications. By contrast, CFUL is now an internationally recognized publisher of
philosophy, with a digital repository in the Univ. of Lisbon and is a invited member of CLOCKSS. CFUL has also
covered a serious lacuna in Portugal by promoting the publication of dissertations. The impact of CFUL's output is
recognized by the increasing number of protocols with other editors, who find in our name and FCT's a guarantee of
scientific expertise, e.g. INCM, Relógio d'Agua, Círculo Leitores, Gradiva, Gulbenkian, Ed. 70, and, in Brazil: Martins
Fontes and Loyola. As to awards to members, V. Soromenho-Marques received the 2011 Quercus Prize and the 2009
Figura do Futuro award. In 2013, T. Marques was awarded an FP7/Marie Curie fellowship, becoming the first
Portuguese researcher in philosophy to secure European funds. Three student members of CFUL have also been
awarded the Essay Prize of the Portuguese Philosophy Society.
ADMINIST/SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION: CFUL consists in a Direction Board, a General Assembly, and an Advisory
Committee. The Direction Board (Director, 3 Chairs, one of whom is the Secretary) meets once a month. The Secretary
assists the Director in the management and implementation of scientific, editorial and administrative policies, and
financial and activity reports. All members meet twice a year in the General Assembly, presided by the Assembly
Board. The main tasks of the Assembly are the election of the Director and Direction Board members, the approval of
financial report and by-laws, ratification of the Board's decisions. The Scientific Board also meets twice yearly in order
to discuss the scientific, financial and editorial policies of CFUL, and to assist in designing research projects. Four
professors, non-members, sit in the Advisory Committee, visiting CFUL at least once a year to analyze the
implemented policies and to write an individual or collective report, providing the necessary feedback for the internal
assessment of policies and management. The permanent secretarial staff deals with daily management, the
organization of events, and other activities developed by research groups.
3.2 Major
achievements
The General Objective of CFUL in the last 5 years was to support the production of outstanding research in Philosophy,
which was implemented in the research projects within its 5 research groups, and CFUL's main aims. The increased
output of CFUL is quantified in table 5.1, testifying the excellence and dynamics of CFUL's research. The list of
indicators in 5.2 clearly illustrates the increasing internationalization of its production and its high standards. (See also
the 10 selected works below).
Between 2008-12, the policies followed allowed consistent interdisciplinary projects benefiting from the diverse
academic background of its researchers. It is by means of these projects that CFUL achieved a number of subsidiary
aims, towards the achievement of its main aims:
(i) The promotion of excellence along the three lines of research, by supporting the production of high quality,
groundbreaking, and wide spanning philosophical research by its members. This has included the authoritative
translation of classic philosophical work. It has also resulted in international peer-reviewed publications in top ranked
journals, and in the successful application to calls for national and international funds.
(ii) Providing a dedicated environment for the advanced training of graduate students, and for early career researchers.
From 2008 to 2012, CFUL actively supported its junior researchers: they took active part in research projects;
benefitted from travel funds to attend and present their work in national and international events; they were provided
both with facilities (reading and study rooms, computers) and the required selected research resources (bibliography,
journals, e-resources). A specific permanent seminar for junior researchers in training was also held. The increase in
the number of PhDs reflects the result of this policy. In 2008-12, CFUL welcomed 11 postdocs and 2 Ciência 2008
researchers, and 21 doctorate candidates with external funding. The exceptional quality of our researchers is confirmed
by the fact that one Ciência 2008 researcher and one IF 2013 researcher are recipients of FP7 Marie Curie fellowships.
(iii) Fostering the interdisciplinary cooperation with other humanities and sciences. This has allowed the development of
national and international joint initiatives and research networks, as testified in the collaboration in interdisciplinary
graduate programs ((a) Cognitive Science, (b) Climate Change, and (c) Ethics, Law and Political Thought), and
international protocols and research networks, e.g. PLM, the European network for philosophy of language and mind.
(iv) To promote outreach activities, engaging broader audiences in philosophical enquiry. This has been achieved by
the promotion and organization of conferences, seminars, and public debates, through publications, and initiatives in
academic and public venues.
The research conducted at CFUL intentionally cuts across different philosophical traditions, methodologies. Thus, not
only philosophical traditions such as the phenomenological movement, analytic philosophy, and German Idealism were
intensively pursued, but also high quality scholarship in the History of Philosophy. Moreover, Portuguese Thought has
continued to fulfill an important role within the Unit's research activity, catalyzing national research and generating
cooperative endeavors that have spread to the Iberoamerican space. Attention was given to the new areas of
interdisciplinary research and the cooperation with national and international institutions resulting in increased
internationalization. (See 6.9.)
In 2008-12, the following FCT funded projects were executed and completed: Annot. Transl. of Aristotle, 3rd phase;
Philosophy, Medicine and Society; Theories of Rationality - Neo-Kantism and Phenomenology; The Question of God:
History and Criticism. Ongoing, in 2008-12, and to be completed later than 2012: Philosophy and Architecture of
Landscape (end 2013); Translation of Kierkegaard's Works 1838-44 (end 2013); Compendium (end 2015); Corpus
Lusitanorium de Pace (end 2015; Teaching/Learning Philosophy (end 2014). Tree successful applications to the 2012
call are now running: Annot. Transl. of Aristotle, 4th phase; Poetics of the Self; Corpus Lusitanorum de Pace. CFUL is
also the only Portuguese R&D Unit in philosophy with a EUROCORES/ESF project, namely: Contextualism, Relativism,
and Disagreements (end 2014). CFUL has two ALFA III funded projects: ESVIAL and OPORTUNIDAD (end 2014).
CFUL also hosts a 2012 Gulbenkian Project (end 2014): José Pinto de Azeredo, Doutrina e Clínica. Textos e
Contextos.

experience and the intentionality of normative action.
We highlight that, through this line of research, CFUL contributes to the post-graduate programme (MA/MSc and PhD)
in Cognitive Science of the University of Lisbon.
LT3 SOCIETAL CHALLENGES
The vast expertise of CFUL's members uniquely qualifies them for the application of philosophy's conceptual resources
and analytical critical reflection on societal challenges. New economic and social models, and the quick advances in
technology and science, require an urgent update of the critical resources available to society at large. CFUL focuses
on four domains:
(I) ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS:
a) The ecological challenges to industrialized nations;
b) The urgent ethical reassessment of multiple solutions to environmental issues posed by the pressures of economic
growth and innovation in modern societies.
(II) AESTHETICS AND PHILOSOPHY OF ART:
a) Aesthetics of nature and landscape, focusing on the intersection of the aesthetic value of places and landscapes and
the concrete actions implemented by Architecture, Landscape Design, and Urban Planning.
b) The ontology of works of art, the nature of fictional discourse and the identification of cultural artefacts;
c) New categories in art: the ugly, the disgusting and the sinister, which are relevant in contemporary artistic
movements;
(III) PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION:
a) Focus on dilemmas created by multicultural, multi-religion and multi-ethnic societies, and conflicts between secular
and religious values.
(IV) POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY:
a) Revisiting the conceptual traditions of republican federalism and representative democracy;
b) Rethinking the social constructionism debate about gender, race and sexual orientation, and the rights and legal
status of minorities in society.
We highlight the participation of CFUL, in the scope of LT3, in the PhD on Climate Change, and in the postgraduate
program on Ethics, Law and Political Thought.
6.3
Strategy and vision of the unit and future management
CFUL's MISSION is the achievement of four main aims: (i) the promotion of excellence in its three lines of research
(LT1, LT2 and LT3) by supporting the production of high quality, groundbreaking, and wide spanning philosophical
research by its members; (ii) providing a dedicated environment for the advanced training of graduate students, and for
early career researchers; (iii) fostering the interdisciplinary cooperation with other humanities and sciences, (e.g.,
cognitive science, environmental studies, or jurisprudence), (iv) to promote outreach activities, engaging broader
audiences in philosophical enquiry.
CFUL develops research of excellence in Philosophy using the full potential of the high number and diverse
background of its members, strongly supporting students and early career researchers. The amazing diversity and
fruitful collaboration among CFUL's members is essential to the completion of its goals.
VISION: Our vision is that CFUL will fully achieve its goal of becoming one of the main philosophy centres in the Iberian
Peninsula and in the South of Europe. We believe we are uniquely qualified to take central stage as the best
philosophy centre in Portugal: a) we are unique in combining a high number of researchers working on the history of
Western philosophy, b) unique in the high number of promising graduate students and early career researchers, trained
at the University of Lisbon, that are already publishing in the highest ranked international journals in their fields, and
attracting European funds and projects; and c) we are unique in the varied application of the resources of philosophy to
interdisciplinary research and to reflection on societal challenges.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES: producing high research in Philosophy, while covering various philosophical traditions,
methodologies and schools; assuring the continual integration of competitive researchers of excellence; strong
commitment with the publication and publicizing of our research products; provision of utmost conditions for
researchers in advanced training; attention to societal challenges by complementing areas which develop the most
challenging discussed in society, never neglecting the present day political, environmental and cultural paradigms
framing them.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:
(a) To continue the regular, and consistent, publication of 4 periodicals, 3 of them internationally ranked: DISPUTATIO
(the only philosophical periodical a in Portuguese speaking country rated by ESF's rank ERIH as INT:INT 2).
PHAINOMENON (ERIH:NAT); PHILOSOPHICA (ERIH:NAT), INTERNATIONAL E-JOURNAL; philosophy@lisbon.
(b) To continue the intervening editorial policy recognized nationally and internationally as one of CFUL labels, visible in
the edition of a consolidated average of 10 titles/year, in any of our available 10 series: Acta, Elementa, Academica,
Studia, Translata, Instrumenta, Aesthetica, Actualia, Estudos de Fenomenologia and Clássicos de Fenomenologia.
(c) To continue existing protocols with independent publishers in Portugal and abroad.
(d) To make publicly available the publications and the scientific events of CFUL by means of paper/electronic
publications.
(e) To establish protocols of cooperation with national/international peer institutions, so as to exchange knowledge and
resources and foster common projects or interests that enable further future work.
(f) To continue projects of critical translation pivotal authors or texts (e.g., Aristotle, Husserl, Kierkegaard, Stein) by
various interdisciplinary teams and partnerships.
(g) To submit projects that will bridge gaps in philosophical research in Portugal to national and international
competitive calls, for instance, the RECEPTIONS OF NEO-PLATONISM in the history of European thought and in
NEO-PLATONISM in Antiquity and Medieval Middle Ages; NORMATIVE DISAGREEMENT; A NON-CONTRACTIVE
THEORY OF TRUTH.
(h) To provide the best possible supervision to graduate students and early career researchers.
(i) To provide the proper environment to stimulate CFUL's researchers to publish in international peer-reviewed
journals.
THE INNOVATION OF CFUL'S RESEARCH, COMPARED TO OTHER R&D UNITS:
We have introduced new lines of research in Portugal, and intend to continue to do so in the following domains:
Language, Mind and Cognition; Environmental Ethics; Bioethics; Climate Change; Philosophy and Landscape
Architecture; Philosophy of Gender; Identity and Identities; Philosophy of Education; Philosophy of Religion;
Iberoamerican Thought. The publications and events in these areas result from a vast number of FCT research projects
funded by FCT, evaluated as 'Excellent' (10 since 2008). Research underway focuses on issues in metaphysics,
language and cognition, philosophical logic, aesthetics, philosophy of perception, philosophy of gender, the value of
nature and landscape, the phenomenology of religious experience, the politics of governance, human rights, bioethics.
CFUL collaborates in several innovative graduate programs: Climate Change (University of Lisbon/East Anglia
University), the first Portuguese postgraduate program in Cognitive Science (Faculties of Science, Psychology, Letters
and Medicine of the UL), and the new Ethics, Law and Political Thought (Faculties Letters and Law of the UL).
In particular, researchers in the LanCog group (Language, Mind and Cognition) participate in the postgraduate program
in Cognitive Science, edit the journal Disputatio, are part of international networks like PLM, have secured international
projects (EUROCORES and Marie Curie/FP7) and regularly publish in internationally acclaimed peer-reviewed journals
(ERIH: INT/INT1 and INT/INT2). This makes the LanCog group of CFUL the best research group in Portugal working in
the analytic tradition, as testified through its international recognition, publications, and high profile.
Researchers of the Phenomenological Thought group edit the periodical PHAINOMENON and research the seminal
incidence of phenomenology in Law, Aesthetics, Psychology and Philosophy of Nature and of Science.
Researchers of the group Portuguese Thought gained national and international recognition with the edition of the
Complete Works of António Vieira, the greatest editorial project ever in Portugal (2012-2020) (acclaimed as the best
non-fiction work in 2013 by the periodical SÁBADO).
Researchers of the History of Philosophy Group include people proficient in foreign languages, e.g. Greek, Arab,
Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish. They coordinate teams working on the annotated translations
of Classic philosophers, using original sources in critical editions. Among their achievements, are the translation of
Aristotle's Works.
Researchers of the Philosophy of Action and Value Group co-publish Philosophy@Lisbon and Philosophica and are
involved in the graduate programs on Ethics, Law and Political Thought , and the PhD on Climate Change.
6.4
Laboratory intensity level of the unit
High
Laboratory intensity level Justification
CFUL has high laboratory intensity, qua research centre in the humanities. Not only does it have an intense editorial
activity, publishing both books and peer-reviewed academic journals, it also accommodates in its facilities a publicly
accessible library, is a community of the Digital Repository of the University of Lisbon and a invited member of the
CLOCKSS
(http://www.clockss.org/clockss/Home).
Among CFUL's editorial works, special attention has been given to update the critical editions and translations of
Classic Philosophers, as well as the edition of original works. The edition of the Classics of philosophy, as well as that
of secondary literature, requires highly skilled and specialized training, resources and cooperation with experts in other
humanities (Ancient Greek, Latin, German, French, English, Danish, and Historians and Archeologists, for instance).
CFUL's library also contains also other publications (books and periodicals) to support the research of its members and
graduate students. CFUL provides for the needs of a wider public by making its library openly available to the public.
CFUL's periodicals, DISPUTATIO, PHAINOMENON, PHILOSOPHY@LISBON and PHILOSOPHICA are available
online (open access; links in CFUL's website). Specific funding must be assigned to the publication of the journals and
to the technical maintenance of their websites. Moreover, CFUL is a community of the Digital Repository of the
University of Lisbon, and all its current and future publications are immediately included therein; efforts are being made
to secure the progressive inclusion of past issues, thereby making our library freely available worldwide via SIBUL.
Our laboratory intensity has also increased due to the excellent infrastructures made available to researchers by the
host institution (FLUL/UL), in particular, access to the European and international databases that the host unit
(FLUL/UL) subscribes.

Contributions for the regional strategy
CFUL is a Research Unit hosted by the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, the largest University in Portugal
and the fourth in the Iberian Peninsula, since the recent fusion of the Technical University of Lisbon with the University
of Lisbon (http://www.ulisboa.pt/home-page/universidade/historia/). As a whole, the region of Lisbon is in Portugal the
institutionally best-equipped region to compete at an international level, and plays a decisive role in the national
cultural, scientific and economic development. Although the region has been included in the group of innovative
European regions, a conscious effort is being made (and the above mentioned fusion exemplifies this) to reinforce local
research conditions, and special attention is given to capturing new opportunities of investment in various areas of
research and culture. The strategies of development are framed by the guiding principles of the program ESTRATEGIA
2020.
In the national cultural, scientific and technological panorama, Lisbon's region assumes a pivotal role, thanks to the
high concentration of institutions of higher education and research (faculties, laboratories, science foundations). Thus,
there is a higher density of expertise in all domains of science and the humanities in Lisbon's region than in the rest of
the country. The existing expertise results from the exceptionality of the highly qualified, yet differentiated,
competences and skills of the researchers in Lisbon's region. This increases the competitiveness between local
institutions, but also the potential for collaborative research, which is beneficial for the region, the country, and has a
high international impact. It is worth mentioning that Lisbon has been recently acknowledged as the favorite destination
for congresses, over other Portuguese and European cities (Berlin, Madrid, London), and even New York.
CFUL, through its members and research projects, reflects this unique situation. CFUL aims to meet the challenges
raised by its vision: to play a pivotal role as the best national research centre in philosophy. This pivotal role is achieved
by making the best possible use of the exceptional background of its researchers, developing new and diverse
research projects (3.2 and 6.6), establishing protocols with international institutions (6.9), protocols with publishers
(3.1), and promoting and organizing events with high impact (6.6), all of which will set new and innovative research
agendas, and thus enhance the humanities not just at the regional and national level, but also at the European level. It
will contribute to make Lisbon a pole in Southern Europe for highly competitive research in the history of philosophy,
core philosophical issues, and the application of philosophy's critical resources to societal challenges, thus also
contributing to the humanities in general, and to strengthen Lisbon's position in the European Research Area.
6.8
Opportunities for advanced training
CFUL has traditionally been sought as a host institution by both young scholars who want to launch a solid research
career, and by researchers who want to continue their research and find in CFUL the best working conditions and
incentive for the execution of their projects. CFUL hosts a number of national and international researchers (MA, PhD,
PostDocs, Ciência 2008, and IF 2013), supporting them in terms of: aquisition of bibliography, electronic resources,
research rooms, and participation in scientific events (fees, travel and accommodation) or field work in archives and
libraries. Financial support is also provided for training, translation and proof-reading relative to papers to be submitted
to INT (ERIH- ESF) journals. CFUL currently hosts 4 FCT Science Investigators , 1 Portuguese and 3 foreign.
One of CFUL's guiding principles is to include in its projects teams, external or internal, various grants in order to
stimulate the careers of young researchers. In addition, we draw attention to the high number of CFUL members who
are advisors of graduate dissertations, Post-Doctoral programs, and, in a considerable number of cases, postgraduates
of other units/departments at the national and international levels.
6.9
Internationalization
The internationalization of CFUL is promoted through Agreements, Protocols and Research Networks, which contribute
to substantially increase the participation and co-organization of projects and events. We single out the following
networking activities:
(1) University of Salamanca and University of Lisbon (via M. T. López de la Vieja, Ethics Research, and L. R. dos
Santos, CFUL).
(2) University of. Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Univ. Lisbon (via E. Otta, IPUSP, and P. Cafalate, CFUL).
(3) University of Sao Paulo and University of Lisbon (via S. Vilela, USP, and A. Nóvoa, University of Lisbon).
(4) Centro de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades, Madrid, and CFUL (via J. L. Mora - Asociación de Hispanismo
Filosófico, and L. R. dos Santos, CFUL).
(5) Vilnius University and University of Lisbon (via R. Serpytyte, CRSR - Religious Studies, and P. Calafate, CFUL).

(14) European Society for Analytic Philosophy.
(15) LOGOS Researh Group, University of Barcelona, and LanCog, CFUL.
6.10
Knowledge transfer
CFUL's outreach activites are carried out as follows: via the protocols and networks with partner institutions, outlined in
6.9; visiting scholarships; publications in national and international journals and by publications in refereed journals or
Studies Series. We aim at developing a fruitful interaction between Philosophy and other domains of science and the
humanities carried out by other research units in Portugal.
The transfer of knowledge allows the rewards of philosophy to reach beyond academic circles by engaging broader
audiences in philosophical inquiry. This is achieved on the basis of the edition and translation of Complete or Selected
Works of Classic Philosophers, Companions, Textbooks, Anthologies, Monographies. According to the structure and
organization that governs each edition, our publications have steadily built a set of referential sources for the study of
Philosophy in Portugal and Portuguese speaking countries.
A recent trend in our publishing policy is the co-edition of works that are publicy recognized by the private sector as a
fundamental and fruitful public service. This policy has produced visible recognition by the critics, e.g., with the
Complete Works of António Vieira, as a great editorial project in Portugal (2012-2020), having been recently acclaimed
as the best non-fiction work in 2013 by the periodics SÁBADO and Público, KIERKEGAARD IN LISBON, published by
CFUL in the list of major essay-works.
The impact of CFUL's output is also recognized by the increasing number of protocols with other editors, who find in
our name and FCT's a guarantee of scientific expertise, e.g. INCM, Relógio d'Agua, Círculo Leitores, Gradiva,
Gulbenkian, Ed. 70, and, in Brazil: Martins Fontes and Loyola. As to awards to members, V. Soromenho-Marques
received the 2011 Quercus Prize and the 2009 Figura do Futuro award. In 2013, T. Marques was awarded an
FP7/Marie Curie fellowship, becoming the first Portuguese researcher in philosophy to secure European funds. Three
student members (Ricardo Silva, Luis Rodrigues and José Gusmão) of CFUL have also been awarded the Essay Prize
of the Portuguese Philosophy Society. (See 3.1., 3.2., 6.4, 'Information in Laboratory intensity level of the unit').

9.3. RESEARCH GROUP DESCRIPTION AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2008/2012
9.3.1
Description of the Research Group
The Gruop intend to establish a philosophical authoritative corpus of the Portuguese thought through the publication of
fundamental texts of Portuguese philosophy; (ii) to generate and publicly promote original philosophical production on
the most significant lines of inquiry, questions, authors and epochs in the Portuguese thought; (iii) to foster advance
research, knowledge, and peer debate on Portuguese thought, developing joint research and advance training projects
with other research units, universities, societies and associations; (iv) to publicly promote within the (national and
international) academic community the works of Portuguese thinkers: organising and participating in colloquia and
other scientific meetings, and rendering available authoritative translations of Portuguese thinkers in other languages.
9.3.2
Main achievements
In 2008, we commemorated the tercentenary of António Vieira's death. We were joined by Portuguese universities,
Italian and Brazilian, and by the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Paris. Congresses were held in Lisbon, Paris, Rome and
R. de Janeiro. These events and the mobilization they created eventually prompted the launching of a formidable
endeavor: the edition and publication of the Complete Works of Vieira (with CLEPUL). After less than seven years, this
working project produced the first results in 2013 - 15 volumes of the complete edition of Vieira's works, i.e. half of a
total of 30. We draw special attention to his most remarkable work: the Clavis Prophetarum, unpublished manuscript in
Latin (1200 fol), coordinated by P. Calafate. The team working in the Complete Works of Vieira includes, from the start,
researchers (a total of 45) from 6 Portuguese universities and 8 Brazilian ones. The translation from Latin and the
publication of the Complete Works of Diogo de Teive (980pp)was launched and 2012 saw the publication in a
co-edition with CLEPUL (his works had remained inedited). The period of Renaissance saw the conception and
inception of a project concerning the translation from Latin, the study and the edition of Corpus Lusitanorum de Pace. It
contains the most important Latin manuscripts of the founders of the modern jus gentium, professors in the universities
of Coimbra and Évora in the 16th century. We mounted a large team of researchers, including recipients of grants, in
Portugal, Brazil and Spain. The products of this work include the transcription, translation and edition of the
manuscripts of the utmost significance - De bello, on war - the first vindication of human rights and the first evidence of
a critical conscience concerning the conquest and colonization of America. The authors are justly acknowledged as
forerunners of jus gentium, the basis for international Law on human rights. The team includes also PhD students of
Painting and Drawing of the Faulty of Beaux Arts of the Univ. of Lisbon, who have a major role in the preparation of the
exhibition and of the catalogue, which will exhibit for all the public illustrated excerpts of relevant text of the Iberian
School of Peace, done in cooperation with Univ. of Cantabria (Santander). The group has also been engaged in the
series History of Political Doctrines in Portugal. The first vol. to come out was on the 17th century (Lisbon, 2012),
focusing the popular origin of power and the right of resistance. We also did a systematic study of the ideas of Europe
in Portugal, with the ensuing publication of a book (Lisbon, 2012). Special and privileged attention has been given to
the relations between Portuguese and Spanish thought. We have thus signed, and put into practice, agreements and
protocols with Spanish and Mexican Universities. We took part in the Master Program in Pensamiento Ibero-Americano
in the Univ. Autonoma de Madrid (2009-2012), focusing common features in Iberian thought, starting with Philosophy
and Literature in both nations. The 1st Luso-Spanish Conferences were held in Lisbon in 2009, and the proceedings
published in Madrid in 2012. We also authored a considerable number of articles and book chapters, published in
Spain. In Brazil, we lectured post-graduation seminars (UERJ and UFSJ), and also published a considerable number of
articles. The contemporary period has mainly been researched by means of courses and intensive seminars conducted
by young researchers on Leonardo Coimbra, José Marinho, Agostinho da Silva and Fernando Pessoa. Two inter.
congress. were held on F. Pessoa: "Olhares Europeus sobre Fernando Pessoa"(2009/procd. 2012) and "Pessoa,
Nietzsche e Freud" (2011, procd. 2012), the celebration of the centenary of the publication of Orpheu (1915) is being
actively prepared, giving continuation to the research on F. Pessoa. Two further international conferences were held
dedicated to Teixeira de Pascoaes and Agostinho da Silva.

9.5.1
Structure of the Research Group
The core team of the Group of Portuguese Thought reunites 3 senior researchers: Pedro Calafate, Paulo A. E. Borges
and António Moreira Teixeira, joined by a number of young PhDs in advanced formation. P. Calafate focuses on
Portuguese Philosophy in the Middle Ages and in the Modern Ages (13th-18th cent.); P. Borges focuses on
Contemporary Philosophy (19th-20th cent.); and A. M. Teixeira on Philosophy of Education. The young researchers in
formation are mainly focused on contemporary philosophy and play a major and decisive role in lecturing Permanent
Seminars on Portuguese Philosophers of the 19th and 20th centuries. A considerable part of this work is carried out in
partnership, by agreement with other Universities or with other Research Units sponsored by FCT (among others,
CLEPUL).
9.5.2
Objectives of the Research Group
Tasks to be carried out, in continuation or conclusion of previous work
- The edition of the Compl. Works of António Vieira (30 vols.), the result of the work of over 40 researchers from 14
Universities in Portugal and in Brazil. With 15 volumes now published, another 15 will come out between 2015 and
2020. The work is carried pout in partnership with CLEPUL, with the coordination and co-edition shared by P. Calafate
and J E Franco, and is being published by Círculo de Leitores. In 2015, Loyola, the Brazilian publisher from S. Paulo,
starts the publication of the Works also in 30 vols.
- Elaboration and publication of a Dictionary of Vieira, profiting from the dynamics of the work carried out in the edition
of the Compl. Works, congregating more than 40 Portuguese and Brazilian researchers, coordinated by P. Calafate
and J E Franco.
- An anthology illustrating the thought of António Vieira will be elaborated and translated into the main European
languages, under the same coordination
- The História das Doutrinas Políticas em Portugal continues with the publication of the vol. dedicated to the 14th-17th
cent. (2017) and the one dedicated to the 18th cent. (2020).
- The 5 scheduled volumes of the Corpus Lusitanorum de Pace will be published in 2015-2017, with texts form
professor of the Univ. of Coimbra and Évora in the 16th-17th cent., materializing the critical awareness of the conquest
and colonization of America, thus gaining their status of forefathers of the modern Law of the peoples.
- The exhibit of the thematic boards on the Iberian School of Peace is scheduled for 2015. It includes a selection of
paradigmatic texts and the drawings and graphics are produced by PhD students of the Faculty of Beaux Arts of the
Univ. of Lisbon. Venues for the exhibit: Univ. of Lisbon, Univ. of Cantábria, Federal Univ. of Amazonas and Catholic
Univ. of Rio de Janeiro.
- The accompanying catalogue to the exhibit 'Iberian School of Peace' will be a trilingual edition - Portuguese, Spanish
and English, published by Campus Internacional da Universidade de Cantabria (Santander), in partnership with CFUL
in 2015 (design and graphics: PhD students of the course in Design and Communication of the Faculty of Beaux Arts of
the Univ. of Lisbon).
Future ventures and projects;
- In partnership with CLEPUL, CFUL will apply for funding for a Project concerning the study and edition of the
Complete Works of the Marquis de Pombal (32 vols.). it comprises the writings of the Marquis de Pombal and also
other works which circumscribed and defined the content of Enlightened Despotism in the 18th century in Portugal,
works that were commissioned by the Marquis or directly inspired by him. To be carried out in 2015-20.
- The relation between Philosophy and Poetry will bring into evidence the philospohical thought of Fernando Pessoa,
on the occasion of the centenary of the magazine Orpheu (1915). The dynamics of the celebration will also profit from
the strong working relations we keep with Brazilian Univ.
- New courses on Reading and Commentary, under the coordination of P. Borges, will be permanently opened, to be
held twice a year. They will be the content of the Permanent Seminar of Portuguese Thought, which has already held
sessions in the period 2008-2013. Each course involves the edition of the work(s) to be studied, planned as research
aid for the course, a procedure that has also been performed in previous editions of the Permanent Seminar.
- The application for a new project, in partnership with Asociación de Hispanismo Filosófico (Madrid/Salamanca)
concerning La Ibéria entre Europa e Iberoamérica, will be prepared. It results from previous partnerhip and evaluation
of the work done on the Project Filosofia y Literatura en la Península Ibérica (Madrid/Lisboa-2009).

9.3. RESEARCH GROUP DESCRIPTION AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2008/2012
9.3.1
Description of the Research Group
Philosophy of action and of values is a privileged group in the sense that it is oriented to the study of the societal
challenges contemplated in the "Horizon 2020 program". It has as its main goal to reflect upon the current conditions
that urge Philosophy to take a stand and try to give new answers to the relation between man and the technical
achievements of the last two centuries. Ethics, Politics, Environ. Philosophy, Aesthetics and Philos. of Art, as well as
Philos. of Religion are the areas that the group researches and they all have a word to say about the way man stands
in society and which are the challenges he has to face and surpass.
Beyond the global problem and the philosophical items just described this research group has focused its attention in
two projects directly supported by FCT. These are two long term projects which achievements go far beyond the period
in appreciation (2008-2012).
A. Kierkegaard's works translation:The primary aim of the project is to publish the works of Kierkegaard in Portuguese
translations from the original Danish text, with notes and introd.; and also, to hold workshops and conferences by
national and international experts, open to the research team, consultants and further public. The CFUL translations
aim at keeping present, as they stand in the original text, the three orders of complex categories which conflate in
Kierkegaard's writing - the aesthetic, the ethic and the religious. Contrariwise to a significant number of transl. in other
languages, the aim of the project is not only to render the original text in its accurate philosophical and theological
terminology and context, but also to deliver the philosophical dignity which the esthetical categories actually present in
the architecture of Kierkegaard's thought.Beyond the two translated works that are indicated in the Report, in 2013 was
published Kierkegaard's work Either/Or (Ou-Ou.Lx: Relógio d'Água. 2013. In 2014: Prefácios. To be published betw.
2015-2020: O Conceito de Angústia; Ou-Ou. II ; Discursos Edificantes/1844; Sobre o Conceito de Ironia: Sobre
Andersen; Estádios no Caminho da Vida.
Permanent Seminar on Kierkegaardian Studies.
B. Philosophy and Landscape Architecture
The project Philosophy and Landscape Architecture assumes the pressing interest of an approach to the Landscape as
a synthetic category that, recognizing the symbiosis between the horizontality of the visible surfaces and the depth of
invisible processes, surpasses the more restricted notions of ´territory´ and 'environment´, with which it should not be
confounded. Between the inapprehensible totality indicated by the idea of Nature and the dispersed singularity of
natural elements, the Landscape category occupies the mediation place of a concrete totality containing in itself not
only all the natural dimensions, but also a human trace. Landscape Studies are lacking of interdisciplinary approaches.
So, the specificity of this Project lies on the previously unseen conjunction between philosophy and landscape
architecture, different areas of study, converging on the consideration of the Landscape as a total and integrated
phenomenon. This Project sustains itself on a strict and well-founded collaboration that has taken place over the last
years between the CFUL and the Prof. C.Cabral Landscape Architecture Studies Centre. This collaboration has been
taking place at such levels as teaching, thesis supervision, and research, resulting in joint publications and seminars.
In 2013 the following books will be published:
Filosofia e Arquitectura da Paisagem. Intervenções. Ed. A. V. Serrão,Lx:CFUL, 2013.
A.V. Serrão, Filosofia da Paisagem. Estudos,Lx:CFUL, 2013. Between 2015-20: M.T. Teixeira, ed.Philosophy and

9.5. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH GROUP 2015/2020
9.5.1
Structure of the Research Group
Group Coordinator: Viriato Soromenho-Marques
Seniors researchers: 18
The group will shelter postgraduate students (Master, PhD, Postdoc) so that they may have a comprehensive and
sound environment in which they can improve their research.
The group, coordinated as a whole by Viriato Soromenho-Marques, is organized in the following areas:
1. Ethics, both in its philosophical tradition and in its applied forms (Environmental Ethics and Bioethics). The main
problems to be discussed are: the ecological dilemmas of the industrialized societies and the necessity to assess, from
an ethical point of view, the efficiency of many technical solutions for environmental problems, bearing in mind the
needs of the so called "innovative societies".
2. Aesthetics, with special incidence in Nature and Landscape Aesthetics, by means of which the aesthetical value of
places will be crossed with concrete practices in domains like Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urbanism and
Economics.
3. Philosophy of Art, whose task is to determine conceptually the status of the cultural artefacts, as well as to research
new categories as ugliness, revulsion and the sinister that became relevant in the artistic thought nowadays.
4. Philosophy of Religion, that must take a stand about the dilemmas originated in multicultural societies, where one of
the tension focus concerns the conflict between religious and secular values.
5. Political Philosophy, revisiting the conceptual traditions of the republican federalism and of the representative
democracy.
6. Translation of Kierkegaard's complete work.
Each subgroup will have a coordinator whose task is to organize particular activities, although the possibility of larger
meetings of this group researchers (for instance, environmental ethics and political philosophy) or with other groups (for
instance, when it is at stake the work of a philosopher or a problem transversal to the Centre) may be studied.
In terms of publications the researchers will be encouraged to publish in peer-reviews, not only in Philosophica (Ed.
Adriana Serrão) and philosophy@lisbon (Ed.Carlos J Correia), but also in other philosophy international reviews.
All the members of this group as a whole will have two meetings each year being one of them a Scientific Conference.
9.5.2
Objectives of the Research Group
A. The research group will develop the following projects: 1.Political Trends in Modernity: The Plural Experiments of
Republicanism and Federalism in the Western World. The philosophical grounds for the European Integration has
received growing attention as a political problem, given its importance in highly relevant democracies and its presence
in structural and functional aspects of the European Union. Nevertheless, a full comprehension of federalism is
inseparable from an appropriate understanding of its historical roots and conceptual meaning. This project addresses
such need, seeking to explain how federalism evolved in the history of political thought, what doctrines, ideas, debates
and core elements define its nature, and in what ways federalism can be an useful answer to some of the most
pressing issues of modernity.
2.Another area is Environmental Ethics in which technical development is questioned and new solutions are given for
the problems raised by it. The following research project will give some answers to those questions: Personal identity in
the technological era. This project aims to identify the main threats to personal identity that have their source in the
present development of biotechnology, namely genetic engineering, which can jeopardize the individual and specific
integrity of human being. Trans and post-humanism will be analysed and the ethical value of their positive eugenic
proposals questioned. Behaviour engineering will also be analysed by means of Neuroethics so that the potentiation of
human capacities by chemical substances and the personality disorders that they may produce can be questioned. At
the end consequences will be drawn for individual freedom as well as for the political effects of these practices for
equity and social justice.
3. Kierkegaard and Bioethics (Transferring Kierkegaard's view of death, anxiety, passion, and happiness to the debate
about Health). The main goal of this project is to highlight Kierkegaard's contribution to a better understanding of the
concepts enunciated in the title, as they are viewed today by health practices. It is an interdisciplinary research in which
a variety of collaborators with scientific backgrounds in Psychiatry, Palliative Care, Existential Psychology, Sociology,
Phenomenology, and Psychoanalysis are invited to participate. We also continue with the translation of Kierkegaard's
works.
4.Contemporary Ethics problems: Practical Ethics and narrative This project has as its prior goal to analyse the
contemporary ethical problems and dilemmas by means of literary and cinematographic narratives that were important
cultural evidences during the XXth century. Following Ricoeur's hermeneutic presupposition that all interpretation of a
literary work is, most of all, a self-interpretation, the dilemmatic nature of certain issues as abortion, euthanasia,
biotechnology, animals rights, environmental problems, as well as multiculturalism, feminist ethics and business ethics
will be highlighted.
How to introduce aesthetic quality landscapes in big metropolis is another huge challenge, which will be faced by a
research project on Landscape Aesthetics:
5.Landscape Aesthetics: Landscape and the City This project has as its central goal to make an approach to the
classical categories of the beauty and the sublime, but also to the new categories of the ugly and the sinister as they
belong nowadays to the city spaces. The value of heritage and the role memory plays in building a space where nature
is also present will be taken into account.
6.Multiculturalism and conflicts between religious and secular values. Analysis, in the domain of Philosophy of Religion,
of the assumptions held by the different forms of fundamentalism in all religions.

9.3. RESEARCH GROUP DESCRIPTION AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2008/2012
9.3.1
Description of the Research Group
The main concern of the group was to develop new research in the following fields:
1. Epistemology of the natural and exact sciences, from a phenomenological point of view.
In this particular field of research, we tried to address fundamental questions about the philosophy of mathematics and
physics. Namely, the questions about Husserl's epistemology of physics and mathematics, as well as the relation of
both to the ontology of life-world, were central points of study, profiting from the recent translation, by the group, of
Husserl's The Crisis of European Sciences and Phenomenology. Direct debates with philosophers of mathematics and
with physicists were another central tool.
2. Phenomenology of the juridical experience and theory of values.
Regarding this field, the group intend both to return to the old phenomenological tradition in law studies (Reinach,
Kaufmann, Schreier, Gerhardt Husserl), and to develop new research. The central point was the theory of norm and its
relation to axiology. We intended to develop a phenomenological description of the conscience of norm, complementing
phenomenological theory of doxic acts with a phenomeno¬logical theory of "nomic" acts, exploring the proximity
between norm and judgment, as well as its differences. Regarding axiology, the old phenomenological analysis by
Scheler constituted a central reference point. The relationship between judgments of value and norms was an issue of
central importance. Attention to more recent developments in philosophy of law was also paid, namely to the work of
the argentinien phenomenologist Carlos Cossio, and to the protuguese tradition, for instance, Cabral de Moncada and
António Brandão.
3. Phenomenology of the aesthesical (sensory) experience.
Regarding sensuous experience, the group has an interest in questions that cross several fields, like aesthetics,
philosophy of mind, intentionality, and the problematic of passivity. These questions concern the description of the
sensuous or aesthesical consciousness as such. As a level underlying intentional consciousness, the problems
concerning sensuous experience open to deep issues about the fundamental structures of consciousness and
experience. The problems of phenomenal consciousness, the description of the noetic content of passivity, the
pleasure and displeasure involving sensing, point directly to the theory of intentionality, to philosophy of mind, and to
aesthetics in a narrow sense. So, aesthetics was treated as a crossroads where different fields meet together around
central issues.
4. Neo-kantianism and Phenomenology.
The relation between Phenomenology and several authors of the neo-Kantian tradition, especially Paul Natorp and
Ernst Cassirer, was a direction of research which enrich the debate between Phenomenology and other thinkers of the
early 20th century. The questions addressed had to do with the status and form of a transcendental philosophy, with
the question of modernity, the question about the relationship between philosophy and psychology, and mostly about
anthropology.
Besides that, a second aim of the group was the translation into Portuguese of several works by Edmundo Husserl and
Martin Heidegger. In close connection with it, the group supported the publication of a specialized journal, named
Pheinomenon - A Phenomenological Journal. The several issues reunited contributions by the group embers and by a
great set of international specialists. As a result, Phainomenon was index in the short list of 500 world-wide journal in
the field of Philosophy (category C), by the European Science Foundation.
9.3.2
Main achievements
The group attained several important results in its 4 head-fields of research.
Regarding the first, the group produced 12 papers and 2 books, published in international and national journals and
publishing houses. It also organized a colloquium in Azores about Space, Time, and Becoming. This was a first
meeting of philosophers and physicists, discussing questions about the foundations of quantum physics. We foresee
more meetings in 2014 and in the years between 2015 and 2020.
Regarding the second, the group produced 20 papers and 2 books, published in international and national journals and
publishing houses. The group organized also two colloquia, one at Azores and the other at Lisbon. The questions
addressed encompass law studies, political issues, and the history of juridical thinking in Portugal.
Concerning the third, the group produced 10 papers and 1 book, all edited in national journals and publishing houses.
The group also organized two colloquia in Azores, about philosophy of the senses and sentiments, and about the
relationship between philosophy and music.
Concerning the fourth, the group published 19 papers in international journals, and 1 in a national journal. In addition,
the group published a book.
Our main objectives were (almost) fully attained. We produced research in all the fields we have chosen. We published
several papers in international journals. In addition, 3 of the 4 books were published abroad, namely in Spain
(Fenomenología del Tiempo y de la Percepcíon), Italy (False e vere alternative nella teoria della giustizia. Lezioni
napoletane di filosofia del diritto), and in England and the USA (Existential Utopia: New Perspectives on Utopian
Thought). As a consequence, the group has now new results in its three fields of research.
Additionally, the group organized and maintained a cycle of conferences by outstanding national and international
scholars in phenomenology. This cycle developed under the general title "Permanent Seminar in Phenomenology".
Finally, the journal Phainomenon, sponsored by the Centre of Philosophy, has become a central tool for the expansion
of our activities.

9.5. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH GROUP 2015/2020
9.5.1
Structure of the Research Group
The group has a strong commitment to Phenomenology in a Husserlian brand. From the point of view of Husserl's
transcendental phenomenology, the Group intends to develop original research in the fields and issues of the actual
philosophical debates. The directions opened by Heidegger are another guiding thereat to other researchers. In
addition, fundamental issues in the philosophy of science, namely the epistemology of physics, are another main
concern which has been, and will be in the future, carried out by means of a close collaboration between philosophers
and physicists belonging to other national and foreign universities. At last, issues concerning normativity,
encompassing questions on ethics, right, as well as the ontology of normativity as such, join together professional
philosophers and researchers of other scientific institutions whose core formation is the theory of right and law.
Besides that, the group has a strong editorial activity encompassing (i) translations of works by Husserl and Stein; (ii) a
phenomenological journal, and (iii) publication of monographic studies.
II - Main fields of research
So, there are 4 main areas: (I) cognition, (II) philosophy of science, and (III) theory of action in the framework of
normativity (iv) edition.
(I) Cognition:
(a) Theory of Eidetic Reduction in Phenomenology: the twofold nature of a priori knowledge; synthetic a apriori material
knowledge and analytic, formal knowledge; the theories of material regions and formal categories; the nature of
apriority and the ontological commitments of phenomenology: a priori and eidos.
(b) Phenomenology of consciousness: intentionality; the theory of constitution: active and passive layers of
intentionality; self-consciousness as an intentionality of second order or as a first order pre-reflective, non-transitive
consciousness.
(c) Fundamental ontology: the question about the relationship between being and language; non-apophantic discourse
and the search for its relevance as a discloser of a pre-understanding of the sense of being.
(II) Philosophy of science:
(a) The perceptual world (life-world) and the object of physics: idealization as an operation made upon the objects of
perceptual acquaintance: its possibility and justification; the idea of an exact nature as the correlate of mathematized
physics.
(b) The classical presuppositions of physics challenged by quantum mechanics: the exactness and full determinability
of physical objects in a phenomenological rendering, by means of the concept of life-world.
(III) Action and normativity
(a) The phenomenological description of action: responsiveness and responsibility; the construction of the self:
habitually and decision in the monadological subjectivity; the problem of the constitution of higher-order subjects in
social and political action.
(b) Normativity: the status of prescriptive statements; forms of normativity: ethical, juridical, instrumental; the state and
the law: phenomenology of juridical experience and the intentionality of nomothetic acts, as opposed to the
intentionality of thetic acts: duction (guidance) versus belief.
III - Overall structure
Researchers in the group are distributed through the 4 areas above, producing research in at least one of them.
We have:
1. One annual final meeting to define the objectives for the next year
2. 1 meeting every 3 months to report the activity developed
3. A Permanent seminar, 5 times per year
4. A close inspection of the doctorate and post-doctoral students, based on written reports and oral presentations of
their work

9.3. RESEARCH GROUP DESCRIPTION AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2008/2012
9.3.1
Description of the Research Group
The main task of the team 'History of Philosophy' (GHF) is to carry on in-depth research on fundamental themes of the
philosophical thought of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Modern Age and the Contemporary Age.
In each of these areas, special attention has been given to the following domains: Plato; Aristotle and Ancient
Aristotelism; Renaissance Philosophy; 17th-century Rationalist Philosophy (Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz); kant,
Enlightment and German Idealism; the Hermeneutic Tradition in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Since the Foundation of CFUL, several projects in these domains have been carried out within the frame established
by FCT, with the evaluation of 'excellent' and with recommendation for funding by the international evaluation panels.
Next to the aforementioned domains, other projects of excellence focusing the Teaching and Feminine Philosophy
have been executed, with funds from FCT, internal funding and also with EU funds.
The results of research are public in the publication of innumerous articles in peer reviewed periodicals, in books and
chapters of books of international circulation, and in the submission and delivery of papers in international scientific
events.
The GHF supports the production of referential Works which have sustained national and international research in the
areas of the History of Philosophy, such as sectorial histories of philosophy, anthologies, bibliographical indexes,
publication of proceedings of conferences, symposia and seminars, as well as academic dissertations and original
essays elaborated by its members. The GHF also edits 2 peer-reviewed periodicals: Philosophica (paper; most
numbers also online) and philosophy@lisbon (online).
The Translation of Classics is one of its most important tasks. The Translation of the Complete Works of Aristotle
should be highlighted. Edited by CFUL in partnership with Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, since 2004, within the
framework of a project funded by FCT, it published 11 volumes so far (see edition plan in
http://www.obrasdearistoteles.net). Subsequently, these editions have been published in Brazil by Martins Fontes since
2011, thanks to a protocol signed by CFUL with the Brazilian publishing house.
The GHF actively supports the qualification of young researchers in the area of the History of Philosophy. Every year,
its members offer seminars and course in post graduation (Master and Ph.D.). The recent creation of the online
periodical philosophy@LISBON, in 2011, counts with the support of other research lines in CFUL, and targets, in
particular, the production of young national and international post-graduate researchers. In addition, in 2013 an
international symposium for young researchers in Medieval Philosophy Unum Verum Bonum was held at FLUL with the
participation of more than 50 researchers, including Alessandro Ghisalberti, Rafael Ramon Guerrero and José
Meirinhos.
The members of GHF take active part in scientific events (seminars, symposia, conferences, congresses), as speakers
or members of scientific or organization committees, in collaboration with the other research teams within CFUL, or with
other national and international research units.

9.5. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH GROUP 2015/2020
9.5.1
Structure of the Research Group
When compared to other countries in the same geographical and cultural context, studies in the History of Philosophy
in Portugal, as a whole, lag behind. The prior aim of a research unit, so as to foster such studies is thus to recover the
disadvantage and hence place Portugal at the level of the most challenging international standards in this domain. In
the present, two vectors will basically allow to fulfill the desideratum: the improvement of conditions for research in the
History of Philosophy; and the increase of critical mass on this area of study. On the other side, since it is unreasonable
to pursue all research lines simultaneously, it seems judicious to choose the ones which have a sound implementation,
due to the consistency of the work done so far; thus, such research lines will be able to compete internationally and to
rival with the best research programs in this area of science.
WORKING FRAME
MISSION AND OBJECTIVES: The History of Philosophy Group promotes research in the area via the fulfillment of
these aims: (1) creating conditions for the development of these studies; (2) increasing the number of researchers and
their respective qualification; (3) identifying and consolidating projects of excellence in this area.
STRATEGIC PRIORITIES: in order to achieve these objectives, three strategic priority tasks have been selected: (1)
constructing instruments of research in Portuguese on the History of Philosophy; (2) attracting young researchers and
investing on their qualification in the history of philosophy; (3) structuring and implementing highly competitive projects
and research programs internationally.
SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES
Line of Action 1: New Resources in Portuguese
Previous work will be carried on, in particular the translation of classic philosophers. Furthermore, taking advantage of
the number, the diversity and the multiplicity of interests and qualifications of the members of the group, covering all the
periods in the History of Philosophy, and also of their solid and acknowledged experience, the first step, scheduled for
2015-18, is to congregate the expertise to elaborate a Dictionary of the History of Philosophy where all members
should take part. And this, will thus lay the basis for the subsequent elaboration of a History of Philosophy, scheduled
to have the initial phase in 2019-20. Both these two instruments are reputed to be indispensible and decisive conditions
for the development of research that can be recognized as serious, structured and consistent.
Line of Action 2: Attracting Young Researchers
The Group will continue to offer Master and PhD programs in the history of philosophy, as it is presently carried out
together with other work such as the edition of the periodical philosophy@lisbon. In parallel, the Group will organize, in
2016, the 1st National Congress of Post-Graduations (CONPOF), inspired by the Brazilian ANCOF. Joined in one
single scientific event of great impact all the Philosophy post-graduate student interested in submitting the results of
their on-going research, first, to the blind review of the jury and, then, to their peers. Still in accordance with the ANCOF
model, this activity will take place every two years. After the first two editions, 2016 and 2018, we will invite ANCOF to
join us in the organization of a Luso-Brazilian event of Post-graduations in Philosophy, ideally, in 2020.
Line of Action 3: DEVELOPING AREAS OF EXCELLENCE
The abovementioned specialized areas are dealt in detail in the section 'Objectives'. They are the following: (1)
Aristotelian Studies; (2) Neo-Platonism in Antiquity and Western Middle Ages; (3) Kant: from the Enlightenment to
Idealism; (4) Towards the History of Contemporary Hermeneutics; and (5) Women in Philosophy- marginality and
alternativeness.
9.5.2
Objectives of the Research Group
Line of Action 1: New Resources in Portuguese
Elaboration of a Dictionary of the History of Philosophy (2015/18).
Preparation of a History of Philosophy in Portuguese (2019/20).
Line of Action 2: Attracting Young Researchers
Organization, in 2016 and 2018, of the 1st and 2nd National Congresses of Post-Graduations in Philosophy
(CONPOF).
Organization, with Brazilian ANPOF, of a larger meeting of Luso-Brazilian Post-Graduates and Post-Graduate
Programs in Philosophy (2020).
Line of Action 3: DEVELOPING AREAS OF EXCELLENCE
(1) ARISTOTELIAN STUDIES
The publication of the Complete Works of Aristotle in annotated translations with introductions started in 2004, within a
project funded by FCT. So far, it has congregated research work in this area. In 2015-16, corresponding to phase 4
(PTDC/MHC-FIL/3672/2012), the expected works to be published are: Categorias; Da Interpretação; Primeiros
Analíticos; Segundos Analíticos; Refutações Sofísticas; Física; Sobre o Céu; Meteorológicos; Parva Naturalia;
Movimento dos Animais; Progressão dos Animais; Geração dos Animais; Ética a Nicómaco; Ética a Eudemo; e
Problemas [Físicos]. In 2017-18-20, phases 5 and 6, the last translations will come out. All translations are
subsequently published in Brazil, thanks to the 2011protocol with Martins Fontes, the renowned Brazilian publishing
house. In parallel with the publications, the following scientific events will be held: an annual Seminar of Advanced
Studies in Aristotle and the Aristotelian Tradition; a bi-annual international symposium Aristotle in Translation:
International Symposium on the Translation of Aristotle's Main Texts); and also, two events international of internally
acknowledged prestige, already scheduled by the organizing committees: an international meeting (VI Encontro
Aristotélico Internacional, 2015) and an Iberian Congress (III Congresso Ibérico de Filosofia Grega, 2016).
(2) RECEPTIONS OF NEO-PLATONISM IN EUROPEAN PHILOSOPHY
There are five main activities to be carried out:
(a) The creation of regular courses of classic Greek and Latin, and of philosophical Greek and Latin, in order to
habilitate young scholars to study the sources of neo-platonic philosophy;
(b) The organization of Advanced Seminars, within the Master and Doctoral courses, on Ancient and Medieval
Neo-Platonism and its reception in Modern and Contemporary Philosophy;
(c) The organization of regular workshops to publicize specialized studies in Neo-Platonism;
(d) The elaboration of readers (with texts translated into Portuguese) of classic texts of neo-platonic philosophy or
therein inspired;
(e) The production of critical studies for publication in national and international scientific periodicals.
(3) KANT: FROM THE ENLIGHTENMENT TO IDEALISM
In these five years, 2015-20, the group will submit a project to FCT focused on the theme: Kant and the Empirical
Natural Sciences, in order to re-assess the following points: (a) the role of empirical natural sciences (Cosmology,
geography, Natural History and Biology, Physical Anthropology, Medicine, Chemistry) in the formation of Kant's
thought; (b) Kant's contribution to the evolution of empirical natural sciences in his day. Other activities of the project
will include 3 international conferences on the topic (2015-18-20), the launching of a permanent seminar and regular
lectures by guest specialists, as well as the translation of a number of writings by Kant.
(4) TOWARDS THE HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY HERMENEUTICS
There will be 3 main lines of research and production: (a) Interpretation of texts: Schleiermacher, Ricoeur; (b)
Interpretation of the self: Ricoeur, Foucault; (c) Interpretation of the work of art: Gadamer, Jauss.
Within the aims to be achieved, the following volumes will be published: (i) A collection of texts in one volume will
re-unite the main contributions of these philosophers for the history of contemporary (2015); (ii) A second volume will
re-unite critical essays of researchers of the group

9.3. RESEARCH GROUP DESCRIPTION AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOR 2008/2012
9.3.1
Description of the Research Group
The mission of the LanCog Research Group is twofold:
(a) Firstly, to carry out and foster high-quality research, individual or collaborative, on a set of fundamental issues
concerning the nature and structure of language, mind and cognition. These issues belong in three core areas of
present-day analytical philosophy: (i) Metaphysics and Value Theory (including Ontology, Meta-ethics, Aesthetics
and the Philosophy of Gender); (ii) Philosophy of Cognition (including Epistemology and the Foundations of Cognitive
Science); and the Philosophies of Language and Logic (including Philosophical Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics).
These are the areas of analytic philosophy with respect to which there already is a good record of excellence in
research by LanCog members, where we clearly have the capacity to make high-quality and original contributions
at the international level, and which no other research group in the region or country is apt (to the best of our
knowledge) to develop with an equivalent degree of internationalization and scientific expertise. Here are a few
examples of the envisaged kind of topics: logical paradoxes; the epistemology of logic; the meaning of logical
constants; quantification and generality; propositions; vagueness; semantics and pragmatics; contextualism and
relativism; the reference of singular and general terms; rigidity and semantic content; indexicality of language and
thought; the semantics of tense; speech acts; the analysis of knowledge; the nature of epistemic justification; the
analytic and the a priori; the skeptical challenges; perception and concepts; the nature of mental representation; the
mind-body problem; rationality and rational explanation; truth; realism vs. anti-realism; existence and being;
presentism vs. eternalism; personal identity; the nature of metaphysical necessity; fictional objects; the nature of
social kinds and social constructionism about gender and race; relativism; response-dependent properties;
dispositional theories of value; the metaphysics, epistemology, logic and semantics of normative discourses such as
the moral, the aesthetic, the legal, and the rational.
(b) Secondly, to provide an appropriate environment for training early career researchers, especially postgraduate
(Master and PhD) students and postdoctoral junior researchers, in the above mentioned core areas of analytic
philosophy. The two permanent seminars run by the LanCog Group on a weekly basis (the Seminar Series
in Analytic Philosophy and the LanCog Seminar, where early career researchers are able to present their work),
together with the international workshops regularly organized by the LanCog Group, are crucial elements in that
environment and an important part of the training programme. Also, early career researchers regularly attend
postgraduate mini-courses and courses given by senior LanCog researchers in the areas of Logic and Language,
Mind and Cognition, and Metaphysics.
9.3.2
Main achievements
1. Articles
The most important achievement of the LanCog Group, one which distinguishes the group from all other research
groups in the country and puts it on a par with the best European research groups in the area, consists in the
fact that several LanCog members have published articles in top international peer-reviewed journals, viz. INT1
journals according to the EHRI ranking. Here is a sample of such articles.
• Andreas Stokke. 2012. Insinserity, Noûs. DOI: 10.1111/nous.12001
• Manuel García-Carpintero. 2012. Minimalism on Quotation? Philosophical Studies, 161, 207-225.

• Philosophical Linguistics, 1-23
2. Journals
The LanCog Group publishes Disputatio, International Journal of Philosophy ( www.disputatio.com). Disputatio
aims at publishing first-rate articles and discussion notes on all aspects of analytical philosophy, but
especially those dealing with current issues in the philosophies of language, logic, and mind, and also in
epistemology and metaphysics. Submitted papers are doubly blind refereed by a pool of international experts.
In 2011 Disputatio was classified in sub-category INT2 of the
ERIH ranking of the European Science Foundation. It is presently the only Portuguese philosophy journal
included in the INT category.
3. Main ongoing Research projects
• Project Online Companion to Problems of Analytic Philosophy. 2012-2015. FCT PTDC/FIL-FIL/121209/2010. The
aim is to produce a volume written in Portuguese and made available for free on the internet. The volume
consists of state of the art, specialized essays on problems in core areas of present Analytic Philosophy. It will
revolve around three broad domains: Mind and Cognition (Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive
Science, etc); Logic and Language (Philosophy of Language, Philosophical Logic, Philosophy of Mathematics,
etc); and Metaphysics (Ontology, Philosophy of Science, etc). http://www.compendioemlinha.com/
• Project Contextualism, Relativism and Practical Conflicts and Disagreement. 2011-2014. LanCog hosts this project,
which is part of the collaborative research project
"Communication in Context: Shared Understanding in a Complex World", CCCOM, Eurocores Scheme,
Eurounderstanding, of the European Science Foundation. http://www.lancog.com/projects.html
4. Renowned International Conferences
The LanCog Group organizes, on a regular basis, several international meetings that gather the leading world
experts on issues about the nature of language, mind and cognition. We single out the following ones:
• The Petrus Hispanus Lectures. Delivered every other academic year at the University of Lisbon by a leading
figure in current research about the nature of mind, cognition and language. Previous Petrus Hispanus Lecturers:
Hilary Putnam, Daniel Dennett, Richard Jeffrey, Ned Block, David Kaplan, Tyler Burge, Timothy Williamson.
Forthcoming Petrus Hispanus Lecturers: Susan Carey (2014), Saul Kripke (2016), Robert Stalnaker (2018)
• LanCog International Workshops
• LanCog Workshop on the Epistemology of Modality (with David Chalmers and Bob Hale)
29-31 August 2013, Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon, http://epistemologyofmodality.weebly.com/
• LanCog Workshop on Fiction and Imagination (with Gregory Currie and Benjamin Schnieder)

2. Permanent Seminars
The scientific activity of the LanCog Group is organized around two permanent seminars. Seminar sessions occur on a
weekly basis and are attended by all members of the Group in residence.
o Seminar Series in Analytic Philosophy. Talks, given by renowned philosophers from all over Europe and the world,
whose aim is to present results of the best work done in the analytic tradition in any area of Philosophy.
http://www.lancog.com/seminar-series-in-analytic-philosophy.html
o LanCog Seminar. A forum where senior and junior members of the Group are able to present and discuss in public
their research. We also discuss recent essays by leading philosophers. http://www.lancog.com/lancog-seminar.html
3. Research sub-domains
In terms of their research activity, LanCog researchers group themselves naturally into the following three broad fields
of Philosophy (note that several researchers work on issues that cut across these three areas): Metaphysics and Value
Theory, including portions of Aesthetics and Meta-Ethics; Philosophy of Cognition, including Epistemology and the
Philosophy of Cognitive Science; and Philosophy of Logic and Language, including Philosophical and Lingustic
Semantics, Philosophy of Mathematics and Philosophical Logic.
4. General Meetings
With a view to discussing the general strategy of the group for the following academic year, as well as planning the
scientific activity (seminars, projects, etc.) ahead and monitoring the ongoing research activity, the LanCog Group
meets (as a whole) twice every academic year, typically at the beginning of each semester.
9.5.2
Objectives of the Research Group
Our research in 2015-20 will focus on core areas of analytical philosophy. Two main aims are to be pursued. First, to
carry out high-quality research in three central fields: Metaphysics and Value Theory; Mind and Cognition; Logic and
Language. There already is a record of excellence in research in these areas by LanCog members and we clearly have
the capacity to make original contributions. Second, to provide an appropriate environment for training early career
researchers, especially postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students. We expect to reach the following goals.
1. Publications
The priority will be placed on articles in peer-reviewed international journals. We aim at journals in the category
International (INT1 or INT2) of the EHRI ranking of the ESF. Our goal is to have 60 articles published in peer-reviewed
international journals (an average of three papers by each senior researcher). We also aim at 8 books published on
topics in Philosophy of Language, Philosophical Logic and Metaphysics, among which the Online Companion to
Problems of Analytical Philosophy and three thematic issues of Disputatio
2. Edition of Journals
Disputatio (www.disputatio.com), aims at publishing first-rate articles on all aspects of analytical philosophy, but
especially those dealing with current issues in the philosophies of language, logic, and mind, and also in epistemology
and metaphysics. Disputatio is in sub-category INT2 of the ERIH ranking of the European Science Foundation (it is the
only Portuguese philosophy journal in the INT category). We want to increase the overall quality of the published
material in 2015-20.
3. Research Projects
Project Companion II. This will be the sequel to the FCT 3-year project Compêndio em Linha de Problemas de Filosofia
Analítica (2012-2014). The original project will result in a volume containing opinionated articles in Portuguese stating
the state of the art relative to core topics in the areas of Mind and Cognition, Metaphysics, and Logic and Language.
The sequel project will consist in: (a) publishing the online volume in 2015; (b) updating the estimated 60 articles
therein; (c) enlarging the base-set of articles with circa 40 new articles written by either LanCog members or external
contributors. http://www.compendioemlinha.com/
Project Collective Attitudes and Normative Disagreement. This project concerns the perspectival nature of legal
statements and legal disputes. Its main aim is to increase our understanding of legal and normative statements and
disputes in light of contemporary accounts of the semantics and pragmatics of deontic modals, and of collective
intentionality. The project will apply state-of-the-art theories and arguments of contextualist semantics about deontic
modals and value predicates to the case of statements of law (i.e. statements of what, according to law, one ought to
do).
Project Summulae Logicales. The aim is twofold: (a) to translate into Portuguese the treatise Summulae Logicales,
authored by the great medieval logician Peter of Spain; (b) to critically assess the present-day value and significance of
the views presented therein on issues ranging from the semantics of general terms (the theory of suppositio) to the
nature of intentional objects.
PROJECT A NON-CONTRACTIVE THEORY OF TRUTH.
4. Scientific Events
Seminar Series in Analytic Philosophy. 8-10 invited talks per academic year.
LanCog Seminar. 14-16 sessions per academic year.
Petrus Hispanus Lectures 2016 and 2018: Saul Kripke and Robert Stalnaker
3 LanCog International Workshops: The metaphysics of modality; The foundations of semantics; Concepts
5. Advanced Training
Theses: 10 PhD theses completed (supervised by LanCog senior members); 15 MA theses completed
Research Grants: 2 two-year long research grants: 1 BI (Mestre) and 1 BI (Licenciatura).
BD and BPD Researchers: 6 researchers holding BD FCT grants and 4 researchers holding BPD FCT grants.

12. STRATEGIC PROGRAMME AND BUDGET RATIONALE 2015/2020
12.1
Overall budget rationale
Consultants
Taking into account the activities of each group, as well as what is outlined as principles in the Strategic Project, we
estimate to invite experts of acknowledged merit to potentiate the achievement of the outlined aims, namely scientific
events.
Estimate: 1000€ x 4 x 12= 24.000,00€/year
An average of 4 experts a year/per group, distributed unevenly along 2015-20, since in years of major events, more
consultants are expected to be invited. Other consultants include the yearly visit of the External Scientific Advisory
Board involving 4 Professors. Expenses will include travel, accommodation and local transportation.
Acquisition of Goods and Services
1 - Maintenance of the multifunction copier (digitalizer and printer) used for secretarial tasks and research of all groups:
4200€/year
2 - Costs for two pen drives for internet access, to be used by researchers when abroad in locations where there is no
access to wifi internet or to common internet connection: 1200€/year
3 - Stationery and similar expenses: 1800€/year
4 - Translation costs (for articles submitted to international periodicals) - 6000€/year
5 - Costs concerning formatting and editing of texts for publication - 2400€/year
6 - Costs concerning web designing, updating of web pages of the Unit, the projects, the groups and the periodicals:
1800€/year
7 - Costs with graphic houses, like editions or events (book covers, posters, rollups, leaflets, other material used in
exhibits: 3000€/year
8 - Costs with technical support for events inserted in the outlined aims of the strategic program: 3000€/year
9 - Costs with advertising and publicizing in the media of courses, calls and results and products of research:
2000€/year
10 -Costs with the adequate required bibliography for research by investigators and for the unit library available to
public consultation: 6000€/year
11 - Costs with publishing products of research conducted within CFUL and in partnership with peer institutions:
24000€/year.
12 - Copyright costs in the case of translations carried out within the aims of the strategic program: 6000€/year.
13 - National and international postal services: 2400€/year
Total: 63.800,00/year
12.2
Human Resources rationale
In order to achieve the designed aims in the strategic plan for the different research areas, and in order to serve the
needs of the various research groups and areas, CFUL estimates that the following grants should be in permanent
execution during 2015-20:
1 BGCT (13 360€/year for 6 years): To support management, and especially the requirements demanded by Horizon
2020, which will require special attention and adaptation in terms of administrative work;
1 BI (10 540€/year, for 6 years): Since one of the guiding lines of CFUL is to support young researchers and also to
suppress the current lack of research jobs for young postgraduates we also want to open a call for BI so that we can
have permanently a BI in the six years 2015-2020. The recipients, since the jobs will be annual or to the maximum
biannual positions, are expected to assist the research groups in different functions, for example, in domains that
require considerable amount of field work;
3 BPD (each 19 600€/year): the transfer of knowledge/skills/practices/methodologies from senior members to young
researchers lies in the core of the creation of these grants. Due to the paramount quality of research this is the
minimum that we may count on to achieve our aims of national and international scope. One for each area.
1 BCC (29 200€ for a period of 60 months to be divided; contracts may be betw. 3 months and 3 years): Guest
scholars may serve as consultants, lecturers, co-advisors, take part in active research and in general play the role of
former international members. The duration of stay will be announced in individual calls opened to adequate the needs
required for the achievement of the goals of the work/research in process for each of the areas to be contemplated.
The calculus is based on an average of 2300€/month plus voluntary social security contribution and compulsory
personal assurance.
The demand for these grants takes into consideration the fact that the number of BPD grants and BD grants, directly
applied in answer to FCT calls, cannot be foreseen since they obviously depend on individual decisions and on the
quality of projects as evaluated by FCT panels. Thus, since now Units are invested with the possibility of opening calls,
CFUL is willing to assume the opening of calls as part of its strategic plans.
12.3
Equipment rationale
Estimated acquisitions in electronics, hardware, software and other equipment:
5 laptops, one for each group/subgroup;
5 desk PCs for administrative tasks
3 desk PCs for researchers in advanced formation
2 printers to equip the room for postgraduate researchers
2 external drives for data backup
1 digital camera (registration of events and archives)
1 film camera (registration of events)
