ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT ILSI Brasil - 2010 President: Executive Director: Aldo Baccarin Mariela Weingarten Berezovsky Number of member companies: 36 Introduction The International Life Sciences Institute is an international, non-profit organization that was founded in 1978. ILSI headquarters is located in Washington, D.C., and has a structure with regional branches in different parts of the world: Argentina, Brazil, North Andean, South Andean, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Northern Africa and the Gulf Region, North America, South Africa, Southeast Asia Region (including Australasia), in addition to a focal point in China. Affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a non-governmental organization and holding specialized consulting status with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, ILSI has advanced in its activities to achieve the mission of helping to provide technical and scientific data that impact public health in addition to improving life quality standards for the different populations. Such a challenge brings scientists from the academia, government, and industry to a neutral forum with the purpose of stimulating and improving scientific knowledge advance in Nutrition, Food Safety, Risk Assessment, Toxicology, and Environment. ILSI plays this social role through research, the organization of workshops and symposiums, and the production of publications translated into many languages, thus disseminating information to thousands of people who may be interested. ILSI’s strengths are based on its renowned scientific structure, its international reach, its programs in different countries, and the recognition by governmental agencies, thus assembling a worldwide network of scientists through collaborative partnerships to promote global cooperation and harmonization in nutrition and science-based food regulation. The foundation of ILSI Brasil in 1990 coincided with the cholera outbreak in the American continent. ILSI’s groundbreaking activity in Brazil was an international seminar that brought together over 500 attendees and resulted in the publication of a book capturing all of the discussions for preventing and controlling the disease. ILSI’s activities follow a similar format in all countries. They are structured based on Scientific Committees and Task Forces. The objective is to stimulate awareness and to fill the gaps in scientific data that impact public health through open dialogue and cooperation. The Committees include representatives from the academia and from industry. In December, 2010, 37 affiliated companies brought together the major players in the food and environmental industry. Together, they maintain close involvement with the government by promoting awareness of science. 1 Organization: ASSEMBLY OF MEMBERS BOARD OF TRUSTEES BOARD OF DIRECTORS STAFF RISK ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE COMUNICATION BIOTECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE AGROCHEMICALS TASK FORCE NUTRITION COMMITTEE SAFETY, BENEFITS & LABELING FOOD SAFETY TASK FORCE FUNCTIONAL FOODS TASK FORCE HEALTHY LIFESTYLES TASK FORCE FOOD FORTIFICATION & SUPPLEMENTS TASK FORCE CLINICAL NUTRITION TASK FORCE ILSI BRASIL PROGRESS, FROM 2001 TO 2010 IN RELATION TO THE NUMBER OF MEMBER COMPANIES AND ACTIVITIES PERFORMED: 60 50 40 30 20 20 01 20 02 20 03 20 04 20 05 20 06 20 07 20 08 20 09 20 10 10 number of member companies number of activities 2 ILSI Brasil Board of Trustees President: Aldo Baccarin Food Intelligence Member companies representatives (50%) Alexandre Novachi Danone Ltda.
