In this paper we consider the adjustment of g nonlinear regression models. We present a
framework for testing the following null hypothesis: (a) H0 : the g nonlinear models are all
identical, i.e., one single model can be adjusted; and (b) H0 : a subset of the parameters from the
g models are equal. We illustrate our proposed framework with the logistic growth model. The
likelihood ratio test is used and the methodology is very general in the sense that it can be
applied to any nonlinear regression model.
Key words: likelihood ratio test, nonlinear regression, hypothesis test.

Three models were applied to datasets, obtained from biological control essays. The standard
analysis can be questionable using binomial model, because of zeros excess. In this case, the
zero inflated binomial model is used. If interest is only in the positive proportion data, a
truncated binomial model can be fitted.

The strategy of settling down a group of experiments, with common treatments, and to consider
the combined analysis of those experiments, as an alternative to the square lattice design, was
evaluated. The results showed that the use of the groups of experiments implicates in the loss of
precision of the comparisons among means of treatments that don't belong to a same
experiment, and that the relative disadvantage of that procedure grows with the increases the
number of used experiments.

The partial circulant diallel cross mating scheme of Kempthorne and Curnow (1961) was
adapted for the evaluation of genotypes in crosses at the interpopulation level. Considering a
random sample of n lines from base population UFV-F, and that each line is crossed with s lines
from opposite population UFV-D, there will be ns sampled crosses that are evaluated
experimentally.
The means of the ns sampled crosses and the remaining n(n - s) crosses can be predicted by the
reduced model Yˆij = m
ˆ + gi + g j . The analysis of variance is performed with the complete model
Yij = µ + gi + gj + sij + e ij, and the sum of squares due to general combining ability were
considered for each population separately. Results indicated that the proposed procedure may
furnish reliable estimates of means of hybrids not available in the partial diallel.

A SIMULATION STUDY FOR MODEL UNCERTAINTY IN POISSON REGRESSION
Cecilia Candolo, DEs-UFSCar [email protected]
In statistical data analysis the inference is carried on without any account to model uncertainty.
This work consider the approach of Candolo (2001) who explored the weighted estimator
proposed by Buckland et al. (1997) with application to linear regression. Here, we use
simulation to study the behaviour of this estimator for Poisson regression with one and two
covariates, considering a range of sample sizes and regression parameters. We get similar
results for the approachs of Buckland et al. (1997) and Candolo (2001) and in the bootstrap
cases the study is not yet conclusive.

Ranked set sampling is adequate when the variable of interesting is expensive to
measure, but it is possible to the order of possible outcomes. This paper presents a simulation
study of the asymptotic properties of the ranked set sample mean estimator and the performance
of usual confidence intervals when ranked errors are present for normal and exponential
distribution.

The present work had as objective to illustrate the application of the Multivariate Growth Curve
Model, considered for Potthoff & Roy (1964), to a data set with repeated measures of weights of
broilers, that exhibit a great heterocedasticy of variances over time. The behavior of the average
profiles of weight of the broilers (male and female) well was explained by polynomials of
second degree and the best adjustment included, as covariates, the referring columns to the
polynomials of degrees 3 and 4. The analyses had been carried through using procedures GLM
and IML of the SAS (1990).

This study aimed at applying model identity tests that portray the relationship between the
average height of dominant trees and diameter at breast height (DBH) in relation to time as well
as building site index curves for groups of Eucalyptus clones using the “algebric difference
method”. It was concluded that the identity of the models was sensitive enough to detect
similarities and differences among clones in different management regimes or among clones
subject to the same management regime. The Bailey and Clutter polymorphic model showed a
better adjustment to the data base used.

AN ASYMPTOTIC NORMAL APPROACH FOR THE VARIANCE EXACT
CONFIDENCE INTERVAL OF A NORMAL POPULATION
Daniel Furtado FERREIRA Universidade Federal de Lavras – Departamento de Ciências
Exatas; [email protected]; Denismar Alves NOGUEIRA Universidade Federal de Lavras –
Departamento de Ciências Exatas; [email protected]
The variance of a population is an important parameter to be estimate. There are many
areas that request precise estimates of the variance. The interval estimate has for purpose to
express the precision of estimates of that parameter. This work aimed to present two confidence
interval for the normal variance that result from the transformation of Wilson and Hilferty
(1931) and from the asymptotic chi-square approach of Bishop, Fienberg and Holland (1975)
and to evaluate its performances by means of Monte Carlo simulation using 2000 iterations. The
confidence interval based on Wilson and Hilferty (1931) approach showed basically the same
accuracy to the exact confidence interval to confidence coefficient varying from 10% to 99.99%
and should be recommended for ν > 4; The interval based on the approach of Bishop, Fienberg
and Holland (1975) can only be recommended for ν > 30, however the previous interval is
considered better; The normal asymptotic interval presented robustness for non normal
populations and it can be recommended to estimate variances of those populations in the
absence of an exact or more efficient method for the situation in subject; The proposed
confidence intervals do not need the estimate of chi-square quantis and present results similar to
the exact interval. For great values of ν these methods possess larger accuracy, although in this
situation the numerical methods are unstable for obtaining chi-square quantis; the educational
value of those approaches should be considered for its uses and recommendations.
KEYWORDS: asymptotic approach, chi -square, Monte Carlo, simulation.

The convergence diagnostics are tests that verify if the stochastic process has stabilized
and than if it is possible to accomplish the sampling. In this work the behavior of four tests was

Models related with precipitations generation have extremely importance nowadays
because with the standard knowledge about an specific area, we can plan projects to minimize
the effects caused by high intensity precipitations. At the present work, we applies NeymanScott’s model and particularly the one from Poisson, in the precipitations generations with high
intensity in the Superior Tietê Bays’ region, São Paulo state, Brazil. This region suffer annually
with the floods due to the strong precipitations and the high human density. To use the NeymanScott and Poisson models related to spatial precipitations distribution, we have considered data
collected during 1980 to 1997 from a pluviometric network consisted by thirteen rain gauges.

A very used model in a survival analysis is the proportional hazard model, also known as the
Cox Model. Many books and articles have demonstrated the importance of verifying the
proportional hazard assumption. However there isn’t a broad knowledge of the way to
accomplish this task. On this job, some of the techniques presented for verifying the
proportional hazard assumption are compared and evaluated.

Three forms of spatial analysis were compared to the GMN model in genetical experiments
taking progeny effects as random. The local control was initially ignored to test the
effectiveness of recovering spatial information. Then the spatial analysis was applied to the
complete model. In some cases Papadakis and moving average models were the more effective.
However, in most of the situations, GMN was the more parcimonious.

This paper evaluates the performance of statistical techniques for selecting geostatistical
models.
The data set used was composed by 134 sampling plots of a Eucalyptus grandis
plantation forest, where timber volume (m3/ha) was measured. Cross-validation and predictive
validation are essential for appropriate model selection and both techniques resulted in same
selected model. However, cross-valiation over-estimated the krigging precision of all tested
models.

Individual genetic models are powerful tools for plant and animal breeders. Animal breeders
usually analyse genetic values based on animal models as presented by Henderson (1984).
Bayesian analysis of these models, usually use Gibbs Sampling (GS) via Markov Chain Monte
Carlo (MCMC) simulation, that has some known disadvantages. We show how to use
Sampling-Importance-Resampling (SIR) to make a discrete aproximation of the true posterior
posterior, and illustrate this with a numerical example.

The selection process is one of the stages most difficult of plant breeding program, mainly when
the selection is in several characters simultaneously. The objective of this research was to apply
the index Mulamba and Mock associated to the test of Scott-Knott in the simultaneous selection
for high yielding potato genotypes, with high percentage of large tubers and superior specific
gravity. The application of the index Mulamba and Mock is a method very important in the
simultaneous selection for these three characters
NON-LINEAR AND NON-PARAMETRIC REGRESSION USING WAVELET
TRANSFORMS TO MODEL REMOTELY SENSED TIME SERIES
LUIS MARCELO TAVARES DE CARVALHO Departamento de Ciências Florestais,
Universidade Federal de Lavras
The robust smoother-cleaner wavelets were used to remove cloud contamination in a time series
of Landsat data and the wavelet shrinkage to estimate new values. Various methods were
compared. Wavelet regression was more accurate in clouded areas, whereas linear regression in
shadowed areas. Wavelet regression holds promise for effective time series analysis and has the
potential to produce cloud-free images at any point in the time series.

Interim analyses are utilized in many clinical trials that take a long time to be completed.
Appropriate bounds for univariate tests to be done in each one of those interim analysis in order
to achieve a desired global size and power have been established by many authors for
asymptotically joint normal distributed statistics. The objective of the present paper is to study
the relative performance of tests defined by non parametric statistics log-rank, weighted Kaplan

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of two stocking densities and two litter
types on the broiler performance. Four hundred and fifty birds were used in an entirely
randomized design and factorial arrangement 2 x 2 (two stocking densities – 10 and 14 birds/m2
and two litter types – wood shavings and sawdust) with five replications. Birds and rations were
weighed in order to obtain the body weight, daily weight gain, daily ration consumption, feed:
gain ratio and total meat production. There was effect (P<0.01) only of the stocking density on
the daily ration consumption and on the total meat production. There was a 33.28% incresead in
the total meat production in the higher stocking density. It wasconcluded that the higher
stocking density was the most economic and that there was not influence due the litter type on
the studied variables.

Sorgo is a more resistant culture to the drought than the corn and it is a food that owns
similar nutritious characteristics to the corn and could be used as energy source replacing the
corn since corn is the energetic food used most in the animals rations. The goal of this work was
to evaluate the effect of the partial and total substitution of the corn in the rabbits ration in
growth on the performance of the animals. 160 rabbits of New Zealand race were used in a
blocks delineation at random with five treatments (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of substitution of the
corn of the ration by sorgo), four repetitions and eight animals in each cage. The rations were
isoproteanous and isonergetics. The experimental rations were supplied at ease and, together
with the animals were weighed for determination of the final weight, of the gain of diary weigh,
of the ration consumption and of the conversion feed. There was not statistical difference (P >
0.05) for none of the evaluated parameters, showing that, sorgo can replace the corn totally in
rations for rabbits since the protein and energy levels be corrected.

In statistical data analysis the inference is carried on without any account to model uncertainty.
This work consider the approach of Candolo (2001) who explored the weighted estimator
proposed by Buckland et al. (1997) with application to linear regression. Here, we use two
examples and a small simulation to study the behaviour of this estimator for logistic regression
with one and two covariates. We get similar results for the approachs of Buckland et al. (1997)
and Candolo (2001).

This study had the objective to evaluate the estimation exactness of diameter along the shaft in
Eucalyptus cloeziana trees, using models based on reasons between volume, polynomial models
not segmented and segmented models. The following statisticians were used to evaluate the
exactness: diameter deviation in each i-esima position in the shaft; standard deviation of
diameter differences; quadratic sum of relative residue; percentage of diameter residues. Thus, it
can be concluded that the segmented models of Clark, Souter and Schlaegal were more accurate
amongst the models studied.

Several empirical studies show evidences of non-linear dependences in financial series, such
non-linearities can have nature stochastic or deterministic. Chaotic processes correspond to the
first type and GARCH processes are an example of the last. In this study, the BDS test is applied
to a series of returns of the Ibovespa index to capture great deviations of the hypothesis of an
independent and identically distributed process in time. Such hypothesis is rejected and weak
evidence of deterministic behavior exists. A GARCH model captures great part of the
dependences evidenced by the BDS test.

In a previous, we derived the analytical expressions for the coefficients in the high temperature
expansion of the Helmholtz free energy of periodic one-dimensional chains in the cumulant
method, for arbitrary order in β. In order to do so, na auxiliary function was defined. The
purpose of the present comment is that of showing that the existence of singularities ion this
auxiliary function at finite values of β is associated to a poorer convergence of the β-expansion
of thermodynamic quantities. Our discussion is based on the exactly solvable spin-1 and spin-½
Ising models, whose respective auxiliary functions have algebraic expressions valid for β ∈
