The restaurant has undergone a refurbishment since my last visit, and the inside is very bright and white with lime green walls while the outside is very dark, and was too dark to read the menus. Inside the restaurant, the banging of the door to the kitchen becomes an irrita on especially when there is no background music. Menus are available in both Portuguese and English and the choices are few which should allow the chef to concentrate on producing a few dishes well. My starter of Marinated Feta with Onion Jam (190Mt) was disappoin ng as the feta was smothered in garlic which overpowered the onion jam, and it arrived hot, not cold as expected accompanied by old croutons, and my partner’s garlic langous nes were dry and tasteless. However the main courses made up for the disappoin ng starters, and the specialty of the house is obviously the Carvoada or the Charcoal Grilled Fillet Steak. A small charcoal braai was placed in the middle of the table and we grilled the meat the way we liked it. It would have been be er though to have placed the braai on a lower side table, as the heat from the charcoal was so intense it warmed the wine and raised beads of sweat on our foreheads, while the hot coarse salt on the fillet spat out on our faces from the braai. The price for 1 person is 800MT or for 2 people is 1,400Mt, and there is also a fillet and prawn op on. A plate of sliced banana, melon and pineapple accompanied the meat, though this is not necessary as it did not complement the meat at all. The Langous ne Riso o was perfectly cooked as a riso o should be and was 580Mt. Wines on offer were very limited and extremely expensive with the markup on the bo le of wine I ordered being 300%! The staff are neatly dressed in brown and white uniforms, but I didn’t appreciate the cooks in their white uniforms dragging a large sack of charcoal past my table at 8.30 in the evening and the ice being delivered at 9pm. Pub The manager of the restaurant was seen si ng the whole evening at a table cha ng to friends on both occasions I was there. Even though there were no cruets on the table, I was impressed with the salt and pepper ba ery operated grinders eventually brought by our waiter, with a light so the diner can see how much has been dispensed in the dark! Page03 LM | Just a Thought TEMPORARY OCCUPATIONS 20.11 September sees some of Mozambique’s upcoming young ar sts leave their usual work environments to take their art forms to public spaces. A er last year’s successful first ‘OCUPACOES TEMPORARIAS’, this ‘ar sts in residence’ project will again place six Mozambican ar sts in public spaces around the centre of Maputo from 11 September to 2 October. The project aims to promote Mozambique’s art scene and ar sts na onally and interna onally and connect ci zens and ar sts through u lising public spaces. By holding it around the me of the well respected Jo’burg Art Fair, the organisers hope to take advantage of the proximity to Johannesburg and a ract the a en on of the many vising interna onal arts experts and curators. This year’s theme Precariousness reflects a general feeling that these days we live in “precarious mes, mes of insecurity, transitory and ‘temporary’ mes”. VIOLIN LESSONS The six ar sts you may meet around the city are Camila de Sousa (visual anthropologist/film maker), Bruno Mateus (fashion designer/rapper), Filipe Branquinho (photographer/illustrator), Jorge Dias (visual ar st/curator), Panaibra Gabriel (dancer/choreographer) and Rui Teneiro (ceramics & tex les ar st/illustrator). The Solifuge from Mozambique MOZAMBIQUE HAS ONE OF THE CREEPIEST CREATURES When Steve Backshall and his Deadly team began their expedi on to find 60 of the world’s deadliest animals, li le did they know that it wouldn’t just be the dangerous animals that would send a shiver up their spines. During Deadly 60 Steve has encountered his fair share of freaky creatures around the world, here’s a few of his favourites: Solifuge - Mozambique: Described by Steve as the creepiest creature he’s ever seen, it’s also the fastest invertebrate on the planet with the biggest jaws rela ve to body size of any animal on earth. Legend has it that they chase a er people and eat them alive. Wrinkle lipped bats - Borneo: with its peculiar thick wrinkly lips, heavy jowls and horny big ears it certainly looks odd. Whip spider - Philippines: The spider with a set of bizarre long legs several mes the length of its body which act as sensory organs. They’ll walk about sideways on their six walking legs, with one of the “whips” pointed in the direc on of travel while the other probes for its prey.
