Ingenuity, creativity and boldness are long time trademarks of Rio de Janeiro. We created “frescobol” and “futevôlei” here. We fly, stop time, and create new ideas for fun that win over the world. We promote talent and entrepreneurs and we are the state that currently invests over R$ 1 billion in the field of science. Rio de Janeiro is good at thinking big. RIO DE JANEIRO. Brazil’s trademark. marcaRJ.com.br We are extremely happy about the 7 years of Brazil Film Fest in Toronto. The big news on this anniversary is that the festival will take place at the renowned TIFF Bell Lightbox, one of the most respected entertainment complexes as well as the home of the Toronto International Film Festival, which is an international reference in cinema. With an assortment of 11 films, we will show how the Brazilian cinematography is gradually gaining ground internationally. Two of the 11 films may represent Brazil at the Oscars in 2014. The first one is “The Neighboring Sounds,” running for the category of Best Foreign Language Film and also on the New York Times list of 10 best films of the year. The second one is “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury,” and is among the 19 animation finalists. It was the winner of the most important animation festival in Annecy, France. “Gonzaga” is our choice for the opening night. The film is about an encounter between father and son, two talented Brazilian musicians, to discuss their differences. Gonzaga is a reference of Forró music, widely known and much appreciated around the world. I would like to express my gratitude to this year’s team. Thank you, Chris, Solange, Yuri, Eric, Eduardo, Clarissa, Angie, Liliam, Emilie, Felipe, Loraine, among others, as well as all the volunteers who made this festival a meeting of Brazilian cinema, Canadians, and people from various nationalities. Katia Adler Director of the Festival On behalf of the Consulate General of Brazil in Toronto, it gives me great pleasure to address these words to the organizers, patrons, and to the audience (both Canadian and Brazilian) of the Seventh Edition of the Brazil Film Fest which will be taking place at the world-renowned TIFF Bell Lightbox. Let me preface by saying that the Brazil Film Fest owes its existence to Katia Adler, who also organizes the Brazilian Film Fest in Paris (which is now in its 15th edition). Her talents are well known and her expertise in the world of Brazilian cinema is truly undisputed. On behalf of the Consulate General of Brazil, I would like to thank Katia for her commendable efforts which enable our Canadian audience as well as the Brazilian residents in Toronto to enjoy an array of the most important films coming out of Brazil today. Among the many Canadian organizations which support the Brazil Film Fest I would like to mention Hot Docs, Toronto International Jewish Film Festival, Planet in Focus, and Imagine Native Films – just to name a few. This year you will find many guests, directors, and producers from Brazil who will be present, such as Sérgio Sá Leitão (Secretary of Culture of the City of Rio de Janeiro), Breno Silveira (Director of the films “Gonzaga” and “Along the Way”), and Rapahael Aguinaga (Director of the Co-Production between Brazil/Argentina “The Uprising.” Last, but certainly not least, a great many thanks to the sponsors: the State of Rio de Janeiro; the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro; RioFilme, and BWI (Bassett & Walker International, Inc). Luis Borda Silos Deputy Consul General of Brazil in Toronto It is an honor for RioFilme to support the realization of another edition of Brazil Film Fest in Toronto. This is an important event to promote Brazilian cinema. Its importance for the industry of Brazil is indisputable. The support of RioFilme to Brazil Film Fest is in its third consecutive year. And it will continue until at least 2016. This symbolizes commitment and seriousness of the policy of encouraging the development of industry established in Rio de Janeiro in 2009. Over the past five years, RioFilme has invested US$150 million in 350 projects of Rio’s audiovisual companies, generating 12,000 jobs and contributing US$400 million to the country’s GDP. The cultural, social, and economic results are evident. And there is much more to come. Congratulations to the organizers of the Brazil Film Fest. Again Toronto moviegoers will have access to a wide and varied overview of what is best in recent Brazilian cinema, including five films invested by RioFilme, such as Gonzaga. On behalf of RioFilme, I wish you a great Brazil Film Fest to all! Sérgio Sá Leitão Municipal Secretary of Culture and CEO of RioFilme This year’s Brazil Film Fest can be perfectly summed up in one word to show off the main features of contemporary Brazilian cinema: Diversity. The movies being screened bring a multitude of genres and perspectives able to offer the viewer a clear overview of the Brazilian society of today. From comedy to musical film, animation to documentary, each film expresses a part of the rich panorama of the national cinematography. Regarding the state of Rio de Janeiro, four films stand out. The social comedy “For Sale or Rent,” by Betse Paula, and the documentary “Passinho Dance Off” both seek to portray everyday slums to display a changing society, whether in regard to facing the issues of drug trafficking and violence to the recontextualizing of folk street dancing. The animation “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury,” the filmmaker Luiz Bolognesi, born in São Paulo, tells with rare poetry the social and political history of Rio de Janeiro, from its discovery to a future that refers to science fiction. Last but not least, “Reaching for the Moon,” by Bruno Barreto, shows the romance between poet Elizabeth Bishop and architect Lotta Soares with a backdrop of a Rio de Janeiro whose beauty stretches from the beaches to the agricultural setting of our tropical mountains. For all this, the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, feels obliged to support this important event which is the Brazil Film Fest, through cinema discloses the best of our art, culture, tourism, and politics. In conclusion, have a good screening.
