ACCEPTED PRACTICES
A+/CBI COURSES
(Alternative Programs)
This Accepted Practices document addresses the high school use of
A+ as an online computer based instruction program for students. The
goal of this program is to increase graduation rates by ensuring that
students have alternative opportunities to earn credits necessary for high
school graduation.
This document does not refer to PLATO/CBI, individual CBI modules
incorporated into regular instruction, WCSD online programs, or other
options offered through Supplemental Credit. This document does provide
guidelines for the use of A+ as an online credit option (either on campus or
off campus) for high school students district-wide.
Eligibility:
1. Seniors and juniors who are credit deficient must have the first
opportunity to utilize the A+ program.
2. Credit deficient sophomores and freshman may have access to the
program, if there is space available.
3. Students entering after the “last date to earn credit” during any
semester.
4. Students with principal and parent/guardian approval to take a
distance education credit accrual course through A+.
Enrollment:
1. To be eligible for credit recovery:
 the student may have completed the entire 18-week semester in
the regular classroom course/program and received an “F”
 or may have earned an “F” through failure to meet the 90%
attendance requirement
2. Students and parents must be notified by a school administrator
and/or school counselor that the type of credit issued will bear the
“CBI – Computer Based Instruction” designation and will have special
implications: A+ CBI courses are not approved by the NCAA
Clearinghouse and some universities may not accept A+ CBI
courses.
3. Credit accrual utilizing A+ will be approved by the school principal on
a case-by-case, consistent basis and with approval of the student’s
parent/guardian.
Carryover of Student Work in A+:
1. Provided a student is making adequate progress, he/she will be
allowed to carryover coursework-in-process fall-to-spring and springto-fall. On an annual basis, it will be determined whether A+ is
available for summer school. If A+ is available in summer school,
students making adequate progress will be allowed to carryover
coursework-in-process spring-to-summer, or summer-to-fall. Note:
There may be a cost involved in summer school courses.
2. If a student is allowed to continue coursework-in-process, but has not
completed the coursework by the end of a second semester, he/she
may be given an appropriate elective credit or an “F”.
Student Transfers:
1. If a student transfers to another WCSD school while working on an
A+ course, the exiting school will work with the receiving school to
ensure that the student’s work/progress in A+ is transferred.
2. If a student transfers outside of WCSD, he/she may request a
progress report from the A+ teacher to take to the new school. There
is no guarantee that the receiving school will accept this information.
Grading Policies:
1. Students who take courses in A+ will be issued a grade of A, B, C, D,
F, or NM. The HQ teacher of record for the course will issue the
grade based on student performance in the A+ program.
2. A+ courses are mastery-based. Students will take a Pre-Assessment
(available in core courses), which will determine standards that still
must be mastered in order to complete and pass the course. The
Pre-Assessment must be administered in person and monitored at
the school/reengagement site.
3. A+ courses are semester (.5) courses. No partial semester credit will
be issued for courses not completed.
4. The student must earn a 70% or higher on the final exam. If a student
does not pass the final exam with a 70% or higher, he/she can have
up to two additional attempts to pass the test with a 70% or higher. If
the student does not pass the test with a 70% or higher after three
attempts, he/she will receive an “F” for the course. The final exam
must be administered in person and monitored at the
school/reengagement site.
5. Although minimum seat time is not required for mastery learning, if
the A+ course is part of the student’s minimum school load,
attendance must meet the district’s 90% requirement. A student who
fails to meet the attendance requirement will receive an “F” in the
course. As stated in the Student Attendance Procedures Manual,
attendance is based on 90% of the “opportunities to attend” and
will be calculated from the date of enrollment in the program.
Start time for attendance in an A+ course begins when the student
enters the A+ course.
6. If the A+ course is not part of the student’s minimum academic load,
the 90% attendance requirement will not pertain. In these cases,
there will be an expectation of two way communication at a minimum
of once a week between the student and the teacher. This can be in
the form of emails, telephone conversations, or face-to-face
meetings. The teacher will maintain records of two way
communication with the student and records showing progress in the
course.
7. If a student is taking an A+ course, which is not part of his/her
minimum academic load, and if he/she has not passed/completed the
coursework by the end of the semester, the student will be issued a
“NM – No Mark” with the option of transferring the coursework to the
following semester.
8. If a student withdraws from an A+ course by the eleventh week of the
semester because he/she will earn an “F” due to failure to meet the
attendance requirements, he/she will be dropped from the class
without penalty, provided that he/she continues to be enrolled in the
minimum number of classes. The student will earn an “F” if he/she
withdraws after the 11th week, regardless of what the actual grade
was at the time of withdrawal.
9. The grade a student earns in an A+ course may be used to replace
an “F” in the same course. Students may not use an A+ course to
raise a grade other than an “F”.
10. Grades will be posted when students complete the course.
11. The teacher awarding the credit and grade for A+ must have HQ
status in the subject area of the credit issued.
Scheduling Options for A+:
1. High Schools may schedule students into credit recovery labs during
the instructional day for A+. Note: If the A+ course is part of the
minimum academic load for the student, the 90% attendance
requirement would pertain. With this scheduling option, students
would have the option of working online off-campus in addition to
working in the lab on a course. Note: Pre-Assessments and Final
Exams must be taken in person.
2. High Schools may schedule students into A+ during after
school/before school/Intervention block programs. Note: If the A+
course is not part of the minimum academic load for the student, the
90% attendance requirement would not pertain. With this scheduling
option, students would have the option of working online off-campus
in addition to working in the lab on a course. Note: The teacher
would be required to maintain records of weekly two-way
communication with the student and records of progress. Note: PreAssessments and Final Exams must be taken in person.
