Porto Alegre
The capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, was
founded in 1742 by immigrants from the Azores. Since the
19th century the city has received numerous German and
Italian Scot settlers.
Porto Alegre lies on the eastern bank of the Rio Guaiba,
at the point where five rivers converge to form the Lagoa
dos Patos, a giant freshwater lagoon navigable by even the
largest of ships.

One of the city’s main tourist-cultural attractions is the
Mário Quintana Cultural Centre based in the former Hotel
Majestic where the poet, whose name the Centre bears,
lived until 1980, before his death in 1994. The Cultural
Centre comprises auditoria for theatre and cinema, libraries
and an art gallery as well as housing a vast collection of
material relating to Mário Quintana.
The city has become an important port as well as one
of the chief industrial and commercial centers in Brazil.
The Gaucho capital has a broad-based economy that
lays particular emphasis on agriculture and industry.
Agricultural production includes produce such as plums,
peaches, rice and cassava grown on rural smallholdings.
The shoe and leather industries are also important,
especially in Novo Hamburgo in the metropolitan area of
Porto Alegre.
In the Matriz Square in Porto Alegre is an architectural
complex in the Portuguese baroque style, a legacy of
its founders. The most important buildings are the São
Pedro Theatre, which is more than one hundred and thirty
years old, the Metropolitan Cathedral built in 1929 in the
renaissance style, the Public Library, the Town Hall and
Riachuelo Street where the city’s bookshops, both new
and second hand, are situated.
The capital has great benefit from its geographical
position. With the creation of Mercosul comprising four
countries of which two (Argentina and Uruguay), border
Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre has almost taken on the

and government buildings. It has also preserved many old,
narrow streets and colonial buildings. It is the seat of two
large universities and is an important cultural and literary
center.

The city has considerable life and you’ll find many ways to
occupy yourself, particularly if your visit coincides with one
of the main festivals: “Semana Farroupilha” (Sept 13–20)
features traditional local folk dancing and singing, while
the highlight of “Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes”
(Feb 2) is a procession of fishing boats.
The city also is a center for “gaúcho” (the popular name
for natives of the State) history and culture, famous for its
barbecue and “chimarrão” (a strong tea prepared from
mate herb.

POA 03 | Wine Tour
You will be picked up at your hotel in Porto Alegre and
depart towards the Wine Region, identified with the Italian
Immigrant Culture. Visit to Bento Gonçalves and Garibaldi the greatest national producers of wine and champagne of
Brazil. Both cities have an economy totally revolved around
grape and wine production. Typical regional lunch. Visit to
a vineyard, including wine tasting. Late in the afternoon,
return to Porto Alegre.

POA 04 | Gramado and Canela
Depart up along the Vale dos Sinos, São Leopoldo, first
German settlement in Rio Grande do Sul’s state, and
Novo Hamburgo, considered the Brazilian capital in shoe
manufacturing. You will arrive in Canela and visit the Stone
Cathedral, the Caracol park and the Castelinho - a typical
construction of the beginning of the century. In Gramado
you will have ample time to taste a typical regional lunch
and, in the afternoon, you will visit the artcraft, homemade
chocolate shops, the Negro lake, and many other
attractions. Late in the afternoon, return to Porto Alegre.
POA 05 | Porto Alegre by Night
Tour in the downtown area and Matriz Square, with a
panoramic view of the city at night, in the historical area

POA 06 | Itaimbezinho Canyon
You will be picked up at your hotel in Porto Alegre, going
up past Taquara and along the Campos de Cima da Serra

Aparados da Serra National Park. On your way back, you
will stop in São Francisco de Paula for a Gaúcho lunch. Late
in the afternoon return to Porto Alegre.
