Prayer for Peace in Iraq
(by His Beatitude Louis Rafael Sako,
Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Iraq)
Lord, the plight of our country is deep and the suffering
of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we
ask you, Lord, to spare our lives, and to grant us patience, and courage to continue our witness of Christian
values with trust and hope.
Lord, peace is the foundation of life; grant us the peace
and stability that will enable us to live with each other
without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy.
Glory be to you forever. Amen.

Pastor’s Note
(Reprinted from a letter from Msgr. Francis Cilia)
I realize that people have been bombarded with one
appeal after the other in recent months. However, as the
situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate,
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, President of the USCCB, has
just written to the bishops of the country to ask for a collection on behalf of the Christians and Churches in that
region of the world.
From Archbishop Kurtz’ letter:
“It is with great concern for the ongoing crisis in the
Middle East, the cradle of Christianity, that I write to you
today. Our Church mourns the terrible suffering of Christians and other innocent victims of violence in Iraq, Syria
and Gaza who are struggling to survive, protect their
children and live with dignity in dire conditions.”
Given the extraordinary nature of this crisis, I am asking
you to consider taking up a special collection to provide
humanitarian relief and pastoral support for our affected
brothers and sisters in the Middle East.
These funds will be used by Catholic Relief Services and
other Catholic agencies working in partnership with the
local Church to meet the most urgent humanitarian needs
facing the people in Iraq, Gaza, Syria and surrounding
countries where refugees have fled. These organizations
have well-established partnerships with the Catholic
Church in the region which allow them to respond quickly
and efficiently to victims in some of the hardest to reach
areas. Collection funds will also be used to support
Church programs to aid persecuted Christians and to
respond to rebuilding needs of Catholic dioceses in the
impacted areas.
Our Christian brothers and sisters and other innocent
victims of the violence in the Middle East urgently need
the assistance of the Catholic community of the United
States.
Thank you!
Msgr. Cilia
The “Middle East Appeal” collection will be taken up
September 6/7.

news of Jesus Christ. Catechesis—teaching the faith—
is an essential work of the Church, beginning in the
home and permeating parish life.
St. Clare Parish faith formation program
for children presents opportunities for families to grow closer to God and to deepen
their spiritual lives, both on an individual
basis as a community of faith.

New Wednesday School Schedule
All Wednesdays will be 12:30 days.
Our teachers’ Blended Learning skills will
continue to be developed in the coming
years. This year, all Drexel teachers will be
collaborating at different school sites with
their peers at grade levels. This commitment to collaboration is vital to maintain
the growth of our new educational model.
To support this collaboration, Drexel schools will implement a new 12:30pm early dismissal every Wednesday
starting this school year.
These Wednesday minimum days will allow us to collaborate on our student assessment tools to personalize
student learning, meet with other Drexel teachers at
grade levels to share successes and teaching techniques and plan for the coming WCEA/WASC Accreditation effort. Supporting best teaching practices is a cornerstone of the Drexel Initiative and we are committed to
enable teacher growth over the long term.
Traits of a Teacher
All who undertake to teach must be endowed with
deep love, the greatest patience, and, most of all,
profound humility. The Lord will find them worthy to
become fellow workers with him in the cause of
truth.
~St. Joseph Calasanz
The first Mass for the school children takes place this
coming Friday, September 05, at 9:00 am in the Church.
We are hoping that weekly Mass will become a tradition
beginning this year. Parents are welcome to come and
celebrate the Eucharist with their children.
The Jogathon fundraiser is scheduled for October 8th.
Bible Study Coming In the Fall
The Great Adventure is a fascinating 24-part Bible study
course that will take you on a journey through the entire
Bible. The course begins September 12th and continues
every Friday, 7 to 9 pm, until March. Meetings will be in
the Rectory Conference Room.
There will be a $39 donation for study materials (if you
have the means).

Scripture Readings
for THIS Sunday
First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9
Psalm: 63
Second Reading: Romans 11:1-2
Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:21-27
The language of Jeremiah as he addresses his yearnings
o God—he says, “You duped, O Lord, and I let myself be
duped” (Jeremiah 20:7) - indicates a close and personal
relationship with God. It is one the prophet obviously
cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him.
In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his
Father. In spite of the difficult challenges presented by
following God’s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giving up our
own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain
and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the
will of God.
The only way to do God’s will is offer our whole selves to
God. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: “Do
not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by
the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

supplying material items for the mothers and their unborn
babies, being a friend to talk to about their pregnancy,
surrounding them with prayer, and more. If you know a

Reflexão por: João Pereira Arruda
As leituras deste Domingo levam-nos a avaliar a nossa
adesão a Cristo.
O ser-mos
e siga-Me.
levam a Deus.
OBRIGADO!
piquenique comunitário do último Domingo. Ainda não é
conhecido o resultado financeiro deste evento mas é

diciéndole: “Me has seducido, Señor, y me dejé seducir
- Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
